00:00Suniti Maharaj believes the Prime Minister's remarks were intended to steer independent
00:05senators toward a particular outcome.
00:08She tells the Morning Edition, while political rhetoric has often been used to shape parliamentary
00:13outcomes, independent senators must remain guided by their constitutional responsibility.
00:20I think that I take that all under the heading of a preemptive political strike, in that
00:31I think it could have the psychological impact of people needing to prove that they are independent
00:40and I think from the Prime Minister's perspective, an independent person would vote for the government
00:46in this case.
00:47However, Maraj stresses that independent senators are mature, strong-minded individuals who
00:54must act with institutional autonomy, free from intimidation or coercion.
01:00She says Parliament is the theatre of politics where negotiation is expected, but no senator
01:06should feel pressured by rhetoric.
01:09No one needs to feel intimidated.
01:11You argue your point and you take everything into consideration.
01:15You listen carefully to what the government side is trying to say.
01:19You listen carefully to what the opposition is saying.
01:21You consult your people.
01:23You read the law.
01:24You think about it.
01:25And you vote.
01:26And you vote with a clear conscience.
01:28And it falls wherever it falls.
01:31You know, let the chips fall where they may.
01:33Maharaj also renewed calls for constitutional reform, pointing out that presidents are often selected
01:40through a process determined by the government's parliamentary majority.
01:44With the current presidential term ending in 2028, she said, cooperation between the executive
01:51and the presidency is essential for national stability, reflecting on her own tenure.
01:57Maharaj notes that while she was appointed by the president, there was no interference in the execution of her duties.

02:13Like actually, there's no interface to supply.
02:14You know, there have to be a lack of specific activities.
02:16Then you can take anything you need to try and anger and serve yourself.
02:18You're okay.
02:18It might get a lot, you won't be able to try and anger.
02:21I love the country.
02:22Like you.
02:24There's a glorious time party.
02:26So you stupidly.
