00:24and we love to talk about it today nice go ahead hi my name is Charlotte Metcalfe I am a
00:31native of
00:32Detroit I'm a fashion designer my brand is called Butterflies Custom Designs I have been designing
00:39over 20 years now I cater to all likes of world um from avant-garde to street wear I do
00:50it all
00:50I'm gonna amaze you this time at the goddess fit show this time nice and you hello everyone I am
00:59Tariel Jackson I am here from Detroit a model and a stylist licensed cosmetologist um been doing
01:07modeling for two years and hair and nails makeup for six years nice nice uh first of all welcome
01:13all of you thank you for coming ladies and gentlemen appreciate y'all for stopping through
01:17um let's start with you Alwyn did I pronounce that right uh Alwyn Alwyn you got it okay all right
01:24give people like a little bit of your background man for people who are not familiar with your work
01:29and how long you been doing this uh well I started off being an artist that's where I kind of
01:33like
01:34started my creativity uh I was rapping singing doing like a lot of uh mixed genres okay um I kind
01:40of
01:40transferred into that going into um producing my own shows starting with small concerts going into a
01:46bigger music festivals um and then I kind of transferred again uh uh into the fashion industry
01:52I started off being a fashion designer and I said what way can I uh put my um designs on
01:58a platform
01:59than doing my own fashion show so last year I decided to do my own fashion show the first one
02:04which
02:04was goddess fit fashion show uh the very first one um it was like a welcoming welcoming to the fashion
02:10industry for me um I met some amazing designers models and people on the way that I still am
02:14working with to today and that was kind of like what got me my first steps into the industry that
02:19I'm in right now you started off doing music correct yes sir yes and then you do fashion music and
02:27fashion
02:27kind of go hand in hand so what made you want to like stop the music thing and then kind
02:32of focus
02:32more on the fashion side of things um it was pretty much um just the time of where where I'm
02:39at in my life
02:40right now um music was kind of uh a back step and then fashion was kind of um more appealing
02:49to me and I
02:50just love the fact the production side of it kind of putting something together a creative mindset uh bringing
02:55people together and um just putting on a amazing production for all attendees so you said you like
03:02the production side of things were you producer as well or just you know a rapper um I didn't produce
03:07music but um but uh once I started throwing my own shows and actually being you know being on the
03:13production of that I started enjoying that more than actually being the artist so what about the
03:18production side of fashion intrigues you so much um just pretty much putting everything together just um
03:24verging venturing out into different things um uh just meeting different designers different cultures
03:31people that um you know just stand for just so many different things I've learned so many different
03:36things on the way of to today um you know that's really helped me so I feel like that's one
03:42of the
03:42things you said uh you started last year yep yep I did okay and like before that you was doing
03:48a music
03:49thing or you still okay so you only been a year in man you moving you know
03:53I've I've I've pretty rapid yeah yeah yeah yeah that's dope though man for just for it to be just
03:59one year man that's nice um Charlotte your history was a little bit longer how long you how long have
04:04you been doing uh fashion design and everything I started when I was 23 okay I'm now 53 so we
04:12pushing
04:1230 years now that's dope that's a long time yeah self-taught I've never been to design school
04:19um what motivated me to start was my size so I'm petite but curvy okay so it was just always
04:29a
04:29problem finding nice clothes for myself that fit and one day I just took something and loose and it
04:36started from here so 30 years ago and it just moved on and moved on um into fashion shows
04:44so I produced also my own fashion shows I've just started um coming out working with other entities
04:52like all in um the last five years so before that prior it was just exclusively my own shows for
05:00cold butterflies um but I've enjoyed working with other fashion moguls and things like that
05:07and it's pushing me and you know we kind of push each other nice and it's you know when you
05:14find
05:14people that that energy right you know you stick with those people and keep going and you know
05:21elevate each other cold butterflies would you come up with that name from well I have one daughter
05:27that passed right so she she enjoyed butterflies a baby so that kind of incorporated into the name
05:36and then butterflies you know they go into the cocoon they come in you know you look at them
05:41they're ugly the caterpillars it will people assume that that's what they and then they come out into
05:47a butterfly so one moment you may feel this way but you know give it time and you'll come out
05:54that
05:55cocoon and you gonna you'll make it then you know it's something beautiful after the struggle
06:00I like that nice uh tariel now you are a model correct and what's the other thing you said you
06:05do a licensed cosmetologist okay two different avenues right yes how did this how did you
06:11mesh the two together well I started doing hair nails everything during the time of the pandemic so
06:18I just always had it in me you know beauty everything everybody love it and modeling I've always
06:23wanted to be a fashion designer but it takes some time to know how to do something so I just
06:30stick
06:30to modeling first and it grew with me my best friend actually got me into it so we've been doing
06:34it
06:34together gotcha gotcha um you said how long you've been modeling two years what's your favorite part
06:39about modeling so far every part about modeling is the fashion shows like I like bringing the designers
06:45looks together like and my own pieces and touches and everything so it's just does that ever
06:52make the designer feel a ways that you add in your own style to it because they love it okay
06:57gotcha
06:57okay love it I mean of course I asked them if they like it first I'm not gonna just put
07:01something
07:01they don't like it of course I you know we gotta work together but yeah they love it nice how
07:07how
07:07long have all three y'all known each other um I think I met cold butterfly um back in February
07:14I know
07:15you did Ari's show we did a collab I think that was the first time I actually worked with you
07:20the first
07:20time and then Tariel I think the first time that we worked together was possibly one of your shows
07:27it has to be yeah it has to be last year was it the snowfall snowfall gala yeah maybe show
07:32yeah
07:33so it's been it's been about nine ten months for almost nine months for each one oh okay
07:38so it's been a great you two spoke about creating or doing your own fashion shows what's the significance
07:44of that why do I've heard that a lot when it comes to people doing their own fashion shows why
07:48is
07:48that like the thing I have to do my own instead of just working with people because you want to
07:55have your own touch on everything okay and when you have a vision you want it to be the vision
08:04yeah okay I mean I just like the creative aspect of it just trying to bring something that's in your
08:10head to to the life and um I just feel like that's what I'm trying to do with this show
08:15um the show
08:17that I have is September 6th uh God is fit we're going Hollywood so a lot of people ask is
08:22the show
08:22going to be Hollywood and things like that so I like I like that people are getting intrigued that way
08:27of course it's going to be in Detroit but we're letting them know that we're bringing that feel to
08:31the show we're bringing that glamour that glitz to the show um so what I like to do with my
08:35shows is
08:36I like to just bring that immersive feeling uh to the audience I like to make people feel like
08:41they're stepping out of um their comfort zone or just not at a normal fashion show I want to be
08:47known
08:47as a creative director and a visualist that's uh my focus you said you don't want to be a normal
08:53fashion show yes sir okay what makes something a normal fashion show and then what makes what you do
08:58a not a so normal fashion show what do you typically see well I mean a lot of fashion shows
09:03are themed
09:04um I feel like that's um kind of one of the focuses um with my fashion shows I just try
09:10to
09:11just be as creative like when it comes to the theme to adding um a certain feel with like the
09:16staging
09:17and just different props and um just going beyond the the normal thought process of putting a show
09:23together you know someone can be like okay what do I need for a fashion show I can just get
09:28a few
09:28designers and get some models and you know they don't really think the depths of it you know I like
09:33to
09:33think okay if we're going to do um a snowfall and let's have the models walk down mountains or let's
09:39create this let's create this type of um atmosphere that's going to make you know the attendees feel
09:44that to make the models feel special that they're you know happy they're a part of this um you know
09:49production the same thing with designers so that's just my uh you know view whenever I try to put it
09:55together a show you said you wanted to be immersive as well how do you make that coming like that
09:59means
10:00you want people to interact okay so what why is that important to you to have the crowd interact
10:03with the models and everything like that um well I mean it's just like um last year my theme was
10:09the
10:10mardi gras so we were passing out a lot of uh mardi gras paraphernalia and uh like mask and beads
10:15and
10:15things like that trying to get the audience you know involved and make them feel like you know they
10:20want bourbon street um our um staging was set up like a like bourbon street we had um the street
10:27street lights on the side so uh we just tried to get bring that feel to the audience um to
10:32everyone
10:33that was in attendees got you got you and your what you said 20 plus years or 30 years experience
10:38it's almost 30 almost 30 years what's some of your I guess most memorable things and some things
10:44we'll just start with the memorable what's some of your most memorable moments uh thus far
10:49thus far I gotta say um when I made uh one of my hats and it was a closet so
10:57she closed the
10:58the curtain and she changed her outfit in there on stage and she opened the curtain up it was all
11:05attached to a hat just like the hats I made so I'm getting known for my hats uh they're kind
11:12of
11:12costume pieces but I've had people buy them for birthdays celebrations um photo shoots is what
11:20they're most used for and for fashion shows to shut it down how do y'all come up with these
11:27ideas she
11:28said she had a closet for a hat like where did that where's that come from oh I don't know
11:33you just
11:33start with you start with an idea so I was like well what if she can change her clothes on
11:38stage well we
11:39need something and it just goes oh yeah and it get bigger and bigger the ideas start flowing huh
11:45is there something that you ever feel like that was way too far because if you would have told me
11:50you know what I'm saying I'm about to do a closet on the stage I'd have been like yeah that's
11:53crazy
11:54so is there any wow got you there's no limitations got you got you all right what's some of the
12:01something that you've put on in terms of like doing this show like you was like that was way out
12:06the box but I loved it actually one of her outfits cold butterflies latex was it it had hearts on
12:12it
12:13and it was different for me but you know sometimes you gotta step in the paint and just yeah wear
12:18it
12:18are you ever nervous on the on the runway and things of that nature I used to cheer so I
12:22feel
12:22like when I'm out in the crowd it kind of black it out so not really but sometimes okay yeah
12:28what's your
12:29favorite part mmm the strut nice nice uh so uh your show's coming up it's when september six
12:39september six okay um talk to us a little bit about the show man this is show number what for
12:43you uh so
12:44this is my fifth show got you um this would be uh uh I've done seven shows as a designer
12:49um so this
12:50just in that year I've just really had a compact year and my whole focus for doing all those shows
12:56doing everything I've done in this this past year is to basically focus on this um to you know do
13:01everything to lead up to this to you know meet new models to meet new designers uh meet new vendors
13:07and just new people that's interested as fashion just as much as I am you know that'd be interested
13:12in the production that I'm trying to put on so um just pretty much um yeah pretty much that
13:19fashion is always changing how do y'all keep up or is it difficult for y'all to keep up
13:24because it's
13:24you know everything is always you know something new something new is that difficult for y'all to
13:28keep up with the new trends the new fashions the new designs is that something difficult for you guys
13:33not for me okay usually because in fashion things always come back so I if it's out of season right
13:41now I'm putting it in the back of the closet yeah yeah even with things I create uh-huh I'll
13:50pull
13:50something out for a show that's coming up and I may have had that piece for a couple years already
13:56but when I put it together again it's just something new I was gonna say the same thing
14:01fashion is always revolving it's everywhere you can make it your own so it's always just there and
14:06different so being creative is a good way to show your style and just different fashion sites okay nice
14:13working with you always said you like working with models and you know different models and um
14:17different vendors and stuff right how does that help you with your creative process it helps me with my
14:23creative process I mean it's the I just look at it as growth you know the more people I work
14:28with
14:28the more designers the more you know I stretch the the margin of of just the models and you know
14:35the
14:35area that I am so used to you know I'm stepping out of my comfort zone um so it's just
14:40with this show that
14:41I have coming up I would say probably about 60 percent of the models are models that I've never worked
14:48with
14:48before which is um pretty I look at it as as I'm moving in the right direction because even the
14:54models
14:54that's worked with me before you know they might be like ah you know I don't know how they personally
14:58feel about it but it's letting me know that I'm growing you know as far as meeting new people you
15:04know
15:04to where you know people are going to come around and you know I'm meeting new models here and there
15:08but at the same time it's uh I just look at it as growth you know being able to develop
15:13um hit new regions
15:15um I'm working at with uh different areas in Michigan now as far as different modeling agencies
15:21I'm working with uh Beauty and Me who uh they're based out in Grand Rapids I'm working with some people
15:27in
15:27Bay City I'm working with um people in Kalamazoo as well so it's just about uh touching different regions
15:33you know just the first show is kind of me getting uh introduced into the fashion world let me meet
15:39some
15:39designers let me meet models now it's about just stretching out and let's go further out into Michigan and meet
15:45these people and meet these people um you know and then after that we're just gonna you know take
15:49it out of the states so nice nice what are some of the I'm gonna ask both of you what
15:54is what are
15:55some of the challenges you guys ran into um being fashion designers let's start with you because you
16:00only been in here a year so I'm assuming that you've ran into a couple road bumps along the way
16:04so
16:04yeah I have I have um some have been um just trying to be creative in different ways as far
16:13as um with um
16:14my brand it's a women's lingerie so we're trying to okay here we go yeah yeah I know
16:21but it's like um the thing about that is it's tough because when you see a man you know selling
16:28women's
16:28lingerie you know you obviously think one thing um but we have so many uh our focus uh with god
16:35is
16:35fit and the design is just basically we're trying to encourage uh confidence and women to be bold
16:41and we have um wide variety of sizes to where you don't see the standard sizes yeah so you know
16:48our
16:48thing with um god is fit with the you know with my design our focus is to you know make
16:55women feel like
16:56okay I see you know a plus side woman or I see a woman that looks similar to me on
17:01the runway or I
17:01see her on our on the website and I would look good in that you know so that's what we
17:06try to instill
17:07that confidence in you know with my brand dope dope what about you um some of the things I've encountered
17:15is like you said with the you do lingerie too I'm sorry I didn't mean it I'm sorry you do
17:20lingerie
17:20too or you do I do okay all right as well um over the top like yeah but I yeah
17:30we gonna get into this
17:31yeah it's really sizing got you so I like I said that's why I started in general because I'm petite
17:39but I was still curvy so coming in the industry it was hard to find curvy models so I'm going
17:45in
17:46thinking like okay you know everybody's not slim but you know so I would always have more plus models
17:57so that kind of made plus models gravitate towards me more and what you said making people just feel
18:03great I love that feeling dope because when they put it on and they had that look like oh I
18:09like it
18:09you know it make you feel good nice you had a part in that dope now with you modeling and
18:16them doing
18:16lingerie is that uh is that awkward for you or do you feel uncomfortable showing that see I haven't
18:23stepped into that box yet okay would you um maybe okay maybe maybe now both of you guys sometimes huh
18:34you keep it modest though if it's a like if she would prefer to be a modest model as I
18:40call
18:41them what is that something different it could still be lingerie but she would have a robe with
18:47hers ah okay okay more concealed yeah you know you could still be sexy as we call it or you
18:53know do you
18:54get more people wanting to wear robes or do you get more people wanted to show everything
18:59show everything yeah I don't know why I'm surprised I'm not you know as a designer I don't
19:06like people to not look well wearing a garment whether because you have models that just say I'll
19:13wear anything right I don't care what it is but you have to as a designer you have to kind
19:19of be
19:20you know like hey you know well maybe this will look better on you or you know you gotta just
19:25give
19:25that kind of encouragement not say I don't like that on you right okay nice now you spoke about
19:31designing for plus size women but you're a smaller individual when they see you they are they like
19:37you well you don't know how at first okay now how do you get them to be like okay I
19:41know what I'm doing
19:42when they see another model got you okay so you're just like okay I did this for her
19:47I got you too uh the name of your uh brand is called what it's called goddess fit where you
19:52get
19:52that name from um I just thought about women as goddesses and they want to be they want to look
19:59fit
20:00you know or feel fit and feel you know comfortable feel confident in what they're wearing so that's
20:06I kind of got put that name together and kind of stuck with me are you ever uncomfortable designing
20:13lingerie for women um or where are you going comfortable at first me um I'm not uncomfortable
20:20with anything I mean um I try to make it a very comfortable experience for the models that I work
20:24with I've had models that um you know feel like you know they want to cover things up there's also
20:29different ways that they can you know represent the brand on the runway you know they can have
20:34um you know you can put like uh some jeans and they can kind of like lower the jeans a
20:38little
20:38bit to show the lingerie um they can have some type of like flannel shirt or anything you know
20:43that kind of match a white t-shirt or something like that if they want to be covered up you
20:47know
20:47robes or something as well that works so it's always you know I found multiple ways to you know
20:52uh help uh you know models feel comfortable in the runway and then also you know I do understand if
20:57they
20:57you know don't want to you know walk in lingerie that's no issue you know that's one reason why
21:01I throw fashion shows and I also uh ran a modeling agency as well to where um my focus wasn't
21:09on just
21:09putting women in lingerie was you know helping them um getting fashion shows helping them you know
21:15become better models and and get shows and earn bookings and things like that so nice now I heard
21:22you both speak about building the confidence of these women um with wearing the lingerie how do you do that
21:28because it ain't got no clothes on so how does that help build their confidence in my opinion
21:33encourage work encouraging words um and just like I said just having a a good fit of the outfit gives
21:42them confidence okay a good you know and just let them know like you got this beautiful got you okay
21:50all right have y'all designed men's clothes at all yeah have you tried okay men yes okay street wear
21:57suits blazers alterations dope what about you have you dabbled in the men's clothes as well no
22:04not yet no men's it's coming 2027 though okay all right dope dope now uh so it's a charity event
22:10is
22:10that what this is uh yes so okay talk to me about the charity real quick yes sir so we
22:15are going to be
22:15donating to two charities this year uh cs mott children's hospital university of michigan and also
