Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney fired back at what he called “unjustified, unprovoked tariffs” from the United States, pledging stronger support for Canadian workers and businesses. Carney said Ottawa is “stepping up” with sustained financial backing to help companies retool, retrain, diversify and build. He highlighted Team Canada Strong, a government initiative aimed at recruiting, training and hiring up to 100,000 skilled trades workers, while expanding union training programs nationwide. His remarks signal Canada’s determination to protect jobs amid ongoing U.S. trade pressure.

00:00And central to that plan is expanding union training programs right across the country.
00:06And that's why, in the face of unjustified, unprovoked tariffs from the United States,
00:11we're stepping up with large, sustained financial support to protect our workers and our businesses.
00:19Today is Labour Day.
00:21For many Canadians, that means a well-earned day off.
00:24For all of us, it's a chance to celebrate the proud history of organized labour in Canada.
00:30Labour unions have made our economy stronger and our country fairer.
00:34They've fought for better pay, safer job sites, pensions, benefits, paid leave.
00:40They've even defended the weekend.
00:42They've helped share prosperity amongst the many.
00:46Because unions have always understood something fundamental.
00:49It's not just what we build, it's how we build.
00:53And Canada has always been a nation of builders.
00:57From the Canadian Pacific Railway to the St. Lawrence Seaway to Confederation Bridge.
01:03And today, in the face of a global rupture, Canada's building big again.
01:09New ports, mines, energy and trade corridors.
01:13Millions more affordable homes, new roads, railways and airports.
01:17And we're building it all in solidarity with workers.
01:21That's why the government has launched the Team Canada Strong.
01:25To recruit, train and hire up to 100,000 skilled trades workers.
01:31And central to that plan is expanding union training programs right across the country.
01:37And that's why, in the face of unjustified, unprovoked tariffs from the United States, we're stepping up.
01:44With large, sustained financial support to protect our workers and our businesses.
01:49And help them to retool, retrain, diversify and build.
01:54That's another thing unions have always understood.
01:58When we look out for each other.
02:00When we work together.
02:02When we're united.
02:04There's nothing the Canadian workers can't do.
02:07So happy Labor Day, Canada.
02:11Yes, thank you.
02:11And great idea, Mr. Chairman.
02:13Thank you, Mr. Secretary, for being here today.
02:15Last year, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the United States saw a 5.5% decline in
02:24international visitors.
02:25We were the only major economy to see any decline.
02:29In my home state of New Hampshire, tourism is the second largest industry, both by revenue and it supports 70
02:36,000 jobs.
02:36Canada has long been our largest share of foreign visitors, but last year we saw a 30% drop in
02:44Canadian tourism.
02:45Largely due to the loss of trust and goodwill because of this administration's rhetoric around Canada.
02:53Secretary Letnik, last week you said about Canada's economic strategy, and I quote, they suck.
03:00I believe your spokesperson then said this was about Canada's economy leeching off of the U.S.
03:07How does insulting our closest ally and neighbor help the businesses in my state of New Hampshire, and states all
03:15across this country,
03:16who are hurting because of the loss of Canadian business and tourism?
03:24Canada's economy leans on the 30, the incredible $30 trillion economy of America.
03:32There's no doubt about that, Mr. Secretary, but insulting our closest ally and neighbor who provides a lot of business.
03:40We have a lot of businesses in New Hampshire, small businesses who work on both sides of the border.
03:45We have all those Canadian visitors who are not coming because of your comments and comments by the administration.
03:53How does that help our economy?
03:55It is outrageous that Canada will not put U.S. spirits on the shelf.
04:02It is insulting.
04:03It is.
04:05And disrespectful to America that they won't even put...
04:07Absolutely.
04:07And my husband has an interest in a company that has American spirits.
04:13And they won't do it because of the insults from this president and comments like yours.
04:20So I want to go on to another question.
04:23But can I have just one small comment, which is dairy is treated so badly, and your state cares about
04:29dairy,
04:29and we are trying desperately to get them to live to the deal that they have on USMCA
04:36and stop treating our dairy farmers so poorly, and your state cares about that.
04:41And we are fighting for that.
04:43We do.
04:44But we are not going to get agreement when we keep insulting people.
04:50When we have allies and partners, we should try and work with them, not insult them.
04:55And I find your rhetoric insulting to the people in my state who are working so hard to try and
05:02ensure that they can do business.
