Esteban Lepaul fait partie des noms évoqués autour de l’Atlético de Madrid après sa très grosse saison en Ligue 1. L’attaquant français, passé notamment par le SAS Épinal et le SCO d’Angers, a terminé meilleur buteur du championnat avec 21 réalisations, au point d’intégrer plusieurs débats autour de l’équipe de France malgré l’absence de convocation.  Son profil possède plusieurs qualités intéressantes pour un club comme l’Atlético. Lepaul se distingue surtout par son sens du but et son placement. Même si certains lui reprochent de marquer beaucoup de buts dans la surface ou des “tap-ins”, cela traduit aussi sa capacité à lire les actions, attaquer les bons espaces et se rendre disponible au bon moment.  Physiquement, l’attaquant présente cependant quelques limites. Il ne possède pas un gabarit impressionnant, même s’il reste capable d’être utile dans le jeu aérien. Techniquement, il ne fait pas partie des attaquants les plus spectaculaires, mais ce n’est pas forcément ce qu’on lui demanderait dans une rotation offensive à l’Atlético.  La vraie interrogation concerne surtout le contexte du transfert. Lepaul ne sort finalement que d’une seule très grande saison au plus haut niveau, et beaucoup de joueurs ont déjà explosé sur une courte période avant de retomber ensuite. Son adaptation à un club du niveau de l’Atlético reste donc une inconnue importante.  Dans l’idée, son arrivée pourrait avoir du sens à certaines conditions : un prix raisonnable, un départ de Sorloth et l’acceptation d’un rôle de remplaçant.
