00:09Most people assume it's the actual seismoscope invented by Zhang Heng, a genius of ancient China.
00:15It is not.
00:16That machine is a reconstruction, built in 1951 by a man named Wang Zhendwa.
00:21Zhang Heng's original vanished 1800 years ago.
00:24And here's where the story gets strange.
00:26The real question isn't who built the fake.
00:29It's why nobody could admit it for 41 years.
00:31Let's start at the beginning.
00:33In the year 132 AD, Zhang Heng was a brilliant astronomer in the Han Dynasty capital of Luoyang.
00:39He built a massive bronze vessel, around which eight dragons faced eight directions.
00:43Each dragon held a metal ball in its mouth.
00:46Beneath, eight bronze toads waited, mouths open.
00:49The principle was elegant.
00:51When an earthquake struck, ground waves traveled outward.
00:54The device sensed the motion and dropped a ball into a specific toad's mouth, revealing the quake's direction.
01:00Here's the part almost everyone gets wrong.
01:02The seismoscope did not predict earthquakes.
01:05It detected them, after they'd happened.
01:07Same logic as a modern earthquake early warning system.
01:11Detection, not prediction.
01:13We know it worked once.
01:14In 134 AD, the machine dropped a ball.
01:17In the capital, nobody felt a thing.
01:20Scholars called it worthless.
01:22Days later, a messenger arrived.
01:25There'd been an earthquake in Lomshi, hundreds of miles away, exactly where the machine pointed.
01:29Then came the tragedy.
01:31Around 200 AD, the device vanished.
01:34For 1800 years, no one saw it again.
01:37No drawings, no fragments.
01:39All that survived was a description, 1916 characters long, in the official history of the Han dynasty.
01:45That's all anyone had.
01:47So in 1951, when historian Wang Jindwa took on the reconstruction, he had almost nothing.
01:52Just those 1916 characters.
01:55No blueprint.
01:56No parts.
01:58No way to check his work.
02:00Here's the twist that matters.
02:02Back in 1936, Wang had leaned toward a design called a suspended pendulum.
02:06Hang a heavy weight, the ground shakes, the weight stays still by inertia, triggering the mechanism.

02:16But by 1951, he switched to an upright rod.
02:20Imagine a thin pole standing vertically, tall and unstable.

03:00There's just one problem.
03:01It didn't work.
03:02The upright rod relies on unstable equilibrium.
03:06Imagine a beer bottle standing upside down.
03:09If it falls, the alarm goes off.
03:11But was it knocked by an earthquake, or a draft, or a slamming door?
03:15The machine can't tell.
03:16And its internal structure was flawed.
03:19The balls couldn't even drop properly.
03:21When the Tangshan earthquake struck in 1976, it did nothing.
03:25When Wenchuan struck in 2008, nothing.
03:28The reconstruction that represented China at the United Nations couldn't detect the most devastating quakes in its modern history.
03:34In 1976, China's founding seismologist told Wang Jindwa to his face, a piece of meat hung under a roof beam

03:42He was right.
03:43Meat swings when the ground shakes.
03:45So where did it break?
03:47A professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University found the clue.
03:50The device had a central pillar, described by a word meaning thick, or massive.
03:55But Wang read it as meaning single, or solitary.
03:58So instead of a thick pillar, he built a single thin rod.
04:01One character.
04:03A misinterpretation of a single ancient word reversed the entire working mechanism.
04:07Now, in Wang's defense.
04:09He wasn't a fraud.
04:11He had 1916 characters and nothing physical to check.
04:15Reconstructing it was essentially guessing.
04:17Being wrong was the likely outcome.
04:19He'd even been right in 1936 before changing course.
04:22And China in 1951 needed this.
04:25A country emerging from a century of hardship needed something to display, to prove the weight of its civilization.
04:31The model carried national pride.
04:33But the real problem wasn't that Wang built the wrong thing.
04:36It's that the model's status rose so high that everyone forgot it was just a hypothesis.
04:41Here's a small story that says more than all of that.
04:43In 1998, the Hunan Museum needed a seismoscope for an exhibition.
04:47They asked the Suzhou Institute to copy Wang's model.
04:51Then they asked, can you make it move?
04:53The answer, impossible.
04:55Even the one in the National Museum couldn't detect earthquakes.
04:58But the Institute offered an alternative.
05:01They could hide a mechanism underneath, so it would move on cue.
05:04Artificially.
05:06The Hunan Museum refused.
05:08The curator said, we exhibit a scientific instrument, not a toy.
05:11That would deceive our visitors.
05:13So the non-working model sat honestly in the hall, doing nothing, for years.
05:18Eventually, researchers at the China Earthquake Network Center restarted the work.
05:22After over a year, they confirmed the correct mechanism was the suspended pendulum,
05:26the direction Wang favored in 1936.
05:2967 years to come full circle.
05:31In 2009, a new reconstruction went on display.
05:35This one could actually detect real earthquake waves.
05:38But the lead researcher was careful.
05:40This is only our understanding in the current era, he said.
05:43Not the machine itself.
05:45Then, in autumn 2017, something quietly happened.
05:49The new history textbook removed the Zhang Heng section.
05:52That image, burned into generations, disappeared from the pages.
05:56So here's what I genuinely can't wrap my head around.

06:24I don't blame Wang Jindwa.
06:26He had 1,916 characters.
06:29Being wrong was the most probable outcome.
06:31I just can't figure out one thing.
06:33A machine that everyone knew was broken.
06:36Why did it take 41 years to change?
06:38In 1998, a man with a single exhibition hall said,
06:42We exhibit instruments, not toys.
06:44And he did it in one year.
06:46So before you rush to blame someone, consider this.
06:49Maybe there was no villain.
06:51Wang was guessing.
06:52Editors copied what came before.
06:55Curators exhibited what they were given.
06:57Every step seemed reasonable.
06:59No one was evil.
07:01And yet, that error lived for 41 years.
