00:09Welcome back to From the South. On Thursday, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook the central-south
00:15and part of Peru being felt in several locations across the country. According to preliminary
00:19figures presented by the head of the National Institute of Civil Defense, General Luis Vázquez
00:25Guerrero, field reports confirmed eight homes affected in the city of Puquillo, 12 damaged
00:30buildings in Puyo and two damaged properties in San Pedro. In Coracora, two people were treated
00:35for injuries sustained during the evacuation. So far, no fatalities have been reported as
00:40a result of the earthquake. Regarding state infrastructure, the earthquake damaged three
00:45healthcare institutions in Ayacucho and a medical clinic in Puyo. In Cusco, cracks were also
00:50detected at the Regional Hospital and the Palace of the Judiciary. In the education sector,
00:55the earthquake affected five schools in Coracora, one in San Pedro and another in Cotaruce.
01:00In addition, landslides were recorded on two hills in Coracora and Chacas. The head of the
01:06agency indicated that the data collected is under constant verification.
01:15Yes, that was an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.2 which occurred 25 km to the north. Let's
01:21recall that the 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred 35 km away, basically the same area, because
01:27the depth was the same, 28 km. The necessary monitoring has been conducted and no additional
01:33damage has been reported beyond what was initially documented. However, we need to monitor the entire
01:38affected area and the adjacent areas in order to rule out any other damage that the population
01:44might have suffered.
01:48On Thursday, the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru once again experienced seismic activity
01:53following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the area early that sent them. The Geophysical
01:59Institute of Peru reported two aftershocks north of Coracora in the province of Paranicosas.
02:04The first had a magnitude of 4.2 and the second recorded hours later was 4.0. The
02:10slated quake has its epicenter 26 km north of Coracora and occurred at a depth of 116 km.
02:18Authorities are continuing to monitor seismic activity in the area while the assessment of
02:23the effects of the earthquake and its aftershocks continues.
