South Australia's emerged as the centre of the country's bird flu crisis, with another seven suspected cases of the deadly H5 strain detected on the Limestone Coast. The discovery has raised fears that the disease is spreading through local bird populations, and with the poultry industry on high alert, authorities are preparing for the worst.

00:02At this jetty in Southend, authorities fear bird flu is spreading among the native species.
00:08Five greater crested terns were collected here over two days.
00:12One was dead and the other four were sick.
00:14These have now been raced off to the CSIO laboratory to see if we can determine whether or not
00:19that means that we have local transmission here in Australia or not.
00:23It's not a welcome development.
00:25Another two suspected H5 cases found at Cape Jaffa and Port McDonnell.
00:30Until we have further analysis, we don't know how this disease is moving through the birds.
00:34The seven suspected cases are on top of 20 already confirmed across the country,
00:39including two birds in robe and semaphore that were tested over the weekend.
00:42It's certainly adding up to something that could be turning fairly rapidly
00:48into a catastrophic wildlife disease emergency.
00:53Overseas, the H5 strain has spread across entire continents in a matter of months.
00:59But given it's never been in Australia before, authorities say it's hard to predict how quickly it will move.
01:05We are preparing for the worst.
01:07Based on what we've seen overseas, there has been really significant wildlife impacts in particular.
01:11At this time there are no mass mortalities.
01:14There is no evidence of any H5 bird flu in our poultry or agricultural systems.
01:19But that might not last.
01:21It's a very high possibility that it will eventually get into poultry.
01:25The local industry is ramping up its biosecurity efforts
01:28and keeping their poultry's water and food separate from wildlife.
01:31So they know that this potentially is very serious indeed.
01:35The CSIRO results are expected in the coming days.
01:38the quê helps do the same mail as well.
01:40Now with a project of NPM NYU and our ship's palliating has been done with some of the
01:44prior security parameters.
