00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're looking at the best games starring the X-Men.

00:11We're only including games that focus on members of the team, rather than the overall

00:16Marvel roster like the Ultimate Alliance series.

00:25Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring

00:43If you haven't heard of this one, don't feel too bad.

00:45Not many of us had Sega Game Gears growing up, and the majority of its library didn't

00:50make much of a splash.

00:52King's Master's Legacy, an exclusive for the handheld, was actually pretty good though.

01:04It followed the team going up against the titular villain, who held an antidote for

01:07a virus killing mutants.

01:09Visuals were naturally stronger than anything the Game Boy was offering at the time, even

01:14though the system's battery life was atrocious.

01:17And while gameplay didn't extend past your standard action platformer mechanics, unlockable

01:22characters like Bishop, Gambit, Cable, and Rogue helped freshen things up.

01:41Of course, there were some solid X-Men outings on Sega's home consoles as well.

01:45A sequel to the 1993 original, Clone Wars saw the team battling the Phalanx, an evil

01:50alien hivemind.

01:52Improvements over the first were subtle, but added together to make a more enjoyable game.

01:59Beast, Psylocke, and the unlockable Magneto were nice team additions.

02:08Levels were a bit grander and more intricate, the difficulty level was more balanced, and

02:12you could use each character's abilities as often as you liked without worrying about

02:16an energy meter.

02:17That's not to mention that it looked fantastic, and still does.

02:28X-Men Mutant Academy 2 Although it's not the best X-Men fighting

02:39game, Mutant Academy 2 still deserves some recognition.

02:42Released by Activision for the original PlayStation, it's by far the best in this trilogy.

02:47It may seem like a by-the-numbers fighter by today's standards, but at the time it

02:51was a blast to have at home.

03:00You could fight as your expected combatants like Wolverine and Cyclops, but there were

03:04also more obscure characters like Forge and Havoc, as well as villains like Juggernaut

03:09and Mystique.

03:10Weapons and combos were far more extensive than in the first game, and it was a lot of

03:15fun battling across iconic locales like the Weapon X Lab, the Savage Land, and of course,

03:21the X-Men Mansion.

03:29X-Men Children of the Atom Capcom has released some of the best fighting

03:39games to feature Marvel characters, and it all began with 1995's Children of the Atom.

03:45The game is almost a branch between two eras of style.

03:48It features 1v1 matches as opposed team fights in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, though was

03:54much quicker paced than what the studio had done with Street Fighter.

04:05While there's only 10 fighters to choose from, Capcom did a lot with a little.

04:10There are a ton of attacks and combos to master for each character.

04:13Sadly, your enjoyment depended on where you played it.

04:16The arcade version is obviously top-notch, as was the Sega Saturn one, but the PlayStation

04:21port's slowdown was pretty rough.

04:31X-Men Mutant Apocalypse

04:42Before Capcom started its legacy of Marvel fighters, it released an awesome beat-em-up

04:47for the Super Nintendo.

04:48Each of the five selectable heroes—Wolverine, Cyclops, Gambit, Psylocke, and Beast—had

04:53their own individual level so players could get used to them before the rest of the game

04:57opened up.

04:58Unique to see at the time.

05:02Plus, naturally, given the studio's expertise in fighting games and beat-em-ups, they all

05:10controlled like a dream.

05:12Many considered it to be the best X-Men game around upon its release, and even returning

05:17to it today, it's easy to see why.

05:25X-Men Origins Wolverine

05:35Logan's origin story may be one of the weaker entries in the X-Men film franchise, but the

05:39tie-in game is, surprisingly, a damn good time.

05:43While it was released across every platform to varying degrees of quality, the undeniable

05:48best versions were found on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

05:58It wasn't just because of the stronger visuals and controls, though they obviously helped.

06:03These versions received a mature rating due to their strong violence, letting us unleash

06:07Wolverine's viciousness like never before or since.

06:11With a story that can be wrapped up in under 10 hours, the biggest criticism was that it

06:15was too short.

06:16But hey, at least those 10 hours are fun.

06:26X-Men Legends

06:33Anybody missing Raven's software right about now?

06:36Before it was turned into a Call of Duty support studio, and before its work on X-Men Origins

06:40Wolverine and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Raven put out the X-Men Legends games.

06:45When the first game was released, there wasn't really anything like it at the time.

06:50A top-down action RPG on consoles with co-op that also starred our favorite mutants?

06:56It was great.

07:03The cel-shaded comic book look popped, while the ability to customize your lineup's stats

07:07made the combat a bit more strategic.

07:10Though it would naturally be outshined by others it inspired, this is still a strong

07:15foundation.

07:23X-Men

07:24Konami's X-Men beat-em-up is understandably considered a juggernaut, pun intended, when

07:36it comes to the golden age of arcades.

07:39Though it wasn't the first game to feature the team, it may as well have been.

07:43It dwarfed the few adaptations that came before it, and set the standard as well as showed

07:47the possibilities of superhero games moving forward.

07:57As Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and the now forgotten Dazzler, players

08:03punched and blasted their way through iconic villains and goons alike to square off against

08:07Magneto.

08:09X-Men unsurprisingly earned a ton of admiration and quarters when it debuted, but we'll still

08:14rush to the cabinet whenever we see one out in the wild.

08:24X-Men vs. Street Fighter

08:33Building off of its work on Children of the Atom and 1995's Marvel Super Heroes, Capcom

08:38took the X-Men and pitted them against one of its most popular franchises.

08:43It was kind of surreal seeing these two giants cross over, as it was long before these types

08:48of things were regular occurrences.

08:50While that definitely gave it a level of charm and excitement, it was also an incredible

08:55fighter.

09:01Unlike Children of the Atom, players could now fight in teams of two, one of the first

09:08instances of tag team fights.

09:10The mechanics were also smooth as silk, and the visuals are timeless.

09:14Clearly, X-Men vs. Street Fighter walked so Marvel vs. Capcom could run.

09:27X-Men Legends 2 Rise of Apocalypse

09:38The first X-Men Legends is great, but the sequel is just a little better, and in pretty

09:43much every way.

09:45Its cel-shaded visuals are a bit crisper, and its mechanics are more refined, with more

09:49abilities for each character.

09:51Speaking of characters, the story saw the X-Men team up with the Brotherhood of Mutants

09:55to stop Apocalypse.

10:04While a larger roster for a sequel is expected, it was nice being able to play as traditional

10:08villains alongside the good guys.

10:10The inclusion of online was also a smart call, since it made co-op easier, and playing the

10:15first game alone wasn't nearly as fun as it was with friends.

10:19Rise of the Apocalypse is still one of the best multiplayer experiences for X-Men fans.
