WEEI Patriots reporter Justin Turpin joined the show to talk about the roster heading into the regular season, the lack of depth, and what position group he feels comfortable with.
Transcript
00:00And with us here at Fenway, a guy who we're going to talk to about a couple of things.
00:05He was down to the whole Jalen Brown extravaganza where no Celtics were there,
00:11just the mayor naming us, didn't even name a street after him, just gave him like a street sign, right?
00:15Yeah, just a street sign.
00:17It's like, okay, cool.
00:18And I got like weirdly emotional.
00:20Nice, you put my name on a sign.
00:22I think you could have done that on Canva before I showed up.
00:26I thought that was weird.
00:27I was like, oh, they're naming a street after him.
00:28They're like, no, they're just giving him a sign that happens to have his name on it.
00:31And that was very odd.
00:33But Justin Turpin is also a guy who's been down at camp ever since this thing started.
00:39And now he sits here as we look at this big roster that has finally settled.
00:44And Justin, thanks for coming out with us, man.
00:46We appreciate it.
00:47Yeah, of course.
00:47Thanks for having me on.
00:49So what do you make of the final cut and everything that you've seen?
00:54I know there's a lot of talk about how looking at what's here, it seems like Vrabel was right.
01:00Not a lot of depth, correct?
01:02Yeah, for sure.
01:03And I don't think there were many cuts on roster cut down day yesterday that were particularly surprising.
01:07I feel like this one was pretty straightforward.
01:09But there is certainly some interesting areas on the roster here.
01:13Isn't that interesting, though, that there was no surprises?
01:17Doesn't it tell you something about the roster?
01:19It tells you about the depth, that they don't have it.
01:20That there are no surprise cuts because they didn't really have to worry about that.
01:24The front line players are the front line players.
01:26And then what's behind them, there's still a lot to be desired.
01:29And I just want to real quick, sorry, Rich, just to inject this thought because it's been on my brain
01:34the last couple of days.
01:36Everybody's been talking about how lackadaisical the effort was in that last preseason game,
01:40how guys just had no energy, they were getting run on.
01:43It's because all those guys out there playing new, nothing they did in that game was going to make a
01:48difference.
01:49They were already decided who was making the team because they were in street clothes.
01:54So it almost makes that third preseason game.
01:56I'm not surprised guys weren't balling out.
01:59They also played that Saturday.
02:00Those guys got a ton of reps at the end of camp.
02:02At that point, you're just gassed.
02:04It was so condensed into the schedule where, yeah, of course they're not going to have it all at the
02:09end.
02:10And those guys, I'd push back a little bit.
02:12I think those guys would be trying to kind of make their last case for, if not the Patriots, another
02:16team, try to put that on film.
02:18So maybe I'd push back on that.
02:19But I think it was just how condensed the schedule was.
02:23They were just out of gas.
02:24Think about the hours wasted, Rich, for Terp at those preseason games.
02:28That's like nine hours of his life watching guys that did not make the roster.
02:32You should sue the NFL, get Glassman on the phone, or at least get a bye week or something.
02:36Dude, seriously, there's no surprises, and I agree with you, but there's one guy that was the talk of the
02:44town.
02:44No one could stop talking about this guy.
02:46He doesn't make the roster opening day, but now he does this year.
02:51No one's talking about it.
02:52Efton Chisholm.
02:52It's like, dude, this guy was like, everybody was talking about Efton Chisholm this time last year.
02:57Oh, he didn't make the team.
02:58And now he makes it.
02:59No one's talking about it.
03:00And that was partially like the Kayshawn booty trade.
03:02There's a lot of factors into that.
03:04Obviously, he's in a contract year.
03:06You want to let him kind of maximize his value.
03:08But also, that's a bet on Kyle Williams.
03:10In some ways, Efton Chisholm as well, where if you wanted to keep Kayshawn booty, the answer would have been
03:15just let Efton Chisholm go.
03:17But they clearly believe in him as well.
03:18So, yeah, I don't think there's a lot of talk about that because I think he did enough to solidify
03:23his spot where it really would have been super surprising had they cut him.
03:27Oh, my God.
03:28I'm sorry, Rich, to break in with breaking news.
03:31This is tragedy.
03:31The Cowboys have released Joe Milton.
03:34I cannot believe it.
03:36Oh, no.
03:37Bazooka Joe.
03:38Not Bazooka Joe.
03:39What is happening?
03:40That's two dumb teams.
03:41Two teams don't get it.
03:43Two teams, clearly, that he's played for do not get it.
03:46By the way, real quick.
03:48To start somewhere.
03:48Clearing a runway for someone?
03:50Speaking of that, did you hear about Will Levis?
03:52Like, Will Levis got released.
03:54Really?
03:54Yeah, he got released.
03:56And, like, when he was first drafted, that guy was supposed to be a franchise quarterback.
04:01Bring it back to Joe Milton because Ken's favorite player is Joe Milton.
04:05Sign him.
04:06I would grab him now.
04:07Cut Baron Morton.
04:08Get my man Joe back.
04:09Come on.
04:10Dude.
04:10If he goes to Cleveland.
04:11You need to call him.
04:12Oh, yeah.
04:12Cleveland's quarterback.
04:14Vikings.
04:14The Vikings.
04:15Well, I think they believe in Kyler.
04:16But, yeah, below him, there's not a whole lot there.
04:19What was the team you mentioned?
04:20Cleveland.
04:21Cleveland?
04:22They got a quarterback that's making a lot of money they're going with.
04:26But, yeah, wow.
04:27I'm sorry, Ken.
04:28That's tough, buddy.
04:29That is tough.
04:30Well, at least he was blocked there by Dak, so I'm fine with it.
04:32He'll land somewhere good.
04:34So, what position is going to kill the Patriots?
04:37I still really worry about their linebacker depth.
04:40Like, what is behind Christian Ellis and Robert Spillane?
04:43If one of those guys go down, you're in a lot of trouble.
04:45I think tight end's another one, but because you're putting a lot of pressure on Eli Raritan,
04:48obviously a rookie tight end, who showed flashes both as a blocker and a pass catcher in the preseason.
04:53But it's a lot different once you, you know, start playing teams once.
04:57The Patriots didn't see any starters in the preseason.
04:59For all the talk about the Patriots not playing their starters, they didn't see any either.
05:03So, what difference would it really have made?
05:05So, cornerbacks, another one, obviously, you feel really good about the duo or the trio
05:09if you had Marcus Jones in there as well with Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis.
05:13But what's behind them?
05:14I mean, a lot of those guys that we saw on Thursday when Dylan Gabriel completed 12 of his first
05:2015 passes
05:21and five straight drives.
05:22Craig Woods was out there, yeah.
05:23Craig Woods.
05:24Yeah, he had, like, these guys that, Kendall Vildor, like, I know he didn't make the team.
05:27That was a little bit of a surprising cut.
05:29But, you know, those guys that were out there, like Charles Woods,
05:32like, those guys are going to be second in line here.
05:34So, you know, you do highlight that.
05:35They did keep and retain.
05:39I bet you it's a record.
05:41Three undrafted rookie free agents.
05:43Like, we talk about maybe they're going to keep one.
05:46They kept three of them.
05:48Tanner Arkin, Khalil Jacobs, Channing Canada.
05:51Bang.
05:52They did pick up a tight end today on waivers, so I wonder what that means for Tanner Arkin.
05:56But he fits the mold of, like, a backup for Reggie Gilliam,
05:59who they've been managing throughout the offseason here.
06:02Partially that because of his age.
06:03But they also clearly are going to put some mileage on that body this year for him.
06:07And, you know, they're trying to keep him fresh.
06:08But Tanner Arkin can kind of be that guy where he's not really going to be as much of a
06:12tight end
06:12as he is a fullback.
06:13Question for all three of you guys.
06:15Real quick, Rich.
06:16Sure.
06:17Bigger question mark.
06:18O-line or pass rush?
06:19Because I have no idea what either of those units are going to look like when the season opens.
06:23Pass rush.
06:24I don't think it's close.
06:25Yeah, I think it's pass rush.
06:26Really?
06:26And I don't even think it's close.
06:28Well, O-line was, last we saw him was a mess.
06:30Will Campbell was a disaster.
06:31And I've not seen Vera Tucker on the field yet.
06:34I think Will Campbell is going to benefit greatly from playing next to Elijah Vera Tucker.
06:38Like, last year when you're playing next to Jared Wilson,
06:40those are two rookies on the left side of the line.
06:42Like, those guys are trying to figure it out.
06:44When you're playing next to an established veteran,
06:46a guy who went healthy as one of the best guards in football,
06:48and Elijah Vera Tucker, I think he's really going to benefit from that.
06:51And Jared Wilson, he's in a similar boat moving back to his natural position at center.
06:55I really don't worry about the top line.
06:57I know we've talked about this really throughout the summer,
06:59especially with the joint practices.
07:00When those guys struggle, when the line struggles in those practices and those sessions,
07:04it's obvious.
07:05And those guys become a story.
07:07And they weren't.
07:08And that includes two practices against one of the best defensive fronts in football,
07:13the Eagles.
07:13So I feel better about the line.
07:15And the pass rush is just, man, there's not a whole lot there.
