00:02Authorities have confirmed that a long-nosed fur seal has died in South Australia.
00:06The state government says it is the first detection of bird flu in a mammal on the Australian mainland.
00:12The seal was found on Wednesday in South Australia's southeast in Beachport,
00:17that's about 100 kilometres from the Victorian border.
00:20Although it was found on Wednesday, state-based testing was inconclusive,
00:24so the state government had to send samples of the seal into state for further testing,
00:29along with the seal.
00:30There was also the detection of bird flu found in a little penguin off Kangaroo Island.
00:35That's the first detection of a little penguin with bird flu in the state.
00:40And unlike other areas of Australia, like Phillip Island,
00:43South Australia currently has no plans to vaccinate little penguins.
00:47South Australia's chief vet, Sky Fruin, spoke a little earlier.
00:50She had this message for pet owners.
00:52What we've been saying from the start is for pet owners to be responsible pet owners
00:56and keep their dogs on leads when they're out in wildlife environments on the beach.
01:00And that's partly for their own protection, but also protection of our wildlife from predation
01:06or being bothered by dogs and cats.
01:09And likewise for cats, keeping your cats indoors or in enclosed outdoor environments.
01:14Anyone who sees a sick animal is being urged not to touch it and to report it to authorities.
01:19How will this believe I for these?
01:21I will pass them to Congress.
01:21We're moving now.
01:22Terrific, we're planning to take emphasis.
01:22We're looking now.
