00:00All right Detroit, you know I'm bringing you the scoop and today I have Q Sharpe in the building.
00:06Now he's the lead role in Deep and it's hitting theaters August the 20th,
00:11red carpet rolling out at 6 p.m. at the Imagine Theater in Royal Oak and he's filling the role
00:17of no other than Rob Murphy, former exec, piston exec, gotta make sure I get that right,
00:23former piston exec, player, coach, I mean the list goes on and on. Welcome so much for coming to the
00:31show today Q Sharpe. Man I appreciate it thank you for having me man it's been a long week and we got
00:38less than a week left. Yes. And it's going down. It's going down but we made it. Yeah. Now you know
00:45Deep is about to drop. Now for my Detroit fam listening right now how would you describe it
00:51in your own words? Inspirational um you know people want to leave there with um like I say
00:58inspirational with confidence with um just looking at someone that went through uh trials and
01:04tribulations and made it um went through you know family issues um and just to come out on top
01:12you know what I mean um to come out from from loving basketball but even go even before basketball
01:18I'm going to tell a story of how he was raised um how he was in the streets how um he had a coach
01:25that really saw something in him and turned his life around so it's just showing determination it's
01:31showing uh you know you can make it you know you don't have to be stuck in the streets you can make
01:38it out and make something of yourself. Oh I love that. It's a great great great story yeah. I love that and
01:43I'm like what about Rob Murphy story alone that made you just say oh yeah this role is for me.
01:49Well you know what uh Rob and I we went to school together. Oh yeah he's here behind me went to uh
01:54Mumford Mumford Mustangs. All right shout out to Mumford. Yeah so he was you know into basketball
02:00you know then and then went on to coaching and things of that nature but um I was approached by
02:06Sonya of DR2 um shout out to DR2 and Dennis Reed um and they asked me would I be interested in playing
02:14the role of Rob Murphy or do I know Rob Murphy I'm like yeah I know Robert Murphy you know and so
02:19the casting that they did was just so on point um myself I shared a lead with with um little Blade
02:26which is uh Blade son Blade Icewood son name is Darnell Lindsey Jr. Get out of here. He's a wonderful
02:32actor you know young man he he got it when every time I see him I'm like dude you got it but the
02:38casting was just so on point and then King Wesley played um Rob Murphy's uh best friend Troy and he
02:44looks just like him so they did an amazing job with the casting so it was a connection there and then I
02:49was familiar with the story so yeah. Oh yeah right I mean of course you lived it pretty much you was
02:53right there with him experiencing things that he was experiencing that's that's amazing and it was
02:58coincidental because they didn't even know that you guys were that you knew each other yeah that
03:02you were friends already so that was a match made in heaven I would see. They were they were when
03:06they were showing him the people that they had the ideals for for acting for his uh playing him um
03:13they showed him my pictures like I know him you know I mean it was like but one thing will he be
03:17willing to cut his beard so when they asked me I was at a war show and they was like would you be
03:22willing to cut your beard I'm like what a barber right now ah you know what I mean so I just feel
03:27certain roles and I always wanted to play something that separate me from me if that makes sense yeah
03:33you know what I mean so um when I cut my beard and because I had to shave all the facial hair and
03:39everything um it made me uncomfortable for Q for Quentin but it made me comfortable for the role
03:46you know I mean yeah I know when you act you have to kind of just dive into any role yeah in a way you
03:52got to put your whole mind and body in that like absolutely I can only imagine pressure must put
03:57on you sometimes we had two weeks to get prepared so the good thing about it is this is the first
04:02time this happened um Rob was was able to come to my house and we broke the script down I was gonna
04:08ask you that I was gonna ask you did you have time one-on-one I didn't even know that you guys were
04:11that you guys were friends so that kind of summed it up for me yeah so you guys had a chance to
04:15talking on just oh yeah him his colleagues everybody yeah I got a chance to um he broke
04:21the script down and said hey you know I wasn't um intense right here I was laid back pretty much
04:27through the whole thing nice and so that gave me um some type of something like guy to go off of and
04:33then um he sat down with with King Wesley as well we were all at my house he was telling him how Troy
04:38was he was mild-mannered you know he was laid back never rose you know raised his voice or anything
04:42like that so that kind of helped and then I watched videos of how his mannerisms were how he kept his
04:48hands when he did interviews how he coached and everything so that helped out as well oh that is
04:53so dope and without spoiling too much uh what's one scene in deep you think folks will talk about on the
04:59ride home um oh yeah that's kind of giving it away yeah no y'all gotta give it away it's an intense
05:07scene um when everything unfolds um and that part I can't give away but it's a scene when when it's
05:14like a climax yeah when it unfolds you're gonna be like oh you're gonna be talking about that because
05:19at the end you're gonna see how everything unfold and how it wasn't it's not what you expect
05:26okay it's not what you can expect okay so you got to go see it you gotta go see it okay so the movie
05:33sounds like it's a lot of powerful moments in there yeah how did you balance those emotional
05:37weight of that role while still trying to keep your own piece off the camera um just you know you
05:43have to well one thing I always say you know especially when you plan someone's life story
05:47um you want to enter the the day that you're well not even a day a couple days prior to you shooting
05:53your scene you want to actually captivate the essence of that character that you plan before you
05:58get to the studio or wherever you're going right because you want to get it you want to have your
06:02mind ready you don't want to go into the studio then getting into it no you want to already have
06:07it so that makes it was able by me knowing him and by him breaking the script down it gave me a
06:13comfort level to where I could turn it on a few days prior to and still be cute but at the same time
06:20like when I was at work I was going over the scenes in my mind and people were looking at me because I'm
06:25talking and not saying anything but I'm I'm robbed at work right you know what I mean and so I
06:32think that preparation you have to to to bring a character to life you have to have proper
06:36preparation so it's not like you had that yeah yeah and I had advantage too because I was about
06:42to say you had a little little bit of advantage we have some mutual friends probably known each
06:45other since um I mean for years and um so I had advanced we got a mutual friends that we're
06:52connected to and so they were able to give me insight insight yeah oh so all around so you got
06:58some from him his colleagues everybody yeah oh that's dope so it's really made it more realistic
07:02I'm not saying that the movie wasn't you know of course gonna be realistic it's about his life
07:05but the fact that you guys had every little bit of detail that's right that that makes a difference
07:10it makes it like I said it's the first time I've ever just sit with someone this story's about him
07:15and he was on hands like yeah it had to be uh authentic as possible yeah but you know with movies of
07:21course you're gonna have some um like I don't say fiction but it's things to stretch the story out
07:27oh you know what I mean but for the most part I could say he was there on hands to make sure
07:30everything was authentic as possible oh that's a good thing yeah it is because you know he's like
07:35you like I said Q I wasn't I wasn't mad here I wasn't hollering here I wasn't intense so I was
07:40pretty much laid back so I just want you to be laid back which is good because you know a lot of
07:44times people don't have you know that guide right in front of like uh like one of the perfect
07:49coaches you could have you know they just study movies and scenes and old you know home videos
07:56that's normally how they get it their craft but yeah you had a little bit had one up on a couple
08:00people so that's I had one up the first day of shooting first day of filming um so I went and got
08:06I studied what his daily wear right okay so I went to the store and got a couple things the first day
08:13on set I had um a vest on he has like a black hoodie um not a sweatshirt but it's like a shirt
08:21but it had a hood to it um black gym pants and black shoes we turned the corner and we had the
08:26same thing on get out of here was this like planned or this was a random day this was just like he was
08:32like my goodness and and I was looking like man we look alike we see that's that's a funny moment
08:38to talk about over over dinner and stuff after the fact I know y'all have a lot more memories
08:43yeah which I made after this movie that is dope and then I know with basketball um no with sports
08:49alone acting and sports play hand in hand and it's discipline uh what would what did you borrow
08:56from the athlete mindset to help bring Rob to life um just like just the preparation just you know
09:04determination I really wanted to do this once they say Q you are the guy that's playing this role
09:10this is someone's life story yeah so you have to have a diligent mind because you don't want to mess
09:16this up of course you know what I mean it's it's so much riding on this it's this you can only tell
09:20your story for the one you know the first time one time right you know what I mean so everything else
09:27is just you're trying to reconstruct whatever but I was just making sure that I made him proud
09:31because he had the book out already right you know I mean he said he has a lot of offers from people
09:37that wanted to to get the movie from LA from from Atlanta from Texas or whatever but then COVID hit
09:43and so COVID shut a lot of things down shut some things down and then um Dennis Reed and them they
09:49they uh I think they were in the gym and they saw each other it was like hey and they discussed it
09:54and they talked about it what a small world here it is this was a couple years prior to even shooting
09:59wow okay so um yeah just planting that little seed yeah yeah yeah and something like this of this
10:06is this magnitude because because um you know Rob Murphy I mean he's ESPN sports analyst I mean he's coach
10:11so he's connected to a lot of people that are familiar with his story right you know I mean so
10:17I know he wanted to make it as pure and as like I say authentic as possible and I think the DR2 did
10:24a wonderful job with this casting and then you don't just want to get someone that looks like him you
10:30want somebody to be able to deliver exactly you know what I mean it's not easy yeah because this is
10:34full of emotions uh it's full of um inspiration happiness and it takes you through a roller coaster
10:39yeah oh man so I they picked the right person I'm gonna say that right now I can tell I can't wait
10:45I'm excited to see it myself I'm excited man I'm I've been promoting and selling tickets been
10:52everything yeah so I know with this being basketball um were there scenes that you had to train for or
10:59did you already have everything the game already tight um you know what as far as we we tapped into
11:04some of the coaching a little bit um okay um I had to actually do a live rehearsal right there
11:10you know and then he would say hey you know I was doing this or this is you know and like I said
11:15about me looking at some of the way he coached you know and how he's you know now you see him on
11:19everyday basis he'll have on you know dress down polo style shirt when you see him coaching suit
11:25time so when the I think I may be the opening scene I'm not sure but it's in the uh trailer
11:31where I'm coaching the guys I'm kneeled down I'm telling them to play and when I turned around and
11:37looked while I was watching the trailer I'm like I really look like a coach you know so and Dennis
11:43Reed man he would definitely get on you and let till you get it right uh man I'm I'm I surprised
11:48all the great movies he's made yeah yeah yeah so you you you have to be prepared yeah and you have to
11:54you know we're human so we're going to mess up maybe forget a line or two but for the most part
11:59you want to be prepared you want to come in there and you want to do what you're supposed to do
12:03absolutely so what was harder running drills on the court or remembering your lines on set um I would
12:10say I'll say maybe running drills because like acting to me I love it you know I come from I come
12:17from the theater world okay yeah I'm I'm um advocate for a theater like I feel that
12:23if you really want to act you know you go through the theater channels not saying you have to go
12:29through them but somewhere down in your career tap into that right because it opens up your mind for
12:34a script reading it opens up your mind because it's no do-overs yeah you know um acting you know
12:40filming you can cut stop this and so that's actually almost a rehearsal if you will but theater
12:47once you go on that stage that's it it's lights camera action it's wonderful so I try to go I try
12:53to go back maybe once a year um like I did a lot of plays with um uh playwright jay mcclain
12:59and she's she's wonderful script writing and she's directing and have wonderful plays so that helped
13:05that helped with this project with deep oh that's awesome you know I see a lot of actors going back
13:10to absolutely going back to theater yeah and it makes I didn't think about that until you said that
13:15okay it keeps you in sync absolutely and it actually it opens you up it opens you up and
13:21you got you have to have sometimes you know the the crowd don't know you mess up you know I mean
13:27you have to keep going you have to keep going because like I say it's no do-over it's no stop
13:31it's no cuts and they don't know when you mess up your scene partner know you messed up yeah that's
13:35true they can bring you back with a word or something and it'll snap you back you know I've had
13:40that happen yeah but the crowd didn't know you just keep going right that's why I always assume
13:43like they don't know unless you just you freeze or something or the main thing is to keep going
13:47that's the same thing in radio so I can understand that yeah 100% yeah and you know with uh with the
13:52movie almost coming out I gotta ask about behind the scenes what was the vibe like was it more like
13:56chilled or was it more like let's grind and get it done it was chill it was like you know when the
14:03times we had down oh man we was having fun you know having fun but then it was time to go up
14:08you know and then DR2 they run like a weld oil machine okay yeah so I'm in the chair you know
14:14how long before a Q or they didn't call me Rob they didn't call me Q on set they call me Rob
14:18all right you was in character some of the some of the look some of the people from DR2 still call
14:22me Rob to this day they don't even call me Q they call me Rob remember that's gonna be like a thing
14:26now it's gonna be trade your trademark pretty much absolutely you're now a Rob yeah that's your
14:30yeah so it was chill it was real chill when it's time to get the business you you you you have to
14:35lock in and you have to bring him yeah absolutely well you know if someone's deciding to uh make
14:43plans on August 20th in Detroit uh what's your one-line pitch to get them to the deep red carpet
14:50uh come see your boy man come come come check me out this is my big one yeah so um it's like I
14:59said I shared a lead with with Darnell which is a little blade but this is my first lead role
15:04I've had supporting leads I've had um you know um but this is the big one and you know I always
15:11say this I say if you look at um Denzel Washington who played Malcolm X if you look at Ray who played
15:18um uh oh I'm Ray Charles yes and if you look at uh Will Smith he played um Muhammad Ali so what I'm
15:27saying is because I know those are on a much more you know but their careers where their careers took
15:33off from that yeah what happened it just inclined from when you playing somebody's story like it's
15:39I wish I did have more time to actually get his mannerisms and his voice down packed
15:45but I did what I could do in two weeks yeah yeah in two weeks I'm sorry two weeks that's all you had
15:51to like get ready and prepped yes is that is that normal in the acting world um no you get a little
15:57bit more time especially if you playing someone if you playing absolutely so you need going because
16:01you figure like Ray was with Ray Charles for two years yeah every day and and and then I don't like
16:06if you mimic somebody or trying to follow or and be like them for the for the role I would only assume
16:12you would need at least I was just being generous with a few months yeah a few months um especially
16:17independent I would say a few months but if you're doing something like I say Will and Will was with
16:21Muhammad Ali you know and just getting and but when you capture that moment and you you really you
16:28really hit it it's sky's the limit yeah and this is this is I've played you know police officers
16:34multiple times I played the dope guy I played pastor I played which are great roles but I always
16:41ask and you have to be careful what you ask for because God will give it to you yes he will and he
16:45he gave it to me because I said I want to play something that separates me from me me from me
16:51and this was the this was the role here so would you would you classify this as your favorite role
16:56or is it too hard to say right now well it's too hard to say right now because I'm a hard critic on
17:00myself I mean we all are we all are it's natural I'm a hard critic but uh Dennis Reed said I did good um
17:06Rob was like I I did great and so um I want to see it because I might be in there cringing in the
17:13theater but for the most part um yeah this is this is one that I feel all of them are important
17:20yes but I would say this is the most important because I'm playing someone right and for Rob
17:27Murphy to say that I did a great job I'm satisfied because it was a couple times on there he said hey
17:34you know it kind of took me back to what I was going through at that time you know so if you can do
17:38that with with the guy's story right you know what I mean it just it's impactful oh man that's
17:45beautiful well you heard him you got to make sure you go see the movie deep it premieres August the
17:5120th yes at Imagine Theater out in Royal Oak red carpet at six which means the movie will probably start
17:56at eight um I would say yeah um they said seven they said seven but there's so much going on
18:02you never know red carpet oh you want to get there early anyway yeah so I would say seven seven thirty
18:07um because I know one thing about Rob Murphy that he's on time oh no that's right and gotta be he
18:14has structure because that comes from a coach yeah you're coaching your students to have structure
18:18you have to so but this is his first time in this field you know what I mean so on the other side on
18:24the other side so you know with with the with the red carpet you got you know cast members taking
18:28pictures doing interviews and sometimes they can stretch over a little bit so oh that's awesome
18:32well before you go yes it's some fun fun questions I want to ask about like three of them okay got
18:37three of them in me right now okay so what is your favorite piston player of all time Isaiah Thomas
18:42okay why absolutely that's I mean because he's a little guy okay you know I mean and he's a little
18:48guy but he made a big impact you know and he played with one team yes and he took a team
18:55that prior to him getting there you know they were you know it was you know so-so but when he got there
19:02I mean he did what he had to do and they took they took the 88 uh championship from us we were right
19:11there playing Lakers they caught a bold call on Lambeer from um Lou Alcindor I'll say that I don't know if
19:19y'all know Lou Alcindor but that is that's old school but um uh yeah they took the call from him
19:29but then I think that particular game I think Isaiah twisted his ankle and he was hurt he was really
19:34really hurt and then he scored 25 points in one quarter we still lost because of that call get out
19:40of here but I'm just saying his endurance he's not letting his size be hindrance to him and he
19:45showed the world like I'm big at heart okay and I got this right yeah oh that's dope okay what's your
19:50favorite uh basketball movie ever now I'm about to show my age I know the gray um oh my god why you do
19:59this to me I had to ask the fish that saved Pittsburgh oh wow I'm going back to Dr. J I'm going
20:06I've seen that in my uncle's uh cabinet at the bottom you know where we had the big uh box TV
20:12yeah the box TV that was VCR cassette tape oh so I'm gonna put you up on game yeah please
20:17Lou Alcindor is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar okay that was his name before he uh I think if I'm not mistaken
20:22before he became Muslim oh yeah yeah yeah so I'm like let me do that but fish that saved Pittsburgh
20:30I was young watching that and I was looking at um you know I used to love uh Dr. J he was in there doing
20:35this thing flow so I would say that my flow yeah so I'm gonna check that out I never seen it I
20:40seen it in my uncle's shelf I never watched it like classic classic man I'm just I'm showing my
20:45A's no look I thought you were gonna say something like love and basketball or something I love
20:49basketball was good good but or above the rim that was one of the oh I'm a poc fanatic look I forgot about
20:59I'm gonna go with one of the originals okay you know because I would say because of that they were
21:03allowed to make those it was yeah they they paved the way yeah they paved the way but oh you said
21:07above the rim my goodness look my last my last question okay okay so what's the last song you
21:13have on repeat bonus points if it's a throwback that we play on the bounce oh you said bonus points
21:18bonus points it was throwback you know what I'm such a Kim fan I'm such a Kim fan so I have
21:24um ah it's I'm playing it now when I put up um not how did you find your way back to my life um
21:33oh my god it's off intimacy three um I know you're talking about but I don't know that it sounds I'll
21:40never leave you and I'll never lie I'll be right here by your side okay can you feel it oh there we go
21:49can you feel it okay can you feel it it's on repeat let's give it to a yes and then the clips
21:53the clips I'm sorry I had to add that too that's my that's my uh plus one okay this whole album's
21:58on repeat oh yeah oh yeah you won that you won that yeah well Q thank you so much for coming I
22:04appreciate it thank you for having me now I'm looking forward to seeing I'm looking forward to
22:07seeing the movie deep yeah it's gonna be awesome I'm telling you so August 20th red carpet 6 p.m
22:13Royal Oak Imagine Theater listen I always say this it's red carpet so y'all know how I come
22:17I'm always dressed always you know especially when it's big events like that so don't don't
22:22play around come down to the nine dress to the t absolutely all right until next time all right
22:28thank you your girl Lori Mack on 105 when the bounce
