The driest place on Earth is hiding entire ancient cities. One civilization drained 1,400 km of tunnels — and sealed its own doom. Why couldn't they just leave?

00:02It's the desert. That sounds strange, right?
00:05A desert is the most barren place there is.
00:08What could it possibly be hiding? Here's a number to sit with.
00:12All the deserts on earth together cover about one-third of all the land on the planet.
00:15And of that third, almost none of it has ever been dug up.
00:18But every single time someone actually digs down, they don't find dirt.
00:22They find entire cities, layer after layer, buried just beneath the sand.
00:27To understand why those cities are down there, we have to talk about something
00:30that sounds like archaeology but really isn't, fossil water.
00:33Think of it as a bank card that can only be spent, never refilled.
00:36More than 10,000 years ago, the Sahara, the Arabian Peninsula,
00:39and Central Asia were rainy places. Rain soaked into
00:43the ground, building up groundwater layer by layer.
00:46Then earth's orbital cycle slowly shifted. The rain belts retreated south.
00:51The rain stopped. And that bank card froze, full of balance.
00:55You could still withdraw from it, but no new deposits would ever arrive.
00:59Use it once, and it's gone forever.
01:01So here's the question. If you're a person living at the edge of the desert,
01:05and you discover there's a bank card like this buried underground, what do you do?
01:08You find a way to spend it. And the better you get at spending it,
01:12the deeper you sink your roots into that one spot.
01:14That's the core of today's story. Whether a civilization survives never depends on when
01:19the water runs out. It depends on whether it can still walk away when the water is gone.
01:23And the civilization that sinks everything into permanent, fixed infrastructure can't walk away.
01:28Every city buried under the desert stands somewhere on that line.
01:31Let's start at the end that couldn't leave.
01:33Today's Fezzon region in southern Libya.
01:35About 2,000 years ago, it was home to a people called the Garamantes.
01:39They spent that bank card beautifully. They dug horizontal tunnels underground,
01:43straight into the water table, then used gravity to bring the water up to the surface.
01:47This system is called a fog era, and there were no pumps, no machines at all.
01:51Just people, generation after generation, digging by hand, calculating the slope with absolute
01:56precision. Too steep, and the water erodes the tunnel. Too flat, and the water won't flow.
02:02At their peak, the total length of these tunnels beneath the Libyan desert may have reached 1400
02:06kilometers. That's roughly the distance between Beijing and Guangzhou.
02:10With that water came agriculture. With agriculture came cities, fortresses, and thousands of
02:16homes. They controlled the trade routes across the Sahara. Roman writers described them.
02:21Roman armies fought them. A real civilization, it lasted more than a thousand years.
02:26Then the water ran low. Fossil water does not recharge. The more smoothly they extracted it,
02:32the faster the balance drained. And by then, they had sunk everything into those tunnels.
02:37So where do you move? You can move a city. You cannot move 1400 kilometers of underground water.
02:43So they stayed and waited for the last drop. You might think that's just because they drained the
02:47water. What if the water hadn't run out? There's an even harsher example from a study team using
02:52satellite imagery in the desert of Oman. They noticed something strange, several ancient
02:57camel trails, coming from different directions, all converging on a single point. They followed
03:01those trails, dug down, and found a fortified city. Walls. Towers. A major junction on an ancient
03:08caravan route. Some researchers believe this could be the legendary city of Yubar, the one said to have
03:13been destroyed by God. The scholars still argue about the name. But they don't argue about what happened.
03:19Here's what happened. Beneath this city was a huge limestone cavern. For centuries,
03:24the city had been drilling wells. The more they pumped, the lower the water table sank.
03:29The water had been holding up the roof of that cavern. When the water retreated,
03:33nothing held the roof anymore. Somewhere between the 3rd and 5th centuries, the cavern ceiling collapsed.
03:38The towers, the walls, everything came crashing down into that void. Then the sand poured in and buried it.
03:44This city was never burned. It was never conquered. It swallowed itself.
03:49Now let's look at the opposite end. The ones who could leave. On the edge.
03:54Of the Takamakan desert sat a city called Lulon, on the shore of a lake called Lopner,
03:59at a crossroads of the Silk Road. Merchants from China, Persia, India, and Rome all passed through
04:04its markets. Around the 3rd century, the lake began to shrink. Rivers in arid regions often behave this way,
04:10when the ground shifts, they change course and flow somewhere else. No lake. No water. And then the
04:16people of Lulon did something very different from the Garamantes. They left. They accepted it. And the
04:22sand moved in. Several centuries later, Chinese travelers were tracing the Silk Road searched for
04:27Lulon and found nothing. It wasn't until 1900 that a Swedish explorer almost stumbled onto its ruins.
04:33Wooden houses still standing. Documents intact. Silk, grain, everyday tools, everything still lying
04:40where it had been placed more than a thousand years earlier. The people survived. The city died.
04:45By now, you've probably guessed the pattern. Those who could leave, lived. Those who couldn't leave,
04:51died. And you might think climate killed them. The first half of that is right. The second half
04:57needs correcting. Because if it were only a drying climate, that wouldn't be a disaster. That would
05:02just be slow. Orbital cycles work on scales of thousands of years. Your grandfather's wells were fine.
05:08Your father's were smaller. Yours start to run dry. A little tighter each year, until life becomes
05:14impossible. Slow enough that, in theory, there was time to adapt. Time to move. The truly deadly thing
05:21wasn't the climate. It was how well their survival tools worked. If the Garamantes had never dug those
05:26foggers, they wouldn't have lasted a thousand years. But they also wouldn't have pinned their entire
05:31civilization to a card that could only be spent. Because. That water system worked so well, the
05:36population grew and the demand for water kept climbing. Their rate of success was their rate
05:41of overspending. The city in Oman. If their drilling had been slightly worse, they might never have hollowed
05:46out the ground beneath their own feet. These civilizations weren't killed by the desert.
05:51They were slowly locked in place by their own skill at surviving it. And here's the most unsettling part.
05:56We don't even know how many places like this exist. Ground penetrating radar can see through dry sand,
06:01down several meters. As long as the sand is dry and the material underneath is dense enough,
06:06stone walls, burned brick, paved roads, the radar sends back a signal that's different from the
06:10surrounding sand. In the deserts of Saudi Arabia, researchers using this method have identified
06:155,000s of stone structures, including rectangular platforms. Areas so vast. So remote, so difficult
06:21to reach that no one has ever systematically walked them. Most have never been dug. We don't even know
06:27what they were for. We only know they're there because a satellite told us. Which brings us back
06:32to that word, vault. Why can the desert act as a vault? Because it's dry. Wood doesn't rot. Documents
06:38don't decay. The same aridity that killed these civilizations is what preserved them, perfectly,
06:43inside the sand. And because it's dry, radar can penetrate and see. The desert covers a third of
06:49the land. Of that third, only a tiny fraction has been excavated. Only a sliver has even been scanned
06:55and truly analyzed by satellites. And that tiny sliver has already produced more leads than
06:59archaeologists can keep up with. So this vault, we've only just cracked the door open a few centimeters.
07:05One last thing. That bank card. That can only be spent isn't just a Garamantes problem.
07:11Today, agriculture and cities in many parts of the world depend on pumping groundwater that fell tens
07:15of thousands of years ago. Water that will never be replenished. Those ancient people didn't make a
07:20stupid mistake. They just did one very useful thing for far too long. And as for us? We probably still
07:27have a little while left.
