Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a forceful message on Canada’s economic independence, declaring that the country’s days of relying heavily on the United States are over. Carney vowed to strengthen Canada using Canadian steel, aluminum, lumber and workers while removing internal trade barriers and accelerating major infrastructure projects. He highlighted 14 nation-building initiatives supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs and billions in investment. Carney also emphasized energy development and sovereignty, signaling a tougher stance on trade relations with the Trump administration as Canada seeks greater economic self-reliance.

00:00Canada's new government is right there with you, inspired by hard-working, always-caring
00:07Canadians.
00:08From now on, for example, with our new Buy Canadian policy, when the federal government
00:15spends, we will select Canadian suppliers by default.
00:26The days of our military sending 70 cents of every dollar to the United States are over.
00:43We are going to build Canada strong with Canada steel, Canadian aluminum, Canadian lumber,
00:51more Canadian workers.
01:02And we will do it first in our communities by building affordable, accessible and durable,
01:16We count 800 new hospitals, transport infrastructures in common, recreative installations and arts
01:24centers.
01:42We are building big things again by removing all federal barriers to internal trade and
01:50fast-tracking projects that will connect, diversify and propel our great country.
01:59We've already announced 14 nation-building initiatives supporting over half a million jobs and over
02:06$100 billion in new investment.
02:13We're realizing Canada's full potential, our full potential in clean and conventional energy
02:19to power Canadian homes, Canadian businesses and Canadian sovereignty.
02:32And we're using those resources to ensure affordable energy for Canadians today and a competitive economy
02:39for our kids tomorrow.
02:43We are creating, we're creating new trade corridors, from the Mackenzie Valley to Contrecoeur to Churchill,
02:53to make Canada more connected, more independent and more prosperous.
03:02And there's going to be a lot of trade going through those corridors because we have struck 20 new economic
03:08and
03:08security partnerships on four continents in just a year.
03:22We are on track.
03:24We are on track to double our non-U.S. exports over the next decade.
03:30That is $300 billion.
03:33$300 billion in new orders for Canadian resources, Canadian goods, Canadian expertise.
03:41And at the same time, our new defence industrial strategy will catalyze half a trillion dollars of investment
03:48to build Canadian industry from aerospace to AI, creating over 125,000 new jobs in the process.
04:04But we've started right.
04:06We've just implemented the largest pay increase for the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces.
04:14That's right.
04:18We've implemented that increase so that their compensation matches the weight of their responsibilities.
04:25And Canadians.
04:27Young Canadians are already responding to the call to serve.
04:30Recruitment is up 13% since last June.
04:40From the coalition of the willing to defend Ukraine, to work – we will not rest – to working with
04:53Nordic countries and the UK to protect our Arctic, we are defending Canada and Canadian values with reliable partners.
05:14It's a more dangerous and divided world.
05:16That's the reality.
05:17So we are no longer relying just on the strength of our values.
05:22We are also building the value of our strength.
05:29And as we do, we're reviving the ambitious spirit that built Canada.
05:39Canada.
05:40Our country, our country was forged by Indigenous peoples and voyageurs who mapped this continent.
05:51Think about it.
05:52They mapped this continent and they built vast trading networks from coast to coast to coast before the Americans had
05:59even left St. Louis.
06:01Thank you so much.
06:05Thank you very much.
06:08Hello, again.
06:11To the end of World War II, Canadians tried to establish big things.
06:20To build new units for hundreds of thousands of old soldiers coming back to the country.
06:26Construire de nouvelles universités pour lancer de nouvelles carrières.
06:34Reliez notre territoire grâce à la voie maritime de Saint-Laurent et à la Transcanadienne.
06:40Et, avec Expo 67, inspirez le monde entier.
06:55My friends, we used to explore in this country.
07:00Now, we're charting new courses again.
07:04We used to build in this country.
07:06Now, we are building big, building fast, building bold again.
07:12We used to take risks in this country.
07:18And now, we're going to the moon.
07:36Just the other day, speaking from integrity deep in space, Canada's astronaut, Jeremy Hansen.
07:53Jeremy Hansen advised us that, as a country, we have to be willing to take risks.
08:03Recognize that sometimes we will have setbacks, but push through them and, in his words,
08:11ultimately know that we are going to persist and we will win.
08:24Yes, a united, ambitious and confident Canada is once again taking risks to build a Canada that works for all.
08:35Now, let me put that in context.
08:39About a year ago, I received a letter from an old friend, Bob Zettel, who wrote, and I quote,
08:46Right now, everyone sees the main threat as the Trump tariffs.
08:52But the challenge, the challenge is greater.
08:58The challenge will be, as it's always been, to foster unity and the common good.
09:04End quote.
09:06Bob's right.
09:07Canadians are being called to serve, but not against something.
09:12For something.
09:13For each other.
09:16And that is why you're here.
09:24Because you believe, like I believe, that Canada is only strong when it works for everyone.
09:39That's our objective.
09:42And that's our heritage.
09:45After all, Canada is a nation forged through accommodation, not assimilation.
09:52Through partnership, not domination.
09:55The founding insight of our country is that unity does not require uniformity.
10:02This is neither a myth nor a miracle, but a series of choices made imperfectly across generations.
10:17Pragmatic decisions that have become a moral conviction.
10:21That our differences are a strength to be nurtured, not a risk to be managed.
10:35And so, each generation has chosen to widen the circle.
10:42And we Liberals stand in that tradition.
