03:59At first glance, that's nothing special, European mapmakers like to sketch a speculative continent at the bottom of the world,
04:05the so-called Terra Australis Incognita.
04:07It was map aesthetics.
04:09Nobody took it seriously.
04:11But the coastline on the Piri Reis map lines up with the eastern edge of what's now Queen Maud land
04:15in Antarctica.
04:16That sounds fine.
04:18Let me rephrase.
04:20It doesn't line up with the Antarctica we see today.
04:23Today, Antarctica is buried under 2 kilometers of ice.
04:26From the surface, you cannot see the original coastline at all.
04:29It lines up with the coastline that exists beneath the ice sheet.

04:34How did we, as humans, even learn what that looks like?
