Following Jesus doesn't mean living your life terrified that another Christian might disapprove of you.
But it also doesn't mean ignoring how your choices affect other people.
That tension became very real for me after someone questioned the band T-shirts I sometimes wear while sharing messages about Jesus.
The criticism gave me two choices.
I could immediately dismiss it because I knew my intentions.
Or I could listen long enough to see whether God might teach me something through an uncomfortable conversation.
I chose to look again at 1 Corinthians 8 and 1 Corinthians 9.
Paul's message challenged me.
Christian maturity isn't simply knowing your rights. It means caring enough about another person's spiritual well-being that sometimes you voluntarily surrender something you have every right to keep.
But voluntary sacrifice is not the same as allowing someone else's personal standards to control your conscience.
Jesus helps us understand the difference.
He wasn't afraid of being misunderstood.
He spent time with people others rejected. He crossed social boundaries. He continued His mission even when religious leaders criticized what they saw.
Yet Jesus was never selfish.
The One with all authority became a servant.
The One who could have demanded everything gave Himself for others.
That's the kind of freedom worth pursuing.
Not the freedom to shout, "Nobody tells me what to do."
The freedom to listen without fear.
To change without humiliation.
To stand without anger.
To sacrifice without resentment.
Maybe you're dealing with criticism right now.
Before becoming defensive, ask whether there's something worth hearing.
But before surrendering your conscience, ask whether you're responding to God's truth or simply somebody else's expectations.
Keep coming back to Jesus.
He knows how to make us both stronger and softer at the same time.

00:00So, apparently, one of the greatest spiritual controversies of our time is my t-shirt collection.
00:10You know, I didn't see that one coming.
00:13I thought maybe I would get challenged on something big, like my pride, or patience, or forgiveness, or loving my
00:22enemies.
00:23Nope.
00:24T-shirts.
00:26And look, I get it.
00:28Some of my t-shirts I wear are band t-shirts, and some have dark artwork.
00:34Some have bands that have songs that deal with dark themes.
00:38So, somebody today basically said,
00:42You talk about Jesus, but what about those shirts?
00:47What if a newer Christian sees that and gets confused?
00:52And then it was suggested that I read 1 Corinthians 8 and 1 Corinthians 9.
01:00So, I did.
01:02And here's the funny part.
01:04I went into this thinking,
01:07Okay, let's see why I am right.
01:10You ever do that?
01:12You open your Bible hoping God will confirm your argument,
01:16and somehow God ends up working on you instead?
01:21Well, today God worked on me.
01:24And God, I gotta tell you,
01:26very inconvenient.
01:29Because when I read 1 Corinthians 8,
01:31I realized Paul was not saying,
01:40If I changed every time someone dislikes something about me,
01:45I would need a costume department and a full-time consultant.
01:49You know what I mean?
01:51Paul was talking about something much deeper.
01:54He was talking about love.
01:57The issue was food sacrifice to idols.
02:00Some Christians understood that the idol had no real power.
02:05Others had a history connected to that world.
02:09And for them,
02:10the same food could be a real spiritual problem.
02:15So, Paul says in effect,
02:18Don't get so excited about proving your freedom
02:21that you forget about the person beside you.
02:24And I thought,
02:25Okay, that's fair.
02:27Because I can get technically right,
02:30and I can still be a jerk.
02:33Those two things can absolutely coexist.
02:37I've seen it.
02:38I've probably demonstrated it
02:41more than once.
02:43So that part did hit me.
02:46If something I'm doing is genuinely making it harder
02:49for somebody to move toward Jesus,
02:52I'm going to care about that.
02:55Not because they control me.
02:57Because I care about them.
03:00And that's a huge difference for me.
03:03So then I get to 1 Corinthians 9.
03:06And Paul starts talking about his rights.
03:09He knows what he is free to do.
03:12He defends those rights.
03:14But then he's willing to give some of them up
03:18for the sake of the gospel.
03:22Now that's what really got to me.
03:25Paul wasn't bullied into surrender.
03:28He chose it.
03:29He wasn't saying,
03:31Fine, everybody wins.
03:32I'll just disappear.
03:34He was saying,
03:36I know what I have the right to do.
03:39But if giving something up
03:41helps somebody get closer to Christ,
03:44I can live with that.
03:46And friends,
03:48that is strength.
03:50And then, of course,
03:52I started thinking about Jesus,
03:54as usual.
03:56And Jesus had this incredible ability
03:58to make religious people uncomfortable.
04:01He ate with people they did not approve of.
04:05He spent time with people
04:07who had terrible reputations.
04:10He touched people others avoided.
04:12He went places respected people questioned.
04:16And the religious crowd?
04:19Well, they kept wondering
04:20what kind of example he was setting.
04:24Sound familiar?
04:27Jesus was constantly being judged
04:30by people who thought
04:31holiness should look more
04:34like their preference.
04:36And Jesus did not chase their approval.
04:40But here's what makes Jesus so different.
04:44He also wasn't trying to shock anybody.
04:48He wasn't being rebellious
04:50just to prove a point.
04:52Jesus was not walking around saying,
04:56look how free I am.
04:58He was focused on people.
05:00And that's the lesson.
05:02Jesus was free enough
05:03not to be controlled by criticism.
05:08And he was loving enough
05:10to make everything
05:11not about himself.
05:14That's a combination
05:16that I want in my life.
05:18Because sometimes
05:19when somebody challenges me,
05:21my first thought is not
05:23what can I learn here?
05:25My first thought is more like
05:27would you like a PowerPoint presentation
05:30on why you're wrong?
05:32I can have the slides ready by lunch.
05:35But Jesus keeps teaching me something better.
05:39Something that is more mature.
05:42Because sometimes the mature response
05:44is not defending yourself.
05:46Sometimes, like today,
05:49it's listening.
05:51Sometimes it's asking,
05:53is there anything here
05:55I should actually think about?
05:56And sometimes the answer will be yes.
06:00Maybe I really am being careless.
06:04Maybe pride is involved.
06:07Maybe I'm holding on to something
06:09only because I don't want anybody
06:11telling me what to do.
06:12And that's worth examining.
06:15You know, sometimes
06:16the answer is also no, however.
06:20Sometimes somebody is handing you
06:22their personal conviction
06:24and trying to turn it into
06:26God's universal command.
06:28And you have to know the difference,
06:30my friends.
06:31That takes humility.
06:33It also will take courage.
06:37So, here's where I landed
06:39on the t-shirt thing.
06:41If I knew one particular shirt
06:43was genuinely creating
06:45a real obstacle
06:46for someone who was trying
06:48to find Jesus,
06:51could I take it off?
06:53Of course I could.
06:54It's a shirt.
06:55I'm pretty sure I would survive.
06:57I have others,
06:59and probably too many,
07:01if we're being honest.
07:02And if laying down something
07:05that small helped somebody
07:07hear the message of Christ
07:08more clearly,
07:09then what exactly
07:12am I protecting?
07:13A piece of cotton?
07:15My image?
07:16My pride?
07:17That's not worth much.
07:19But on the other hand,
07:21am I going to live
07:22my entire life terrified
07:23by that somebody somewhere
07:26might not approve
07:27of what I'm wearing?
07:29No.
07:30Because Jesus did not teach us
07:32to live that way either.
07:34Jesus was misunderstood
07:36understood all the time.
07:37He kept loving people anyway.
07:40So maybe the real lesson
07:42isn't about t-shirts at all.
07:44Maybe the shirt
07:46was just the thing
07:47God used to get
07:48my attention today.
07:50Maybe the real question
07:51is this.
07:53Am I secure enough
07:54in Jesus
07:55that I don't have
07:56to prove myself?
07:58That's what I want.
08:01I want to be able to say
08:02others don't control
08:04my conscience,
08:05but I care enough
08:07to listen.
08:08I want to be able to change
08:10without feeling like I lost.
08:13I want to be able to stand firm
08:15without becoming obnoxious.
08:20I want to be able
08:21to give something up
08:22without announcing
08:24to everybody
08:25how sacrificial I am
08:27because nothing ruins
08:29a good act of humility
08:30quite like making sure
08:32everyone knows about it.
08:35Jesus had all authority
08:37and he washed feet.
08:39I want you to think
08:41about that for a second.
08:42The one who had nothing
08:44to prove
08:44still chose the towel.
08:47The one who could have
08:49demanded everything
08:50chose to serve.
08:53The one who was
08:54constantly misunderstood
08:56never stopped loving people
08:59and neither will I.
09:01And that's where I think
09:031 Corinthians 8 and 9
09:05point us.
09:06Sometimes love says
09:08let it go.
09:10Sometimes love says
09:11stand firm.
09:13And sometimes love says
09:16maybe
09:17don't turn the t-shirt
09:19into a theological crisis.
09:21We can smile at that.
09:24But the lesson is serious.
09:27You don't have to live
09:28controlled by everybody's opinion.
09:31And you don't have to live
09:32obsessed with proving
09:34your freedom either.
09:36You can live somewhere better.
09:38You can live like Jesus.
09:40Strong enough to stand.
09:42And humble enough to listen.
09:45Free enough to surrender.
09:48Loving enough
09:49to know when.
09:51And if God can use
09:53a band t-shirt
09:54to teach me that
09:55then apparently
09:57nothing in my closet
09:58is safe
09:59from becoming
10:00a Bible lesson.
10:04Oh, what a beautiful day.
10:06I tell you,
10:06this was really good.
10:08This comes up
10:09every once in a while
10:10and I appreciate
10:11all the input
10:12all the feedback.
10:14But if I were to
10:15show up here tomorrow
10:16looking differently
10:18and not being true
10:19to myself
10:20would I really be
10:22bringing my heart
10:23to God?
10:24You know,
10:25God could have
10:25chose anybody
10:26to do this
10:27to build this
10:29kind of a following.
10:30I don't advertise.
10:32I don't pay for SEO.
10:34I'm just a dad
10:35sitting in a bedroom
10:37that we don't use
10:38except when guests
10:39come over.
10:40Talking to you
10:41about Jesus.
10:42I don't make any money
10:44from this.
10:44I do it out of the
10:46kindness of my heart.
10:48But if I showed up
10:50tomorrow
10:51not being me,
10:54you know,
10:55I just wouldn't feel
10:56right about any of this
10:58because God
10:59chose me.
11:01He knew about
11:01the band t-shirts.
11:03He knew about
11:04the bald head,
11:05the lazy eye,
11:06the everything,
11:07the handicap.
11:09He knew everything
11:10about me.
11:11He could have
11:12picked anybody,
11:13but he saw
11:14something here.
11:16And I wish
11:17everybody
11:18could see
11:19and hear
11:21what God sees.
11:24He picked
11:25this place
11:26to build
11:26something that
11:28shares his love
11:29with humanity.
11:31I wish
11:32that we
11:33all could
11:33see that,
11:34that that's
11:35what's here.
11:36See beyond the
11:38shirt,
11:38God does.
11:39God doesn't care
11:40what I'm wearing.
11:40He doesn't care
11:41what you're wearing.
11:42All he cares about
11:43is your heart.
11:44And it says that
11:46in the user guide.
11:47Pull out your Bible
11:48and look it up.
11:50And that's
11:51the whole deal.
11:52This was a great
11:53conversation.
11:55It really got me
11:56thinking today,
11:57but I think
11:58on the t-shirt
11:59thing,
11:59I'm just going to

12:22flipped me

12:25I am a totally
12:26different person
12:27than I used to be.

12:29on different things.

12:33being born again
12:35in Christ.
12:36And I'm just
12:37trying to share
12:38that with people.
12:39Look beyond
12:40the t-shirt.
12:41This shirt here,
12:43just a black
12:44t-shirt
12:44with a cool
12:45white painted
12:46symbol on it.
12:47And my wife
12:47brought it to me
12:48this morning.
12:49You've seen me
12:50wear it
12:50in a few
12:51hundred videos.
12:52It doesn't
12:53change the love
12:54of the message.
12:56These are
12:56human things.
12:58We came up
12:59with this,
12:59this symbol.
13:00We come up
13:02with all
13:02of this,
13:03and then we
13:03hold others
13:04accountable to
13:05things that
13:05humans made up.
13:07It's not
13:07in the Bible
13:08anywhere where
13:09God chose
13:10somebody or
13:13didn't choose
13:14somebody based
13:15on what they
13:16were wearing.
13:16I want to
13:17ask you a
13:18question.
13:18If clothing
13:19was,
13:20and all
13:20of these
13:21things were
13:21so important
13:22to Jesus,
13:23he called
13:24fishermen
13:25off boats.
13:27Fishermen that
13:28had been out
13:28working in
13:29tunics and
13:31the hot
13:32heat on
13:33the ocean,
13:34pulling in
13:34fishing nets,
13:35sweating.
13:36Do you know
13:37what men,
13:39I mean,
13:40I don't want
13:40to offend
13:41the apostles,
13:42but I'm
13:43sure as men
13:44they probably
13:45didn't smell
13:46the best,
13:48and, you
13:49know,
13:49they were
13:49probably dirty
13:50from their
13:51work,
13:51so I'm
13:51sure their
13:52clothing didn't
13:53look like
13:5390% of the
13:55people who
13:55go to church
13:56on Sunday.
13:57And you know
13:58what?
13:58He chose
13:59them anyway.
14:01He chose
14:02them,
14:02and he gave
14:03them authority.
14:05I want you to
14:06think about that.
14:07He never once
14:08looked at their
14:09clothing or
14:10how they
14:10smelled or
14:11if their
14:12hair was
14:13perfect.
14:14Where in the
14:15Bible does
14:16God pick
14:16people like
14:17that?
14:18Have you
14:19ever noticed
14:19he picks
14:20real people
14:21who have a
14:22real heart
14:23and will
14:24actually show
14:25up?
14:26And that
14:26doesn't always
14:27look the same
14:28as what the
14:30media or
14:31commercials or
14:32advertisements have
14:34made us to
14:35believe is true.
14:37You know,
14:37you can look
14:38on America
14:38has got
14:40whatever,
14:41you know,
14:42the show
14:42where people
14:43sing and
14:44stuff.
14:44They always
14:45pick the
14:46perfect people.
14:47Where are
14:48the Tom
14:48Petty's in
14:50the world
14:50today?
14:51You think
14:52if Tom
14:52Petty went
14:53on one of
14:53these talent
14:54shows,
14:55they'd pick
14:55him?
14:56He wasn't
14:57the best
14:57looking guy
14:58in the world,
14:59but I'm
14:59going to tell
14:59you something.
15:00The guy
15:00had talent
15:01like you
15:01couldn't
15:01believe.
15:03I bet
15:04if I were,
15:05you saw me
15:05limping down
15:06the street
15:07with my
15:07lazy eye
15:08and my
15:09bald head
15:10and my
15:11awkward
15:12mannerisms
15:12because I've
15:13had a stroke
15:14and I have
15:15a disability,
15:16I bet most
15:17people wouldn't
15:18say,
15:19hey,
15:19that guy
15:20has a half
15:22a million
15:22subscribers on
15:23YouTube and
15:24millions of
15:26people listen
15:26to his
15:27podcast across
15:2919 separate
15:30platforms.
15:31And he talks
15:32about Jesus
15:33and he's a
15:34really good
15:35husband and
15:35a good
15:36father and
15:37he tries in
15:38life to do
15:39the best that
15:40he can every
15:41single day and
15:42God counts on
15:43him to show
15:44up.
15:45You know
15:46what?
15:46They may not
15:47think that,
15:50but it would
15:51be a shame
15:52if they
15:53disregarded
15:54that because
15:56of the t-shirt
15:57I was wearing.
