00:07In Conakry, rescue teams continue searching after the collapse of the Dar es Salaam land
00:12field which has killed at least 30 people. In the Democratic Republic of Congo,
00:20Kinshasa and the M23 group are moving towards a peace deal with a roadmap and a ceasefire
00:25monitoring mechanism. Drought, conflict and foreign aid funding are worsening the situation
00:32in Somalia where millions of people urgently need assistance.
00:40Hello and welcome to Africa News Today. In Guinea, the search continues after the Dar es
00:46Salaam landfill collapsed in Conakry. At least 30 people died when heavy rains triggered a
00:52massive waste collapse. Authorities have pledged to evacuate families still living around
00:58the site which was already due to close. This is the aftermath in Guinea's capital,
01:06Conakry, of when part of a landfill fell onto neighbouring homes following heavy rains.
01:13Although emergency crews have arrived at the scene, the incident claimed 30 lives and has
01:18left residents reeling. At around 3 or 2 a.m. we heard something sliding, a scream outside.
01:29Everyone was shouting, I called to my wife, we can't stay in the house. People are screaming
01:34outside, let's go out. When we stepped outside, not even two or three minutes had passed.
01:44In recent days, the government had ordered the eviction of people near the site due to concerns
01:49of a collapse. Some residents blamed the state for the accident. We, the young people of Dar es
01:55Salaam, did everything we could to prevent this. But it didn't stop the landslide from happening,
02:00because we organised sit-ins, we organised sacrifices, we invited the officials from the relevant departments,
02:05but they didn't take it seriously. So, that's why today, with this landslide, I blame the state.
02:12Because it didn't take the necessary action to have the dump closed, and yet they promised us that it's been
02:17a year now.
02:21One of the country's main opposition figures, former Prime Minister Selou Del Indiello,
02:26called for an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the incident.
02:35A new step towards peace in eastern DRC, Kinshasa and the M23 have adopted a roadmap for further talks with
02:43a ceasefire monitoring mechanism, also planned.
02:53The democratic republic of Congo and the M23 rebel group have agreed on a roadmap for peace negotiations in a
03:01fresh step towards implementing the Doha peace framework.
03:04The agreement was reached during talks in Switzerland from August 17 to 21st, involving representatives from both sides and international
03:13partners.
03:14The roadmap sets out the next stages and a timetable for negotiations, while the parties also agreed on a common
03:21system for reporting alleged ceasefire violations.
03:24A fast ceasefire verification mission is due to take place in Menembe, in South Kivu.
03:31The United States welcomed the progress, with Washington reaffirming its support for peace efforts in eastern Congo and the wider
03:38Great Lake region.
03:40But analysts remain cautious, warning that several key agreements are still unsigned and that the process could be long and
03:46difficult.
03:47The conflict in eastern Congo has deep roots in ethnic tensions, regional rivalries and armed groups, with the latest crisis
03:55intensifying after M23 emerged in 2012 and later resumed its offensive in 2021.
04:01The rebels have since seized large areas of North and South Kivu, fueling a wider regional crisis.
04:09As the Ebola outbreak continues in the DRC, Pope Leo XIV is calling for greater international action.
04:16Speaking from the Vatican, he urged the international community to increase its support for those affected while stressing the importance
04:24of involving local communities in prevention efforts.
05:24'or à Zamboye.
06:002016.
06:04En Somalia, drought is worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis.
06:09According to the World Food Programme, 6 million people are facing acute food insecurity, including nearly 2 million in emergency
06:17conditions.
06:18A combination of climate shocks, insecurity and declining international funding is continuing to worsen the situation in the Horn of
06:25Africa.
06:26Somalia has long been on the front line of the climate crisis.
06:31Years of insufficient rainfall have led to water shortages, crop failure and a loss of livestock.
06:37Decades of civil war have displaced millions, compounding the humanitarian crisis.
06:43Now, global funding cuts and rising prices due to the U.S.-Iran war have left some 6 million people facing
06:51crisis levels of hunger, about a third of the population.
06:56Almost 2 million children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition.
07:02Cuts to humanitarian aid have already forced more than 200 health and nutrition facilities to close, the United Nations Children's
07:12Fund UNICEF said last week, warning that the number could triple.
07:17Dismantling aid is a decision to pay more later, the agency said, in security, lost development and in children's lives.
07:27Tensions are also rising between Chad and Sudan.
07:31N'Djamena has accused the Sudanese army of carrying out an air operation inside Chadian territory involving drones and aircraft that
07:39reportedly attacked a convoy of vehicles arriving from Libya.
07:43Chad denounces a violation of its sovereignty as the war spills further into the region.
07:49Military authorities in Chad have accused Sudan of launching drone strikes against a convoy inside Chadian territory.
07:57The attack took place on Thursday and reportedly targeted dozens of vehicles in East Enadi province, more than 100 kilometers
08:06from the border with Sudan.
08:08The incident is raising fears that the war in Sudan could escalate regional tensions.
08:15Sudan has previously accused Chad of supporting the paramilitary rapid support forces who have been fighting the Sudanese army for
08:23control of the country since April 2023.
08:27Khartoum says N'Djamena allows fighters and military supplies to transit through Chad.
08:34Chad has placed military units on high alert and warned warring parties in Sudan against crossing its frontier,
08:41saying it reserves the right to defend its territory.
08:47And as always on African news today, here are some key dates to remember.

09:00August for the 76th session of the regional committee.
09:03The meeting will focus on new policies and strategies aimed at strengthening healthcare systems and improving access to medical services
09:11across the continent.
