00:00There is a bottle of dark soda pop in many a kitchen, the sweet fizzy stuff the children beg
00:06for, and most folks never think of it as anything but a treat. But I am going to show you
00:12today
00:12that a cup of that same dark soda mixed with a few other plain things you already have
00:18makes one of the finest scouring cleaners there is for a burnt pan or a stained bathroom,
00:24and it costs you almost nothing. And if you stay with me to the end, I will give you a
00:30second
00:30recipe besides. A little spray for knocking down the flies that plague a kitchen in the warm months.
00:36Two useful things from what is already in your cupboard. Let me show you the whole of it.
00:42Here is the thing to understand about why the cleaning mixture works, for it is worth knowing
00:48rather than just following. A burnt, greasy, stained pan has more than one kind of dirt
00:54on it at once, and this mixture answers each. There is the grease, and the dish soap cuts
01:00that. There is the burnt on and the stuck on, and the salt gives a gentle grit to scour that
01:06loose. There is the dulling film and the sour smell, and the baking soda scours and freshens
01:12that. And that dark soda pop, which surprises folks, is mildly acid, and that mild acid helps
01:19loosen scale and lift a stain and cut through grime. So you have grease cutter, scouring
01:26grit, freshener, and a mild acid all in the one jar, each doing its part, and that is why
01:32it works on so many things at once. Now let me give you the making of it. Quick word before
01:38we go further. My name is Esther Yoder, and the old household ways handed down to me, the
01:44kind I am sharing today, and a great many more besides, are far more than I could ever fit
01:49into one video. I have gathered the whole of them into a book, and you will find it at
01:55EliasYoder.com. If today's tips serve you, that is where the rest of what my mother and
02:01grandmother taught me lives, all in the one place. Now, to the mixing. My grandmother would
02:07have laughed to see soda pop put to work as a cleaner, for in her day, it was a rare
02:12treat
02:12and never wasted on a pan. But she would have understood the sense of it at once, for she
02:17knew that a mild acid loosens grime and scale, and she used her vinegar just so. She always
02:24said that there is more than one way to skin a cat, and that a clever woman uses whatever
02:28is at hand for what it can do. So if you have a bottle of that dark soda going flat
02:34in the
02:34ice box, or the children left one half drunk, here is a fine use for it rather than pouring
02:39it down the drain, and here is how it is mixed. You will want a cup of plain liquid dish
02:45soap,
02:45and a cup of the dark cola, the ordinary dark soda pop. Pour those two into a bowl together
02:51and mix them well. Then add half a cup of water to thin it so it spreads and pours nicely
02:57rather than sitting thick. And then your two dry things, a tablespoon of plain table salt,
03:03which is your scouring grit, and a tablespoon of baking soda, which adds more scour and the
03:09freshening. Stir the salt and soda in well, working them all the way through until they
03:14are not sitting in a heap at the bottom, and then pour the whole of it into a spray bottle,
03:19or a squeeze bottle, or a jar, whatever you have. Give it a shake before you use it, for
03:24the salt and soda will settle as it stands, which is only natural. And there is your cleaner,
03:30made for pennies from four plain things. Now let me show you what it does, and the first
03:36and best use is the burnt pots and pans. When you have a pan with food burnt and stuck fast
03:41to the bottom, you put a good amount of this mixture right onto the burnt place, coating
03:46it well. And now you have a choice. If it is not too bad, you can wash it straight off,
03:52scrubbing with your sponge, and it comes away far easier than with soap alone, and the pan
03:58comes up bright. But for a properly burnt pan, do not go at it straight away. Give it
04:03a moment to work. Let the mixture sit on the burnt place and penetrate a while, a good many
04:08minutes, for while it sits, the soap and the acid and the soda are all working down into
04:14the burnt crust, and loosening its grip on the metal. And then, when you scrub, it lifts
04:20away far more easily. And I will be honest with you here, rather than promise you a miracle,
04:25for I always will. A lightly burnt pan may come up bright in short order, but a pan burnt
04:31truly black and hard is not going to shine like new in mere seconds, whatever anyone tells
04:36you. A bad one wants that soaking time, and it may want a second go. So for the worst of
04:42them, put the mixture on with a little hot water in the pan, and let it stand a good half
04:47hour or more. Or even set it over a low heat to simmer gently a few minutes and then cool,
04:52and the warmth drives it right down under the burnt crust, so it lifts away in sheets when
04:57you scrub. Patience and a soak do the work. Do not wear out your arm fighting a pan that
05:02only wants a little time. But give it that time, and this mixture will take the black
05:07off a pan you thought was ruined and bring it up bright. And a plain word of care, the same
05:12I always give with a scouring mix. It has salt in it, and salt is a real if gentle abrasive,
05:18so it is fine on your steel and iron pans, and your porcelain and your tile, but go gently
05:24on the delicate things, on a non-stick coated pan, or a polished or coated finish, using it
05:30light with a soft cloth or leaving it be there, so you never scratch what you meant to clean.
05:35Now this same mixture does your bathroom too, and does it well. You spray or wipe it round
05:41the basin and the tub and the tile, and it cuts the soap scum and the grime, and the
05:45soda freshens as it goes. And for the toilet, you can spray it round the bowl and up along
05:51the edges under the rim, and let it sit and act a minute or two, and then take your brush
05:56to it and flush, and the bowl comes up brighter and fresher. The soap and the salt and the mild
06:01acid of the soda all go at the grime and the light staining together. One jar then, for
06:07your burnt pans and your whole bathroom both, made from four cheap things.
06:11Now here is the second recipe I promised you, the little gift, a spray for the flies. In
06:17the warm months when the flies come into the kitchen and pester you at the table and round
06:21the food, a simple soapy spray is a real help against them, and it is made of near nothing.
06:27You take a container of water, and into it you put a few tablespoons of liquid dish soap,
06:32and a couple of tablespoons of white vinegar, and a few bay leaves whose scent freshens the
06:37mixture and which many an old kitchen kept about for the pantry pests. Mix it well and
06:43pour it into a spray bottle, and there is your fly spray. And here is how you use it,
06:48and I want to be plain about just what it does so you are not disappointed. This is a spray
06:53for the flies and the soft little bugs you can see and aim at. When a fly lands, or the
06:58soft
06:59bugs gather, you spray them directly right on them, and the soap coats them and does them in,
07:04for soap undoes a soft-bodied bug on contact. So it is a fine thing to keep by in fly
07:10season,
07:10a cheap and pleasant smelling spray to knock down the flies that get into the kitchen,
07:15with none of the harsh poison of a store can, and no harm to your floors or your table where
07:20it lands, and safe about the house. Spray the flies you see, wipe up after, and it keeps the
07:26kitchen clearer of them through the warm months. That is what it is good for, and it is genuinely
07:31good for that. Keep it by the window in summer and it earns its place. Now think a moment about
07:36why we buy a special bottle for every one of these jobs. A burnt pan cleaner, a bathroom
07:42spray, a toilet cleaner, a bug spray, each in its own costly bottle from the store, when
07:48a few plain things from the cupboard make the lot. It is worse than a plot, for no one had
07:53to arrange it. There is a great fortune in selling a woman a separate bottle for every task in
07:59her house, bought again and again forever, and none at all in teaching her that dish soap
08:05and salt and soda and a cup of flat soda pop will scour her pans and her bathroom, and a
08:12little soapy water knock down her flies, for a few cents. So the shelves filled up with bottles,
08:18and the old plain knowing of what soap does and salt does and a mild acid does, which every
08:25grandmother had by heart, just stopped being handed down, because no one profits by the
08:31telling. My grandmother kept a whole house clean from a handful of plain things, and somewhere
08:38between her day and ours, we were taught that every little job wants its own bottle off the
08:44store shelf. The mending of it is a bowl and a few cheap things. You mix your cola and your
08:51soap and
08:51your salt and your soda into a jar, and it scours your burnt pans bright and cleans your whole
08:58bathroom. And you mix your soapy vinegar and base spray, and it knocks down the flies in the warm months.
09:05And between the two, you have done the work of four or five store bottles for pennies from what was
09:11already in your cupboard, some of it what you would have poured down the drain. That is how it comes
09:17home, one mixed jar at a time, the keeping of your own house back in your own hands and off
09:25the shelf
09:25of bottles. So here is what I would ask of you. This week, mix up the cleaning jar and take
09:32it to your
09:33worst burnt pan, the one you have been meaning to give up on, and then come back and tell me
09:39in the comments
09:40how it came up. For I do love to hear a thing saved that was near thrown out. And tell
09:46me too, while you
09:47are there, your county and the age of your house. For the old houses have the hard water and the
09:54old
09:54fixtures where a good scouring mix earns its keep the most. And I learn from every one of you how
10:01it goes
10:01where you live. And if your own mother or grandmother had a homemade cleaner or a fly remedy I have

10:17comment and I learn from you the way the old women learned from one another across the fence line, one
10:24kitchen and one season at a time. Next time I will show you the other plain mixtures worth keeping
10:31made up under your sink, the scouring paste and the window spray and the rest so that between them
10:38you need buy almost nothing from that cleaning aisle at all. And the whole house is kept from a handful
10:44of
10:45cheap things off your own shelf. There is a right and an old way to keep a home clean that
10:51runs on soap and
10:52soda and salt and vinegar and a little knowing. But this week you start with the one jar and the
10:59one
10:59spray. You mix your cola and soap and salt and soda for the burnt pans and the bathroom. And you
11:06mix your
11:07soapy spray for the flies. And you watch a few cheap things from your cupboard do the work of a
11:13shelf of
11:14costly bottles. And you will understand, as my grandmother did at her own sink, that a clever woman
11:20uses whatever is at hand for what it can do. That soap cuts and salt scours and a mild acid
11:27loosens. And
11:29that you never needed all those bottles at all. Only the plain things and the knowing of what each one
11:35does. The house kept the plain old way is the one that remembers how the old women cleaned everything
11:42they owned and kept the flies at bay with a handful of cheap things and a little cleverness. And that
11:50is
11:50a thing we are only just starting to remember. And before I let you go, let me give you the
11:55whole of
11:56the cleaning jar once more, plain and clear, so you have it by heart. A cup of dish soap and
12:03a cup of the
12:03dark cola mixed together. Half a cup of water to thin it. A tablespoon of salt and a tablespoon of
12:10baking soda
12:11stirred all the way through. Into a bottle, shaken before each use. Onto your burnt pans, left to sit
12:19and penetrate a while, then scrubbed. With a soak or a gentle simmer for the very worst. And round your
12:26bathroom and your toilet bowl, left to act a minute. Then wiped and brushed and flushed. Gentle on the
12:32non-stick and the polished things. And never ever mixed or used together with bleach. For cleaners and bleach
12:39together make a harmful gas. And there is no reason on earth to cross them. Keep the jar labeled and
12:46up
12:46away from the little children. For it looks like nothing much and is not for them to be into. That
12:52is
12:52the whole of it. Four cheap things doing the work of a shelf of bottles. And the fly spray once
12:58more as
12:58well. Water, a few tablespoons of dish soap, a couple of tablespoons of white vinegar and a few bay leaves
13:05for
13:06the scent. Mixed and bottled. And sprayed right on the flies and soft bugs you see. To knock them down
13:12in the
13:12warm months. Cheap and pleasant and safe about the house. Keep it by the window through the summer.
13:18There now, you have the both of them. The scouring jar and the fly spray. The whole of today's tips
13:24in
13:24your hand. Mix them up this week from what is already in your cupboard. Put them to work on your
13:30burnt pans and
13:30your bathroom and your summer flies. And you will find, as the old women always knew, that the plainest
13:36things in the kitchen, rightly understood and rightly mixed, will do near everything the costly bottles
13:42promise. And do it for pennies. And that is a thing we are only just starting to remember.
