Berlin Districts are so very different that it is very hard to choose one when moving here, even locals who have lived in Berlin for years haven't visited most districts. This video will give you an overview and guide you through your decision in which Berlin neighborhood to settle. Life in Berlin is very different, depending on where you rent your apartment.

00:00In my previous video, I have shown you the best districts to live in Berlin inside the Ring.
00:04But that is just a small part of Berlin.
00:07There are dozens of more districts outside the Ring that have so much more to offer.
00:12And in this video, I'm going to show you how it looks there, who lives there and what's special about
00:17them.
00:18After that, you can decide which one is best for you.
00:21Let's start in the very east with Friedrichshagen and Ransdorf.
00:25The two districts that are located at the beautiful Möggelsee.
00:29Berlin's biggest lake, Friedrichshagen, comes across like a peaceful little town in the outskirts of Berlin.
00:36With lots of nice little shops and cafés around.
00:39Mostly wealthier German families seem to live here.
00:42While in summer, it is a popular spot for the inner city crowd to escape the heat of Berlin's concrete
00:47jungle.
00:48Since there is plenty of space to hang out by the water.
00:56If we move a bit to the right, we can find one of Berlin's most unique areas.
01:01In Ransdorf, there is Neu Venedig or New Venice.
01:05Where you can have the feeling of being in Venice without having to go down all the way to Italy.
01:11If you'd like to live close to the water, it doesn't get better than this.
01:16Though it will only be quiet during the week.
01:18Because it's become a popular weekend trip destination for many Berliners who love to explore the area by canoe.
01:30Before we move on to magnificent Köpenick, let me quickly tell you about the partner of today's video.
01:36Safety Wing.
01:37Since you are watching this video, you're thinking about moving to Berlin for some time, right?
01:41One thing you need while being abroad is health insurance.
01:45Every time I'm going abroad for a while, I will get Safety Wing.
01:48Because my German health insurance will not cover me outside of Europe.
01:52And Safety Wing is the leading medical travel insurance for anyone who travels a lot.
01:57They offer two different options.
01:59One is called Remote Health, which is designed for remote workers.
02:03And secondly, Nomad Insurance.
02:05For digital nomads, which sometimes I am.
02:08Nomad Insurance covers you all around the world and can be purchased while already traveling.
02:13Safety Wing is super flexible.
02:15It just works like a subscription.
02:16You can cancel anytime without having to give a reason.
02:19It's not only very affordable.
02:21They have amazing customer support.
02:23And the reviews really speak for themselves.
02:25I mean, have you ever seen such a high rating on Trustpilot for anything?
02:30I haven't.
02:31It's simple.
02:32It's straightforward.
02:33There are no hidden fees or rules.
02:35Everything can be done online.
02:37It's really the only insurance you need for traveling.
02:39Because it not only covers medical stuff, but also travel delay, natural disaster,
02:44and personal liability.
02:46So if you were always wondering what is the best choice for travel insurance, search no more.
02:51Go to the link in the description and check out all the details.
02:55And now, let's see what's up in Köpenick, huh?
02:58Of all the districts, Köpenick is for sure the most charming one.
03:02Thanks to its historic Old Town with its unique German architecture and sites such as the Köpenick
03:09Palace and the Old Town Hall.
03:11Here, you can find both tourists and locals admiring the scenery around them.
03:16The whole district is dotted with classical statues.
03:20Something that you won't find anywhere else in Berlin.
03:23We asked a Köpenick resident to tell us more about this little gem.
03:27I think that it is one of the most beautiful areas, especially the Old Town of Köpenick.
03:34With the lots of water, it is an island.
03:35So I think it is a very beautiful area from nature and the environment.
03:41There are lots of water, even the woods are not far away.
03:45So the nature itself, you can spend a lot of time on and on the water.
03:50The advantage is that if you really are at a party at night or something,
03:55then it is just the way at night sometimes a little further to come back again.
04:06Just up from Köpenick, Schöneweide is an old industrial area sitting on the banks of the river.
04:11In recent years, Schöneweide has seen a surge in cultural development.
04:16You can find many new cafes, galleries and arts initiatives popping up in the many old industrial buildings.
04:23For example, there is the recently opened RSO, Art and Cultural Hub, located in an old brewery
04:30with large open spaces for creative activities.
04:33You can really feel a growing interest from younger people visiting from all over Berlin.
04:38And with the FEZ Wuhlheide Center for Children, Youth and Family,
04:43the biggest center for games, education and adventure in Berlin,
04:46Schöneweide is also a great place for families who want to escape the inner city life.
04:51But it is also a convenient place to live for students, since the HTW University campus is located here.
04:58As one of the most up-and-coming areas in all of Berlin, Schöneweide has something for every age.
05:05Moving a bit north, we find the district of Friedrichsfelde.
05:09I would say this place is calm and it's not so far from the city and you get cheap apartments
05:16here.
05:17We have nice parks, because they're not so crowded.
05:21It's nice for going for walks.
05:23And also we have the Chiapas clothes.
05:26That's the best.
05:28Yeah, we have a starter annual house.
05:31I think it's definitely for students, also families.
05:36I think here, especially here, live more conservative people.
05:40And less wealthy people.
05:42It's mostly like these big houses with cheaper flats.
05:45Yeah, I live in a socially supported apartment building.
05:50But the neighbors are terrible.
05:52Pissing in our lifts or taking our amazon packages and not giving it back.
05:58But I guess that happens at other places as well.
06:05As stones throw away to the right, there is Beesdorf with the beautiful Beesdorf Palace at its heart.
06:12We met some residents to find out more about who lives here and who this district is for.
06:18Someone who wants to stay in a quiet place, needs less noise around,
06:26then I would definitely say that you should choose this place.
06:29If you're talking about the community, Germans, Russians, mostly oldest people or you know,
06:35who has been settled and his family, those kind of.
06:38There are a couple of hiking areas where you can go build bikes or like on foot.
06:43Yeah, so basically a lot of nature around here.
06:46Yeah, and also if you want to pay less rent for houses, then maybe you can choose this place.
06:52Nice.
06:53If you get one.
06:53If you're a party people, then yeah, it's definitely not for you.
06:56I can't believe that this is actually in Berlin.
06:59This feels like a proper village.
07:02You know, there's small houses everywhere, everybody has a garden, there's a pool, a trampoline.
07:09You have plenty of space.
07:10And then we, inside the ring, are just scrammed together, you know, in these six-story buildings.
07:17Just next to Beesdorf is Kaulsdorf, which is kind of a similar district.
07:22We asked local to paint a picture for us.
07:26It's more rural, I'd say I'd say.
07:28Kleinere Häuser, not so enge Straßen, weniger Betrieb.
07:32And that's right here, familienfreundlich, right?
07:34With the sea, exactly.
07:35Also, the worst thing is the B1.
07:39That's the big road there, loud and drecking.
07:42Okay.
07:56As you travel to the north side of Kaulsdorf, you start to see rougher-feeling neighborhoods
08:03with loads of street vendors.
08:05We move away from the detached family houses towards the lower-income high-rise estates
08:11that are more common to Marzahn and Hellersdorf, our next district.
08:16The area is mostly dominated by large housing complexes.
08:21But there are also very nice corners, like the Bockwindmühle and the Gardens of the World,
08:26one of Berlin's nicest spots, where you can enjoy dozens of international-themed gardens
08:32and frequent park-festivals.
08:35I think Marzahn-Hellersdorf is one of the most beautiful buildings in Berlin.
08:37It's a bit more of a rural area and green area.
08:42If you have a dog, you can spend a lot of fun.
08:44And also for children with lots of fun.
08:47Every block has a lot of fun with a lot of fun.
08:50And Brandenburg is also right there, yeah.
09:16Just around the corner, to the left, lies Alt-Hohenschönhausen, a district that couldn't
09:21be more different to its right neighbor.
09:24Mostly wealthy German families who have been in Berlin for generations are living here,
09:29in spacious houses and nice apartment buildings.
09:32Here in Alt-Hohenschönhausen is also a very important historical site.
09:37It is this prison here.
09:38In East Germany, this prison was used to keep political prisoners.
09:43Everybody the Stasi didn't like ended up here.
09:45And this is where they got their food prepared.
09:49We don't want to know what was in there, huh?
09:51It is a very nice district because you have those two nice lakes over here.
09:55One is the Orangsee, where you can even go in the water.
09:59There's like a little beach.
10:00And then there's the other one with the ducks.
10:11If we have a look further south, we find one of the most well-known neighborhoods in East Berlin,
10:17Lichtenberg.
10:18Lichtenberg is a very diverse district.
10:21On one hand, you have those huge apartment complexes,
10:24but then you also have those little townhouses, you know, that look like they're out of a village.
10:30And in between, you have these massive industrial complexes.
10:34Old ones, but also new ones.
10:36Probably one of the most special things about Lichtenberg is the Don Juan Center.
10:40It's Germany's biggest Asian market.
10:43It's a huge area with a lot of like single standing halls,
10:47that have all different kind of things in there.
10:49You can do your nails, you can buy clothing, food from Asia.
10:53So if you are from Asia and you're missing those huge markets that you have over there,
10:57this is the district for you.
10:59And that's probably the reason why Lichtenberg has the highest amount of Asian people living in Berlin.
11:05So there's especially a lot of Vietnamese people.
11:07They just love it here because they can go just to this market,
11:11buy all the food they know from back home, you know, for a good price.
11:14What's also special about Lichtenberg is its hospital.
11:18It has a massive hospital that looks like a palace.
11:21And in between all this weirdness, there's also a lot of green.
11:25There's even farm animals just in the middle of Lichtenberg.
11:33Just a bit further south, there is Rummelsburg, one of my personal favorites.
11:39The southern part contains mostly huge industrial buildings,
11:42but the northern part gives you the best of both worlds.
11:46It is close to all the craziness that is happening in Friedrichshain,
11:49but at the same time, you have the calm and quiet of the beautiful Rummelsburger Bay.
11:55One of Berlin's most popular clubs is also located here, the infamous Sisyphos.
12:01And thanks to being so close to major public transport junction Ostkreuz,
12:06you can go anywhere in Berlin in no time.
12:09Next, it's time for Weißensee.
12:13Weißensee is a small district just next to Prenzlauer Berg,
12:16and that's why it's very popular among young families who want to live close to Prenzlauer Berg,
12:22but cannot afford living in Prenzlauer Berg itself,
12:24because Prenzlauer Berg has become one of the most expensive districts in all Berlin.
12:28And if they move here to Weißensee, they can be in like 5 to 10 minutes in the action in
12:33Prenzlauer Berg,
12:33have the nice neighborhoods over there, the restaurants,
12:36and then come back quickly to the quiet of Weißensee.
12:39And as the name says, there's a little lake called Weißensee in here.
12:43There's also a Strandbad, which is a very popular spot in summer to hang out.
12:46And it's in general a very nice area to live.
12:49Not so many like single houses standing here, but more bigger apartment complexes.
12:58Last but not least, we are moving north to Buch.
13:02Buch is also called the Gesundheitsregion or health region,
13:06because it hosts various hospitals and a major campus with lots of research institutes on site.
13:13Buch itself may not be the prettiest neighborhood, but it is for sure the greenest,
13:18since forests, fields, and meadows are an integral part of the whole district.
13:24All right, we have covered most of the districts of Outer East Berlin.
13:28There are a few more, but if I were to cover all of them, this video would be at least
13:32one hour long,
13:33but these were the most unique ones.
13:36And in part three of the series, I will cover all the districts outside the Ring in West Berlin,
13:41and I think they will be even more fun to look at.
13:44Until then, enjoy Berlin!
13:46Thank you so much!
13:46Amen.
