00:28You
01:02I want to talk to you here today about some materials that were offered the public quite
01:12a long time ago on the subject of gradation.
01:16I want to talk to you about the root, the bridge.
01:23When you first say to somebody, we're going to make you better, or we want to make you
01:33better, he immediately asked the question, better what?
01:42Bank robber, of course, say he wanted to become a better bank robber.
01:53Now, somebody who has lumbosis, a weird disease that is only known in Scientology.
02:07Well, he thinks you're talking about making his lumbosis better.
02:11The difficulty, then, is one of communication.
02:15And communicating what we are trying to do in Scientology to somebody who has no inkling
02:21that that can happen is difficult.
02:26And one of the most difficult things in the world is to tell somebody who thinks he's
02:30a body that he is himself.
02:35Now the world at large tends to tell one another, but I don't think individually any of them believe
02:42it, but they tell one another that man is an animal and that man is only an animal and
02:50that when he dies, he is gone.
02:55Of course, that's just about as insulting as you can possibly get.
03:00That gives a guy no duration.
03:03An individual then is dead, is killed dead.
03:06So if you wanted to get even with your fellow man, you just go around and tell him, you're
03:10an animal and when you're dead, you're dead.
03:15Now I've gotten even with you.
03:19Man has believed in life everlasting much longer than he has believed in being an animal.
03:26He's only believed that he was an animal, really, since he saw the first psychologist.
03:37I probably didn't state that very flattering with regard to psychology.
03:43People sometimes think I joke about these things, but the truth of the matter is, did you know
03:50that I got a hold of a book?
03:53The book, Dianetics, Modern Science of Mental Health, was published in May of 1950, and just
04:03before the first issue of Dianetics, Modern Science of Mental Health came off the publisher's
04:09assembly line, the last psychology textbook dropped off the assembly line in the same book
04:16company.
04:16The American book company was also publishing for the University of Chicago psychology text
04:23department.
04:24So there was a psychology textbook which was written and printed before Dianetics, Modern
04:32Science of Mental Health was printed.
04:33But there they were, end, end.
04:36And as that last book dropped off the line, I caught it.
04:39And I turned around to the very nice young vice president of the publishing company and
04:44so forth, and I said, do you mind if I keep this?
04:47She said, well, it isn't really properly bound, and its cover will probably bend, but you may
04:52keep it.
04:54So I did, and I put it in my library, and I still have it to this day.
05:00It's odd that it no longer is representative of what they call psychology.
05:08That's very interesting.
05:09It teaches that man cannot change.
05:12It doesn't only teach that he's an animal, it says he cannot change.
05:15He said that nobody can change his intelligence, nobody can change his ability, nobody can change
05:19his behavior.
05:20Man can't change.
05:21He's finished.
05:23So you can say something worse than to somebody that you're totally mortal.
05:26No.
05:27You can say, you're in a mess, huh?
05:29Well, you're all going to be there.
05:32I hope I'll cheer you up.
05:42So, the world, having been taught this type of thing for quite a while now, then finds
05:48it rather hard to grasp the older and truer statement, which that man, an individual man, has
05:57been going for a very long time, and when he dies, he goes somewhere else.
06:03A man's believed that longer, but this other philosophy came in and tended to wipe it away.
06:09So, therefore, it becomes rather difficult to tell somebody who is out in the street there,
06:15and you say, Scientology, and this is where and what we do.
06:20Well, he isn't aware of the fact he's got any place to go, don't you see?
06:24He doesn't think he can get any better.
06:27He doesn't think anything's going to change, and so forth.
06:31Well, you have to show him.
06:32Well, because it is hard to demonstrate it to him or teach him intellectually, you can,
06:39however, do it with a synthetic graph.
06:42You can show that there are these various states.
06:45Now, by visualizing this graph, by visualizing on the graph and letting him see that there is
06:53this and that and the next thing, why then he is shown that there is some place for him to
06:59go.
07:00And that is the reason for this.
07:02Now, oddly enough, it is very doubtful if he will have any great reality higher than the next level up.
07:13He has a good reality on this one jump.
07:19He can visualize that.
07:20He can imagine that.
07:21When he gets to that, he can have another realization of the next one.
07:27It's very funny to see somebody who has just been, oh, man, he's just been tearing up the ground to
07:32become first stage release.
07:35And he's gotten to be a first stage release.
07:37So he says, all right, I'm first stage release.
07:39Now, second stage, you see?
07:42How do I get there?
07:43How do I get there?
07:45If you told him that he had to make this tremendous jump in 24 hours from where he stood to
07:53OT, you would give him a terrible lose.
07:55And very often somebody tries to tell people this.
07:59And it gives them a very bad lose.
08:01Shouldn't do that.
08:04Life is improved on a gradient.
08:08It's improved a little, and then it's improved a little more, and it's improved a little more, and a little
08:12more.
08:12But if you expect somebody to come along with a great big horse syringe and chunk it into you and
08:21go, and there you are, an OT, operating Thetan.
08:27Highest state there is.
08:29All in a second, why, then you've also bought the idea that you don't have anything to do with life.
08:35Because it is you and your awareness which is improving.
08:40It isn't the attendant and appendant machinery you're surrounded with, like your hands and your arms and your automobiles that's
08:49improving.
08:49It is you.
08:51Now, in Scientology, we're in the business of handling life.
08:55And we are just about the first ones that have attempted this for a very, very long time.
08:58And we're very good at it.
09:00We have been at it now for quite a while.
09:03You take some Scientologist and major him up to an existing situation.
09:07Why, he may not make the most roaring success out of the situation in the first three minutes.
09:12But he will certainly do a better job of it than anybody else can.
09:17Now, if you had a very serious illness, one's mind would be so thoroughly occupied with being sick that one
09:37could only envision being well.
09:41So if you were talking to a very sick man, you might talk to him and say there's a state
09:47of OT whereby you get 100 miles tall and that's it.
09:52I don't think he'd give you much attention.
09:54He'd be talking to those pains in his stomach.
09:58So to a very sick man, about all that could be envisioned by him would be not getting well.
10:08That'd be too big a jump.
10:10But not hurting, you get the gradient.
10:16If you could just fix him up, you could tell him, you could tell him, we'll fix you up so
10:19you don't hurt.
10:22He'd say, oh, thank heaven for that.
10:27You see, that would be a big win.
10:31Well, when you had him so he didn't hurt, why, he'd be saying, well, I wonder if I could sit
10:42up.
10:44Next game, see, next day.
10:47And then if he's sitting up, why, he says, you know, maybe I'll get downstairs tomorrow.
10:53If at any one of those, if you told him at that stage of the game, well, well, Joe, we're
10:58going to have you, we're going to have you back on the job in your old state, you know, and
11:03playing on the local company football team by next week.
11:07And the whole message here is when you tell a person about too big a jump, that you expect him
11:24to make too big an advance, in too little time, you will give him a lose.
11:31In other words, he doesn't then gain, he loses.
11:34And the gradation chart, which we have, is a prevention against this.
11:39It not only tells a person where he can go, but it tells him also in such a way and
11:46shows him the right stages to prevent his having a tremendous loss.
11:52Otherwise, he could lose.
11:55Oh, Scientology.
11:56You can imagine some state of mind like this.
11:58Oh, Scientology.
11:59Oh, yes.
12:01Scientology.
12:01All right.
12:03That's, that's fine.
12:04Well, they'll make you an operating thetan there and you'll be nine feet tall and you'll be able to beat
12:09up on the local government.
12:12And you'll be able to throw your wife in the Pacific Ocean.
12:15You won't have to bother with her anymore.
12:16And you'll just be all powerful and so forth.
12:20Well, it probably wouldn't be very real to the individual.
12:23Even if he believed it, I can assure you, it's going to take him several years to make it.
12:28And by the time he makes it, he won't have any interest in throwing his wife in the local ocean
12:33or beating up the local council.
12:36Government, excuse me.
12:39Now, the individuals who are on this planet were not issued an instruction book about themselves.
12:51I wish to register a protest about this.
12:59They've got all sorts of technical writers, so it was no dearth of technical writers.
13:06And we have had to do it all from scratch.
13:08But this is an instruction book on self, not an instruction book on the body or how you should be
13:14a good boy or a good girl in the society.
13:17An instruction book on self.
13:19And how do you learn about yourself?
13:24What you're going to do, where you can go, what your capabilities are.
13:27Well, you'd learn that by studying one lesson at a time and by achieving one improvement at a time.
13:34And if you did that in an orderly fashion, you not only would get very few loses, but you would
13:39be able to advance up to a very high state.
13:45Also, there's another point which is interesting, and that is if you can, in actual fact, advance a person by
13:52processing more rapidly than he can tolerate.
13:55There's this other side of it.
13:58Well, I can do that.
13:59But in every case, the individual has just gone, has practically collapsed.
14:07Too much gain, see?
14:09Oh, he walks out of the place.
14:12He's nine feet tall.
14:13He's going to take on the world.
14:15You know?
14:17He's all set.
14:22Then he runs into a grasshopper, and the grasshopper kicks him in the teeth, and he falls flat on his
14:27back.
14:30He gets home.
14:31Imagine a guy being in such a state that he gets home and he said, boy, I feel wonderful.
14:36And all it takes is one little remark from his wife, well, you don't look wonderful, dear, to put him
14:40in bed.
14:42I wouldn't say he was in very good shape, do you?
14:46But you can advance an individual well up above his ability to tolerate it.
14:54So that is another reason why it is done by gradation.
14:59Now, what does gradation mean?
15:00Well, there are grades to a road, and there are grades to steps.
15:04There are steep steps and shallow steps and so forth, and there are vertical poles.
15:10And a vertical pole is not a gradient.
15:15You want a gradual grade up.
15:21That's what gradation means in our particular sense.
15:24And classification means that we require certain actions to have been done or conditions to have been attained before we
15:34say that individual is classified in that grade and let him go on up.
15:40Now, we're not trying to keep anybody back.
15:42We're just trying to keep somebody from breaking his neck.
15:45We have the idea of a bridge across the chasm.
15:54Now, that is an old mystic idea that there was a chasm.
15:58There was a chasm between this existence, where we are now, and a higher plateau of existence, and that many
16:06people trying to make it fell into the abyss.
16:13Well, we've built a bridge, and we have this simile of the bridge, and the bridge goes from this state
16:21of existence to that state of existence.
16:23And the bridge is all complete now, and it can be walked.
16:28But there's one point.
16:29You have to walk on the bridge.
16:31You know, you wouldn't think you'd have to tell people this.
16:37You'd say to somebody, you can cross the Grand Canyon as long as you walk across the bridge.
16:43And you think that is enough, but by George, somebody would go down to the edge and walk off into
16:48thin air.
16:50And you would say .
17:02So the gradation classification plan is a prevention of that kind of thing.
17:09It says there is a bridge.
17:12And if you're going to go across from where you are now to where you're going to arrive, well, you
17:18go across on the bridge.
17:22And you might say ethics, as you will connect with an organization sooner or later and become aware of and
17:29so forth, is the traffic cop.
17:32The traffic cop says, that's the bridge.
17:35That's the abyss.
17:39That's about all it amounts to.
17:42This plan has been worked out for quite a long period of time.
17:47It's been very successful.
17:49And these states are attainable, and they walk forward.
17:59Now, we have here just the chart itself, which has been published.
18:04And it goes from the bottom up.
18:09It is read from the bottom up.
18:12And it even has an elastic bottom.
18:17Some people are more bottom than others.
18:27Some people start from zero.
18:31Some people start from zero, you see.
18:35Now, you go up along the line here, you'll find out we've got a zero.
18:41Well, now, if some people start from zero, where do others start from?
18:45Well, some people aren't up to zero yet.
18:49And that's for sure.
18:50Now, we see along the bottom here, the first negative 34 states.
18:58And the first of those states that is listed here is unexistence.
19:03Unexistence.
19:04But there are states way below unexistence.
19:07It's just that people in those states aren't likely to ever be able to read this chart, so we never
19:11bothered to put them on.
19:15Now, you'll find that as an individual goes up here, a very funny thing about this chart.
19:21A person, for instance, a person, for instance, one of these lines, let us say unexistence, when he improves, becomes
19:33aware of disconnection.
19:38Now, disconnection would be an improvement over no existence at all.
19:44He gets the idea that he's disconnected from things.
19:48He becomes alert to the fact, he becomes aware of the fact that in life he's actually disconnected.
19:54You see, from not existing at all, he becomes aware of the fact that he is at least disconnected from
20:00things.
20:01You get the idea?
20:02So as we go up, a person at any one of these levels, no matter where they are on the
20:07chart, is most likely to become aware of the next exact level up.
20:13And this is levels and a map of what the individual can become aware of.
20:18So if you ask somebody who is down here in a state of fixidity, fixed, there he is, stuck, he
20:30knows that.
20:31If we ask this individual to suddenly envision the idea of power...
20:40Why?
20:41Me?
20:43Oh, no.
20:44Somebody's wrong.
20:45See?
20:45But you could tell this individual that, oddly enough, it may not sound right in this particular, but when a
20:55person is in total fixidity, the first thing he's aware of is glee.
21:02On a harmonic on that, he's most aware of ridicule.
21:07Well, you can get the individual, he's stuck in the mud, totally stuck in the mud, and somebody comes along
21:13and laughs at him.
21:14Well, he hasn't paid any attention to anybody so far until somebody laughed at him.
21:18Now he's aware of it.
21:23This is a little guide here that's quite interesting if you used it in life, if you located what the
21:28individual is aware of.
21:29But don't make this mistake.
21:31It's not, this isn't what the individual is dramatizing.
21:35This isn't the individual's behavior.
21:39This is what he himself, as a being, is aware of.
21:43That's what he's aware of.
21:47So, he's aware of the fact he's introverted.
21:49Now, you can be aware of the fact he's introverted, but that doesn't make him aware of it, even when
21:55you tell him out of the best of intentions.
22:02You see, you can be aware of the fact he's introverted.
22:05Well, that doesn't put him at introversion.
22:07It's, is he aware of it?
22:09That's what puts him at introversion.
22:11You'll find a lot of human beings have to come up a long way to become aware of the fact
22:15they're introverted.
22:16That's actually a pretty high condition for homo sapiens.
22:20And after he's aware of, if he's become aware of the fact that he's introverted, he can then, and only
22:27then, become aware of the fact that he's numb.
22:33He's numb.
22:34He doesn't get any reaction from life.
22:36So, as he goes up the scale here, he becomes aware in each particular time and turn with each stage
22:46above that.
22:47Now, oddly enough, a very high state is the state of need of change.
22:54An individual who knows that he needs change in his life is few and far between.
23:00Most homo sapiens wonder how they can endure the thing they can't change.
23:10Now, the one thing that Scientology can do, and the one thing it does do, is change conditions.
23:20And if there's anything that Scientology can do, at all, it will be change of conditions.
23:29Now, used properly, it always improves the conditions.
23:32If you goof it up, it can worsen conditions.
23:36Do you see? That's why we insist it's used right.
23:42So, the need of change at minus four gives you the point where the individual can become a Scientologist.
23:56He's aware of the need of change.
24:00Individuals who are below that point have to be coddled and nursed and herded and handled with the greatest care.
24:07But when they get up to the point where they recognize the world is in need of change, they are
24:11a Scientologist or capable of being one.
24:15Got it?
24:17Now, they go up for minus four here, the need of change.
24:20Now, the next thing they do after they become aware of the need of change is demand improvement.
24:26And after a demand of improvement, they can see that there's some hope.
24:33They can become aware of the fact that there is some hope.
24:36And when they're aware of hope, they can become aware of the fact that there's help and that they can
24:41help.
24:43Now, this individual then is aware of help.
24:48He isn't necessarily pleading for it. He's aware of it.
24:51And that's a six-way proposition.
24:54You can help others, and others can help others, and others can help you.
24:58And, you know, it's a mutual ground sort of a situation.
25:03And you have an individual who is unwilling to audit others or unwilling to help others to the degree that
25:11he has helped and so forth.
25:13He isn't really up to that on the tone scale.
25:16You've got to audit me.
25:19All right?
25:20I'll gladly audit you.
25:21You audit me.
25:22Oh, no, I haven't got the time.
25:25You got the idea?
25:27Now, above that, the individual begins to have recognition.
25:31He begins to see where he is.
25:32His orientation becomes better.
25:34He begins to recognize.
25:36And the first thing he gets an inkling of is himself.
25:39He begins to recognize himself.
25:41And he begins to recognize others for what they are and the potentials of others.
25:46Now, he gets up to there, and he gets up to a point where he can communicate.
25:50Pretty high level.
25:52And above that, he gets up to a point of being able to perceive.
25:57And above perception, of course, in order to be oriented, you have to be able to perceive.
26:08You can't find out where you are unless you can perceive where you are.
26:12Obvious.
26:13And so you get oriented.
26:15And after orientation comes understanding.
26:18And after understanding becomes enlightenment.
26:21Believe me, enlightenment never takes place before understanding.
26:25Lots of people think it can.
26:28And modern universities are totally dedicated to this.
26:33Now, above that, an individual again gets a return of his energy.
26:38He gets an adjustment.
26:39He becomes aware of the fact of a body and that he is not a body.
26:43He gets into a point where he can predict.
26:45He goes into action.
26:46He himself is capable of production.
26:48He knows a result when he sees one.
26:51He can review the things of his life and take care of it.
26:54He regains his ability.
26:55His purposes, his own purposes, start coming out straight.
26:58For the first time, he didn't ever realize he was really running on other people's purposes.
27:02And he gets a clearing of his entire past and other purposes and a realization of himself.
27:09And then he goes into a state where he is capable of power.
27:13But by the time he gets into that state, he is, of course, totally responsible and could be trusted with
27:18it.
27:18Otherwise, he won't make it.
27:19Now, when we look all this over, we find ourselves one column on this chart.
27:25We have paralleled it by various techniques and activities which approximate these and bring about these conditions as they go
27:34up.
27:34And an individual moving up this chart one after the other does make these various steps and arrive finally at
27:43the top.
27:45There are various states called the state of release.
27:49There are four stages of release up to here.
27:53Four stages of release up to level five.
27:58Different states of condition.
28:00And then there is a state of another state of release is actually in this point, which is achieved.
28:10But that state we call clear.
28:13Now, clear is followed by the state of operating fate.
28:18In other words, an individual could operate totally independently of his body, whether he had one or didn't have one.
28:23He's now himself. He's not dependent on the universe around him.
28:26Now, that is what that chart describes.
28:29And that is a guide from the individual for the individual from the point where he first becomes dimly aware
28:37of a Scientologist or Scientology.
28:41And how he can move shows him how he can move and through what he should move on up through
28:46in order to make it.
28:47A lot of people are making it now that this chart has come into existence.
28:54And we have we're having no real difficulty getting people to obtain these various conditions.
29:00You could probably audit somebody exclusively or practice on them exclusively on the basis of just the little changes I've
29:09just described to you in detail.
29:11You know, you could find that he was in this state and then copes him to become aware of the
29:17very next state mentioned, as I have just described to you, and an individual would come on up the line.
29:22It would be a full route in itself.
29:25The only thing wrong with that is he himself is rather bogged down with all kinds of machinery and odds
29:31and ends.
29:31And this makes it very, very hard for him to get close to himself.
