02:04Peru is one of the world's most seismically active countries.
02:09The nation lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone surrounding the Pacific Ocean where frequent
02:16earthquakes and volcanic activity occur.
02:18The country has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past.
02:24In 2007, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Peru's Ica region, killing nearly 600 people and
02:34causing widespread destruction.
02:36Authorities are now assessing the latest damage from Thursday's magnitude 6.7 quake, while emergency
02:44teams continue to monitor affected communities.
02:47For residents in the southern Andes, the earthquake serves as another reminder of the powerful
02:54seismic forces beneath Peru, and the constant risk posed by living along the Pacific Ring of
03:01Fire.
