00:00In 30 years I have never once had a kitchen drain clog up on me, nor come into my kitchen
00:06to that sour foul smell rising up out of the sink that so many folks just live with.
00:11And it is not luck, and it is not good pipes, it is one simple thing I do, a plain
00:18flush
00:18that costs pennies and takes but a few minutes, done regular.
00:23For here is the truth of a drain, near everyone waits until it is clogged and stinking to
00:28do anything, and by then it is a hard job or a costly plumber when a little regular care
00:34would have meant it never clogged nor stank at all.
00:37So today I am going to show you that simple old way to keep a kitchen drain running free
00:43and smelling sweet for years, and to freshen a slow, smelly one, all with plain things
00:49from your cupboard.
00:50Let me show you.
00:51Here is the thing to understand first, for it tells you why a drain goes bad and why this
00:56works.
00:57A kitchen drain does not clog all at once, it clogs slow over months and years as the
01:04grease from your cooking and your dish water goes down warm and liquid and then cools and
01:09hardens on the inside of the pipe, and the bits of food and scraps catch and stick in
01:14that hardening grease, and it builds up thicker and thicker, narrowing the pipe, slowing the
01:20water, until one day it clogs entirely.
01:23And that same greasy build up sitting there rotting is what makes the foul smell.
01:28So the whole secret to a good drain is to not let that grease build up and harden in the
01:34first place.
01:40And the plain things that melt grease and flush it and sweeten the pipe are hot water, vinegar,
01:47salt, and baking soda, which you all have.
01:51Now let me give you the way of it.
01:53Quick word before we go further.

02:20Now to the drain.
02:21My grandmother kept a sweet running drain her whole life, and never once, that I recall,
02:27had a plumber to the house for a blocked pipe.
02:29And she did it by the plainest habit, a regular flush she gave the drain the way you might
02:35sweep a floor before it ever needed it.
02:37She used to say that keeping is easier than mending, that an ounce of care spares a pound
02:43of trouble, and that the woman who tends a thing before it breaks never has to fix it
02:48after.
02:48And a drain is the very picture of that wisdom, for the whole trouble of it is that folk only
02:54think of it once it has already gone wrong.
02:57So here is her kind of care, the regular flush.
03:00You take a pot, and into it you put about equal parts water and white vinegar, say a pint
03:06of each, a good two cups of each, enough to make a proper flush.
03:10And to that you add a couple of tablespoons of plain salt, and you set that on the stove
03:15and heat it up good and hot, bring it near to a boil, for the heat is a great part
03:20of
03:20what does the work.
03:22Here is why each thing is in there.
03:24The hot water and the heat melt the hardened grease, softening it so it will flow.
03:29The vinegar, which is a mild acid, cuts through the grease and the build up and freshens the
03:34pipe, and it works all the better hot.
03:37And the salt gives a bit of scour and helps keep the pipe clean and sweet and free of
03:42the sour smell.
03:43So you heat that vinegar and salt water up hot, then, and this is a particular little
03:49step that matters, you take it off the heat first, off the flame, and then you add a couple
03:54of drops of dish soap, and a couple of tablespoons of baking soda, and give it a gentle stir.
04:00You add these off the heat because the soap and the soda will foam, and you do not want
04:05it boiling over on the stove.
04:06The dish soap is a grease cutter, and it melts the greasy build up like sun melts snow, which
04:13is just what a greasy drain wants.
04:15And the baking soda freshens and helps scour and sweetens the pipe.
04:19So now you have your whole flush, hot vinegar and salt water, with a little soap and soda
04:26stirred in, every bit of it aimed at melting grease and flushing it and leaving the pipe
04:31sweet.
04:32Now you pour that whole hot flush straight down the drain, right down into it, and you
04:38will often see the water in the sink drop and run freer as it goes, as the hot grease
04:43cutting flush melts and loosens the build up in the pipe.
04:47Let it sit and work a moment as it runs through.
04:50And then, once it has gone down, you follow it with a good strong stream of hot water from
04:56the tap, running it hard a good while, for that strong flow flushes all the loosened grease
05:02and the melted build up and the freed bits of food on down and away out of the pipe.
05:08The flush melts and loosens the grease.
05:11The strong water flow carries it away.
05:13And when you are done, your drain runs free and clear and smells clean and fresh, and
05:19you have a sweet kitchen sink again.
05:22Now here is the heart of it, the thing that makes the difference between my 30 years of
05:28good drains and the folk who fight a clog every year.
05:31You do this regular, as a habit, before there is ever a problem.
05:36Not once the drain has clogged and stunk, but every so often, while it is still running fine.
05:42Once a week, or once a fortnight, or once a month, as your kitchen needs, you give the
05:47drain this flush.
05:49And because you never let the grease build up and harden, it never clogs and never smells,
05:54ever, for you are always melting it and flushing it away while it is still thin.
06:00That is the whole of it, keeping, not mending.
06:04A few minutes and a few pennies now and then, and you simply never have the trouble at all.
06:10It is the plainest wisdom there is.
06:12And yet near everyone waits until the drain is ruined to think of it.
06:16And a few more plain habits go right alongside the flush, to keep the grease out of the pipe
06:23in the first place.
06:24For the less grease goes down, the less there is ever to melt.
06:29The first and biggest, do not pour grease and fat down the drain.
06:34When you have hot bacon grease or fat from a pan, do not pour it down the sink where it
06:40will cool and harden and clog.
06:41But pour it into an old tin or jar to cool, and throw it out with the rubbish, or keep
06:47it for the birds or for cooking.
06:50That one habit alone spares your drain most of its trouble.
06:54And catch your food scraps before they go down.
06:57Keep a little strainer or catcher over the drain hole to catch the bits of food and scraps,
07:03and let only the water through, and empty it into the scrap bucket.
07:07Grease kept out of the pipe, and scraps caught at the hole, and there is little left to ever
07:13clog it, and your regular flush keeps the rest sweet.
07:18Now I must give you the one honest word I always owe you, so you know the true reach of
07:24this,
07:24and are not disappointed.
07:26This flush is a wonderful thing for keeping a good drain good, and for freshening and clearing
07:32a slow, smelly, part-greased drain.
07:35But I will be straight with you.
07:37If a drain is already fully clogged, completely blocked, and standing full of water that will
07:43not go down at all, this flush alone is likely not enough to clear a solid blockage.
07:50A true full clog wants more.
07:53It wants a plunger worked over the drain.
07:55Or a drain snake, one of those long coils you feed down the pipe to break up and pull
08:02out the blockage, which I have shown you for the toilet, and which works for the sink drain
08:07too.
08:08And if it is truly and badly blocked, and none of that clears it, then that is the time
08:13to call someone who knows the work.
08:15And no shame in it, for a bad blockage deep in the pipes is beyond a home flush.
08:21So know the difference.
08:23This flush is for keeping a drain clear and for freshening a slow one, and it is grand
08:29at that.
08:29A solid clog wants the plunger or the snake, or at the worst, a plumber.
08:35I tell you plainly, so you use the right tool for the trouble you have.
08:40And one rule of safety, plain and firm, as I always give.
08:45Never pour bleach down a drain after this flush.
08:49Nor pour bleach and vinegar down together, nor use the one soon after the other.
08:56For bleach and the vinegar's acid together make a poison gas that has truly harmed folk.
09:03Many a person keeps a bottle of bleach for the drains.
09:07If you do, keep it well away from your vinegar.
09:10And never let the two meet in the pipe or the sink.
09:14Keep to the vinegar and salt and soda I have given you, all safe together, and you have
09:21nothing to fear.
09:23Now think a moment about why we came to believe that a drain is a thing you only deal with
09:29once it has failed.
09:30That you pour a harsh, costly chemical down it when it clogs, or call an expensive plumber.
09:37When a few pennies of vinegar and salt, done regular, would have meant it never clogged at
09:42all.
09:43It is worse than a plot, for no one had to arrange it.
09:47There is a great fortune in selling harsh drain chemicals for a clog and in the plumber's call,
09:54and none at all in teaching you that a hot vinegar flush now and then keeps a drain running
10:01sweet for thirty years for nothing.
10:03So the old plain wisdom that keeping is easier than mending, and a drain wants tending before
10:10it breaks, which every grandmother had by heart, just stopped being handed down, because no one
10:17profits by your drain never going wrong.
10:21My grandmother never had a plumber to a blocked pipe in her life.
10:25And somewhere between her kitchen and ours, we were taught that a drain is a thing you
10:31fix when it fails, rather than ten so it never does.
10:36The mending of it, or rather the never needing to mend of it, is a hot vinegar flush and a
10:42good habit.
10:44You heat your vinegar and salt water hot, stir in your soap and soda off the heat, pour it
10:50down the drain and follow it with a strong stream of hot water, and you do it regular
10:56before ever there is a problem.
10:59And you keep the grease out of the pipe and catch your scraps at the hole.
11:03And your drain runs free and smells sweet for years and years.
11:08And you never fight a clog, nor call a plumber, nor breathe that foul smell at all.
11:15That is how it comes home, one hot flush, one good habit at a time.
11:21The keeping of your own drains and your own household back in your own hands.
11:28So here is what I would ask of you.
11:31This week, give your kitchen drain this hot flush, even if it is running fine, and then
11:37take up the habit of doing it regular.
11:39And then come back over the weeks and tell me in the comments how your drain runs and
11:45smells.
11:46For I do love to hear of trouble headed off before it ever starts.
11:51And tell me too, while you are there, your county and the age of your house.
11:56For the old houses have the old pipes that want this care the most.
12:01And the water and the plumbing differ so from place to place.

13:07You heap your vinegar and salt hot.
13:10Stir in the soap and soda of the flame.
13:12Pour it down the drain and chase it with a strong stream of hot water.
13:18And you take up the habit of doing it regular before ever a problem comes.
13:24And you keep your grease out of the pipe and catch your scraps at the hole.
13:29And you will understand, as my grandmother did at her own sink, that keeping is easier
13:35than mending.
13:36That a drain wants tending before it breaks and not fixing after.
13:40And that the whole foul, costly trouble of a clogged and stinking drain was always the
13:47trouble of not tending it.
13:49And is spared entirely for a few pennies and a few minutes done regular.
13:55The household kept the plain old way is the one that remembers how the old women kept every
14:01drain running free and sweet for a lifetime with a hot vinegar flush and a good habit.
14:07And that is a thing we are only just starting to remember.
