00:00Yesterday, in the latest salvo in his trade war,
00:28President Trump again imposed unjustified tariffs on our nation
00:33in violation of our existing trade agreements.
00:38This time, he targeted the auto industry and the more than 500,000
00:43hard-working, dedicated Canadians that that industry supports across our country.
00:50Now, the President of the United States is trying to
00:54fundamentally restructure his economy,
01:00it means our economy, and it means the global economy as well.
01:04And I understand and respect his goal to support American workers,
01:11but I disagree with him that this is how to help.
01:16With time, it will become apparent that these actions will end up hurting
01:19American workers and American consumers.
01:25I reject any attempts to weaken Canada, to wear us down, to break us
01:33so that America can own us. That will never happen.
01:38And our response to these latest tariffs is to fight, is to protect,
01:45and to build. We will fight the U.S. tariffs with retaliatory trade actions
01:52of our own that will have maximum impact in the
01:55United States and minimum impacts here in Canada.
02:00We will protect our workers and our industries during
02:05this difficult period. But above all, we will build a new
02:11Canadian economy. We will build Canada Strong. The federal government will do
02:19everything in its power to protect Canadian workers and businesses.
02:24We will be here for you every step of the way.
02:29In the past week, my government committed to use
02:32every dollar collected from our retaliatory tariffs
02:36to protect our workers. Last night, the President of the United States reached
02:41out to schedule a call. I appreciate this opportunity to discuss
02:46how we can protect our workers.
