00:00Students across the globe are getting worse at reading, maths and science.
00:04How do EU countries compare?
00:10There has been a general decline in performance in science, reading and mathematics according
00:16to the latest PISA report, which measures 15-year-olds' ability to use their reading, mathematics
00:22and science skills across OECD countries.
00:25Reading recorded the steepest decline, with scores falling by 28 points across OECD members
00:31between 2015 and 2025.
00:34In 2025, seven EU countries had a mean performance significantly above the OECD average, while
00:4013 member states had a mean performance considerably below.
00:45Mathematics followed with a drop of 22 points over the past decade.
00:49Last year, 11 EU countries had a noticeable mean performance above the OECD average compared
00:57to nine member states, with a mean performance significantly below.
01:01Science, however, has been comparatively resilient over the past decade, registering the smallest
01:07fall.
01:08The report also states the world is no longer divided into rich countries with great schools
01:13and poor countries with weak ones.
01:16For instance, Luxembourg is by far the biggest spender on education, but it posted lower average
01:21science scores than Ireland, France and Italy.
01:25All of which invested less than half that amount per student.
