The Victorian Coalition is promising to fast-track new hybrid trains to connect Melbourne’s outer west to the city. This comes years ahead of the government’s timeline to electrify the Melton line and eight years after Labor first made it an election promise. The trains would be capable of running on both diesel and electric power, but there are still questions about how they would fit the rail network.

00:02Full steam ahead to November.
00:05The residents of Melton have been ignored for far too long.
00:08Usually on opposite sides of the track,
00:10the Liberals and Labor are both promising train services will get better.
00:14Sometimes it's 40 minutes, sometimes it's an hour if it's weekend.
00:18Cutting the ribbon on the new Melton station,
00:21the government's plan is not a new story for this marginal seat.
00:25It's definitely frustrating.
00:27If anyone votes Labor, I'm going to absolutely scream.
00:28Daniel Andrews promised to get Melton and Wyndham Vale lines
00:32onto improved metro services with electrified tracks back in 2018.
00:38And in 2022.
00:41But Labor's plan will roll on into the next decade.
00:45The government doesn't have a timeframe set.
00:47It just takes time because things have to be put in place
00:50in order for it to happen as successfully as possible.
00:53The opposition wants to boost capacity in the meantime
00:56by trialling 25 bigger hybrid electric trains for $1.7 billion.
01:04Not promises, not press releases, not excuses from a dying government,
01:09but a plan to do something.
01:11Hopefully within four years, when the next election comes around.
01:16But Labor is sticking to its line.
01:19We're not going off on a bizarre side quest.
01:23Arguing hybrid trains wouldn't work with the City Loop or Metro Tunnel.
01:27Ridiculous.
01:27You could put a steam train in the City Loop if you really wanted to.
01:31Experts say there are serious questions about how it would work.
01:35It's good that they're thinking about what can be improved for Western Melbourne
01:38in terms of public transport.
01:40The government is under pressure in the Western suburbs.
01:43It used to be Labor Party heartland.
01:46But there is a frustration in this growing community
01:49that they've been left behind with poorer services and infrastructure.
01:53It's something the Coalition and One Nation are looking to capitalise on.
