Vets around the state are refusing to take sick wild birds in the wake of the first confirmed avian flu case here. So far there haven't been any new cases reported of the disease, which has been responsible for the death of millions of birds and mammals overseas.

00:02This wildlife rescue centre in the Onkaparinga Hills is staring down the threat of bird flu.
00:08There is evidence it's infected over 100 mammals all around the world.
00:12So we haven't tested Australian wildlife and this is going to be the test
00:16and we don't want to be the people that find out that other animals can get it.
00:21They're scrambling to set up a separate building to triage the animals and birds coming in.
00:26Other vets are refusing to take in sick birds after it was confirmed that giant petrel discovered by body boarders
00:33had the H5 avian influenza.
00:35Bird lands in the waves, very tired, gets hit by a wave, floating around trying to climb on the boards
00:41etc and ended up getting washed into the beach.
00:44At this stage there's no evidence of local transmission but that isn't allaying fears.
00:50Certainly for species like sea lions that are critically endangered in their own right we'll be watching that very carefully
00:57and we do have concern for that species in particular.
01:00On Kangaroo Island authorities have been boosting the population's health and building up numbers to help mitigate potential impacts.
01:08That's what we call resilience work so that that population can breed better and then has a better chance of
01:15rebounding if impacted by H5 bird flu.
01:18Reassurance for the public, the risk is low for people who don't frequently handle birds.
01:23You have to be touching the bird and having some of the secretions from the bird enter our mucus membranes,
01:29i.e. our mouth or our eyes.
01:31At this stage the messaging remains much the same.
01:34If you see birds that look sick or unwell or are acting unusually do not touch them.
01:40Instead record the location, take a photo or a quick video and report it to environmental authorities.
01:46Instead of finding a house, the assistant state says that they are coming away from 180キ Desirees and Virginiaó
