00:00That was the walk-off on Friday night by Christian Walker.
00:03That was the peak of the weekend.
00:04After that, it stunk for the Astros.
00:07Welcome in, everybody, on a Monday here on 95.7 The Fan,
00:10week two of the new FM signal.
00:13Got to test drive that bad boy,
00:15driving around town a lot this weekend.
00:16I enjoy our weekend shows that we've got going on.
00:19I listened to, on the way to practice,
00:21listened to Paul Gallant and Chris Partee yesterday
00:23and driving home from practice, Texans practice,
00:26listened to a little Brandon Scott and Zach Gelb.
00:28We've got some good stuff going on on the weekends here.
00:30I haven't been able to listen to Brandon and Zach together.
00:33Are they doing more of a nationally?
00:35No, it's Houston.
00:37Zach's plugging into Houston.
00:38In fact, they had Sean Salisbury on yesterday.
00:40Oh, okay, cool.
00:41He was good, man.
00:42Oh, good.
00:42All right, so Zach's diving in deep into Houston.
00:46And other markets, too.
00:47Zach, he had his show on the network,
00:50and then he didn't have his show on the network,
00:52but he still is with Odyssey, technically.
00:55And so he's kind of, from what I understand,
00:57he's kind of doing this in a few cities,
00:59where he's just keeping his hamstrings loose,
01:01you know, staying in the game.
01:03I did.
01:03I was asked to do a Rams post-game show on a podcast,
01:07so I was like, cool.
01:09It makes perfect sense.
01:10I'm an odd choice.
01:11Yeah.
01:12Not going to check the comments in this stream,
01:13but it was kind of fun because it's an NFC team,
01:18so I don't feel guilty kind of pretending I'm a Rams fan for three hours.
01:21So I was in.
01:22I was on the message boards.
01:23I was getting frustrated with Stetson Bennett the same way other Rams were.
01:28And then I was getting excited for Ty Simpson.
01:30Yeah.
01:30Look at this young kid.
01:31Best performance ever by a rookie quarterback.
01:35IMO.
01:35Yeah.
01:36Yeah.
01:36No.
01:37It was, so it's that time of year.
01:41Yeah.
01:42Yeah.
01:42Oh, yeah.
01:43The Ty Simpson thing was funny.
01:44People, there was, who was it?
01:46Chase Daniel.
01:46Chase Daniel.
01:47Everybody owes Dan Harlovsky a big apology.
01:49Don't worry, it'll be in Take-A-Mania on Friday.
01:52Yeah.
01:52Yeah.
01:52Like, everybody owes, because Harlovsky.
01:53Remember Harlovsky was the one voice in the wilderness
01:56about how good Ty Simpson was going to be?
01:58Yeah.
01:58Yeah.
01:58And Chase Daniel.
01:59Everybody owes Dan Harlovsky a big apology.
02:01I'm like, if you have a strong take on a week one preseason game,
02:07like it means something that's overarching and permanent,
02:09you should have your card pulled.
02:11More so with positive performances than negative performances.
02:14Graham Hurts went 16 for 18 in his final preseason game last year.
02:18Yeah.
02:18Where was Chase Daniel on that one?
02:20Exactly.
02:21Huh?
02:21Where's my apology?
02:22Exactly.
02:23For never having actually voiced any kind of opinion one way or the other.
02:26Graham Hurts.
02:27Right.
02:27Right.
02:28So, the Astros still in first place as we awake this morning.
02:32Up two games on the Rangers and four games on the Mariners.
02:36That's the most disappointing thing,
02:37is they had a chance to put away the team that has grown into the most annoying team
02:42for me, and that's the Seattle Mariners.
02:43Yeah.
02:43And they didn't do that this week.
02:45And, in fact, they kind of –
02:46You were feeling like you could put them in their grave.
02:49You could if you swept them.
02:50I mean, they were up five games on the Mariners going into the weekend.
02:53Yeah.
02:53You sweep them at home, and they're eight games out with a month and a half to play.
02:57I mean, that's tough sledding.
02:59It's not like they're eight games out and they're a good team.
03:02They would have been eight games out, and they'd have been ten games under .500.
03:05Yeah.
03:05And they sold at the deadline and stuff.
03:08So, I'm disappointed that the Mariners picked up ground on the Astros this weekend.
03:12I mean, the one thing – a realistic hope that you have for the Astros in this last
03:18third of the season is, okay, we don't know who the hell their pitchers are going to be.
03:22It's still TBA for the next upcoming two games.
03:27I've never seen anything like that.
03:29An upcoming series where your first two starters are TBD.
03:33I'll tell you what.
03:34TBD is – he's not very good as of late, but he's reliable.
03:38Yeah.
03:38He shows up a lot.
03:39Shows up like every third day.
03:41Yeah.
03:41Well, one of the things realistically you could hope for is, okay, Hunter Brown is – if
03:46you can just get back into classic Hunter Brown shape, then there we go.
03:50Yeah.
03:50And the problem is, there's a little detail.
03:53His four-seam fastball.
03:54Yeah.
03:54If – like, that's his bread and butter.
03:58Yeah.
03:58And it's not there.
03:59And he's walking, guys.
04:00It's like if you had a race car.
04:02Yeah.
04:02Like, well, what's the one drawback with this race car?
04:05It doesn't drive very fast.
04:06His motor.
04:06Yeah.
04:06Yeah.
04:07He doesn't drive fast.
04:08Yeah.
04:08Is that going to be an issue?
04:09Right.
04:10And when it does drive fast, it's all over the place.
04:12Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:12It's crashing into things.
04:13It can do – it could drive 10 miles per hour slower than everybody else, but with
04:18remarkable control.
04:19To your point, and I think this is what you're talking about, what you just brought up, and
04:22yeah, if you missed it, the Astros have a day off today, and they play the Angels for
04:26the next three games.
04:27And their starters for the next two games, at least as of last night, were to be determined.
04:34This might have been – this past weekend, I think it was Saturday's game.
04:38It was Saturday's game, because that's a game they lost 10-5.
04:42I tweeted this, and I still feel this way on Monday morning.
04:45That game, unless they go on a run to the World Series, because I think Dana Brown's in
04:51serious trouble, that game might have highlighted why Dana Brown is in serious trouble.
04:56Yeah.
04:56For two straight years at the trade deadline, he didn't make any pickups in the pitching
05:00staff, and his spin on it was, well, we get these guys back from injury, and that's
05:06just like making a trade.
05:08And I said this even before he said that at the trade deadline.
05:11You know this, because you do this show with me every day.
05:13I've been saying this since June and July, when I saw people talking about Wisneski and
05:17Blanco coming back.
05:18I've been saying you can't count on these guys, because exactly zero of these Tommy
05:22John guys have come back to be good.
05:23None of them.
05:24The best ones have just been inconsistent.
05:27Javier's had occasional good performances, but he's not been good.
05:31Urquidy and Garcia are out of the organization.
05:33McCullers wasn't Tommy John, but he never came back the same.
05:37And now, after Wisneski showed some promise the first couple starts, both of these guys
05:42in that game on Saturday, both of them, the two guys that Dana Brown said, well, this
05:46is just like making a trade.
05:48We got Blanco and Wisneski coming back, and I shook my head at the time.
05:51Both, I think it's ironic, gave up identical four-inning, five-earned run line scores in
05:57that game.
05:58They were both terrible in that game.
06:00And this is why you're TBD in a couple of starts.
06:03None of these guys coming back from injury have been good.
06:06So this is, to me, Dana Brown, that was Saturday.
06:10I said, Dana's done.
06:11This is an abject disaster, the way he handled the pitching in the offseason.
06:15You're right.
06:16It goes back to February.
06:17It goes back to February to the point where, hey, don't worry about the fact that none of
06:20the guys I brought in have actually been any good, that we've got guys coming back
06:26from the IL.
06:27I mean, you're sitting there like Javier's got a 6.680 ERA.
06:30Yep.
06:30Um, Emi, one of the guys he brought in, 5.29 ERA, Wisneski, 5.16 ERA.
06:37Don't worry about, Blanco hasn't been doing well, but he's in AAA now.
06:407.71 ERA.
06:427.7, yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:43Yeah, yeah, like Blanco wasn't Dana's acquisition.
06:46We should point out, Emi's got like the best ERA out of the guys you just named, and he's
06:50in the bullpen.
06:51He's almost a sub-5 ERA, Sean.
06:53He's banished out of, he's banished from a starting rotation that doesn't know who the
06:57starters are going to be for the next two games.
06:59Yeah.
07:00I don't know how they're doing it.
07:01And he was your marquee acquisition.
07:03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:04Like, this has been just, this has been, has there ever been a worse, somebody, some of
07:08you baseball historians out there, let me know.
07:10A guy, in terms of on a numbers basis, and money spent, because it wasn't a huge amount
07:17of money they spent, but they were relying on all of these guys coming in, at least a
07:22couple guys were going to work out.
07:23Yeah.
07:23And like Lambert, Lambert, the guy that they DFA'd at the beginning of the season.
07:27Yeah, the one guy they said wasn't good enough to be in the rotation.
07:29But, but, but, but, but, but, we got to worry about Lambert and load management as we round
07:34the season up.
07:35Chandler had a good piece on Thursday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic.
07:39Yeah, it annoys me that he made this point and that it's accurate.
07:42Yeah, that you got, well, he...
07:44I'm going to kill the messenger.
07:45He made, he made the point of a few things, but the one you're talking about is, it was
07:49one of those articles, like, seven things to think about with the Astros on an off day.
07:54So, the article dropped on Thursday last week, and he said, got to keep an eye on Peter Lambert's
07:59workload.
08:00The last time he went more than 130 innings was in 2018.
08:05Yeah.
08:06130 is, like...
08:07It's not that much.
08:08It's not that much.
08:09Yeah.
08:10Like, if Roger Clemens were on with us, he'd be like, 130 is, like, through June for me.
08:14130 is a warm-up.
08:15The other thing he brought up is that the Astros' offense is just way too top-heavy.
08:19And I didn't realize it was this bad.
08:21But the amount of the load that Jordan, Jeremy Pena, and Isak Paredes are carrying for this
08:27team right now, it does, that part, even though they're going to have to do a lot of moving
08:32around to accommodate it, probably with Jordan playing left field way more than we would
08:37want him to, especially last night when that ball bounced off his glove and rolled away.
08:43But that's when I see the possibility of Carlos Correa coming back.
08:48You need another bat in this lineup right now.
08:50You need another bat.
08:51But those three spots, Jordan, Pena, Paredes, combined OPS, 840, spots 4 through 9 in the
08:59order, combined OPS of nearly 200 points lower than that.
09:03It's in the high 600s.
09:04Yeah.
09:04So it's just, it's a very, very flawed team right now.
09:08And the only thing that's really working, two things, one, Jordan Alvarez, and two,
09:13the bullpen.
09:14The bullpen, which is in the, great, we've got a bullpen that can keep things close for
09:19the cavalry, which never arrives from your bats.
09:22Well, I'm telling you right now, if they make the postseason, I said this last week, and
09:25that bullpen game they had last week where the bullpen threw eight and a third scoreless
09:29innings, I think only hammered the point home.
09:31If they get into a wild card round and it goes three games, it's two out of three, it's going
09:35to go Hunter, Lambert, bullpen game.
09:37Yeah.
09:38There won't be a third starter.
09:39You've got to, and it's going to be one of those, those, those high risk, high variance type
09:44of scenarios where, all right, I mean, it's going to have to be an immaculate bullpen
09:48game because you got to preserve some of those arms for a fourth or a fourth or a sixth game.
09:53Well, and especially if, again, to Chandler's point, if the top of the order's not clicking,
09:57it better be an immaculate bullpen game because the score's going to be two to one.
10:00Right.
10:01You know?
10:03So we were at practice Saturday and Sunday this weekend.
10:06We worked this weekend, people.
10:08I don't know.
10:08As you drive in on Monday, Seth and I were working this weekend.
10:11Yeah, well, and D'Amico, I think D'Amico tests in the mental toughness of these guys,
10:16wants to get them out there at 1 p.m. for these midday practices.
10:20I assumed, well, clearly this will be inside.
10:22No.
10:23No, both of them outside.
10:24Now, we should be clear, those practices were scheduled for those times before the Texans
10:30greatly disappointed him on Thursday.
10:32Oh, yeah, this wasn't like a punishment.
10:33No, no, no, it wasn't a punishment, although it would have been justified based on the way
10:36they played on Thursday.
10:37Yeah.
10:38They were not good.
10:39They were good.
10:39You know what the, you know, and as it goes,
10:41with D'Amico, D'Amico spent so much more time with the offense over the last couple
10:44years.
10:45But his, I think his disgust with the team was more about the defensive effort than it
10:50was the offense.
10:51Yeah.
10:52The offense, the offense did better.
10:54When I went back and I watched, you know, the, the all 22 and everything, I think the
10:59offense by and large, they had their issues, obviously.
11:03But I was happier with it than I thought I was going to be.
11:06The defense and the fact that the linebackers especially were so passive until Aiden Fisher
11:10came in and played like a linebacker.
11:13I think that's what was bothering him.
11:14Cause you could see it like during the game, during the game, I'm wondering like, okay,
11:18what the hell's going on with these backers?
11:19And I'm used to watching Aziz Elshire and Henry Toa Toa and EJ Speed versus the run where
11:24they are just flying up like demons out of hell.
11:26Yep.
11:27And, uh, we were not getting that from the Texas.
11:30And one of the, at least one of those guys is going to have a significant role on this
11:34team.
11:34Yeah.
11:34The only linebackers that didn't play in that game were Aziz and Henry Toa Toa.
11:39And so when they're in a base defense, one of the guys that was, one of the guys that
11:44was getting pushed around on Thursday, whether it's Wade Wood as or, or, uh, Jamal Hill,
11:49Marte Mapu.
11:50Marte Mapu.
11:51Yeah.
11:51Yeah.
11:51Like they're, they're going to, uh, you know, they're, they're going to, um, uh, be part of
11:55this thing.
11:56So, um, so yeah, that was, but we're going to, we're going to get your rewatch observations
12:01at seven o'clock today.
12:02You got some rewatch observations from now?
12:05I mean, we're just going to, we're going to leave it blank.
12:06Well, we will give some good recipes out for cookies.
12:09Yes, I have some.
12:10Good deal.
12:11Um, here was D'Amico Ryan's.
12:13We're going to have cake at one.
12:14Do you have cake?
12:15Yeah.
12:15Yeah.
12:16We've got cake.
12:17Just making sure.
12:18Uh, this was D'Amico Ryan's.
12:20They got the Raiders coming to town this week.
12:22Tomorrow is joint practice, uh, at nine o'clock.
12:25And then cooking burgers at 1130.
12:27Cal's going to be out there.
12:28I'm part of his burger army.
12:30The, uh, the, okay.
12:32So the, the combined practices, like this is, this is big for the Texans starters who didn't
12:38play the other day, obviously.
12:39I think they're, they're, they're treating pre the, this combined practice is basically
12:45the first preseason game.
12:46And then D'Amico said the starters are going to play.
12:48Anybody's healthy is going to play in the preseason game.
12:51So that's, that's preseason game number two, like, like normal.
12:53And really the offensive line is where it's completely unsettled at this point.
12:58Other than that, I know Keelan Rutledge is going to start.
13:01Yeah.
13:02And, uh, and I, and I think Ariadne Urseri is going to start at left tackle.
13:06I don't know if Keelan Rutledge is going to start at center or guard.
13:08Yeah.
13:08There's still a lot of competition going on there.
13:10It's that, that position group's crazy right now.
13:13It's just in terms of they're shuffling guys within layers of the depth chart.
13:17They're shuffling guys.
13:18They're shuffling guys horizontally and vertically on the depth chart.
13:21And also that's, I mean, there's a chance that Rutledge could start at one of the guards
13:27and I like, they could move Wyatt Teller to right guard and to have Ed Ingram on the bench.
13:31I think it's, I think it's genuinely wide open.
13:34It would be a disaster.
13:34You gave Ed Ingram 13 million a year.
13:37Yeah.
13:37I mean, disastrous signing.
13:39I mean, if you've got two good guards out there, I don't really care.
13:41I don't know if it's, I mean, it's disastrous in the short term.
13:44If he ends up, if he ends up, this is, I struggle with this too,
13:48because he's already proven that he can play in the system in the first two weeks,
13:51the first two weeks of training camp, it's dicey to evaluate offensive linemen
13:54because there's, there's just a lot more to work on and get right.
13:57So I try to be patient and people get annoyed as hell with me.
14:01But it's, there was, there was more good than I expected to see when I watched the backup
14:07offensive linemen.
14:08I'm excited for seven o'clock now.
14:09I can't wait to hear.
14:10Um, Hey, I was on a KHOU last night.
14:13I know.
14:14I saw you.
14:14It's weird.
14:15When I go on KHOU, it was just me and Zach and Jason Bristol.
14:19And I, that, you know, you go on KHOU on the regular during the season.
14:23So I was there last night and I'm like, man, I feel like I'm at Seth's family reunion,
14:27but Seth's not here.
14:28You know, like I'm hanging out with a bunch of Seth's relatives, which is, they're nice.
14:31They're fun relatives.
14:32I enjoyed myself.
14:33Traveling salesman.
14:34Yeah.
14:35Seth just can't make it this time.
14:37Um, but it was fun.
14:38We did, uh, this is where I credit Jason Bristol.
14:41He's fun going on with, cause he's very thoughtful.
14:43We did a full KHOU sports extra, uh, episode.
14:50It was all Pender polls and he, but he made them up.
14:53I did.
14:54Pender polls up.
14:54He had hashtag Pender poll is one of the graphics on the screen right there.
14:58It was a good night for the brand last night.
14:59Did you, uh, did you, and then did you actually put the Pender polls out?
15:02No, because there were like seven of them.
15:04Yeah.
15:05Yeah.
15:05No, I should.
15:06Yeah.
15:06I've got them all.
15:07So you guys,
15:07so you guys voted on the, on the Pender polls.
15:10Yep.
15:10Yep.
15:11Yep.
15:11No, Jason's really, really good with that stuff.
15:13Jason was, um, it was funny.
15:14Cause when I first started doing sports extra with Bob Allen, Bob Allen was hilarious.
15:18Cause Bob was just like old school sports reporter.
15:23There's kind of like, I don't know, like almost, um, like the fun side of anchorman type stuff.
15:28Yeah.
15:28Um, but it was stressful for me because I didn't know what the hell I was doing on television
15:32or anything.
15:33Uh, but I didn't always know what was going on and, uh, and it was fun.
15:37But then Jason came in and, uh, and he's really super, super organized and he made it
15:42really, really easy.
15:43He's creative too.
15:44I like that.
15:44Yeah.
15:45Yep.
15:45He's really good.
15:46So if you missed it, I'm sure it's up on the, uh, KHOU stream, but that was fun last night.
