Could Shohei Ohtani actually become a New York Met?!

Craig Carton and Bart Scott explore the wild possibility of Ohtani opting out of his Dodgers contract and Steve Cohen making the ultimate power move to bring baseball's biggest superstar to Queens. Could Uncle Stevie really steal Ohtani from Los Angeles and make the Mets the Evil Empire of MLB?

00:00There are some people that cannot be killed.
00:03You can try your hardest, but they keep showing up.
00:06And I think this will mark his third comeback to WFAN.
00:10Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Bart Scott.
00:14What's up, Bart?
00:15Don't call it a comeback.
00:17I've been here for years.
00:18Off and on, you have been.
00:19This is a show that we've been talking about doing or trying to do forever.
00:23For a very, very long time.
00:25I forgot how jacked up on my own dude you are.
00:27Usually I'm the guy that jacked up on my own dude.
00:29Now, I got to raise my level.
00:30A 2 o'clock show for you, man.
00:32You got all kind of coffee.
00:33We got cases of the dew in the back.
00:35You just asked, and we got you covered, no doubt.
00:38Processed carbs, all kind of good stuff.
00:40It's a pleasure, man.
00:41It's good to come home, even though I didn't recognize my home.
00:43This is like my home being renovated in mid-renovation.
00:46First of all, I didn't recognize any of my former ideas.
00:50Like, okay, man, I know at the corner I'm going to run into the pharmacy.
00:52Let me stop into the pharmacy.
00:54Gone.
00:54You know what I'm saying?
00:55Come grab myself.
00:55All right, let me go get something so I can be jacked up on my own dude.
00:58Let me go get me an ice caramel ribbon frappe.
01:01Gone.
01:01I'm like, where the hell am I at?
01:03Then I go to the lobby, and I'm looking for the security desk.
01:10Gone.
01:11I'm like, okay, well, excuse me.
01:12It looks all beautiful.
01:13That's what happens when Google money kind of hits.
01:15Google took over.
01:16Google hits the stuff.
01:17They're like, we need an ambiance.
01:18Yeah, so we got ambiance.
01:19We got a rooftop deck now.
01:21What?
01:21Oh, yeah, we got it all.
01:22We got free cold brew up there.
01:23So we don't have to go over to Hotel Hugo no more to go steal some cold brew.
01:28We just did it straight at the top.
01:29If you want a cold brew and avocado on toast, you can just go a block away.
01:33It's great to have Bart here.
01:34And how's vacation treating you?
01:37Vacation is good.
01:38You know, it's almost like, ah, am I prepared to do a four-hour show?
01:43We're going to find out quickly, aren't we?
01:45Cut me out.
01:46Cut me out.
01:46We got lots to do today.
01:48We'll get to all the football stuff with Bart here.
01:50But I think I have, Bart, what even you would have to consider.
01:53What could be the greatest flex in the history of New York sports, okay?
01:59If you've been paying attention, there's a guy named Mark Walter.
02:02Mark Walter owns, majority owner of the L.A. Dodgers.
02:06He's the same exact guy that just sold the Los Angeles Lakers for a $12 billion valuation, right?
02:14And everyone's like, that's interesting.
02:15He just bought the L.A. Lakers.
02:16A year ago, right?
02:17Like yesterday.
02:18And he made $2 billion in profit on flipping the L.A. Lakers.
02:23So now the story starts coming out that the guy's probably going to be indicted by the feds for some
02:29type of financial fraud here.
02:31And he's trying to cover some debts that are out there.
02:34I don't want to get too in the weeds on it, but he allegedly took money from A and gave
02:38it to B.
02:39And you're not allowed to do that.
02:40Money's not always fungible.
02:41And he's in trouble.
02:42So he's trying to cover a pretty big nut.
02:45And apparently he needs about another $5 billion to cover this nut.
02:49Whoa, how much?
02:49$5 billion.
02:51That's where he's looking at right now.
02:52So he got $2.
02:53Or did he get to $12 and that's part of the $5?
02:55He made $2 billion on the sale of the Lakers.
03:00Okay.
03:01Apparently, he still needs to cover about another $5 billion and he needs it liquid.
03:08All right?
03:08He doesn't have it liquid, which is why he's trying to bake and shake right now, shake and bake, to
03:14try to bring in liquid dough.
03:16Let me hold some.
03:16So that when the feds do come in, he can say, we're clean.
03:21Everybody got their money back.
03:23Unfortunately for him, that's not the way the law works.
03:26Okay?
03:27And I can speak to that from experience.
03:30The law don't work that way.
03:31As much as you want it to, making people whole after they start the investigation does not count.
03:38All right, that being said, the greatest flex of all time, all right, it is written into Shohei Ohtani's contract.
03:47It's something that in contract law is referred to as a key man clause.
03:52The key man clause means that you can put into your contract that if so-and-so is no longer
03:59employed by the company, it gives you an out from your contract.
04:04Okay?
04:04Yeah.
04:05Shohei Ohtani has a key man clause in his contract that if Mark Walter is not the owner of the
04:12L.A. Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani can opt out of that contract and become a free agent.
04:18Go ahead.
04:20Who would think to ever put that in your clause?
04:22I've tried three times unsuccessfully.
04:25Did we know that this was a possibility?
04:27Did Shohei know something?
04:29Good question.
04:29Where's the guy that Shohei got sent back that was stealing all the money?
04:32What's going on with that?
04:33That guy's in prison probably looking at a very big payday the day he gets out.
04:38We'll get to that later, okay?
04:39So here's the flex.
04:42If you're Steve Cohen and things have not gone the way you wanted them to go in the first five
04:47years of your New York Met ownership,
04:50and you've got more money than everybody else, which he does, and he's having another terrific year on Wall Street,
04:56he's the number one hedge fund in America, and it's not very close right now, right?
05:01Why wouldn't you reach out to his agent off the side and say,
05:05look, if he opts out, you've got the money, I'll make you the same exact offer he's got.
05:11You want deferred money, I'll defer it.
05:13You want the money up front, I'll give it to you up front.
05:16However you want it, I got it.
05:18That would be the greatest flex of all time where Steve Cohen steals Shohei Ohtani from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
05:28Who says no?
05:29Just like he stole Juan Soto from the Yankees.
05:33Similar but different, but yes.
05:35Yes.
05:37$750 million, another $700 million that's not deferred, that's paid up front for Soto.
05:45If I could do my math, let's see, I got an associate's degree from, yeah.
05:50That's $1.4 billion on two players?
05:53Your math is correct, over a decade, but yes.
05:56$1.4 billion on Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto over the course of the next decade.
06:02We love Uncle Stevie.
06:04What's the point of having the money if you don't spend it?
06:06But could you imagine if even with that, because when you look at like Shohei and what he did with
06:13Trout,
06:14you can say Juan Soto, Trout, talent's kind of close.
06:19Similar.
06:20Their teams weren't ever close to winning anything.
06:22He didn't win until he got to the Dodgers, that's right.
06:24So if you bring him to the Mets in this market, nobody cares about Anaheim Disney or whatever the hell
06:30is out there
06:30with the Los Angeles Angels.
06:32Angels, right?
06:33Right, nobody cares.
06:34In New York?
06:35Yeah.
06:36Seven points.
06:37Can Shohei handle that smoke if it's not instantaneous?
06:40Listen, I think he can.
06:42Now, he has shown no interest in coming to New York, famously, right?
06:46Well, none of the Japanese players have shown that ability or that willingness to come to the East Coast
06:52because being in L.A. is only 10 hours back to their homeland and the easier flights.
06:58I'm sure they got the G-20s and all that stuff.
07:00That's why Yamamoto, like, they didn't even entertain.
07:03Like, the Dodgers have like a monopoly on the Japanese players.
07:08Currently, that's fair.
07:09Or the Asian players.
07:09I agree.
07:09They all go there.
07:11I mean, I think it would have to be.
07:12It can't be $750.
07:14It got to be $850.
07:15Whatever the number is.
07:16You got to pay.
07:17We talk about the New York.
07:18You got to pay the New York tax.
07:19Yes, there's the New York tax for sure.
07:21But here's the point.
07:22It could happen.
07:24And if I'm a New York Mets fan, I know it's pie in the sky right now.
07:27Yes.
07:28What's the point of having the wealthiest owner in the sport?
07:31Screws me, Doug.
07:31Right?
07:32This is the whole point of it.
07:33This is why the New York Mets are supposed to be a good baseball team, not 13 games under 500.
07:38We should be the evil empire.
07:40Absolutely right.
07:41More than the Yankees.
07:42More than the Dodgers.
07:44More than the Red Sox.
07:45More than anybody.
07:46And I just, no one else is talking about it.
07:48But everyone's talking about how the guy might get indicted.
07:51I'm talking about it from a standpoint.
07:53The Mets can go get him.
07:55I mean, it could be good for Shohei because once they start digging, you know, you start
07:59thinking about throwing some people under the bus.
08:01Maybe like, hey, yo, you remember what Kobe did to Shaq?
08:04Right.
08:06Yes.
08:06When he was being interrogated.
08:09Like, Shaq be doing it too.
08:11Shohei might need to get out of the organization, but they do a deeper dive.
08:15I don't think baseball wants to find anything wrong with Shohei Otani.
08:19No.
08:19Right now, he's the golden goose right now for baseball.
08:22Which is why that gambling thing got swept under the rug very quick.
08:25If you remember the gambling scammer, just real quick, the interpreter, the first time
08:29he got interviewed by the gal at ESPN, he said Otani was a part of it.
08:34Yeah.
08:34And then all of a sudden, the lawyers got in.
08:36And no joke, eight hours later, he said, I was lying to you.
08:39It's all me.
08:40Hey, yo, that's why for me, you talk about having a wingman, a guy that's going to jump
08:45on a grenade.
08:46Nobody in the history of sports has ever had a realer one than Barry Bonds.
08:51Really?
08:52The guy, that Conte guy?
08:54Yes.
08:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:55I want a friend like that.
08:56A guy to go prison for you.
08:58Go to prison.
08:59Don't say I got you.
09:00Well, I'll tell you what.
09:00If the interpreter comes out of a federal prison and he's got a nice rod in a mansion,
09:05then we can do the investigation.
09:08I just want to put it out there because I want to get Yankee fans on it as well because
09:12you'll be pissed if it happens.
09:14Men fans, you can make it happen.
09:15Why can't the Yankee fans do it?
09:16Because I'll start when I won't do it.
09:17But you wouldn't do it for Otani?
09:19You talk about Garrett Cole was the white whale, right?
09:22Correct.
09:22He was the white whale.
09:23Yeah.
09:23Then what the hell is Shohei Otani?
09:25He's three white whales.
09:26He's the dragon.
09:28Yeah.
09:28So, I mean, hey, if you're going to spin it for anybody, you talk about the left porch,
09:32the short porch in there for Shohei Otani?
09:34Yeah.
09:34He's hitting you 50 home runs, stealing bases.
09:37You know what I'm saying?
09:38We got a Chinatown all around this piece.
09:40You know what I'm saying?
09:41You talk about sales, it'll be a waiting list for tickets for the Yankees.
09:45It's on the table right now.
09:47If Mark Walter winds up selling his stake in the Dodgers or getting indicted and having
09:52to sell his stake in the Dodgers, Otani's got a window where he can opt out.
09:57Now, it's interesting you said that, Bart, because I'm only seeing it from a Met perspective.
10:01But you're right.
10:02If Otani was willing to opt out, he's not going to opt out without a deal in his back
10:06pocket, then why wouldn't the Yankees?
10:09And again, Otani had a chance to go to both teams and showed no interest in coming to New
10:14York.
10:14But things have changed.
10:15There are a few ways.
10:16Number one, he's won MVP awards.
10:20He's won World Series.
10:21Now he's playing for the money.
10:23Probably he's going to win another.
10:24And not even so much.
10:25You talk about, you know, in wake of Kawhi and circumventing the salary cap and all that
10:31stuff.
10:31Could you imagine what?
10:33If Shohei came to New York, period, let alone the Yankees, he may be the most popular player
10:40ever in New York history.
10:43It'd be on the table.
10:44It'd be on the table.
10:45I can't think of one.
10:46Outside of Wayne Gretzky coming here or something like that, that never happened, this would
10:50be the biggest star to ever leave anywhere to come to New York.
10:55Oh, it wouldn't even be close.
10:56Not Reggie Jackson.
10:58Not Mark Messier.
11:00Nobody.
11:00He's not here.
11:01Now you'd have to win at some point, right?
11:03At some point, you'd have to win a championship.
11:05So that's what I'm saying.
11:06And if you're Shohei Atani, you're going to say, where can I win a championship?
11:09Yes.
11:10It would definitely be with the Yankees.
11:12Over the Mets, yes.
11:13Right now, if you're looking at it like, I want to go to that, hell to the norm.
11:17That's right.
11:18Now, if the money is right and the money's up front, but delayed like Bobby Bonilla, like
11:23he's getting paid when he's 50 years old, still getting a check for 25 men a year, like,
11:28yeah, I'll do that.
11:29I'll do that, absolutely.
11:30Yeah, the Yankees make more sense.
11:31But don't let the Yankees off the hooks.
11:32But the Mets would be more likely to do it.
11:34So I just want to put it out there.
11:35Look, it's pie in the sky.
11:37You're going to yell at me that it's no way of happening.
11:39Hey, man, it's August.
11:39But it could happen.
11:40It could happen.
11:42It is mid-August.
11:43And it seems possible.
11:45And look at all your calls on it.
11:46888-808-1019.
11:49The New York Giants made a move today.
11:51And this just shows you how people have now bought in to John Harbaugh being a savior.
11:57Let me just walk you through this real quick, Bart.
11:59Because you're a football guy.
12:00You probably even know the guy, okay?
12:02Yeah, play for.
12:03Well, no, you played for Harbaugh, but I'm talking about Philele.
12:06The offensive lineman who they just traded for a six-round pick, okay?
12:09Philele fish.
12:10Okay, here's the thing I don't understand.
12:12I heard Evan and T.
12:14I don't see you talking about it for the majority of their show today.
12:16I'm trying to figure out why.
12:19He was never going to play here.
12:21He's a backup offensive lineman at best.
12:24Yeah.
12:24And they traded him for a guy, an unknown guy, a six-round pick.
12:28That's also, most likely, never going to play a snap for the New York Giants.
12:33But Harbaugh's got so many people so bamboozled right now into thinking that he invented football.
12:42All day today, all I heard was, Harbaugh's a genius.
12:45Imagine getting a six-round pick for Philele.
12:48He was never going to play.
12:50You know the guy?
12:51Listen, I know Philele.
12:53We used to call him Philele fish.
12:54Like, I've never seen a player in Raven history.
12:57Ravens love their players, and they will give them as much grace as possible.
13:01But he wore his welcome out there.
13:02Oh, is that right?
13:04I've never seen any player from the Ravens be hated by the fan base.
13:09They hated him because he was a turnstop.
13:12He hurt Lamar Jackson.
13:14Exactly.
13:14He was a turnstop.
13:16He started off coming from Minnesota, for those that don't know.
13:19He's from Minnesota.
13:20He was a left tackle.
13:21Big, massive guy.
13:22And when we think about left tackles that massive, we think about the kid that's out in Philadelphia
13:27and his ability to do what he's able to do with his massive size.
13:31But his big size is his biggest handicap.
13:35Like, negative and detriment, yeah.
13:37At guard.
13:38Because at guard, you know, it's about being able to redirect.
13:41You got some of the quickest guys.
13:42You got the Aaron Donalds of the world.
13:44You got the Quentin Williams of the world.
13:45You got to be a better athlete.
13:46Right, right.
13:47You got to be a better athlete because you're not always covered up.
13:49Right?
13:50And you can't use that size.
13:51As a tackle, you can use that size to kind of shield.
13:53Just don't get beat inside.
13:54Let the guy beat you around.
13:56Hope your quarterback can step up.
13:57But when you get instant pressure on your quarterback, I forgot who the guy he got almost killed.
14:02And he got killed by like a backup, you know, on a second squad from Minnesota.
14:07Right.
14:07Like barbecue chicken.
14:08So, Harbs brought him.
14:09And I was surprised that Harbs decided to bring him.
14:12Right?
14:12Of course, you know, bringing, bringing Ricard, the fullback.
14:15You mean guys you know.
14:16That makes sense to a certain level, yeah.
14:18But that guy?
14:19Yeah.
14:20So, they brought in the most disliked guy in Ravens history.
14:22And obviously...
14:23And he instantly became the most disliked person for the Giants.
14:27The Giants are applauded that this guy is out of here.
14:29Yeah, they are.
14:30And they got something to return for him, which is shocking.
14:32So, we'll get into Bart's take on Johnny Harbaugh because he played for him.
14:36We'll see if Bart agrees with the many Giants fans thinking he is the actual savior.
14:40We'll get your calls as well.
14:41But we'll start you off with Shohei Otani can come to New York.
14:46The question for you as Yankee fans and Mets fans now is, do you make the call?
14:52Do you do everything in your power once the Dodger thing blows up to let Otani know we got you
14:59here?
14:59888-808-1019.
15:02888-808-1019.
