00:00The weather threatens to disrupt voting in Brazil's largest electoral throne hall as heavy rain and storm warnings hit Sao
00:06Paulo.
00:07Election officials are closing monitoring turnout levels and evaluating whether to extend voting hours in the affected areas.
00:13For more information on how the weather is impacting this electoral day in that region of Brazil, our correspondent Brian
00:18Mir is on the ground.
00:22When I was reporting from the polling station in the last from the south, I received a warning on my
00:29cell phone
00:29saying that a severe weather incident was arriving in Sao Paulo and that all people should immediately seek shelter.
00:38So now it's raining hard. The lightning storms haven't started yet.
00:42But to the south of us, lightning and flooding has already hit a bunch of cities.
00:47Now, this is going to have an interesting effect on the election because Sao Paulo is the state with around
00:5420 percent of the population of Brazil in it,
00:57that in 2022 carried Jair Bolsonaro.
01:00So if this will have an effect on lowering voter turnout in a state that was expected to carry the
01:07vote with a slight lead by Flavio Bolsonaro,
01:11we'll only find out tonight. Voting ends at 5 p.m. and it should take about three hours to count.
01:18We don't know yet if the electoral courts are going to issue extensions for the areas hit by the storm
01:25so that people will have more time to go out and vote if they couldn't this afternoon.
01:31That's also a possibility. We're only going to find out in the next hour or so what the court decides.
01:37In the meantime, it's impossible to get to a polling station without rain gear and an umbrella and they say
01:46that there's a warning of falling trees.
01:48So a lot of people are staying inside right now. And that's an unusual thing to happen on an election
01:54day here in Brazil.
