00:51:41Quite a drive from ninth to second. How did you do that, and what did you make of this experience
00:51:47today?
00:51:48I feel it's fitting that an American won, right?
00:51:51But no, we gave it our best shot. We did great. I feel like it's good to bounce back from
00:51:58last week,
00:51:59and Markham obviously starting up front and not quite executing. Just so happy.
00:52:05Awesome event. We got the capital in the background. This is only something you could dream of.
00:52:11Congratulations. Well done. Christian Lundgaard finishes second, Georgia.
00:52:15Willpower is certainly laying down some stats right now. It's his third podium in a row,
00:52:19and his third podium on new street courses this year alone, but you've really had to work for it.
00:52:24It's no secret that this weekend has been full of ups and downs, and you made something out of it.
00:52:29What really made the difference?
00:52:30Yeah, good team, good car, good stops, strategy, made moves on the track.
00:52:35So awesome to see Carl win this race. Marcus last week, two of us on the podium.
00:52:42It's such an epic event, man. Look back there. I just could never dream of being in a place like
00:52:48this,
00:52:48racing in a place like this when I started all those years ago in Toowoomba. So, yeah, Stokes, man.
00:52:56Stokes. I really wanted to get on the podium. Obviously, a win would be phenomenal,
00:52:59but one of our team cars won. So we're coming, man. We're becoming the team to beat.
00:53:06And Willpower has got two races left to do it this season.
00:53:09Well, three with the doubleheader in Milwaukee coming up next, guys.
00:53:11But how about that? You can feel the emotion down here.
00:53:17Well, an incredibly happy podium after an absolutely brilliant day.

00:53:26Kyle Kirkwood is the winner of the Freedom 250. The post race is coming right up.

00:53:47as he celebrates and everyone around the country and here in our nation's capital,
00:53:53our president, watching the entire race, enjoying along with you.
00:53:56And thank you for staying with us live on Fox from early today.
00:53:59Danica Patrick, Chris Myers, our post-race thoughts.
00:54:02We'll get you out to the podium in just a moment.
00:54:04Kirkwood was outstanding, led all but 19 laps.
00:54:08Commanding win today. Andretti's just so strong.
00:54:11Last weekend, Marcus Erickson won.
00:54:13They're really good on street courses, but when it's bumpy, they're even better.
00:54:18So, I mentioned Erickson before the race, and he finished fourth and 21st.
00:54:23What a strong team. What a strong performance by Kirkwood, though.
00:54:25Didn't put a wheel wrong, which tested a lot of drivers today, but he was perfect.
00:54:29And Alex Pillow came in as the favorite.
00:54:31Your reigning champ just had a rough afternoon and was not in the picture.
00:54:35Tried to battle back.
00:54:36As you get a look at where we are in the district,
00:54:39among the National Mall and the Capitol building just behind us.
00:54:43How about the kind of race it was for others?
00:54:45And nice to see some people battling at the end, even though Kirkwood seemed to be in control.
00:54:49Right. Well, McLaughlin gave him a run for it at the end there and, unfortunately, put himself in the wall.
00:54:54And we did see that.
00:54:56At the beginning, there were some cautions.
00:54:57It looked like maybe strategy was going to play a role.
00:55:00But that converged, and what really came through was that drivers had to stay clean and not make mistakes.
00:55:05We saw that there was mistakes by Maloukas earlier, clipping the wall, putting himself out.
00:55:09We saw, as the boys said, Alex Pillow was human today.
00:55:13He actually made some mistakes.
00:55:15So, look, it was a very exciting race.
00:55:17The drivers were incredibly tested.
00:55:19But Kirkwood was absolutely on point.
00:55:22Didn't make a mistake.
00:55:24Yeah, Alex Pillow had a rough day today.
00:55:26And what's great about this, though, is that it's going to make it exciting for the championship.
00:55:29Just a couple to go.
00:55:30And Kirkwood is the only one that can take it from him.
00:55:32Yeah, Kirkwood closed to some 91 points.
00:55:35It was the largest lead with four races to go.
00:55:37There are three in the IndyCar season.
00:55:39It's Pillow from Pip Problems to try to battle back.
00:55:43And just this event, and you heard him say, fitting that an American, as we take a look at the
00:55:48standings here,
00:55:49and again, this race counts just like all the others.
00:55:51So important, though, because it's the Freedom 250.
00:55:53And a fitting that Kirkwood said, if you can't win the Indy 500, you'll want to win this race.
00:55:59So before we go any further and get to the podium, let's hear from Alex Pillow.
00:56:06Alex, you had a lot of things going on, I guess.
00:56:08Essentially three things, two on pit lane, and then on the track.
00:56:11What do you make of this day?
00:56:12Anything you could have done differently?
00:56:15Yeah, a lot.
00:56:16We could have done a lot differently.
00:56:18I mean, it hurts, man.
00:56:19It hurts.
00:56:20It was one of those races that I really want to do very good.
00:56:25I wanted to get that win, so it kind of hurts a lot that we just had this bad of
00:56:30a day.
00:56:31But it's okay.
00:56:32Things happen.
00:56:33I'm at least kind of happy that everything happened at the same day instead of spreading out throughout different races.
00:56:40But, yeah, we had some issues in pit lane, one my fault, one out of my control, something on the
00:56:46track.
00:56:47But then I kind of bumped a little bit the wall, and 20 laps after the rear tow lane broke,
00:56:53that's why we spun.
00:56:54So, yeah, not a good day, but it's all right.
00:56:59Things happen.
00:56:59Still plus 91, though, in the championship, looking for number four in a row in five in six years.
00:57:05All right.
00:57:05Thank you very much.
00:57:06And nice of him.
00:57:07There's the celebrating team.
00:57:08Kirkwood, by the way, six.
00:57:10This is his seventh career win.
00:57:11Six of those have come on street courses.
00:57:14And we said on the pre-race show, you, Danica, along with Elio Castro Davis, he was one of the
00:57:19drivers to watch.
00:57:20And, obviously, he showed that where he started up front.
00:57:23Absolutely.
00:57:23And he showed us today at the second biggest race of the year.
00:57:28But, my goodness, there was definitely some elements about the day that felt like it was one of the biggest.
00:57:32To see the flyovers that we had, the pre-race that we had, the president of the United States, which
00:57:38he is still here.
00:57:39I can see the beast out of the corner of my eye right here.
00:57:42So, stayed for the whole thing.
00:57:44This was an exciting weekend.
00:57:46Amazing, amazing track.
00:57:48And, gosh, I hope we come back just like everybody else.
00:57:51Well, you see the trophy.
00:57:52This is a once-in-a-lifetime trophy because there'll never be another 250 here.
00:57:56There might be more races in and around Washington, D.C.
00:57:58As you see the drivers gathering for the podium.
00:58:00And you mentioned it.
00:58:01I mean, the name Andretti, the Andretti Global Honda.
00:58:05But, Andretti, this is a royalty in racing.
00:58:08And not only two of the three of the podium, but three of the top four finishers in this race.
00:58:12They were dialed in, and they have shown that throughout the course of handling new venues, especially street courses.
00:58:19Yeah, absolutely.
00:58:20And that's why the IndyCar series is such an exciting series because you get a mix of everything.
00:58:25You've got ovals, short ovals, street courses, permanent circuits, and it really tests the teams and tests the drivers.
00:58:31And what's really, really fun about IndyCar right now is that you don't know who's going to win.
00:58:35It's so competitive.

00:59:21I think as a driver, as a driver, you always love these memories for yourself.
00:59:27But I can't think of a better photo op at the top of a podium than the one that Kyle
00:59:31Kirkwood's going to get here with the capital in the background.
00:59:34That's a podium and a pick that they'll remember forever in the celebration.
00:59:40We're right behind that, Chris.
00:59:42We're just right.
00:59:42I hope he don't get sprayed with champagne.
00:59:44Yeah, we got to watch from turn one and a great call again by our guys in the booth.
00:59:51Obviously, riding out the successful run of Kyle Kirkwood, but wondering and waiting and see who could challenge.
00:59:58And at different moments, different drivers tried.
01:00:01But in the end, he held on and really dominated this Freedom 250.
01:00:05Dominated, and it's going to be exciting to see this end of the season and what kind of momentum is
01:00:10going to come from this to really try and take it to Alex Pillow in this championship.
01:00:14Yes, he has a big gap to close, but as we saw today, you can make a big jump if
01:00:19the other guy has a bad day.
01:00:20And I like it that Pillow was aggressive in this race, as it seems toward the end.
01:00:25You mentioned McLaughlin.
01:00:27Just everybody kind of wanted a piece, a slice of history in this race, in this place, and they were
01:00:33going for it without hesitation.
01:00:35Well, I think that the track was challenging, too, and that's a good thing.
01:00:39As a series, as viewers watching, you want to see these drivers being tested.
01:00:44These are the best in the world, and you saw that this track did that.
01:00:47With Apex's being at the wall, that caught out some drivers many times throughout the weekend.
01:00:53The bumps were a problem.
01:00:54The bumps made it really difficult.
01:00:56So I love when the track is challenging.
01:00:58I could think of a few more things as a driver to add on to make it more difficult, but
01:01:02if I was a driver out there, I would say, Danica, be quiet.
01:01:04All right, the American Bald Eagle, and that's Lincoln, by the way, a part of the ceremony and pageantry and
01:01:11patriotism for this unique, special IndyCar event.
01:01:16And I don't know if they're going to let Lincoln fly around or hand off to the winner of the
01:01:22race.
01:01:23I wonder what kind of treats they use for this.
01:01:25But, boy, that is a proud stare from not only Lincoln but from the drivers.
01:01:31You know, you finish in the top three.
01:01:33You get that podium finish in here.
01:01:35There we go.
01:01:36Seeing an eagle is always majestic whenever you're out in the wild and you see one.
01:01:39So to be up close like this here at a celebration of 250 years of this country, winning the race,
01:01:45and being able to have an eagle on your arm, Chris, another photo op coming up.
01:01:49It represents freedom for that.
01:01:51Let's get your final thoughts as we wrap up this race and soon three more, the IndyCar season.
01:01:57But it just shows you, despite the dominance of Alex Palo, the defending champion,
01:02:02how outstanding he's been, his career, and still rolling, a guy like Kyle Kirkwood can make a little history himself.
01:02:08Well, I just think that overall the whole weekend was spectacular.
01:02:13The venue was amazing.
01:02:14The event was run so well.
01:02:16The race was incredible.
01:02:18Everybody seemed thrilled.
01:02:19And I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of people coming back to visit Washington, D
01:02:24.C.
01:02:24after this visit because this is really a spectacular city.
01:02:28It is an honor to be a part of it.
