00:00So let's get over to the other story this week.
00:02Kathy Engelbert has announced that she's going to retire at the end of her contract.
00:07And so give me the good, the bad, and the ugly with her time as commissioner of the WNBA.
00:14Well, before I give you the good, bad, and the ugly, how about if J.Y. was right?
00:19Because I called this thing about two damn months ago saying that she had to go.
00:25Let's go to the good.
00:27The viewership, the value of the franchises, and the expansion fees are through the roof.
00:33Could that be Kathy Engelbert? Yes.
00:36But it's got a lot more to do with the product on the court, especially the popularity of players like
00:42Paige Beckers,
00:43and obviously Kaitlyn Clark being at the forefront.
00:46The bad, and the ugly is her inability to communicate with her players.
00:50The inability to get out in public and relay the thoughts of what is going on.
00:58The WNBA big sales is in a really critical state.
01:01And I've talked about this.
01:03They got to get a commissioner.
01:05And I'm going to say this.
01:06I don't give a damn if it's a woman or a man.
01:10Get it right.
01:11Get someone that can continue to build the business model of the WNBA, which will make the NBA and Adam
01:19Silver happy.
01:20But get someone in there that can speak to people, that can talk to people, that can get in front
01:25of a press conference and say,
01:27we believe him, we believe her, they know what they're doing.
01:31You got people.
01:32Listen, there's talks coming out.
01:34Condoleezza Rice's name been thrown out.
01:36I've even saw Michelle Obama been talking about.
01:39But the name that I saw made a lot of sense is Swin Cash, former star at UConn, former star
01:47player in the WNBA,
01:48been part of the Players Association in the past.
01:51Someone that's piped in to the old and new players,
01:55and someone who is eloquent and good enough to talk in public but still deal with the back office deals
02:01because she's done back office deals herself with her league and has done a great job.
02:07You know that Condoleezza Rice name, she was a finalist for the NFL commissioner's job.
02:13You know, it was Roger Goodell, it was Condoleezza Rice, and it was Rich McKay.
02:17Those were the three names that came down to, and they obviously chose Roger Goodell.
02:22So I know Condoleezza very well, and she is a huge sports fan, and she's a teacher right now at
02:28Stanford.
