00:00There is a part of your toilet you have very likely never once cleaned in all the years
00:05you have owned it.
00:07And it sits there, quietly, making a swampy mess of itself out of your sight, and then
00:14quietly making your bowl dirty again a day after you have scrubbed it.
00:18I mean the tank, the covered box behind the seat where the water waits between flushes.
00:24Lift that lid and look inside sometime, and you may be startled, for in the dark and the
00:30damp in there, the mildew creeps and the mineral scale builds, and in the humid bathroom the
00:37mold can grow, a hidden foulness you flush down into your clean bowl every single time.
00:44So today I am going to show you how one plain cheap bottle from the medicine shelf, hydrogen
00:50peroxide, cleans out that hidden tank, and freshens your whole toilet, the bowl, and the
00:57seat, and the handle, and even the brush, gentler and safer than bleach, and for pennies.
01:03Let me show you.
01:05Here is the thing to understand first, for it explains why cleaning the tank matters so,
01:10and why so many folks scrub the bowl and it never stays clean.
01:15Your bowl does not fill from the tap fresh each time.
01:19It fills from the tank, from that water that has been sitting in the dark box behind it.
01:25So if the tank is foul, if mildew and scale and the slimy buildup are living in there,
01:31then every flush washes that foulness down into your just-cleaned bowl, and you are forever
01:37scrubbing the bowl while the true trouble sits untouched behind it.
01:41Clean the tank, and you clean the source.
01:45Your bowl then stays fresh far longer, because the water filling it comes from a clean place.
01:51That is the whole idea, and it is why the tank, the part no one thinks of, is where you
01:57ought
01:57to begin.
01:58And hydrogen peroxide is a fine thing to begin with, for it is a genuine cleaner and disinfectant.
02:05It truly does knock back the mildew and the germs.
02:08And yet it is gentle, with no harsh choking fumes and nothing that harms your tank's workings.
02:16Now let me give you the way of it.
02:18Quick word before we go further.

02:47Now, to the toilet.
02:49My grandmother had a saying that fits this exactly, that the dirt you cannot see is the
02:54dirt that beats you, for you scrub only what is before your eyes, and the real trouble hides
03:00where you never look.
03:01She meant that a house is truly kept not by scrubbing the visible spots over and over,
03:07but by getting into the hidden places, the underneaths and the insides and the backs of things, where
03:13the trouble breeds unseen.
03:16And a toilet tank is the very picture of it, foulness hidden in a box, ruining your clean
03:22work from behind.
03:23So here is how you get at it, and at the whole toilet besides, the peroxide way.
03:28Let us begin with that hidden tank.
03:31It is the simplest thing in the world.
03:33You lift the lid off the tank and set it gently aside, and you pour in about a cup of
03:38the
03:38plain hydrogen peroxide, the ordinary 3% kind from the medicine shelf, right into the water
03:44in the tank.
03:45And then you leave it, half an hour to an hour, while the peroxide goes to work on the mildew
03:51and the buildup and the germs living in there, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the
03:56tank.
03:57Then you flush, and that peroxide-cleaned water washes through and out, taking the loose
04:02and funk with it and rinsing the works.
04:05Set the lid back, and you have cleaned the part of your toilet you never once cleaned
04:10before, and your flushes will run cleaner for it.
04:13And if the tank is very neglected and scaled, you may lift the lid, and with the water down,
04:19wipe and scrub the inside surfaces where the buildup clings.
04:23But for the general cleaning, the cup of peroxide left to sit and flush through does a wonderful
04:31job with no scrubbing at all.
04:35Now the bowl itself.
04:37Pour about a half cup of the peroxide straight into the bowl, and let it sit 20 or 30 minutes
04:43to clean and freshen and disinfect.
04:46And then give it a scrub with your brush and flush.
04:50The bowl comes up fresher and cleaner and sweeter smelling, and the peroxide has knocked back
04:57the germs without the stinging fumes of the harsh cleaners.
05:00It is a gentle, honest clean.
05:05Now here is the rule of safety I must set down before we go one step further.
05:10And on a toilet video, it matters more than any tip, so heat it above all.
05:17Never ever mix hydrogen peroxide with bleach.
05:21And never mix bleach with vinegar.
05:23And do not use these things one ride after another on the same spot, without a thorough
05:30rinsing and airing between.
05:33For bleach crossed with peroxide, or bleach crossed with an acid like vinegar, makes dangerous
05:40gases that have truly harmed folk.
05:43Many a person cleans a toilet with bleach.
05:46If you do, you must keep it well away from your peroxide and your vinegar, and never let
05:52them meet in the bowl or the tank.
05:55The good news is, you have no need of the bleach at all, for the peroxide does the job gentler
06:02and safer.
06:03But if bleach is in your house, keep it apart from these, always.
06:09That is the one rule I will not have you forget.
06:14Now about that dreaded brown-yellow ring, the stubborn stain around the waterline of an older
06:20toilet that laughs at your regular cleaner.
06:23Here I must be honest with you about what that ring is, for the truth tells you how to
06:29beat it.
06:31That ring is not mainly dirt nor germs.
06:34It is mineral, hard water scale and rust, built up and stained into the porcelain over years.
06:42And that matters, for the peroxide, good as it is at the mildew and the germs, does not dissolve
06:49mineral scale, no more than it dissolves stone.
06:54So for that ring, you want the things that truly take on mineral.
06:59The first is an acid, and here your plain vinegar is the friend.
07:04For an acid dissolves the scale, as I have shown you.
07:08Soak the ring with vinegar to loosen the mineral crust.
07:12You may also use the peroxide with a little baking soda made into a paste on the stain, which
07:19foams and helps lift the discoloration, and freshens as it works.
07:24And that does help the look of it.
07:27But for a ring truly built up hard, the surest tool is the gentle scour of a pumice stone,
07:34that light volcanic stone, rubbed on the ring in easy circles.
07:40Now heed this with the pumice.
07:42Keep it wet, always, soaking wet, and the porcelain wet too, and rub gently.
07:50For a wet pumice on wet porcelain grinds away the mineral ring without scratching.
07:56But a dry pumice will scratch and scar the glaze.
08:00So wet, wet, wet, and gentle.
08:04Between the vinegar to dissolve it and the wet pumice to gently grind it, that old ring that
08:11beat your cleaner for years comes away at last.
08:16So, peroxide for the germs and the mildew and the freshening.
08:20But vinegar or a wet pumice for the mineral ring.
08:24Right tool for each trouble.
08:27Now let us clean the parts you touch.
08:30For here is a thing worth thinking on.
08:33The water in the bowl may be clean.
08:36But the seat and the lid, and most of all the handle, are touched by every hand that uses
08:42that room.
08:43And they are where the germs pass from one person to the next, which matters greatly when
08:49someone in the house has been poorly.
08:52So here the peroxide truly shines.
08:55For it disinfects and it is safe and gentle on the skin, and leaves no sticky residue nor choking smell.
09:04Pour some peroxide into a spray bottle, and mist it lightly over the seat, the lid, the handle,
09:11and the flush lever.
09:13Let it sit a minute or two to do its work.
09:16And wipe it down with a cloth or a bit of paper.
09:21Fresh, disinfected, no residue, no fumes.
09:25Do the handle especially, and do it often when there is sickness in the house.
09:29For a clean handle stops a bug going round the whole family.
09:35And here is one most folks never think of at all.
09:38The toilet brush itself.
09:41That brush does all the dirty work, and then we stand it back wet in its holder,
09:46foul, breeding its own smell in the corner.
09:50So freshen it.
09:51Fill a small pail, or the holder, with equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water.
09:57And stand the brush down in it to soak a good half hour.
10:02And the peroxide cleans and disinfects and deodorizes the bristles.
10:07So your brush is fresh for its next use, instead of a little swamp in the corner.
10:13A clean tool for a clean job.
10:17Now, one more use.
10:19For a toilet that has begun to drain a bit slow.
10:23Swirling sluggish before it clears.
10:25Which often means a bit of organic build up starting in the pipe.
10:30Not yet a true clog.
10:32You can mix a cup of peroxide with a spoonful of baking soda.
10:37And pour it down into the bowl and drain.
10:39And follow it with a pot of hot water.
10:43Hot, but not a hard rolling boil.
10:46And it foams a little as it goes.
10:48And helps break up and loosen that early build up.
10:52But here is the honest word I always give, so you are not misled.
10:58This is for a minor slowdown or for prevention.
11:02Not for a true blockage.
11:04If your toilet is truly clogged and will not drain, this will not clear it.
11:10That wants the plunger or the closet auger.
11:14That toilet snake I have shown you.
11:16Or for a bad one, a plumber.
11:19So use the peroxide and soda for keeping the drain running free.
11:23And for a little sluggishness.
11:25And reach for the plunger or the snake for a real clog.
11:30Know which trouble you have and use the right tool.
11:34Now think a moment about why we came to keep a shelf of harsh, costly, choking bathroom cleaners.
11:41A different stinging bottle for the bowl and the tank and the surfaces.
11:46When one cheap little brown bottle of peroxide cleans and disinfects the lot of it.
11:52Gentler and safer.
11:54And a jug of vinegar handles the scale.
11:57It is worse than a plot.
11:59For no one had to arrange it.
12:02There is a great fortune in selling a woman a whole cabinet of specialized bathroom sprays.
12:08Each harsh and dear.
12:10And none at all in teaching her that plain peroxide and plain vinegar clean her whole toilet top to bottom
12:17for pennies.
12:19And with never a choking fume.
12:21So the plain knowing that the cheap gentle things clean as well as the harsh dear ones and safer.
12:29Just stopped being handed down.
12:31Because no one profits by your emptying that cabinet.
12:35My grandmother kept a whole house clean and sweet with a handful of plain cheap things.
12:41And somewhere between her day and ours we were taught that a clean bathroom wants a shelf of harsh bottles
12:48and a stinging cloud in the air.
12:51The mending of it is a bottle of peroxide, a jug of vinegar and the knowing of what each does.
12:58You clean the hidden tank with a cup of peroxide left to sit and flushed through.
13:04So your bowl fills from a clean place and stays fresh.
13:08You freshen and disinfect the bowl and the seat and the handle and the brush with peroxide, gentle and safe.
13:16You dissolve the old mineral ring with vinegar or gently grind it with a wet pumice.
13:22You keep the drain running free with peroxide and soda and hot water and reach for the plunger for a
13:29true clog.
13:30And you keep your bleach, if you have any, well away from all of it.
13:35And your whole toilet is clean and fresh and disinfected, top to bottom and behind, for a dollar or two
13:42and never a harsh fume.
13:45That is how it comes home.
13:47One cleaned tank, one freshened bowl at a time.
13:50The keeping of your own house back in your own hands.
13:54So here is what I would ask of you.
13:57This week, do the one thing you have never done.
14:01Lift the lid off your toilet tank.
14:04Look at what is hiding in there and pour in your cup of peroxide and let it sit and flush
14:10it through.
14:11And then come back and tell me in the comments what state your tank was in and how much fresher
14:17your bowl stayed after.
14:18For I do love to hear of a hidden trouble found and beaten.
14:22And tell me too, while you are there, your county and the age of your house, for the old houses
14:28have the old tanks and the hard water where the scale and the mildew build the worst.

15:19There is a right and an old way to keep a whole home clean and sweet on a few plain
15:25cheap things, each doing what it does best.
15:27But this week you start with the tank, you lift that lid you have never lifted, you pour in your
15:34peroxide and let it sit and flush it clean, you freshen your bowl and your seat and your handle and
15:41your brush with it, you take the old ring off with vinegar or a wet pumice and you keep it
15:47all well clear of any bleach.
15:49And you will understand, as my grandmother did, that the dirt you cannot see is the dirt that beats you,
15:56that the hidden tank foul behind the bowl was fouling your clean work all along, and that one cheap gentle
16:04bottle cleans and freshens and disinfects your whole toilet where a cabinet of harsh sprays never kept it clean at
16:12all.
16:12The household kept the plain old way is the one that remembers how the old women kept every corner, seen
16:21and hidden, clean and sweet, with a few plain cheap things and the knowing of what each could do.
16:28And that is a thing we are only just starting to remember.
