Rep. Jamie Raskin endorsed Abdul El-Sayed ahead of the midterms, urging Michigan voters to unite across ideological lines to defend democracy and defeat what he described as autocrats, plutocrats, theocrats and kleptocrats. Speaking to a fired-up crowd, Raskin framed progressivism around protecting the environment, Constitution, Bill of Rights and Social Security. He also praised young activists involved in Democracy Summer and encouraged them to engage in voting and civic participation. Raskin’s endorsement adds momentum to El-Sayed’s campaign as Democrats seek to challenge Republicans in Michigan.

00:00I've spent the last three days in Michigan, starting in Traverse City and up the peninsula with the next congressman
00:07from the 1st District, Callie Barr.
00:11Yesterday I was with our wonderful nominee, the next congressman from the 4th District, Sean McCann, in beautiful Saugatuck.
00:21And I realize you guys have it all going on here. You've got the sunshine, you've got the beautiful beaches
00:28on Lake Michigan, you've got the weather, you've got the culture.
00:33So my question for you is, why does Mike Rogers live in Florida?
00:42In this momentous election, I came here to endorse Abdul Sayed for the United States Senate.
00:52And we need Abdul in the Senate because he's an epidemiologist, he's a renowned public health expert,
01:00he's the former director of the Department of Health and Human Services and Veterans Services of Wayne County, Michigan.
01:07He's the public health authority that we need to lead the fight against all of the special interests to pass
01:14Medicare for all in America,
01:16so health care will be a basic right for all citizens and not a high-priced luxury good for the
01:23wealthy.
01:26Abdul, we're counting when we make it happen.
01:30We're spending more on health care than any country on earth, $15,000 per person,
01:36double what they're spending in Canada or the UK, other countries, they're getting much better outcomes than we are.
01:43We are being outpaced on all of the critical measurements by other countries, other industrialized countries,
01:52including infant mortality, maternal mortality, life expectancy, chronic illness, you name it.
02:00We need Abdul, the Health and Human Services Director who started out right here locally in Wayne County, Michigan,
02:08to stand up for the public health against Trump's Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, okay?
02:16We need a real doctor in Congress because the Trump administration has a staph infection, okay?
02:25Do we have any medical students or pre-med students here?
02:29Any? Maybe they're not back in yet.
02:31We've got, all right, we've got a few.
02:34Well, who do you want leading public health policy in America?
02:37A graduate of the University of Michigan, the University of Michigan Med School,
02:42the Columbia Med School, who got lead out of Detroit public schools
02:46and got free eyeglasses to all kids in Detroit who needed them,
02:51or a guy who picked up a dead bear cub that had been hit by a car on the highway
02:58in upstate New York
02:59to bring it home and skin it for a family roadkill dinner, okay?
03:05Do you want a guy who's worked effectively right here in Michigan
03:09to immunize the population against all of the killer diseases,
03:14or a guy, the Secretary of Health and Human Services in Washington,
03:18whose deranged conspiracy theories are contributing to a shocking resurgence of measles from Texas to Pennsylvania?
03:27It's clear that we need Abdul.
03:30I'm proud to be a Democrat.
03:32We are a big tent party because we've got a lot of people in it,
03:36and more and more every single day.
03:38I want to thank my friend Haley Stevens for running a strong, vigorous campaign
03:44and then strongly endorsing Abdul for the U.S. Senate.
03:48And congratulations on your engagement.
03:53You know, I had a Republican colleague who said to me,
03:55the problem with you, Raskin, you're not a bad guy, but the problem with you is you're a liberal.
04:00And I said, you're damn right I'm a liberal.
04:01The heart of that word is liberty.
04:03And I'm a progressive because the heart of that word is progress.
04:06But my favorite thing to call myself today is a conservative
04:10because I want to conserve the land, the air, the water, the climate system,
04:15the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, Social Security, Medicare, Medicare,
04:20between the Air Act and the Water Act, the Federal Labor Standards Act,
04:24the National Labor Relations Act.
04:26Everything that this party of nihilists and authoritarians and oligarchs wants to destroy
04:32is everything that we are going to defend together.
04:35The liberals, the progressives, and the conservatives are going to defeat
04:39the autocrats, the plutocrats, the theocrats, and the kleptocrats in Michigan.
04:45And of course, I know I know.
04:50So, I've got a slogan for you, Michigan.
04:55I've got a slogan for you in this momentous campaign where everything is on the line.
04:59And we teach it to the young people in Democracy Summer.
05:03We've got some Democracy Summer fellow kids here.
05:06Thank you for joining us today.
05:08Look, it's simple.
05:10Teach the young people this.
05:13Everything that you need to know about voting
05:16is everything you need to know about driving.
05:19If you want to go forward, you put it in D.
05:23If you want to go backwards, you put it in R.
05:26That's all you need to understand.
