Trump says Iran wants deal but won't meet US terms

President Donald Trump said Monday that Iran wants an agreement with the United States, but Tehran is not prepared to accept the conditions Washington considers necessary.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump emphasized that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains the central US objective.

“They want to make a deal, but they're not going to make the kind of a deal that I feel is necessary,” Trump said.

Explaining the US position, Trump added, “Look, we're in there for one reason.” He then made the nuclear issue clear, saying, “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”

Trump continued, “You understand that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and they won't have a nuclear weapon.”

Referring to previous US military action involving B-2 bombers, he said, “And right now, them building one after what we did previously with the B-2 bombers, it’s going to be going to be a long time.”

Trump concluded, “It's very simple. They can't have a nuclear war.”

His comments came as a 60-day US-Iran ceasefire expired, with disagreements continuing over Iran’s nuclear program and the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
