00:10ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:43Lewis Hamilton, an eight-time winner and nine-time pole sitter here,
00:48went quickest in Friday practice.
00:50FP1, though, was topped by his team-mate,
00:53so Ferrari are the ones to beat here at the Hungara ring.
00:57The margins are as tight as the track itself, though.
01:00To put it on pole, you've got to get everything right
01:03because this is a circuit that demands precision.
01:06So just one more hour of practice to build that rhythm ahead of qualifying.
01:12A very warm welcome, then, from Jamie Chadwick and I
01:15to the paddock here in Hungary, and it's a glorious day.
01:18We thought it was a little bit cool coming into the weekend,
01:20but it's ramped up, and at the moment at least feels like the wind's dropped a little bit.
01:26It definitely feels better than yesterday.
01:28Yesterday the wind was higher.
01:29Well, the temperature itself was a bit lower as well.
01:32So conditions today feel better, a little bit more what we know of Hungary of previous.
01:36I think the track 10 being even higher is maybe a worse thing for the drivers.
01:40We saw a lot of them suffering with overheating, especially in the last sector.
01:44So that's always been a factor here, and as the sun comes out,
01:47as we've seen, that never helps situation.
01:49But the wind being lower, I think, will help quite a bit.
01:51Yesterday it was gusty. It was on and off.
01:53It was difficult for the drivers and the teams to kind of work out
01:55what was the wind, what was everything else.
01:57There were so many different factors making it hard work for the drivers,
01:59but I guess that's what we want to see,
02:01and that's what's going to make it difficult for the drivers to put it on pole today.
02:04Absolutely. Well, it's a great circuit,
02:06one that seems to be very popular with the drivers.
02:09You've won here. What does it take?
02:11I mean, I think it's a popular circuit with the drivers that go well here.
02:14Not everyone loves it, but if you do enjoy it,
02:16and you do love it and you go well here, then it's a great circuit.
02:19It's kind of got a little bit of everything in it.
02:21It's kind of a go-kart track grown in a way.
02:24There's a lot of sort of fast-flowing sections,
02:26a lot of medium-speed corners where it's kind of combined entries,
02:29and if you've got the car working, it's great.
02:30If you don't, it's a real handful,
02:32and I think that's one of the nice things about it
02:34is getting everything together for that one lap,
02:36and in qualifying, it's going to be very difficult.
02:38I think this year we've seen quite a big difference,
02:40obviously, with how the cars behave around here
02:42with the different characteristics of this year's regulations
02:45versus last year's regulations,
02:47and as a result, it's hard work for everyone.
02:49So, yeah, I think some teams seem to be more on top of it than others.
02:53Ferrari, of course, looking very strong yesterday,
02:55whereas others maybe a little bit more on the back foot.
02:57Well, Lewis Hamilton certainly loves it around here.
02:59He's won eight times, nine times on pole.
03:02What chance of him making it a tenth later today?
03:05He topped the timesheets yesterday.
03:07Interestingly, he said he needed to step things up after Belgium,
03:11thinking that he could and should have potentially won there
03:14and, indeed, at Silverstone,
03:16two circuits that don't necessarily lend themselves
03:18to the characteristics of his Ferrari.
03:21What about here?
03:22Absolutely.
03:23I mean, well, firstly, we're talking about Lewis, in a way,
03:25being a threat to Mercedes.
03:27If you look at Mercedes' reliability issues,
03:29yes, they've so far had the outright pace
03:31to be dominating this championship,
03:32but Ferrari are very much there
03:34and picking up the pieces when things go wrong,
03:35and we know how good the Ferrari chassis is.
03:37So then you come to a track like this,
03:39which is chassis dominant,
03:40it's less power sensitive than a circuit like Spa,
03:43and really, on paper,
03:45everything should fall into their laps, in a way,
03:48and I think for Lewis and Charles, in a way,
03:50it's a track they both go well at.
03:51So you've kind of got that added confidence.
03:53He knows he's got it within him this year.
03:55He's been qualifying a lot better than he did last year.
03:57The car suits him.
03:59The team are working a lot better than they did last year,
04:01and it gives sort of all the signs pointing in the direction.
04:04I can't believe the stat that it was 2023,
04:06his last pole position,
04:07and it gives all the kind of right signs
04:09that he can maybe get ahead of that
04:12and get pole position today.
04:13And actually, momentum, it feels at least,
04:15to be the moment with his teammate
04:17having a great result winning at Silverstone
04:19and then again on the podium last weekend.
04:22He has put it on pole.
04:23It hasn't won here.
04:25What about his chances?
04:26Yeah, I mean, last year was a messy race
04:28for them as a team.
04:29They were sort of battling all sorts of issues
04:30with trying to manage the ride height
04:33to not have an illegal plank at the end of the race.
04:35So I think they know what not to do here.
04:37It's very different this year.
04:38And I think between them, it's interesting
04:40because this year as a whole,
04:41we've seen the sort of differences
04:43between the two teammates.
04:44And as general, well, generally speaking,
04:48whoever's struggling has been a bit lost with,
04:50is it driving style?
04:51Is it, you know, something with the way
04:52the cars are with the deployment?
04:54What is the reason to,
04:55it's a difficulty to get on top of these cars?
04:58And as we think that,
04:59Charles then goes and has a great last two races.
05:02So I think they're getting on top of it now.
05:04We're getting to the midpoint of the season.
05:05They're all starting to understand
05:06these cars a lot better,
05:08get the most out of them.
05:09And then a track like this
05:10that is a favorite for Charles and Lewis,
05:13they seem to be right out front.
05:14Okay, let's hear from some other drivers now,
05:15then starting with Charles.
05:18Yeah, it was a relatively strong day.
05:20From the beginning,
05:21I felt quite good with the car
05:22and performance seemed to be good
05:25from the straight, straight away.
05:27So that's a good thing.
05:28But the weekend is still long.
05:30From the Friday to the Saturday,
05:32we see teams making a jump of performance.
05:36Normally, we are on the back foot on the Friday,
05:38so it's a good thing that we have a good Friday.
05:41but we still need to stay on it
05:42and work hard in order to get better for tomorrow.
05:45I think the Ferraris have looked very quick
05:47in both sessions,
05:48but I think Lando looked competitive
05:50in that one especially.
05:52And yeah, I think the Mercedes is very hard to read.
05:56So yeah, let's wait and see tomorrow.
05:58But I think if we execute a good day,
06:00then it seems like they can be a lot up for grabs.
06:03Very tricky FP2.
06:04I thought FP1 was tough enough.
06:06It got worse in FP2.
06:08BF wins.
06:11So yeah, how to get a proper read
06:12with the changes we made.
06:15It seems like, I mean, the car is working okay.
06:17It's just that the Ferrari are way stronger.
06:20So we've got, yeah,
06:23quite a bit of lap time tonight.
06:25Long run seemed pretty good,
06:27but that one lap pace we're lacking.
06:29Yeah, this weekend is a totally different beast.
06:30You know, it's,
06:32these power units are pretty impressive
06:33on this short track,
06:35having sort of 350 kilowatts
06:36out of all of the corners
06:38and the rear tires are getting blasted around the lap.
06:42So as I said,
06:43we've got work to do as a team.
06:44Ferrari are a good step ahead of everyone right now.
06:49How do you think George will be feeling
06:50coming into this weekend?
06:51Obviously a really tough time
06:53having that first lap crash in Belgium.
06:55Having had a decent race at Silverstone,
06:58this is a circuit that isn't energy starved.
07:00So deployment isn't going to be an issue.
07:02That's been a headache
07:02that he's had for some time.
07:04It's a completely different proposition for him though.
07:06It is.
07:07It's been a sort of rollercoaster of a season for George.
07:09And even in a way for Kimi,
07:11I think reliability,
07:13a lot of these different factors
07:14haven't made it plain sailing for either driver.
07:16But for George especially,
07:17I think, you know,
07:19we've kind of been through that journey with him
07:20of is it his driving style?
07:22Is it this?
07:22Is it that?
07:22He's not used to being in the position
07:24where a teammate has been
07:26as strong as Kimi has against him.
07:27And so it's been tough.
07:29They feel like they found the bottom
07:30or got to the bottom of the software issue
07:32that was causing the biggest issue
07:34which we saw in Spa.
07:35And it might have been affecting as well Silverstone
07:36and then as well Red Bull rings.
07:38So in that sense,
07:40I think he can put his mind at rest
07:41and he can know that, you know,
07:42his team, and he mentioned it as well,
07:44his team is doing everything that they can
07:45to give him the best car possible.
07:47But the challenge is,
07:48is for whatever reason,
07:50although the car has been dominant this year,
07:53coming to a track like this,
07:54it doesn't seem to be as strong.
07:55And I think Ferrari do look
07:57to be a step ahead of the rest.
07:58That said, I think yesterday was a very different day
07:59to what we're going to see today.
08:01And a lot of the issues that they had yesterday,
08:03I'm sure they're on top of
08:04and it'll be a lot closer today.
08:06Well, there were issues for everyone
08:07because they were grappling
08:08with all sorts of conditions.
08:09As we've touched on,
08:10the wind was a particular factor
08:11and indeed the track itself.
08:14This is Colopinto coming into the last corner.
08:17Yeah, so he, in the transition phase
08:19between turning out of the penultimate corner
08:21into the final corner,
08:23wasn't the first one to lose the rear there.
08:24He lost it very early,
08:25which meant he had no chance
08:26to try and get or recover the car.
08:29He's a bit of a passenger into the barriers.
08:31But a lot of the drivers
08:32talking about this last corner,
08:33especially turn one, big bump as well.
08:36It just looks incredibly low grip.
08:38So the Budapest we know and love
08:41is a high grip circuit
08:42and one of the drivers
08:43can have a lot of confidence
08:44to throw a lot of speed into the corners.
08:46The Budapest we saw yesterday
08:47wasn't so much like that.
08:48So it's this trade-off
08:49and this balance of
08:50you don't want to make a mistake,
08:51you want to gather the data,
08:52you don't want to have
08:53the situation the Franco had,
08:54but you've got qualifying later
08:56and you've got to find the limits.
08:57So it's going to be a challenge for everyone.
08:59Talking of that big bump at turn one,
09:01they've been doing a bit of work on it overnight.
09:03So we're expecting,
09:04hoping at least,
09:05that it will be a bit easier today.
09:06What do you think?
09:07I mean, we hope.
09:09I've seen tracks
09:10where they've done that before.
09:11It's very difficult
09:12to decipher exactly where the bump is,
09:14the profile of the bump,
09:15to then flatten the bump accordingly.
09:17I mean, these cars are so sensitive.
09:19If you were to look at the bump,
09:21visually,
09:21you probably wouldn't even see it as such.
09:23And then suddenly an F1 car
09:24goes over it this far off the ground
09:26and it's incredibly challenging.
09:28So let's see.
09:29They'll find out today.
09:30There's obviously,
09:31you know,
09:31been support races
09:32that were out earlier in the day
09:33and seem to have less issues at turn one.
09:36Issues elsewhere on the track
09:37where the track looked actually very dirty.
09:38So yeah,
09:39still a challenge this track.
09:41Okay, well,
09:41five rookies stepped in in FP1,
09:44which meant five regular racers
09:46had to sit the session out,
09:48including Kimi Antonelli.
09:50They're all keen to get back out there
09:51for this final hour of practice.
09:54So let's head up then
09:55to our commentators,
09:56Anthony Davidson and David Croft.
10:17We'll be right back.
10:18Let's get to the end.
10:21We'll be right back.
10:25¡Sus grazie a lot!
10:36We'll be right back.

16:09which is also good what I don't have any confirmation on is whether they've
16:14actually beefed up that rear suspension I would assume like we discussed
16:17yesterday they have because when something breaks what you tend to do if
16:21you're a Formula One team is just beef it up and and hope it doesn't break the
16:25next or put a fix in I should say to make sure it doesn't break the next day
16:29but I'm having that I'm yet to have that confirmed but I will do from the team
16:33but yes they they found a mechanical issue with a pre-existing component we
16:38already knew that from yesterday and it damaged the new rear suspension but
16:44it's we believe that they fixed that part for today thank you very much indeed
16:48Ted racing balls we saw one of the cars on the at the stand there they broke the
16:53curfew last night as did Ferrari so I wonder what's happening there you will
16:58have noticed it as we were looking into the Aston Martin garage on the inside of
17:03the at the rear wing the team have the message this weekend thinking of you
17:07Biscuit and we all are not just Aston Martin but the entire F1 paddock
17:12Biscuit is a is a man that works in Formula One he and Jim the the tire guys
17:18down at Aston an absolute legend there you are for the the pit board as well an
17:24absolute legend in Formula One and having his own battle off the track at the
17:28moment Biscuit I'm sure you're watching the action here we love you mate and we
17:34can't wait for you to come back to the track there is a a builder's tea a milky
17:38builder's tea with three sugars waiting for you whenever you come back to the
17:42track we miss you hugely and we're all thinking of you this weekend
17:45yeah really well said Croft you have worked with Biscuit in the past myself and as a
17:49young test driver back in the day and he's he's one of the good guys as a test
17:54driver do you know what there's there's no better guy to have on your side of the
17:58garage as a youngster coming to F1 he's been there done it not just bought the t-shirt
18:03stored it away as well it's got all the tales to tell and time spent in his
18:07company is is never time wasted at all so hopefully speaking of Aston Martin they
18:13can have a better Budapest a better race this year well all signs if the car is
18:19reliable all signs point to them being more competitive yeah I think I think it's
18:27it's attracted the attention of Williams and they're like you know what they
18:30they might be in our ballpark race wise they might be a bit ahead of Cadillac as
18:34well but that's just based on the Friday we that needs to carry over into today
18:39and also with Aston Martin whatever upgrades they've put onto the chassis in
18:44the aero side there's 16 different areas where there's an upgrade they're still
18:49waiting for the Honda upgrade to come in Zandvoort next time out which could be
18:53worth a lot more horsepower and I think a few vibrations came back yesterday as well
18:57so temper the enthusiasm a little bit because it's not the full package with
19:03the engine upgrade to when that comes fingers crossed that they'll start to
19:08show the promise that I think the team can deliver his Franco common pin so
19:12calls to red flag yesterday yeah recovering from that that moment in the
19:16final corner which so many drivers struggled with but and we were expecting
19:20some kind of incident I mean this was we had the was it the f3 yeah session
19:26before f1 and and the poor super so it's not I don't know what's going on with
19:32that dust air we need a better view of turn three but I'm surprised that it's
19:37still lingering on but I call a Pinto back at work and he has a lot of catching up
19:45to do after that crash yesterday it always knocks the confidence a little bit we
19:48could see him having a bit of a heart-to-heart with Flavio Briatore in the
19:53garage afterwards and it's never nice for a driver you've got to rebuild it it's a
19:58confidence building process he's going through right now it wasn't his fault the
20:02crash either the tires were screaming and giving up grip the back end just to
20:07seem to get away from him I wouldn't put that down the driver error well I mean
20:11ultimately it was he's the one with the controls under him but it was he was
20:16fighting incredibly hard conditions like I said everyone was struggling with the
20:20final corner Paul Aaron who drove his car in FP1 almost did exactly the same thing
20:25so yeah it was just one of those those those difficult days as Hajar said I want
20:31to see a driver though keep pushing it's practice yeah you've got to work out the
20:36limits of addition on the track and okay yeah it ended up in a crash this time
20:41around but I'd rather see drivers pushing and he was pushing he was on a
20:44brand new set of soft tires and as he was on this lap just now so yeah that's his
20:49duty you have to push to the absolute limit and sometimes over them and it's a
20:53very difficult circuit this one Hungary is short track it pushes everyone's lap
20:59times naturally quite close to each other therefore and you have to dig really
21:04deep on this circuit but actually I saw a lot of drivers over driving their cars
21:08yesterday and it needed the circuit almost needed a bit more respect and um
21:12to approach it in a more gentle way to let the and Leclerc was very good at
21:17doing that FP1 yes yeah it just gave the car a bit of time let it do its thing
21:22saw Alex Albon there who by the way becomes the first driver to make 100 Grand Prix
21:27starts for Williams uh this weekend join them at the start of 2022
21:32amazes me Ted that he's the first that no other driver has ever done a hundred
21:36starts for Williams before have they not and and not without a podium
21:42yeah he's got he's not but he's got the hundred he's got the triple figures now we
21:47need the podium yes for Williams come on Alex we need a podium for Williams
21:51right uh Arvid Lindblad's not going anywhere because there's an issue with his
21:56power unit it's always a bit of a tell when you can see the uh the yellow barrier
22:00can you see that here the energy store restricted area and I can see the
22:04technicians from Red Bull powertrains are trying to figure out why the power
22:09unit it's not working it might just be the battery might be the control of
22:13electronics but it all comes under the the umbrella of power unit and I mean I'm
22:21an optimistic person Crofty I'd say maybe they'll have it fixed towards the end of
22:26the session but um I'm also realist and when I see that it looks like they're
22:32starting a power unit change then I think he's probably not going to make
22:38well let's let's find out Alan Plane is with us on the racing balls pit wall team
22:44principal Alan morning to you I wanted to start on a positive note but we'll start
22:49with Arvid Lindblad that doesn't look very positive at the moment my friend I just
22:53caught the end of Ted's comments there I'm a bit more optimistic I think we're
22:57going to get out and uh certainly for a run before the end of the session I think we've
23:01just fired it up um but I'm not 100% sure of that uh no no I think that I
23:06think there's
23:06every chance to to get out at least do one run maybe even two before the end
23:09brilliant what what was the issue can you tell us
23:12uh we we fired it up this morning the engine guys saw something they didn't like
23:17so it's a precautionary change just to make sure we're in good shape for this
23:20afternoon and tomorrow and Alan uh Crofty was saying that the curfew is broken
23:25last night as well was that on the same car was that on Arvid's car no that was the other
23:29car
23:29okay this has been a tough weekend yeah the guys have uh the guys have done us proud honestly
23:36the mechanics so uh I'm very confident that once we get to even to the end of this session
23:42but certainly to to before quali we'll have two cars in very good shape ready to go just get
23:47your money out money's worth out of them before the summer break Alan but exactly what was wrong
23:51with Liam's car uh it's a similar issue power unit issue so we've got both guys will um I don't
23:58think I'm telling any things I shouldn't say here but both both cars will have their spa power units
24:05uh in the car that they that they raced last last weekend and Alan when the cars were running
24:11successfully on circuit uh how was the performance were the team happy with the drivers happy with
24:16I know it was a really difficult day weather wise and such a challenge for them yeah it was a
24:22tough
24:22day with the wind um I think we we did struggle through the day I think Liam founder uh Liam
24:28and
24:28his and his engineers found a nice a nice setup compromise towards the end of fp2 and we saw him
24:34um saw him put a lap in he was much much happy with the car he was struggling in that
24:39last sector
24:4012 13 14 and found a direction uh yesterday so that's that's been uh put onto both cars and I
24:47think it's going to be tight I think I think I said at the start of the weekend I think
24:50with us and
24:51Audi this weekend it's going to be it's going to be very tight and and five or ten or five
24:56kilos of
24:56fuel difference yesterday will sway things so let's I don't think we'll get a clear answer this morning
25:01I think we'll still be very tight with them and we'll know this afternoon and just finally Alan before
25:06you leave us 52 degrees track temperature are there concerns about the condition of the track and the
25:11heat on it at the moment uh I don't know about the track itself I know there were some concerns
25:16about
25:17some it's a little bit breaking up yesterday and it's been a little bit bumpy I think our concern is
25:21on tyres and uh tyre degradation in those conditions but they're they're similar conditions that we ran in
25:29in Barcelona and uh actually in Austria as well on this same the same tyre compound so I think I
25:35think
25:35we've got it under control love it thanks Alan uh speak to you in a little while and uh well
25:39done
25:40on the optimism right to see some cheery optimism uh on a Saturday I'm not sure how optimistic they
25:44are at Cadillac though Sergio Perez bit of work going on on his car there I don't think we'll see
25:50him
25:50for some time too but as you can see Valtteri Bottas is currently out on track in the other uh
25:57Cadillac car
25:58the man has completed by the way the fewest amounts of Grand Prix laps by any driver uh this season
26:04368 out of 603 so far but he did start 17th in Belgium which is his and Cadillac's highest start
26:10of the year so far yeah well in general I've been really impressed with Cadillac's performance
26:15this year it's a tricky set of regulations to get your heads around brand new team and I think it's
26:22it's actually really helped them having two very experienced drivers like Bottas and Perez so
26:27you know they they both know their way around this very technical circuit tricky track to get right
26:33so uh I think that puts the team in really good stead and they've got so much experience as well
26:38from a lot of their staff and you see Bottas really fighting the car once again I mean it's become
26:43I'm quite accustomed to watching cars now see-sawing away at the wheel and losing control through the
26:49final corner as Alan Perman was saying that's where he felt like well Liam Lawson felt like he had to
26:55work on the car a lot and the tools that you can adjust the differential the the brake balance uh
27:01it's
27:01all brake by wire of course in these cars so and that can migrate as you brake deeper into the
27:06corner
27:07to give you a bit of a different balance so drivers working on that working with their engineering team
27:12and when you find a nice solution it's it's it's a good moment from that driver and engineer relationship
27:20that working relationship you have to just squeeze more performance out the car you feel more confident
27:25inside the car and then lap times become easier to achieve and and uh and that's what these test
27:31sessions are all about still a bit bumpy going into turn one oh yeah they might have filed a bit
27:37away
27:38but it's not come completely no we've we've seen this on other circuits haven't we before Austin springs
27:45to mind the back straight we saw it ground away and on a lot of the bumps as uh had
27:50some subsidence
27:51but as we watch Hulkenberg through turn 11 that's a great shot carry a lot of speed through that one
27:57before the braking into turn 12 that's where the wind was really behind them pushing the cars on so it's
28:03going to feel very different for them behind the wheel around corners like that today and uh forget
28:09who it was saying that we've we've made changes to the car and it makes i was had jars interview
28:13really good interview actually where he picked up on you make changes on the car and but if the
28:18conditions change it's almost impossible to read what the change was and and you end up sort of
28:23chasing your tail that's what i'm saying yesterday there's a danger of doing that um you've got to
28:27you've got to then trust that your forecast is right for saturday and for sunday and not go chasing
28:32it uh too much but this is where the simulators come into come into play as well back at base
28:37and we've gone through that in a in a controlled environment in a virtual world you can turn all
28:43the things off like wind they're a problem uh you you can turn it right down or completely off if
28:48you
28:48want to you can turn off tire degradation if you want to and focus on qualifying uh that's where you
28:55make setup change and you target that setup change rather than other factors blurring your your vision
29:02of what you so that's where the simulators come in into play out comes fernando alonso kimmy
29:09antonelli are getting ready to make his appearance we've had uh 14 minutes of this session so far nico
29:14hulkenberg with a 120.6 the fastest time that we have on the board about half a second from franco
29:29and welcome back to budapest and the hungara ring it's fp3 and we're nearly 19 minutes into this
29:38session and we are joined by frederick vesti from the mercedes formula one team who's been out on the
29:43track yesterday so you are our tame racing driver for the next half an hour how are you sir i'm
29:48very good
29:49obviously it's been an awesome weekend for me so far getting to drive these cars around angora ring
29:54is it's very special these cars are intense around this track we have lots of battery lots of engine
29:59power basically full deployment down every straight so yeah it was very fun so yesterday morning you're
30:06climbing into kimmy's car now like you and kimmy are teammates you've known him for a while but the
30:10pressure's on because i'm sure the last thing he said to you was good luck don't damage my car right
30:16well kimmy's pretty yeah kimmy's pretty fair on that actually he usually wants me to push and find the
30:23limit and yeah so toto have told me a few times don't crash the car and it's not really a
30:29good
30:29advice is it's kind of unfair on the driver yeah you don't really need that extra no i know pressures
30:34on you already isn't it i'm already dealing with it they used to say that to him when he was
30:37getting
30:38strapped in on the grid every time yeah just be careful out there we haven't got any spares yeah
30:41did they really yes well that's what they told me they told you anyway you would have if you were
30:45a
30:45team boss and that's why you weren't a team boss exactly but you also get a custard pie if you
30:49damage the car as well you know what kimmy's like yeah exactly have you been attacked with a custard
30:54pie yet not yet my birthday is in january so i'm very lucky it's sort of out of season you've
30:59given
30:59the game away now kimmy antonelli is going to be right on you oh yeah he's uh he's going to
31:03be
31:03throwing cakes everywhere so what was it like out there yesterday morning well it was it was tricky
31:08this track um obviously not much rest around the the track the tires are overheating quite easily
31:14um as we saw as well there was lots of people making mistakes with lockups and slides
31:19and it's really just because um of the the overheating especially sector three it's super easy that the
31:25rears are yeah overheating right something's happened to sergio peres down at uh hamilton turn two
31:30uh the new corner name oh dear there he is uh now he was late going out there was a
31:35fair bit of work
31:36going on on sergio's car in the garage and he has just pulled over to the side oh now is
31:42that brakes
31:42overheating yeah because he still had the engine on didn't he so uh you would have turned that off if
31:47that was a if that was a power unit issue that looks like rear brakes has really just immediately
31:51set on fire uh i wonder if they've forgotten to take off any kind of blanking when they've sent the
31:57car out because they were rushing to get it out there and yeah red flag so i thought just based
32:02on
32:02the angle of the car that wasn't any kind of spin that was he's he's realized straight away he's in
32:06trouble ted kravitz is down at cadillac so after you gave uh that little preview that checo perez
32:12might take a bit of time crofty i did go down to cadillac and was watching the work it was
32:17on the
32:17rear of the car but i think it was on the brakes and certainly i didn't see any blanking on
32:21the brakes
32:22as he went out so this looks like maybe the the brake by wire failed or the the uh the
32:28energy
32:28recovery off the rear axle made the rear brake calipers do too much work that they overheated
32:34obviously it is a problem that they've had before but uh i don't think it was connected with the uh
32:39the work they were doing because i watched that and they finished it quite steadily and uh they were
32:43happy that everything was uh was ready but clearly it was not i'll try and get some more information
32:48from the team thanks ted now we're just on board with sergio sadly facing forwards he did really
32:55well to stop that from going in the barrier yeah i lost the engine i had a massive break it
33:01looks like
33:01the the brakes are on fire on the back it's like someone just chucked an anchor out the back of
33:07the
33:07car and it's come to a grinding halt this is fernando alonso meanwhile in the aston martin right
33:13behind his teammate lance stroll who didn't know he was there or if he did know he was there
33:19didn't i see alonso looking up trying to avoid uh going off at turn one but the incident with lance
33:26stroll was uh was down at turn 11. that was almost more oh and then a bit falls off the
33:32car from
33:32fernando i don't know if that's a bit he's run over or a bit actually falling off the back of
33:36the car
33:36but that's almost some more rear suspension damage for stroll's car albeit for a very different reason
33:42yeah quite um see it all happens fred you know around the track we all just focused on you know
33:47the mercedes team it's all happening elsewhere it is and what just happened there with with
33:52stroll and alonso is it's really difficult something i experienced as well yesterday
33:55you with these new engines you have big turbos you have turbo like you need to build the turbo starting
34:00um your your lap and it basically means if you get slowed down you have you pay a big price
34:06and you
34:06basically lose power starting the lap and that's why we're seeing so much fighting track position
34:11and opening qualifying laps and so on and yeah i was in that in it in fp1 even what do
34:17you think
34:17could have happened there with perez by the way because i'm a little bit perplexed by that one
34:22straight out of the pits to build up that amount of rear tire of brake temperature instantly to the
34:27point they set on fire from having come out the pits it's something must have been dragging
34:32surely yeah it looked it for me it looked like the the rear brakes was just dragging yeah and it
34:37almost
34:37you know killed the engine and and then still was locking the rears so yeah very strange probably a
34:43systems issue yeah and and probably a big well you you're looking now if they're not going to get
34:50that car back until after this session two hours between this and qualifying if sergio comes out for
34:56qualifying that's a herculean effort in the garage and is that is that a power unit change i wonder
35:02that's going to going to be needed there maybe an element of the power unit but the actual engine
35:09was still running when he stopped so i think it could also be as simple as a setting on a
35:14computer
35:14with you know with all the the brake settings and so on i think it could be something very simple
35:20but with a big big issue so yesterday um on the track we never because you were doing fp1 and
35:28because
35:28of the red flag at fp2 and then he got uh went over the chicane on his second lap we
35:33never really saw
35:34what kimmy was capable of but what's the feeling from within mercedes qualifying pace wasn't great
35:40yesterday race pace looked right up there with ferrari yeah i think obviously kimmy missing fp1 it
35:47makes that fp2 slightly more difficult um but he was actually just unlucky he didn't get his lap in
35:52and there was a red flag and that sort of put him on the back foot with these soft tires
35:57you use them
35:58in one sector two sectors you go to the box and you can't reset them they they have already taken
36:03a big
36:03hit and that's why he was sliding around uh on his second attempt and didn't actually put a lap down
36:08but yeah the long runs was much more positive i think we we were probably lacking a bit of pace
36:14on
36:15on the quality sims yesterday um compared to where we usually are but we've done a lot of work
36:21overnight and and made some changes to the car and i'm expecting to make a step forward today
36:25this is a trade-off isn't there qualifying so important here you can't be third row no with all
36:30the race pace in the world if you're not in the front you're not going to get there on this
36:34track
36:34and you you need a good qualifying yeah crofty and i actually were just looking at who's won this
36:40race from how far back and i think you have to go back to was it 2022 or something with
36:44verstappen
36:45who started p10 but the rest of them are all all on the first or second row yeah so this
36:50is almost
36:51like a monaco situation on on this track if you want the stats i want the stats 40 previous world
36:58championship hungarian grand prix and only four of these races have been won from outside the top four
37:04yeah that's wild it's a monaco with without the walls basically yeah and and that's what it feels
37:09like as well when you're driving there is not much room but it's a great circuit to drive isn't it
37:13it comes at you so quickly corner after corner and you've got to be right on top of your game
37:19so
37:19i i don't know how you felt about your own performance yesterday because i know you're always
37:24as a driver you're always self-analyzing but it looks great from the outside how close you were to
37:29george yeah i was really happy uh it was around four tenths to george um it was my second soft
37:35tire
37:35in seven months in a former one car so i would call it half blindfolded jumping into these cars
37:41yeah not much previous knowledge um but just go and and have a go and it's not easy but i
37:47was really
37:47pleased with where i ended so look there you are oh yeah fred 72 is 72 your number or do
37:53you have to
37:54have that one no the teams get allocated two numbers and i can choose of those two so but it's
37:59sort of
37:59become my thing now doing these fp1s in 72 so so you're going to keep that when you get a
38:03seat
38:04next time around right so when you get a proper race seat exactly that's coming now you've been
38:08in our commentary box exactly this is how it works this is the step up the ladder yeah and for
38:13those
38:13though that have no chance ever of getting into a formula one car and have no idea what it's like
38:17how good is this mercedes car i mean i've driven the 22 car and every car since um and this
38:25car
38:26is different um i remember the first time i jumped into louis hamilton's car
38:30and he looked at me five minutes before jumping in he's like oh you're unlucky you're driving the
38:35worst car we've built in 22 and we've sort of only become better since then and this year's car
38:42obviously leading the constructors right now and i've worked on it and for the last year and a bit
38:48and it's been an amazing journey and then to finally drive it i can really feel that that it is
38:52special
38:53and it does give confidence especially in high speed it's it's a great car so tell you what then
38:58uh as you've been helping uh with this car and putting more into the sim than anthony uh ever
39:03would uh this is where you get the chance to take us through a lap of the hungaro ring in
39:08the car you
39:09were driving yesterday so uh 2.7 miles for kimmy antonelli and fred vesti yeah so opening the lap it
39:15seems like he's actually going for another uh warm-up lap oh kimmy let us down there we gave it
39:21a big
39:21build-up yeah but keep talking amongst yourselves for a minute and a half and we'll come back to this
39:25one
39:26yeah does it need to warm up laps one thing we saw yesterday which is a bit unexpected for this
39:32track
39:32actually is the tires need a lot of energy and the outlaps needs to be pushed quite hard and some
39:37of
39:37the drivers that was pushing the hardest actually was fast yesterday really so this is why we saw
39:42hamilton do his fastest arm and his second exactly that is not normal as well around for the past so
39:47yeah there is something on the tire they definitely need a lot of energy and that's probably why
39:52um kimmy is doing another when you say so fred when you say energy you mean the uh the sort
39:57of squash of
39:58the tire building up thermal temperature rather than the surface yes yeah so the the risk you go if you
40:04if you're too low on temperature and it's actually happened a little bit to me yesterday because i got
40:08holed up on my outlap um you are basically under undergripped and then you start sliding because you
40:15don't have grip but then you overheat the surface and then you lose lap time so it's sort of a
40:20big
40:20back backwards thinking you need to have more grip uh starting the lap and you will keep that grip
40:26around the lap the whole thing is absolutely bonkers right we've got tires at the softest in the range
40:31track temperature 52 degrees there's no grip towards the end of the lap because they're all
40:35overheating but yet you've got a really push on the outlap rather than the nursing doesn't sound
40:40right does it it's the difference between surface temperature the friction of it sliding on the surface
40:46of the track that overheats but the thermal that the bulk temperature of the tire is they're two
40:53very independent things you need soup not stress yeah warming up from the inside exactly and that's
41:00what's difficult when you come from uh from the simulator that i've been driving uh where we have
41:05optimal grip all the time and you get to this there is so many variables that's changing all the time
41:09and it's nailing all of those with the right timing and adding this complicated pu as well it makes
41:15it a big task for the drivers see that's why we need clever people like yourself for it in this
41:19sport
41:19look let's give me only five 100s out through the first sector and he's just without knowing he's
41:24giving himself more work in the simulator now with uh perfecting tire models working with the tire
41:29group yeah what are you doing what are you doing on tuesday i'm actually in america racing
41:37you'll have to do it all yourself and good luck uh by the way the formula one doesn't help with
41:41racing in america does it well i think they they help each other me racing in america in a sports
41:47car
41:47definitely helps me be ready to jump in and you know racing uh door to door really hard racing there
41:53it helps me be ready here and and yeah doing nothing for your jet lag that's that's the trouble
41:58on that one um but good luck we're gonna have to let you go um we want to see kimmy
42:02antinelli over
42:03the line here he's on the pace of lando norris at the moment things are hotting up here and goes
42:10fifth fastest only so has dropped a bit of pace towards the end of the lap georgia's lap looks a
42:15little bit better but it was three and a half tenths down by the second sector so uh yeah very
42:19quick
42:20first sector i don't know what happened to both mccedes he goes second fastest so a decent final sector
42:25as well on the face on the face of it this could be a a very intriguing battle for the
42:31rest of the
42:31weekend here yeah very much so one thing i was thinking about yesterday um the wind was a headwind
42:37into turn one and it's basically flipped 180 degrees and it's actually something that's been
42:41worked on in brackley in the sim there to try and maximize the car for today's wind and basically
42:48to to try and be as fast and quality as possible and but the lap times are actually a bit
42:52slower than
42:53that i was uh expecting so it probably means the wind is not helping the drivers today so that'll
42:58be an added challenge uh coming from yesterday so good to see you thanks for coming up to the
43:03commentary box it was a pleasure pleasure well done yesterday when's your next fp1 session oh i can't
43:07tell but um yeah sometime after the the summer break yeah that narrows it down to what exactly
43:13we'll see but i can't wait to be back in the car but that third set of brand new soft
43:17tires is waiting
43:18for you somewhere i can't wait uh good luck in america next weekend as well fred vesti uh the
43:23reserve driver development driver for mercedes the manager of kimmy antonelli's car yesterday
43:28uh with us live in the commentary box that's mega i know he's coming to the box before but i
43:33wasn't
43:33here for that one sadly what a top lad he is he's a great guy fast racing drivers you know
43:38he's his credentials in f2 so switched on with what you've got to do out there yeah and that's one
43:44of
43:45his real strengths actually what's it's what makes him such a good simulator driver as well
43:49he's all over it he's uh that's what you have to be these days as a grand prix driver or
43:55even a test
43:56driver meanwhile uh from great simulator drivers to someone who doesn't really put much faith in the
44:01simulator lewis hamilton goes fastest work that one out mr sim well he clearly misses the mercedes sim
44:09that's all i can say i feel sorry for him lewis hamilton undoing everything you're talking about with
44:15every revolution of the tire yes sir he just needed other people to do work for him in the sim
44:22that's
44:22and that it's working it's not like ferrari have stopped using their simulator says he personally
44:27like fred just said actually as we watch uh verstappen come out this final corner he pops it into p4
44:34with the fastest middle sector so the red bull is got speed in there somewhere as we saw yesterday
44:40but fred um he was saying that even himself surprised to see the lap times today not matching
44:47what you saw and see him and and his feeling in fp1 wasn't quite the same and that's what lewis
44:52as a kind of seat of the pants driver oh speaking of actually i'm lawson getting it wrong in turn
44:57four
44:58but lewis is a seat of the pants driver he he struggles with that interpretation yeah of what
45:04the sim tells him ouch i was tough on the floor yeah just a bit it was wasn't it yeah
45:10we've seen cars
45:12hammer the floor there you're better off going even further over rather than just trying to ride the
45:16curves i did exactly the same thing you could you could sit and it's just completely offline now for
45:22uh for turn five and he's talked about track minutes quite a bit in the build-up to this
45:26and how he's actually exceeding track limits quite a lot during races it it seems to be a penalty but
45:32no i think it's one thing as a young driver i think he needs to work on still uh is
45:39is he does seem
45:40to be the driver that gets pinged the most for track limits and i think it's one thing he has
45:46to kind
45:46of just work on bring that back just slightly but it is it's hard to do right ted where are
45:52you
45:52outside mercedes so the question did you uh say by the way that antonelli's lap was deleted
45:58property so he's now the 198 was yes i haven't said it but yeah and it's now is now had
46:06that time
46:07deleted so the question is is it the car with all of those overnight improvements that mercedes have
46:14made courtesy of fred vesti telling us there or is it kimmy not quite getting it in and the answer
46:20i have for you so far it's kimmy uh is that team radio or just text no just do it
46:24just to text okay
46:25um so kimmy has come back into the pit box at mercedes he's been offered a quick front wing change
46:32he's turned it down he's cooled his tires and he's gone again so uh i think after you see leclerc
46:38then maybe you'll get kimmy a more representative time by the way we have a new entrant to the uh
46:44into
46:44the guild of pit reporters oh who's something anthony davidson has turned down in the past but uh
46:49bernie collins and karuna chandock have accepted guild yep they've accepted their cards and we've
46:54had other racing drivers being members of the guild of pit reporters likes of ralph schumacher
46:57juan pablo montoya and uh the newest member of the guild of pit reporters dorian pan oh the uh last
47:04year's f1 academy uh championship winner she is joining me down the pit lane as a pit reporter
47:10for french tv welcome to the guild of pit reporters dorian say magnifique as they as they might say
47:17in the french department of the guild brilliant those nose are onions uh absolutely um superb
47:24reporter uh dorian pan and a fine driver too charlotte claire fastest in the middle sector
47:29saw max verstappen do that and then maybe run out of grip a little bit towards the end of the
47:33lap is
47:34charlotte claire experiencing familiar feelings certainly looks like it but crosses the line
47:39with nearly four tenths in hand on his teammate lewis hamilton and antonelli on his second attempt now
47:45much much closer this is where we thought the performance should be or could be from mercedes
47:51and particularly with antonelli who ran wide in that uh turn four over the curbs we saw that lap was
47:57deleted but he'd crossed the line still around seven tenths away despite that massive error so where's
48:03that putting him second at this point only a tenth and a half away now this is where this is
48:08where we
48:08thought they would be in comparison to ferrari meanwhile what's russell been up to a huge lock
48:13up in towards turn one and like you said it's being ground down that surface and there's to try and
48:19mitigate the bumps but drivers still finding it very tricky and i think like fred bestie was saying
48:25that with the wind flipped almost 180 from yesterday you've lost that nice headwinds down towards
48:31turn one yeah that's going to make it harder to slow the car down obviously a lot more downforce into
48:36a headwind as if the air flows over the car even faster well we saw charleclerc making his way to
48:43turn one i think it was alex albon ahead of him had a big lock up because there was a
48:48massive cloud of
48:49of smoke down there you this is the corner a headwind is absolutely beautiful as you're heading
48:56downhill into a very heavy braking zone headwind gorgeous tailwind not nice and that's why i think
49:03you get used to that grip from yesterday with the car feeling gripping under the braking and then also
49:08into turn four if it was a headwind into turn one when you get into the apex of turn four
49:14you're back
49:15into that headwind and i think that's what caught kimmy out on his first attempt and also lawson as well
49:21so you you readjusted that as you go so liam lawson one of only five drivers that have run the
49:29medium
49:29compound tire in this session everyone else running the softs and focusing very much on the qualifying
49:35performance slightly different strategy at racing bulls and both lawson and arvid limblad with power
49:43unit changes going back to the spa unit as a precaution after they'd seen a few things they didn't like
49:49in the
49:49data when they were were firing up carlos science has just put in his best lap and gone p18 only
49:57as a
49:58result of it we still haven't got a time from arvid limblad and sergio peres stopped by the side of
50:04the
50:04track with what we think was a rear brake issue certainly they caught fire and uh when he came to
50:10standstill they had to get the
50:11so
