00:00If I could keep only one thing under my sink and no other, if I had to give up every
00:05bottle
00:06and jar in the house but one, I would keep my vinegar without a moment's thought.
00:11For there is no humbler nor more useful thing in a whole household than a jug of plain white
00:18vinegar, and most folks use it for pickling and salad and never dream of the dozen other
00:24jobs it does about a house, cheaper and gentler than any costly bottle from the store.
00:29So today, I am going to show you the many old uses of plain vinegar, beginning with the
00:35one that surprises folk most, what it does poured into a toilet, and going on through
00:40the whole house, and even to a thing or two you would never guess.
00:45Stay with me to the end, for the last few will surprise you.
00:48Let me show you.
00:49Here is the thing to understand first, the one simple fact that explains why vinegar
00:55does so many of its jobs.
00:57Vinegar is an acid, a mild and safe one, and a great deal of the grime and trouble in a
01:03house is the opposite sort of thing, the hard water scale, the lime, the rust, the mineral
01:09crust, all of which an acid dissolves.
01:12So wherever you have that chalky white scale, or that orange rust, or that hard mineral buildup,
01:18vinegar is very often your answer.
01:21For it dissolves what soap and scrubbing cannot touch.
01:24And it cuts grease and lifts odors besides.
01:27Now I will tell you plainly what it does and does not do, for I always will.
01:32Vinegar cleans and dissolves and freshens wonderfully.
01:35And it does knock back some of the mustiness and the little troubles.
01:39But it is not a hospital disinfectant that kills every last germ, so I will not claim that for
01:45it.
01:46What it truly is, is the finest cheap cleaner and dissolver and freshener there is, and
01:52that is a great deal.
01:53Now let me take you through its uses.
01:55Quick word before we go further.
01:57My name is Esther Yoder, and the old household ways handed down to me, the kind I am sharing
02:03today, and a great many more besides, are far more than I could ever fit into one video.
02:09I have gathered the whole of them into a book, and you will find it at EliasYoder.com.
02:15If today's tips serve you, that is where the rest of what my mother and grandmother taught
02:20me lives, all in the one place.
02:22Now, to the vinegar.
02:24My grandmother kept a jug of vinegar always at hand, and reached for it a dozen times
02:29a day.
02:30And she used to say that vinegar was the poor woman's whole cupboard of cleaners in a single
02:35bottle, that anything the fancy sprays promised, her vinegar did for pennies, and that a woman
02:40who understood her vinegar was never at the mercy of the store.
02:44So here are her uses for it, beginning where the hard water does its worst, which is the
02:49toilet and the tub.
02:50Let us start with the toilet, and what happens when you put vinegar to that hard crusty scale
02:56and rust that builds up.
02:57You know the stains, the chalky ring, the orange rust marks, the hard build up that no brush
03:03will scrub away, in the bowl and, worse and unseen, inside the tank where the water sits.
03:09That is all mineral, hard water scale and rust, and it is exactly what vinegar dissolves.
03:15So here is the way of it, and I will give you the tank especially, for folk forget the tank,
03:20and it is where the trouble breeds.
03:22Now there are two ways, and I will give you both honestly.
03:25The first way uses baking soda along with the vinegar, and I will be straight with you about
03:31it as I always am.
03:32The soda and the vinegar together will foam up grandly.
03:35But understand that the acid and the soda are largely cancelling each other in that fizz,
03:40so do not think the foaming is some special magic.
03:43The vinegar does the real work on the scale.
03:45Still, for a general clean and freshen, it does no harm to use a little soda for its scouring
03:51and its sweetening.
03:52If you like, warm a glass of vinegar until it is just warm, not hot, and stir in a spoon
03:58of baking soda, and pour that into the tank of an evening, and let it sit the whole night
04:03through, and it loosens the build up by morning.
04:06Repeat it if the build up is heavy.
04:08But the second way, the vinegar alone, works better on the hard scale, for the vinegar keeps
04:14its full acid strength when it is not spent fizzing against soda.
04:19And here is the proper way to do the tank.
04:23First, shut off the little valve that feeds the tank, and flush to empty the water out,
04:29so the tank sits empty and you are working on the bare stained surfaces, not diluting your
04:35vinegar in a tank full of water.
04:38Wipe the inside dry with a cloth.
04:40Then, take cloth soaked in vinegar and lay them right against the stained and scaled places
04:47inside the tank, pressed against the worst of it, and leave them to sit and soak a good
04:54few hours, and longer for heavy scale.
04:58The vinegar dissolves the mineral crust while it sits.
05:01Then, wipe and scrub the loosened scale away, and here mind one thing.
05:08Use a non-metal scraper or brush, never a metal one, for metal will scratch and scar the porcelain
05:16and the workings.
05:17Turn the water back on, flush it through, and your tank is clean and clear, and your toilet
05:24runs and fills, the better for it.
05:26And the bowl you do the same.
05:29Vinegar sat against the scale and rust to dissolve it, as I have shown you before.
05:34And the very same vinegar does your bathtub, and your basin, and your tile, wherever the
05:41hard water leaves its chalky scale and its soap scum.
05:44For it is all the same mineral trouble, and the same acid answer.
05:50Wipe or spray the vinegar on.
05:52Let it sit a while to dissolve the scale, and wipe it away.
05:56And the tub comes up bright, and the faucets shine.
05:59There is scarcely a hard water trouble in a bathroom that a little vinegar and a little
06:05patience will not dissolve.
06:07Now here is a rule of safety I set down plainly, the same I always give.
06:13For it matters more than any tip.
06:16Never mix your vinegar with bleach, nor use the one right after the other on the same spot.
06:22For bleach and vinegar together make a poison gas that has truly harmed folk.
06:28Many keep bleach about for the toilet.
06:31If you do, keep it well away from your vinegar, and never let the two meet.
06:37Vinegar does the job on its own.
06:39You have no need to cross them.
06:41Now let us go through the rest of the house.
06:44For the toilet is only the beginning of what a jug of vinegar does.
06:49For your windows and your mirrors, a splash of vinegar in water, wiped on and polished
06:55off with a lint-free rag or crumpled newspaper, leaves the glass clear and streak-free.
07:02No blue bottle needed.
07:04For a greasy cupboard or countertop, vinegar in warm water cuts the grease.
07:09For a smelly drain, a hot vinegar flush freshens it, as I have shown you.
07:15For your kettle or your pots, gone crusty with hard water scale inside, boil a little vinegar
07:21and water in them, and the scale dissolves and pours away.
07:25For the shower head clogged with scale, tie a bag of vinegar over it to soak, and the spray
07:32runs true again.
07:33There is hardly a corner of a house that plain vinegar does not serve, and it is why my grandmother
07:40kept it always by.
07:41And here is one for the odors, for vinegar is a great swallower of bad smells, not by covering
07:48them, but by neutralizing them.
07:50When a room has gone stale, or a cooking smell or a smoke smell lingers, or the house has been
07:57shut up, set out a small bowl of plain vinegar in the room and leave it a while, and it
08:03quietly
08:03draws the bad smell right out of the air, and then the vinegar smell itself fades off and
08:10leaves the room fresh.
08:11A bowl of vinegar set on the counter after you fry fish or onions, or in a musty room,
08:18clears the air for nothing.
08:20It is the plainest air freshener there is, and it truly works where the sprayed perfumes
08:25only pile one smell atop another.
08:28Now, let me give you a use in the laundry, for vinegar earns its keep at the wash line
08:33too.
08:34For the sweat stains that yellow and stiffen the underarms of a good shirt, which are a
08:39trouble to shift, here is the vinegar way.
08:43Pour or sprinkle a good amount of plain white vinegar right onto the sweat stained places,
08:48and let it sit and soak in a good ten minutes or more, and then rinse it and wash the
08:54shirt
08:54as usual.
08:54And the vinegar breaks down and lifts that sweat stain and the stiffness and the smell
09:00with it, and the shirt comes up fresh.
09:03A splash of vinegar in the rinse water of a wash, besides, softens the clothes and cuts
09:09any soapy residue and takes out odors, a natural fabric softener for pennies.
09:15Vinegar in the wash is an old laundress's secret worth knowing.
09:19And now, since I promised you a surprise or two you would never guess, here is one from
09:24the old days that many a woman swore by.
09:27Vinegar for the hair.
09:29It sounds odd, but a rinse of diluted vinegar leaves the hair wonderfully smooth and shining,
09:36for it cuts the soap residue that dulls the hair and lays the hair smooth.
09:41You mix one part plain vinegar with two parts water, and after you have washed your hair,
09:47you pour or spray that over it.
09:49Let it sit a minute or two, and rinse it out with clean water, and your hair comes out soft
09:54and silky and shining, with the smell fading off as it dries.
09:59The old women used it before ever there was a bottle of anything else, and it costs almost
10:04nothing.
10:05That is a use most folks never dreamed of.
10:09Now think a moment about why we came to fill a whole cupboard with a different costly bottle
10:15for every job.
10:16A toilet cleaner, and a glass cleaner, and a tub cleaner, and a drain cleaner, and an air
10:21freshener and a fabric softener, each in its own bottle bought again and again, when a single
10:28jug of plain vinegar does the lot for pennies.
10:31It is worse than a plot, for no one had to arrange it.
10:35There is a great fortune in selling a woman a separate bottle for every task in her house,
10:40and none at all in teaching her that vinegar dissolves the scale and cuts the grease and
10:45lifts the odors and softens the wash, all of it for a few cents.
10:50So the old plain knowing of what vinegar does, which every grandmother had by heart and reached
10:56for a dozen times a day, just stopped being handed down, because no one profits by your
11:02keeping one cheap jug instead of a cupboard of bottles.
11:06My grandmother ran half her house on vinegar, and was never at the mercy of any store, and
11:12somewhere between her day and ours, we were taught that every little job wants its own
11:17special bottle.
11:18The mending of it is a jug of plain vinegar, and the knowing of what it does.
11:24You dissolve the scale and rust from your toilet tank and bowl and your tub with it, sat against
11:30the stain to soak and wiped away.
11:32You clean your windows and cut your grease and freshen your drains with it.
11:36You set a bowl of it out to swallow the bad smells.
11:39You lift your sweat stains and soften your wash with it.
11:43And you rinse your hair to a shine with it.
11:45And you run half your house on one cheap jug and empty out that cupboard of bottles.
11:50And you are never again at the mercy of the store shelf.
11:54That is how it comes home, one dissolved stain, one freshened room at a time, the keeping of
12:01your own house back in your own hands.
12:03So here is what I would ask of you.
12:06This week, take that scaled and stained toilet tank you have never once cleaned, or your dull
12:12tub, and put the vinegar to it the way I showed you, sat against the scale to dissolve it,
12:17and then come back and tell me in the comments how it came up, and what other job you found
12:22your vinegar could do.
12:23For I do love to hear of a cupboard of bottles put out of work by one cheap jug.
12:28And tell me too, while you are there, your county and the age of your house.
12:33For the hard water that builds all this scale runs so much worse in some parts than others.
12:38And the old houses have the old fixtures where it crusts the heaviest.
12:43And I learn from every one of you how it goes where you live.
12:46And if your own mother or grandmother had a use for vinegar I have not named here, tell
12:52me that most of all.
12:53For that is how this goes.
12:55We share what we were given.
12:57I read every comment.
12:59And I learn from you the way the old women learn from one another across the fence line,
13:04one house and one season at a time.
13:07Next time I will show you the same many uses of that other humble hero of the pantry, plain
13:14baking soda.
13:15And how between the two of them, the vinegar and the soda, each doing what it does best,
13:20you can clean and freshen near your whole house and never buy a special cleaner again.
13:27There is a right and an old way to keep a home that runs on a couple of cheap, plain
13:32things
13:33and the knowing of what each one does.
13:36But this week you start with the one jug of vinegar.
13:39You dissolve the scale from your toilet tank and your tub.
13:42You clean your glass and cut your grease and swallow your odors.
13:46You lift your sweat stains and rinse your hair to a shine.
13:50And you keep it always well away from any bleach.
13:53And you will understand, as my grandmother did with the vinegar jug always at her hand,
13:58that the humblest thing in the house is often the most useful.
14:02That a mild acid dissolves the very scale and rust and grime that defeats the costly bottles.
14:09And that a woman who knows her vinegar keeps half her house for pennies and is beholden
14:15to no store.
14:15The household kept the plain old way is the one that remembers how the old women ran a
14:21whole clean, sweet home on a jug of vinegar and a box of soda and the knowing of what
14:27each could do.
14:28And that is a thing we are only just starting to remember.
14:31And that is a thing we are also starting to remember.
14:31And that is a thing we have not been writing on.
