00:12Citizen Solidarity continues to be one of the main sources of relief following the earthquake
00:16emergency in Colombia amid lack of response by the government.
00:23The Geophysical Institute of Peru reported on Thursday a 4.2 and 4.0 aftershocks in the
00:28Ayahuasca region after a 7.2 earthquake struck the nation on August 20.
00:36In southern Lebanon, Israel's genocidal forces carried out new bombing raids from Thursday
00:40night until early Friday morning, reaffirming their contempt for all attempts at dialogue
00:45and cispires in which they pretend to participate.
00:54Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:56I am Lorena Fon from the Telestudio Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:59We'll begin with the news, so stay with us.
01:20The United Nations expressed concern on Thursday, as 10 days after the earthquake that struck
01:25in Colombia, many communities still have not received vital assistance.
01:28In this context, the United Nations estimates that nearly 1.2 million people need humanitarian
01:33aid and a high percentage of them, 10 days after the earthquake, still have not received it.
01:38Official figures indicate 260 people missing, more than 4,500 injured and 282,709 affected
01:46in 476 municipalities and 15 departments.
01:50However, in communities that were particularly hard hit in the departments of Rizalda, Valle del Cauca,
01:56Chocó and Caldas, humanitarian aid had not been able to reach them.
02:01Furthermore, the United Nations estimates that more than 400 roads have been severely damaged,
02:06making it difficult to access these territories.
02:08The multilateral organization has requested $148.1 million from its partners to assist
02:15more than 600 people in the hottest-hit areas.
02:26In Cali, Citizen Solidarity continues to be one of the main sources of relief following
02:31the earthquake emergency.
02:32In the northern part of the city, a privately owned shelter has become a refuge for many
02:37people affected by the tragedy.
02:40Our correspondent, Milton Genao, brings us the details.
02:45In the face of uncertainty and the lack of concrete measures from the Colombian state,
02:50according to those affected, these privately owned spaces and foundations have become temporary homes
02:55for families who had to abandon their residences or whose homes were destroyed by the earthquake.
03:00It is an initiative born from the heart of the people of Cali.
03:05It was born from a feeling. We have a very large community here, and I feel that the spirit of
03:10Cali
03:11has awakened in all of us. We had been very fractured due to the elections, but this has brought the
03:15city back together, in the midst of misfortune, but with a lot of love.
03:20Small business owners provide families with a place to spend their days and obtain food.
03:25In the process, they seek answers from local, departmental or national government entities
03:32about their homes.
03:37Nothing concrete. All you see is what's on social media and what the government says.
03:41They supposedly said they were going to provide subsidies, but so far, nothing.
03:45I went to the Red Cross and they told me that they weren't involved in that or in providing aid.
03:50They only took my information and said it would stay in the system.
03:54They said they didn't know if an architect would assess the damage and that it could happen this year
03:58or maybe next year. Beyond seeking their most immediate future, a home,
04:06the goal is to rebuild their lives. For example, Edwin survived injuries from a robbery in Bogota,
04:12but nearly died in the earthquake upon arriving in Cali.
04:18We came to organize our lives after seeing how they bashed my head in.
04:23I nearly died. When we arrived here, things became difficult for us,
04:31but God helped us again and gave us the opportunity to rebuild our lives.
04:38The latest report from authorities in this South American nation
04:43puts the death toll from this catastrophe at 319, with 49 deaths in Cali.
04:52A total of 262 people are still missing.
04:56Authorities continue to recover the bodies of those who perished in the earthquake.
05:00Milton Henao, Telesur, Colombia
05:26Nearing two months since the double earthquake that struck several cities in Venezuela,
05:31the Bolivarian government has collected more than two million tons of
05:34debris. These efforts were carried out as part of the Venezuela Rises Plan,
05:38with the goal of ensuring an orderly, safe and efficient recovery process along the coast of La Guayra
05:44State. In this context, the Governor of La Guayra, Alejandro Terán, explained that the materials
05:49removed were transported to temporary storage facilities and a disposal site. Furthermore,
05:55authorities continue to deploy heavy equipment, technical teams and personnel in the affected areas,
06:00at the same time that workers create the necessary conditions for the proper reconstruction of the sun.
06:14Venezuelan Acting President, Elsie Rodriguez, led commemorations in Caracas,
06:18marking 20 years of Latin American Children's Cardiology Hospital, Dr. Gilberto Rodriguez Ochoa.
06:24During the event, children and young patients demonstrated cardiovascular rehabilitation and
06:29CPR techniques, while authorities presented a new book and music production celebrating the hospital's
06:35two decades of service. Since its creation, the Specialized Center has carried out more than 15,300
06:41surgical and hemodynamic procedures. The government also announced plans to modernize the facility in
06:482026, including new echocardiography and hemodynamics equipment, extracorporeal circulation systems,
06:56and fixed and portable x-ray machines.
07:04And the more than 15,400 children who have undergone surgery, young teenagers who are still alive,
07:10can embrace Commander Hugo Chavez's vision in the inauguration and concept of this Chavez hospital.
07:16He envisioned it as a hospital for international solidarity, so that children from other countries
07:21who lacked opportunities, resources and specialized care in their own countries,
07:30would come to Venezuela to receive the love of the Venezuelan people.
07:37And that concept, I uphold it. This hospital is the legacy of Commander Hugo Chavez.
07:44It is a legacy of what relations between peoples should be, brotherhood and cooperation.
07:52Furthermore, the acting president emphasized that despite the impact of unilateral coercive
07:57measures on the public healthcare system, the dedication of the medical staff and
08:01institutional support have guaranteed the right to healthcare in Venezuela.
08:09And to have more than 15,400 boys and girls who have successfully undergone such a complex surgery
08:15for heart diseases is truly commendable.
08:22And I commend the doctors, nurses, technicians and volunteers.
08:27Because you should know that during the toughest moments of the economic
08:30sanctions against Venezuela,
08:36where one of the main victims was public health,
08:41one would come to the cardiology hospital and could see it firsthand.
08:49It was a reflection, and it still is, but there was the effort, the commitment of a country that says,
08:54I will not give up in the face of a blockade, nor in the face of sanctions.
08:58There was the commitment of staff dedicated to saving the lives of boys and girls.
09:08And now we have a short break coming up.
09:10But first, remember, you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English,
09:13where you will find news in different formats, news updates and much more.
09:17We'll be right back. Stay with us.
09:42Welcome back to From the South.
09:43On Thursday, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook the central-south and part of Peru
09:48being felt in several locations across the country.
09:51According to preliminary figures presented by the head of the National Institute of Civil Defense,
09:55General Luis Vázquez Guerrero, field reports confirm eight homes affected in the city of Puquillo,
10:0112 damaged buildings in Puyo, and two damaged properties in San Pedro.
10:05In Coracora, two people were treated for injuries sustained during the evacuation.
10:10So far, no fatalities have been reported as a result of the earthquake.
10:14Regarding state infrastructure, the earthquake damaged three healthcare institutions in Ayacucho
10:19and a medical clinic in Puyo.
10:21In Cusco, cracks were also detected at the regional hospital and the palace of the judiciary.
10:26In the education sector, the earthquake affected five schools in Coracora,
10:30one in San Pedro and another in Cotaruce.
10:32In addition, landslides were recorded on two hills in Coracora and Chacas.
10:37The head of the agency indicated that the data collected is under constant verification.
10:47Yes, that was an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.2 which occurred 25 km to the north.
10:53Let's recall that the 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred 35 km away, basically the same area,
10:59because the depth was the same, 28 km.
11:02The necessary monitoring has been conducted and no additional damage has been reported beyond what was initially documented.
11:08However, we need to monitor the entire affected area and the adjacent areas
11:13in order to rule out any other damage that the population might have suffered.
11:20On Thursday, the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru once again experienced
11:24seismic activity following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the area early that sent them.
11:30The Geophysical Institute of Peru reported two aftershocks north of Coracora in the province of Paranicosas.
11:36The first had a magnitude of 4.2 and the second recorded hours later was 4.0.
11:42The slated quake has its epicenter 26 km north of Coracora and occurred at a depth of 116 km.
11:50Authorities are continuing to monitor seismic activity in the area,
11:54while the assessment of the effects of the earthquake and its aftershocks continues.
12:05The strong earthquake that struck southern Peru on Thursday left to more than 50 homes reported
12:10as affected in the district of Puyo in the department of Ayacucho.
12:14Precisely, according to the technical secretary of the municipality, Harrison Altamirano,
12:18at least 18 of the impacted structures were deemed uninhabitable with damages including torn down
12:24facades and extensive cracks.
12:26Altamirano explained that as well as homes damage was reported at health facilities and schools
12:31and said that risk management technical teams were working to assess the extent of the impact.
12:37Moreover, he stressed that, so far, no fatalities or injuries had been recorded in Puyo after the quake.
12:43In the aftermath of the disaster, local residents have urged the government to help the affected locality.
12:56The Panama Canal will reduce the number of ships allowed to pass throughout the waterway
13:01as severe drought continues to lower water levels in two artificial lakes that supply the canal.
13:06The Panama Canal Authority says that starting September 3rd,
13:10daily vessel traffic will be reduced from 36 ships to 34.
13:14Beginning September 15th, the limit will fall further to 32 vessels a day.
13:19The drought affecting Central America has been driven by the El Niño weather phenomenon,
13:24which warrants Pacific Ocean waters and can disrupt the normal rainfall pattern.
13:29In the Canal region, rainfall between May and August was 34% below the historical average.
13:34Authorities warned that El Niño could cause rainfall to decline even further,
13:39putting additional pressure on the canal's water supply.
13:49Meanwhile, in Serbia, a wildfire has engulfed more than 3,600 hectares of an ancient reserve
13:55located about 60 km from Belgrade.
13:58Since early August, the fire has been burning throughout bus tracks of the Liblatska Pescara Forest Reserve.
14:04On Thursday, a small hamlet on the reserve's edge was evacuated after strong winds struck the flames' store homes.
14:11Fire crews struggled to bring the blaze under control.
14:14According to Interior Minister Ivica Daszik, the situation remains difficult.
14:19As a new heat wave sweeps across the Balkans, Serbian firefighters are battling about 20 fires across the country.
14:30And persistent heavy rain in northern Thailand has triggered severe flash floods and river overflows,
14:36leaving two people dead and five injured.
14:39The government declared none a disaster zone and to put two other northern provinces on alert,
14:44as heavy rain and flash flooding cut off roads and forced evacuations.
14:49In this scenario, authorities instructed that response teams and heavy machinery to be deployed to high-risk areas.
14:55So far, more than 22,000 residents from vulnerable areas prone to landslides have been relocated to temporary shelters and
15:03high ground.
15:03According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, flooding since Tuesday has affected over 30,000 people.

16:03Welcome back to From the South, former United States diplomat Alan Eyre says the latest round of US sanctions against
16:10Iran
16:10reflects Washington's frustration after its military campaign failed to achieve its objectives.
16:16Speaking to Al Jazeera on Thursday, Eyre, who was involved in negotiating the 2015 nuclear deal,
16:23said that the available sanctions options have largely been exhausted.
16:26He said that the remaining measures include the continued naval blockade of Iranian ports
16:31and efforts to impose multilateral sanctions.
16:34Eyre also warned that increased pressure may not lead Iran to compromise.
16:38He said that when Iranian leaders face what they consider existential threats,
16:43they become less likely to make concessions, viewing them as a sign of weakness that could invite further pressure.
16:59The United States Senator Mark Warner is criticizing President Donald Trump over the ongoing conflict in Iran,
17:05warning what the prolonged military campaign is putting United States troops as risk and increasing cause for the public.
17:13Warner, the Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee,
17:16questioned how long the administration plans to continue the conflict.
17:20In a statement, he said that every additional day of war puts servicemen at risk, raises prices and weakens United
17:29States national security readiness.
17:31Warner had previously called the conflict a war of choice and raised concerns about the administration's strategy and legal authority
17:39for continued military operations.
17:41His latest criticism comes as United States lawmakers continue to debate the cause, risk and broader consequences of the military
17:48campaign against Iran.
17:57In southern Lebanon, Israel's genocidal forces carried out new bombing raids from Thursday night until early Friday morning,
18:04reforming their content for all attempts of dialogue and ceasefire in which they pretend to participate.
18:11The airstrike and artillery attacks hit several towns, including Kafar Rumman, Al-Mansuri and Al-Kantara.
18:17The Ali Al-Tahir hills in Nabatie were also targeted by the bombing.
18:22The attacks are taking place despite the ceasefire agreed upon between Israel and Hezbollah in late June.
18:28Israel claims that its operations are in response to alleged violations of the ceasefire, which no international body has confirmed.
18:36According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, Israeli attacks have left at least 4,346 dead and more than 12
18:44,300 injured.
18:46The situation continues to fuel tension and fear of a new escalation in the south of the country.
19:01More than two years after the killing of five-year-old Palestinian child Hind Rajab shook the world,
19:07the Israeli military has officially admitted the fighting on the civilian vehicle she was trapped in
19:13and has announced a criminal investigation into the incident.
19:16In this context, her relatives have expressed their mistrust on the investigations and the Israeli judiciary.
19:23For our part, we have no trust in the state of Israel.
19:26However, we call on other countries that speak of humanity and human rights to fulfill their role regarding Hind's case
19:32and the crimes being committed against the population of Gaza and the people of Gaza.
19:35We were shocked by the statement issued by the Israeli army, which we learned about through the news agencies.
19:45There is no trust in the state of Israel, and therefore we demand that other countries conduct an investigation,
19:51whether regarding the case of the martyr Hind, that of the other martyred children in Gaza, or regarding the crimes
19:56occurring there.
20:04The Israeli army's acknowledgement of its mistake regarding the incident involving Hind, or the execution of Leal and Leal's family,
20:11is an attempt by the Israeli army to justify its mistake to the world, but at the same time it
20:16continues to commit atrocious crimes every day.
20:18During the war, it committed numerous murders.
20:22Furthermore, Hind Rajab's grandmother called on countries around the world to condemn the ongoing Israeli genocide against Palestinians,
20:29denouncing the aggressions continue despite the agreed ceasefire.
20:33The Israeli army will not issue statements or speak about the crimes it commits.
20:37Every day, the world is led to believe that the war in Gaza has ended, but in reality, we live
20:42through the war every minute.
20:43There are still bombings, shootings and terror, and the occupation commits crimes daily.
20:57Of course, the statement issued today by the Israeli army is insufficient and represents an attempt to justify its mistake.
21:04Therefore, we consider this statement insufficient and demand that countries which speak of humanity, human rights or children's rights in
21:10particular, take concrete action in reality.
21:13We hope that the entire world will stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza and with the children of
21:18Gaza who suffer every day.
21:19As we have already said, the war has not stopped and every day crimes are committed by the occupation.
21:29We demand that the soldiers who killed Hind, this innocent girl who was sick in a safe zone, be held
21:33accountable,
21:34and we demand the rights of all children, not just Hind's rights. Hind is not the only girl who was
21:38murdered.
21:39Hind is part of the people of Gaza.
21:41Hind is one of the children of Gaza, but her story became known because it was documented.
21:46Every day, an incident like Hind's occurs, and there have been many cases similar to hers.
21:52Moving on to other topics, China and African countries have adopted a joint declaration calling for closer cooperation in news
21:59reporting, content production and youth exchanges.
22:01The agreement was released Thursday in Beijing during the 7th Forum on China-African Media Cooperation, which brought together more
22:08than 400 participants from China and 45 African countries.
22:13Discussions focused on innovation and new technologies in the audiovisual sector, particularly the growing role of artificial intelligence.
22:20The Forum also announced 80 new cooperation initiatives, including joint productions, content exchanges and emerging formats such as show form
22:29dramas.
22:29Participants also agreed to continue showcasing selected programs from both sides to add audiences in China and Africa.
22:37Since the late forum, since the late forum was launched in 2012, it was supported more than 200 cooperations projects,
22:47with participants now looking to expand that collaboration ahead of next year's Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit.
22:59For these past years, many African journalists have been trained here in China, but also in Africa.
23:08For instance, for us, AUB, this year, early this year, we had a training on how we can use artificial
23:17intelligence to produce content.
23:20We have to involve ourselves in this domain to master it and to use it for our development.
23:29So improving information and communication between these two regions of almost 3 billion people is extremely important.
23:37And what we are seeing, and as I said earlier in the opening session, the media and information has become
23:43a strategic tool.
23:44And on the African continent, we are determined to use the media to deepen our partnership with China.
23:54And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
23:56Remember, you can find this and many other stories on our website at telestudyenglish.net.
