00:00Women scientists and engineers surge across the EU.
00:07More than 73.8 million people aged from 25 to 64 were employed in science and technology
00:14in the EU in 2024. A rising number of them were women. The amount of female scientists
00:20and engineers in the EU increased from 3.4 million in 2008 to 7.9 million in 2024.
00:28Among EU countries, the highest shares of female scientists and engineers were registered
00:32in Latvia at 50.9%, Denmark at 48.8% and Estonia at 47.9%. By contrast, the lowest representation
00:43was recorded in Finland at 30.7%, Hungary at 31.7% and Luxembourg at 32.4%.
00:53Across all economic activities, women represented 40.5% of the scientists and engineers workforce
00:59in the EU in 2024. Despite these, women are still widely underrepresented in science and
01:05engineering, making up only 25% of self-employed professionals in these fields and ICT.
01:11In addition, women born outside the EU are less likely to be employed as scientists and engineers
01:16compared to women born in another EU country and those born in the EU country where they work.
01:22The lowest proportions of women outside the EU working as scientists and engineers are
01:27in Luxembourg and in the Netherlands.
