00:01well thank you des we have here a fixture worthy of that argument two of the continents
00:07four nations portugal one defeat in 16 internationals romania one defeat in 25
00:14competitive internationals england and germany wait and watch and wonder while these two vie
00:21at least temporarily to go top of group a we agree on the whole that a portugal win or perhaps
00:27a draw
00:28would do england nicely let us not however be over parochial most people at this game are not
00:35seeing it through english eyes portugal will join france holland and italy and there is their coach
00:41curlio in the quarterfinals if they can win here and romania though they can't go out here today
00:48should they fail to win they would become heavily reliant on their final game against england
00:53and the results of others
01:00david pleat what do you think once again i expect a close game i agree with john and glenn it
01:05should
01:05be a technical competition maybe a little bit of a game of chess what i am looking to see is
01:12a
01:12cohesive unit really because there's only been a couple of changes one in each side from the first
01:16games and therefore we should be seeing some understandings develop narrow portugal win would
01:22be my prediction
01:25luis costa thrust into the early action he is so pivotal to so much of what they do well
01:31joel pinto and now dimas each side as you have had indicated to you having made one change from the
01:37original game the romanian change is a tactical one and may result in the man marking of figo we shall
01:44see
01:45portugal's change was thrust upon them by injury to the avaturnian abel javier and secretario is at
01:52right full back from left back this is dimas now rui costa he's got away from galka he has joel
01:59pinto
01:59ahead of him it's muntianu going across the pair of them and it is a portuguese free kick awarded
02:07against galka by the french referee gilles vissier you see him there with whistle in hand
02:12this is match 13 of euro 2000 and he is referee 13 we've seen them all now
02:19figo first contribution he's got away from one challenge he's gone down over the second which
02:24was from popescu but if he thought of a penalty it was a little more than a dream
02:39kibu got himself into trouble figo was quickly onto it he's played it for luno gomez who didn't connect
02:47snatched at it slightly figo then grasping on a mistake by the youngest player on the field kibu
02:57we'll see him overstretching figo going in he's got a strange running style but he's
03:02certainly quick and once again a rather sketchy shot there able to go through the game a left-footed
03:09tackling midfield player without getting into trouble as his job really is to get onto ria costa
03:18munciano forward by galka and that is a very very good ball and ilyas going in there and baya came
03:24out in front of moldavan with a beautifully timed approach by the keeper very swiftly and alertly from
03:31his line it's a great move wonderful pass by galka and a quick ball in from the wide it's kibu
03:37who's
03:38breaking down the left a good effect for romania it's figo on the ball though now for portugal
03:42this is joao pinta who has dimas outside of him dimas for portugal and the tackle is by popescu it's
03:50a
03:50corner well the ball seemed to get stuck there under dimas's feet and he knows in he's disappointed
03:54another good supporting one they're using the pullbacks well
04:03big men forward to pescu filippescu
04:11moldavan also a threat in the air all on the edge of the box
04:18slung it in and it got a touch on the way through a corner has been given
04:26you saw just before the game the goal that adrian ilyas scored from a devilish angle against
04:32colombia in the world cup and actually that was a good save by baya there's a well-worked free kick
04:37ball going in on the keeper haji's corner and baya has lost it and ilyas in there
04:44and koto has stretched it away
04:52silly haji he's got such a short fuse he's having a go at the assistant referee there
04:56claiming it was a push or a handball he's been booked
04:59it would be tragic if he got into trouble again today
05:01he's going to take you on the contract and another yellow card in full show this time to
05:11the young romanian fullback
05:17quite clearly hands off
05:22they are finding him a handful and the problem they've got of course is they're putting themselves
05:28under great pressure because uh the more they're going to get booked the more individuals
05:32there's a greater element of them having to play with ten men or even nine and it's the defenders
05:38that are getting into trouble and they've got figo and rio costa who keep running the ball at them
05:41there's always a chance that their dribbling will induce fouls
05:47figo's free kick
05:54just got slightly underneath it but uh figo he can bend them in with some pace from this left-hand
06:00side
06:04forward by coto
06:08away by filippeski
06:22there's a little flash though a little microcosm of what the portuguese are all about
06:31this isn't lovely clever little third man run
06:38luciano he's a big failure as coto
06:41strong as well he crashed to earth though luciano was nearly able to wriggle in
06:48gulker has stolen it from rui costa
06:51the very end of first half stoppage time now petrescu
06:57the very end of the first half now england would have the possibility if they beat germany
07:03tonight of going second if it remained a draw and despite the best efforts of figo there and
07:08hadji a draw is how it stands at the moment even winning the group under these circumstances
07:12would remain a possibility for england who of course are a big part of our thoughts but at
07:17half time in arnhem it is romania nil portugal nil but portugal 16 years ago precisely today
07:28in nantes beat romania 1-0 on their way to the semi-finals
07:33of euro 84 where they played france in one of the classic semi-finals everyone remembers it in
07:40marseille and portugal against france isn't a bad bet for a semi-final here you wouldn't have thought
07:46romania and germany
07:54figo
07:58secretario
07:59up by content completely missed his kick but it bounced nicely for rui costa
08:06and then xiao pinto and then dimas
08:15it was a hefty hit lovely layoff by pinto
08:21good power i think there might have been an offside in the center there of the goal in front of
08:26stella
08:32kivu the left back come up to the box for this one
08:38muncianu has whipped it in and moldovan
08:41got up with a header he may have made some contact he certainly though didn't make the last contact
08:48because another corner has been given
08:55it came off the back of george costa
09:03and this time bias done well
09:07that has cleared hurriedly and has
09:10asked a lot of luno gomez contra was back covering
09:33kivu
09:38Ilia, Kivu has kept on going, Moldovan's going through the middle
09:42it's an ambitious pass from Ilia which had little chance of coming off
09:45Rui Costa has played another
09:48Figo can't get that
09:50lovely bit of cross running there between Figo and
09:53I think it was Nina Gomez
10:00Rui Costa
10:05Secretario outside of him
10:07Costa has crossed
10:08and Contra went in together with Sapinto there
10:15whose dearest wish is that Gilles Vestiaire would deem Contra's challenge
10:20to be contrary to the regulations
10:22he didn't, it's no penalty
10:24fabulous cross made by the run of Secretario on the outside
10:27very difficult to tell
10:29if Pinto had a good case
10:36Canaire holding it up
10:38Arji stabbing it really forward
10:41Contra
10:44Petre
10:47Arji
10:53there's still something going on in there
10:57it's a lively mind
10:59a wonderful imagination
11:01and a pretty good strike
11:02and a good save
11:04yes he had a similar shot didn't he in the first half
11:06that went wide
11:08but
11:09audacious
11:11little man
11:12fell by Popescu
11:18and Luis Figo is over the free kick
11:20you see we are in
11:22single figures
11:23in terms of seconds
11:24he's got to get on with this
11:25he may not be aware
11:27but if he doesn't take it quickly
11:28he won't get to take it at all
11:37Figo's free kick
11:38oh yes
11:41it's Costinha
11:42and it's the quarter finals for Portugal
11:46it is astonishing
11:5194 minutes of nothing
11:54and then one decisive moment
11:57from one young man
11:59who is playing his first ever tournament game
12:10great ball by Figo
12:12and he just left his marker
12:14I think it was Petra
12:17got in front of Stellar
12:21once he's arrived there
12:23it's a clean
12:26contact
12:28and a fantastic finish
12:30to a very ordinary game
12:36Rui Costa is no longer involved in the game
12:39but he is involved with a nation
12:41who are within seconds
12:43of being quarter finalists
12:45as they were four years ago
12:47in the European Championships
12:49and Romania are in big big trouble now
12:52they have their points
12:53they're not out yet
12:54but they are vulnerable
12:57and they have
12:58well they have no time left
13:01this is like a car running on an empty tank
13:03there is nothing showing
13:05and now it is all over
13:07England are playing for second place now
13:10in Group A
13:11Portugal have become
13:13the fourth confirmed quarter finalists
13:15only four more spaces remain
13:17Romania can conceivably fill one of those
13:20but it is Costinha's goal
13:23which has counted for so much for Portugal
13:26it is ended here
13:28Romania nil
13:29Portugal one
13:30but it is a huge
13:31and in the UK
13:31there is only a few
13:31you
