Russia is drilling 8 kilometers down to find oil that never runs out. Is it a scientific breakthrough — or an 8-km hole paid for by a bet?

00:26In the early 1990s, he was Vladimir Putin's academic supervisor,
00:30helping Putin finish his thesis.
00:32Later, he ran Putin's election campaign in St. Petersburg.
00:35A man holding academic resources, industrial capital, and top-level political connections
00:40all at once decided to bet on an idea the mainstream has rejected for half a century.
00:44So what exactly is he betting on?
00:46His claim is that oil may not come from ancient life at all.
00:50The mainstream theory says oil forms from the remains of ancient organisms,
00:53buried in sediment, cooked by heat and pressure over millions of years.
00:57Litvinenko backs a different idea, the abiotic oil theory.

01:04generated from inorganic material under extreme pressure,
01:06then rise up through faults and fractures.

01:16So can the earth actually manufacture hydrocarbons on its own?
01:20Let's break this down carefully.
01:21In the lab, simulating the extreme heat and pressure of the mantle can produce
01:25small amounts of methane and other light hydrocarbons.
01:28And in nature, some seabed methane appears to have an inorganic origin.
01:32So yes, hydrocarbons can probably form under non-biological conditions.
01:36But here's where the leap happens.
01:39There's a huge distance between, possible in a lab, and Litvinenko's bold claim.
01:43Producing trace amounts of methane in a lab says nothing about huge oil fields underground.
01:48Finding a little inorganic methane doesn't mean it can form a commercially mineable oil field.
01:52And finding oil at depth doesn't prove it's abiotic,
01:55because organic oil can also form and migrate over long distances into reservoir rock.
02:00Even if oil is genuinely being created down there, the rate is staggeringly slow,
02:04measured in millions of years.
02:05For human purposes, that's effectively the same as using it up.
02:09So why hasn't anyone found a large abiotic oil field in decades of searching?
02:13Litvinenko blames academic dogmatism.
02:16He compares the marginalization of abiotic theory to the Soviet persecution of genetics,
02:20and calls advocates of renewable energy, eco-terrorists.
02:23In 2023, he claims some oil fields that, should have run dry,
02:27are still producing because the reservoir keeps getting refilled.
02:30But in reality, an oil field producing more than expected has many boring explanations.
02:35New reservoir units get discovered, field boundaries get expanded,
02:39recovery rates improve, or the initial estimate was simply too conservative.
02:43Jumping straight to, the earth is pumping in new oil, skips too many steps.
02:47So what outcome would actually count as a win for this 8-kilometer well?
02:51According to public records, the mining university has obtained a license to do exploration work in
02:55the Komi Republic, west of the Ural Mountains, itself an oil region.
02:59But weather drilling has actually started is still unconfirmed.
03:02If the well really goes 8 kilometers down, it has to clear 4 hurdles before it counts as a first
03:07step.
03:08First, are there actually hydrocarbons at that depth?
03:11Second, do the carbon isotopes and biomarkers show they formed abiotically,
03:14rather than migrating from deeper organic sources?
03:17Third, is the reservoir refilling on an observable human timescale?
03:21And fourth, is that refill rate fast enough to be economically worth exploiting?
03:25Only if every answer is yes can Litvinenko's core idea be supported.
03:29Otherwise, this well is just a very deep hole.
03:32So is this a rewriting of history, or a giant gamble dressed up in politics?
03:36The answer is still buried deep underground.
03:39But one thing is already clear.
03:41Even if they find hydrocarbons at 8 kilometers, that's only the first step of a very long verification process.
03:47From finding oil, to proving the earth makes it on its own, to Russia becoming a world energy superpower,
03:52there are still huge unsolved problems waiting.
03:55A single well can open a window.
03:57But it can't hold up a whole mountain.
03:59And if nothing is found in the end, Litvinenko can always find a way to bury that mountain 8 kilometers
