00:00There comes a day, usually with the change of a season, when you look around your house
00:04with clear eyes and see all the small grime that has crept up on you unawares.
00:10The white scale crusting the faucet, the dull film on the shower glass, the greasy dust
00:17on top of the cupboards, the stains on the carpet you have stopped seeing, the gray blades
00:22of the fan.
00:23It has all come on so slow you stop noticing, and now it wants doing all at once.
00:30Well, I am going to give you a whole house full of the old plain ways to set it all
00:35right,
00:36room by room, and near every one of them wants nothing but the cheap things you already keep,
00:42the vinegar and the salt and the baking soda and a lemon.
00:47No cupboard of costly bottles.
00:49Let me take you through the house.
00:51Here is the thing to understand before we begin.
00:55The plain principle under near all of it.
00:58For once you see it, you will not need me to name every surface.
01:02Most of the grime in a house is one of three things.
01:05It is hard water scale, the white crust that mineral water leaves behind, and that wants
01:11an acid to dissolve it, which is your vinegar or your lemon.
01:14Or it is grease and grime, and that wants soap and a bit of alkali to cut it, which is
01:21your baking soda.
01:22Or it is dust, which wants only catching in something that holds it rather than pushing it about.
01:29Acid for the scale, soap and soda for the grease, a cloth that grabs for the dust.
01:34Know which of the three you are looking at, and you will always know what to reach for.
01:39Now, room by room.
01:42Quick word before we go further.
01:44My name is Esther Yoder, and the old household ways handed down to me, the kind I am sharing
01:50today, and a great many more besides, are far more than I could ever fit into one video.
01:56I have gathered the whole of them into a book, and you will find it at EliasYoder.com.
02:01If today's tips serve you, that is where the rest of what my mother and grandmother taught
02:07me lives, all in the one place.
02:09Now, to the cleaning.
02:11My grandmother kept a house so clean you could have eaten off any floor in it, and she did
02:16it with a handful of plain things and a great deal of knowing, not with a shelf of bottles.
02:22She used to say that dirt has a nature, and once you understand the nature of a thing,
02:27you can undo it, and that the woman who knows what vinegar does and what soda does can clean
02:33anything in her house, while the woman who only knows which bottle to buy is helpless
02:38the day the store is shut.
02:40So these are her ways, and we begin where the scale and the damp gather worst, which is
02:46the bathroom.
02:47Start with the faucets and the fixtures, where the hard water leaves that crusty white scale
02:53that no amount of wiping will shift, for wiping is the wrong tool.
02:57Scale is mineral and wants an acid to dissolve it.
03:01So here is the old trick, and it works a treat.
03:04Take some paper towels or a rag, soak them in plain white vinegar, and wrap them right
03:10round the faucet and the handles, packed against all the scaled places, and leave them to sit
03:16an hour or more.
03:17The vinegar sits against the scale and dissolves it, and when you take the wrapping off and
03:22wipe, that crust that would not budge wipes right away, and the fixture shines.
03:28Do the same for the shower head, which clogs with scale till the water sprays every which
03:33way.
03:34Take it off if it comes off easily, and soak it in a bowl of vinegar an hour or two.
03:39Or, if it does not come off, fill a plastic bag with vinegar and tie it up over the head
03:44so it soaks in place, and the scale dissolves and the spray runs true again.
03:49And the shower glass, with that cloudy film the hard water leaves, is the same trouble
03:55and the same cure.
03:56Wet it with vinegar, let it sit a few minutes, and scrub and rinse, and the cloud clears.
04:02For the mildew that gathers in the damp corners and the grout, a spray of vinegar left to sit,
04:08or a paste of baking soda scrubbed in, will lift it.
04:12And I gave you the whole of the mold and mildew way in another video if it is bad.
04:18Now here is a rule of safety I must set down plainly right here, before we go a step further.
04:24And it is the most important thing I will say today.
04:26Many folks reach for bleach in the bathroom, and bleach has its place.
04:31But you must never, ever mix bleach with vinegar, nor with any acid,
04:37nor use one right after the other on the same spot.
04:40For the two together make a poison gas that has truly harmed people.
04:45So choose one or the other for a job, and do not cross them.
04:48If you use vinegar, as I mostly do, keep the bleach clear away.
04:53And whichever you use, open the window and let the air move.
04:57I will not have anyone hurt over a clean bathroom.
05:01For the rust stains, the orange marks that hard water leaves in a sink or round the drain,
05:07here is my grandmother's own way, and it is a pretty one.
05:10Cut a lemon in half, dip the cut face in plain salt, and scrub the rust with it.
05:16The acid of the lemon dissolves the rust, and the salt gives the grit to scour it.
05:21And the two together lift those orange stains beautifully, and leave the place smelling sweet besides.
05:27And for the stainless sink gone dull, a scouring powder made with oxalic acid,
05:33which I have shown you before, or your own scouring paste, brings the shine right back.
05:38Scrub it with the grain of the steel, rinse, and buff it dry.
05:42For the drying is what leaves it gleaming with no spots.
05:45Now to the kitchen, and the first trouble there is the inside of a greasy oven or microwave.
05:51And here is a way to loosen it with no scrubbing and no harsh fumes.
05:56Take a bowl of water with a good splash of vinegar in it, set it inside,
06:01and heat it till it steams up the whole inside, a few minutes in a microwave,
06:05or a pan of it set in a warm oven.
06:08That steam softens all the baked on grease, so that it wipes away in one easy swipe,
06:14where before you would have scrubbed an hour.
06:17Steam does the work, you only wipe.
06:20For the greasy dust that builds up on top of the cupboards and the range hood,
06:24that sticky grey film that gathers wherever you cook,
06:28plain warm water with a good squirt of dish soap and a little vinegar cuts it,
06:32for it is grease and wants the soap.
06:35Wipe it off with a soapy cloth, and to keep it from building again so fast,
06:40some folks lay a sheet of paper up on top of the high cupboards where no one sees,
06:44and when it grimes up they just lift it off and lay a fresh one,
06:48and never scrub up there at all.
06:50And for the stove top and the burnt on spills,
06:53a paste of baking soda left to sit and soften, then scrubbed,
06:58lifts what soap alone will not, the same as I have shown you for the pans.
07:03Now the living places, and here it is mostly dust and odors, and both come cheap.
07:08For the couch or the mattress gone a bit stale,
07:11sprinkle plain baking soda over the fabric, all over,
07:15and leave it sit a good while, an hour or more,
07:18for the soda draws up the odor and does not merely cover it,
07:22and then vacuum or brush it all off, and the thing smells fresh again.
07:26Do the same for a smelly rug or carpet before you clean it.
07:30For the dust, the trick is always to catch it in something that holds it,
07:34rather than to sweep it into the air where it only resettles.
07:37A slightly damp cloth grabs dust where a dry one scatters it.
07:42For your fan blades, which gather a thick gray fur that flings all over the room
07:46the moment you turn it on, here is a clever old way.
07:50Take an old pillowcase and slip it right over each blade one at a time,
07:54and pull it back off, and the dust comes away inside the pillowcase
07:58instead of raining down over everything.
08:00Then you shake the pillowcase out of doors and wash it.
08:04And for a screen, a television or the like, a plain dry coffee filter wipes the dust off
08:10without scratching and without leaving lint behind.
08:13And it does not draw the dust straight back the way a rag can.
08:17For the blinds, close them one way and wipe with a damp cloth.
08:21Then close them the other way and wipe again.
08:24And a cloth wrapped over each hand does two slats at once.
08:28For the windows, you need no special blue bottle at all.
08:31A good splash of vinegar in water, wiped on and then wiped off with a lint-free rag
08:37or a bit of crumpled newspaper, leaves the glass clear and streak-free,
08:41and does the sills while you are there.
08:44Vinegar and a rag will do every window in your house for pennies.
08:48Now the floors and the carpets.
08:50For a carpet stain, do not scrub at it hard.
08:52For hard scrubbing, frays the carpet and drives the stain deeper.
08:56Instead, sprinkle a little baking soda on the stain,
08:59then spray or dab white vinegar over it so it foams up,
09:03and let that sit and work a while,
09:05and then blot it, pressing a clean cloth down to lift the loosened stain up into the cloth
09:10rather than rubbing it about.
09:12Blotting lifts, rubbing spreads.
09:15Repeat if it wants it, and most stains come up without harm to the carpet.
09:19And here is a thing about the vacuum that folks never think of.
09:23Clean the vacuum before you vacuum, not after.
09:26For a vacuum with a full bin and a clogged filter,
09:29and a brush wound round with hair cannot pick up much of anything.
09:34You push it about and it does half the work.
09:36So empty it, wipe it out, and clear the brush roller.
09:40And for that tangle of hair wound tight round the brush that you cannot pull loose,
09:44take a seam ripper or a small blade and run it along the brush to cut the hair,
09:49and it lifts right off.
09:50A clean vacuum cleans.
09:52A clogged one only pretends to.
09:54And a word on the tile grout, which grays and darkens over time.
09:58A paste of baking soda and a little water, or of baking soda and vinegar,
10:03scrubbed into the grout lines with an old toothbrush and left to sit a few minutes,
10:08then scrubbed and rinsed, brightens the grout a great deal.
10:11Some folks use a bleach for badly darkened grout and it does whiten it,
10:15but I remind you again, if you do, keep it well away from any vinegar,
10:19and never the two together.
10:21And the last, for those of you troubled by mold on a basement or a cellar wall,
10:26a diluted detergent, or the vinegar and tea tree I have shown you,
10:30scrubbed on will clean a patch of it.
10:32But I will be honest with you the same as I always am.
10:35A small patch is a cleaning job, but a great spread of mold,
10:39or mold that keeps coming back no matter how you clean,
10:42means water is getting into that wall from somewhere,
10:45and no scrubbing will fix that.
10:47You must find and mend the damp, the leak or the wet ground,
10:51or it will come straight back.
10:53Mend it at the right end.
10:54Now think a moment about why your cupboard under the sink
10:57is full of a dozen different bottles,
10:59one for the glass and one for the tile and one for the tub,
11:03when four cheap things do the whole house.
11:06It is worse than a plot, for no one had to arrange it.
11:09There is a great fortune in selling a woman a special bottle
11:13for every surface in her home, bought again and again,
11:16and none at all in teaching her that vinegar dissolves the scale,
11:20soda cuts the grease, salt scours, and a lemon does both.
11:24So the shelves filled with bottles,
11:26and the plain old knowing of the nature of dirt,
11:29which every grandmother had,
11:31just stopped being handed down,
11:33because no one profits by the telling.
11:35My grandmother cleaned a whole spotless house
11:37from vinegar, soda, salt, and soap,
11:40and somewhere between her day and ours,
11:42we were taught that every surface wants its own costly bottle.
11:46The mending of it is four cheap things,
11:49and the knowing of what each does.
11:51Vinegar for the scale on your faucets and glass and windows,
11:55soda for the grease and the odors and the grout,
11:58salt and a lemon for the rust,
12:00soap for the grime,
12:02and a damp cloth and a pillowcase for the dust,
12:04and you clean your whole house top to bottom,
12:07brighter than it has been in years for a few pennies,
12:10and you empty out that cupboard of bottles you no longer need.
12:14That is how it comes home,
12:15one wiped faucet, one freshened room at a time,
12:19the keeping of your own house back in your own hands.
12:22So here is what I would ask of you.
12:24This week, take just one room,
12:26the bathroom most likely,
12:27and do it the old way,
12:29the vinegar on the faucets and the lemon on the rust.
12:32And then come back and tell me in the comments how it came up,
12:35and how many bottles you found you could do without.
12:38For I do love to hear a cupboard get emptier.
12:41And tell me, too, while you are there,
12:44your county and the age of your house.
12:46For the old houses have the hard water
12:48and the real grime in the old fixtures,
12:51where these ways earn their keep the most.
12:54And I learn from every one of you how it goes where you live.
12:58And if your own mother or grandmother had a cleaning way I have not named here,
13:03tell me that most of all.
13:05For that is how this goes.
13:06We share what we were given.
13:08I read every comment,
13:10and I learn from you the way the old women learned from one another across the fence line,
13:15one house and one season at a time.
13:18Next time, I will show you how to mix and keep your own cleaners made up from these few plain
13:24things,
13:24the scouring paste and the spray and the soft soap,
13:28so that you need buy almost nothing from that cleaning aisle ever again,
13:32and your whole house runs on a handful of cheap things off your own shelf.
13:38There is a right and an old way to keep a home that runs on vinegar and soda and salt
13:44and a little knowing.
13:45But this week, you start with the one room.
13:48You wrap the vinegar on your faucets and soak your shower head.
13:52You scrub the rust with a salted lemon.
13:55You cut the grease with soda and soap.
13:57You catch the dust in a damp cloth and a pillowcase.
14:01And you keep the bleach and the vinegar always well apart.
14:05And you will understand, as my grandmother did in her own spotless house,
14:10that dirt has a nature.
14:12And that once you know the nature of a thing, you can undo it.
14:16And that you never needed a shelf of bottles at all.
14:19Only the few plain things and the knowing of what each one does.
14:24The house kept the plain old way is the one that remembers how the old women kept a whole home
14:31gleaming
14:31with vinegar, soda, salt and soap.
14:35And that is a thing we are only just starting to remember.
14:39So get one of the people who are in the hospital .
14:39This is going to be a big-spotip or another day.
14:39And you always have a good idea.
14:39To take one of your kids and have a lot more of these things.
14:39And for the day, you're gonna be successful.
14:39You found a small litter,
