Jonathan David rejoint l’Atlético de Madrid dans le cadre d’un prêt en provenance de la Juventus. Sur le papier, le profil ne faisait pas forcément rêver après une saison compliquée à Turin, mais les conditions négociées rendent l’opération beaucoup plus intéressante pour les Colchoneros : le prêt est gratuit et aucune indemnité n’est versée à la Juve.  L’Atlético dispose surtout d’une option d’achat non obligatoire fixée à 25 millions d’euros. Si elle est levée, ce montant pourra être réglé sur quatre exercices financiers. Son salaire brut est estimé autour de 11 millions d’euros par saison et, d’après AS, les deux clubs se le partageront, avec une part importante qui resterait à la charge de la Juventus.  La question concerne maintenant son rôle dans l’effectif. Julián Alvarez est finalement resté à Madrid, même si son avenir pourrait redevenir un sujet dès le mercato hivernal, tandis qu’Alexander Sørloth reste lui aussi au club malgré les intérêts reçus, notamment celui de la Juventus. Jonathan David apporte donc avant tout une alternative supplémentaire et un profil différent en attaque.  Le pari peut aussi être celui de retrouver le Jonathan David de Lille. Son passage à Turin a été difficile, mais le contexte offensif de la Juventus ces dernières années n’a pas aidé plusieurs attaquants à s’installer durablement. Certains y ont perdu en rendement ou en temps de jeu avant de retrouver de meilleures sensations ailleurs.  Avec un prêt sans indemnité et une option à 25 millions, l’Atlético limite donc fortement le risque financier. Si David retrouve son niveau lillois, le club pourra conserver un attaquant encore dans ses meilleures années à un prix raisonnable.
