Transcript
00:01a sweep of the boston red sox in five in a row for the astros matching their longest winning
00:08streak of 2025 they started the year 0-2 and they head to the west coast plumber 5-2
00:14there you go already already we're a week in and they've already matched their longest winning
00:21streak of last year ladies and gentlemen you're houston astros ladies and gentlemen
00:25pain and pendergast please hold your applause till 10 a.m this morning that's all we ask there's one
00:30thing i know about baseball it's that this will last oh yeah and uh stretch out your graph what
00:38are they on pace for 120 wins or so something like that it's as simple as that that's all right
00:46let's
00:46start off the show this way listen everybody even if they're a really good baseball team they're not
00:51going to win this many games on no screw that screw that no because you know what i did last
00:55night set no no no no no you know what i did last night i uh as i was scrolling
01:00through twitter you
01:01know just doing the usual you know show prep and looking at things people are saying and finding
01:06numbers and things like that yeah there was a tweet that had yordan's numbers so far this year what
01:10did i do i divided 162 by seven and then i started multiplying baby yeah and when you divide 162
01:18by seven
01:19you get 23 and a little bit of change so i just started multiplying all of yordan's stats by 23
01:25i'm like oh six some pays for 69 home runs and 69 doubles in 130 something rbi uh so yeah
01:35that's i
01:35i uh i'm gonna i'm gonna allow myself to get caught up in this start being what this is gonna
01:41look like
01:41all year long why not no i a hundred percent as far as look yeah obviously the numbers and
01:46everything they're on pace for 116 wins right now sounds right to me yeah that's what i saw i was
01:51there seth yeah i was closer than most people listening to this show right now last night i was
01:5610 feet away from the field last night and i will give you my expert opinion being that close
02:01this is 116 win team sean you know who's done you know who's gotten 116 wins you're gonna get one
02:07of
02:08these right uh the seattle mariners of 2001 i know that yeah and then the 1906 chicago cubs that one
02:14i
02:14would not i would have been here a while yeah i would uh i figured i might as well just
02:18do the
02:18just uh service we don't need to draw out the suspense on this one while you figure it out uh
02:24they're
02:24they're doing a lot of things really well in that the look obviously some of the offensive
02:31deluges and everything you can't count on those happening all the time you know i don't know
02:36shelling crochet and making them work i don't know maybe not shelling but just me uh giving crochet
02:42some very uncharacteristically bad appearances even last year's astros yeah that i was gonna say they
02:47beat them up pretty good last year too i look i i think knocking crochet out let me back up
02:53the red
02:54socks definitely went into that game yesterday saying we need more than five innings out of
02:58your crochet you know they were i mean they they ran his pitch count up in the first inning up
03:02to
03:02it was 30 plus wasn't it wasn't that oh yeah it was uh in the first inning yeah and that
03:07was very
03:07very encouraging because we talked on the show yesterday one of our listeners had said well listen
03:11i'll i'll believe in this if and i'll get excited about it if if they take crochet to the woodshed
03:18and they they really made crochet work ran them out of the game early and they they did it in
03:26this
03:26manner in which they've been doing the pitch selections a lot better than it was last year
03:31he's there he's the runner-up for the cy young yeah like by that standard they did run his ass
03:36out of
03:36the game what would we be saying if if the red socks did to hunter brown two nights ago what
03:43the what
03:43the astros did to crochet yes oh yeah yeah we'd be worried about hunter brown at this point given
03:48that if he didn't have he didn't have a vintage hunter brown performance in the first game despite
03:53not allowing any runs it still wasn't vintage hunter brown yeah and then if he got if he had
03:58crochets performance in his second appearance we'd be worried about him yeah yeah yeah so that's that's
04:04kind of that's kind of the lens i look at it through the other thing that was cool among many
04:08things yesterday the astros won six to four over the red sox um they sweep the series they're leading
04:15baseball in offense right now it's things are really good for the astros it's almost it's good
04:19enough now where i'm like oh day off no let's keep it going but they're traveling out to the west
04:24coast
04:24everybody can use a day off obviously um but the the revenge home run by carlos correa where two
04:33batters before uh yordan alvarez yordan alvarez got got uh beamed by garrett crochet and showed
04:43far i mean yordan alvarez gets hit by pitches you know on a fairly regular you know a normal basis
04:49by
04:50big league standards he was pissed i mean he threw his bat down he glared out at garrett crochet
04:56i don't think garrett crochet was trying to hit him there was already a runner on base and i think
05:01there was nobody out i don't think garrett crochet in what was a 2-2 game at the time
05:05is trying to create more problems on the base paths or more potential for runs for the astros
05:11but yordan was pissed and astro fans i think were also kind of pissed because we know that
05:16yordan getting hit by a pitch can can be a little more complicated than the average human being
05:21getting hit by a right a little more injury prone but carlos correa avenged he got he got revenge
05:28on behalf of his teammate correa drives one deep to left field forget about it five two astros cc with
05:39a three-run shot into the crawford boxes the back to the future part about that one seth is remember
05:45the it was either the covid year or 20 it might have been 2021 when it was correa's last year
05:51under
05:51contract to the astros the first time where he was great that year he was the top five runner up
05:56for
05:56the mvp he was great in the postseason and he had that one home run where he looked into the
06:00dugout
06:01in the postseason might have been against the red sox actually in the postseason that year because
06:04they played the red sox in the alcs in fact i think it was where he hit that home run
06:08he knew it the
06:09second he hit it and the first thing he did was stare into the astros dugout and tapping his tapping
06:14his watch yeah tapping his wrist it's my time he didn't tap his wrist but he knew it when he
06:19hit it
06:19and he just stared right into the astros dugout like like like swaggy carlos correa it was uh yeah
06:27if if it weren't for that situation right then you'd think uh it's a little bit much correa but no
06:32it was it was the perfect much it was the perfect amount of much yeah yeah it was great and
06:38uh and
06:38they went up five two and they were able to you know they were able to uh to bring the
06:42ship in as
06:43they say here was uh correa after the game on the home run after yordan got hit by that pitch
06:47oh you
06:48always hate to see your best hitter get drilled like that and uh you know hours was obviously
06:52pretty upset after a couple pitches almost hit him so you know you you take a little extra
06:57special when it's like that hello and joe spada talked about it too reaction to that in the dugout
07:03and then and then two days later was great carlos made him pay that's what happened carlos made him
07:08pay there you go carlos made him carlos made him pay yeah yeah that felt good that felt good the
07:14i don't
07:15know if you always i uh i've never i've never been able to muster up the hatred for the red
07:21socks as
07:22i have for the yankees and i i think i don't i'm not sure exactly why that is i think
07:27a little bit of
07:28it is they were they were a little bit of the victim of the witch hunt of the sign stealing
07:34era
07:34um not as much of a victim as the astros were but uh their manager got suspended yeah yeah and
07:40it's
07:40saying they need a former astro and everything all like that um so i think there's part of that
07:45but i'm i'm working on it and there's something about trevor's story with that error that he had in
07:50the first inning that that made me hate them even more yeah and it was something about just
07:56i boy when the astros who have yet to commit an error this season they're among three teams that
08:02haven't committed an error the red so that's amazing by the way you told me that before the show
08:07i was like holy crap i had no idea well every time i see another team and we've seen a
08:11lot of it
08:12with the angels and the red sox in these last in these first games where they commit these stupid
08:18errors and you just think not my kid you know it's like when you see somebody else's kid get in
08:23trouble anyway yeah my kid's got his issues i'm so glad not like this yeah that guy's not my kid
08:32look at that kid yeah he's in juvie what a schmuck yeah kid's got a little beer my kid no
08:39a little
08:39beer in the trunk of the car we can live with that my kid's got c's and d's but he's
08:44not that
08:44yeah yep no astro zero errors so far on the season that's amazing they're batting a thousand
08:50and fielding yeah that's nice that's gifted and talented right there that's that is yeah it is i got
08:56a little bumper sticker on my car my kids my child hasn't committed an error yet this season
09:021000 fielding percentage yeah oh my god yeah that's i'm like and i'm conspicuously asking
09:07the red sox parents at dinner parties well so how's uh how's trevor story doing in the field this year
09:13how's trevor doing interesting knowing full well what the answer is that's funny i wouldn't know
09:18what that's like my kid hasn't committed an error yet my kid makes spinning throws from the back of
09:23second base sorry it's the opposite sorry about it like it gets revenge when your kid's being my
09:30kid uh so um yeah that's been that's been great to see um the uh how about altuve with another
09:37successful challenge altuve amongst the league leaders in challenges yeah yeah yeah correa was
09:44this correct did i put correa was this correa or a spot of ban i'm sorry it was oh it
09:48was correa
09:48no it's definitely correa uh talking about jose altuve's newfound amazing eye and ability to take
09:55pitches this season i think you know we talked about this today i think he's realizing that with
09:59the abs and in the zone now like you know his boxes it's really it's really hard to throw your
10:04best
10:05stuff and land it in that box so um he understands that he knows they gotta come to him he
10:10knows that
10:11every pitch that he sees that it's not in zone he can challenge now so it's not like back in
10:15the day
10:15you get called a pitch a couple inches off the plate and then you your eyes will go there to
10:19try to defend with two strikes now you're just keeping your eyes in the middle and i think he's
10:23doing a really good job with that it's so tempting right now seth because things are things are going
10:26so well with the astros especially offensively but as you point out too defensively as well i want to
10:32take every move they've made like in the last several months and make those moves the reason why
10:37everything's going well right now like i want to give credit to like the change of the hitting
10:41coaches i want to give all credit to like what a move to change the hitting coaches i tell you
10:46what
10:46a great move not yet not just that but the uh the hierarchy structure too you've got one hitting
10:52coach we don't need one hitting coach no one voice one voice and that is the voice of victor
10:57rodriguez that is the reason among other reasons that i'm about to say as to why things are better and
11:04this is where i go back to the carlos correa trade and you bringing up the defense i want to
11:07say like
11:08he's had an infectious effect on the defense so he's such an elite defender and he holds people
11:14accountable that that the team as a whole is playing better defense you know what even that
11:19real quick even that cut right there where carlos correa said you know altuve and i were you know
11:23just sitting around the clubhouse talking about this abs yeah and this taking pitches that carlos
11:28correa is back and that's probably somebody whose opinion altuve really respects it's almost like
11:34what bregman brought to the team when he was here you know right well there's um with altuve it's
11:39interesting too yeah maybe just the comfort okay the going back to yesterday and i can't remember
11:46whether it was the radio or the tv broadcast that said this um because i was listening on both i'm
11:51guessing it was uh okay regardless um the play is a pop-up there's only one runner on base so
11:57it's not
11:58infield infield fly rule um and altuve let the ball drop yeah and um i i can't remember i apologize
12:06if
12:06it was blum or sparky i think it was sparky actually sparky said you know what i think that um
12:12i think
12:12that correa might have been yelling to altuve to let the ball drop absolutely and you end up getting
12:17the runner out at second it's a faster guy yeah instead of instead of uh and so that was and
12:24you
12:24know potentially if the if the base runner is lazy getting to first or something maybe something goes
12:28on there um but yeah i think that correa and altuve in the comfort level there are we seeing a
12:34smarter
12:34version of altuve are we seeing uh definitely seeing a smarter altuve we're a hundred percent seeing a
12:41smarter version of of altuve and is it because of correa yeah yeah or in part at least right when
12:48it
12:48comes to altuve being your team leader think about this think about the the uncomfortable dynamic with
12:53the texans where laramie tunsell is one of the best players on the team and yet you're trying to
12:57get all of these offensive players these young guys to do things a certain type of way whereas
13:02tunsell has a reputation of being a guy who doesn't do anything that he doesn't have to
13:07nothing extra yeah he's a vet vet he's a vet vet you've got the quarterback saying oh he's a vet
13:12vet
13:12doesn't have doesn't do anything extra out there just enough yeah it's hard so with altuve when
13:17you're trying to get better pitch selection from the entire squad he's he's showing more discretion
13:24at the plate than he has in a long long time i think there's something it's ever i i was
13:29joking
13:29about attributing all the great things that are happening due to decision you know like i want to
13:34i want to take seven games and make it feel like these were 162 game decisions and maybe ultimately
13:40they are that's a really good point the the lead the lead by action i'm gonna do these things also
13:46think about this this is an astonishing stat with altuve got this from matt kawahara so altuve swung
13:54at 31.8 of the pitches that he's seen in six games okay that is there are only three hitters
14:01with at
14:01least 10 plate appearance who have a lower swing rate alts like so he's got the fourth lowest swing
14:07rate free swing at altuve as of right now she has the low the fourth lowest swing rate in the
14:13league
14:14in the league not on the team in the league so he's so he's got a 30 what is it
14:1931.8 swing rate
14:20last year was 50 2024 was 51.5 this is a completely different altuve yeah that's significant man
14:28that's and then the altuve we had we liked the old altuve was okay it was fine it was aging
14:34it was
14:35you know it was frustrating that was a frustrating altuve but he would make up for it in other ways
14:39you know who's you know what yeah you know what this reminds me of what does it remind you of
14:43without without the drug addiction issues this feels like the older version of brett farve
14:49where brett farve had to learn how to become a little bit less of a gunslinger
14:53and a more just a more judicious a wiser football player as he got older and altuve who hasn't had
15:01the
15:02substance abuse issues but still was a free swinging he was a gunslinger yeah he was a he was
15:07the the baseball version of a gunslinger at the plate and now we're seeing a more refined version
15:12of him and it's awesome yeah i mean this great the the if anything like altuve might end up
15:20regardless of how his numbers look at the end of the year but just by virtue of having more
15:26discretion at the plate he might end up being the best version of altuve we've seen yeah yeah
15:31it's really really cool well and as we head into seven games in as we head into yeah but if
15:37you're
15:38looking to come to a show that's not going to hit you with it's a long season this is the
15:41show
15:42yeah that's what you want uh over the top enthusiasm over the best hitting team in baseball right now
15:47it's five and two i haven't looked at the standings this will be okay this will be my first
15:51time looking at the standings all season i'm being totally honest right like a social media
15:56product yeah yeah box opening yeah like this is a reaction sure you make a lot of big faces and
16:02go
16:02way over the top i am i'm reacting this is me reacting to some horrific videos do this do this
16:06uh react like a gen z okay you gotta go oh okay okay here we go i'm clicking on standings
16:12scroll scroll
16:16oh let's go let's go that's right yeah let's go the astros are a half game up and they are
16:23first
16:23place oh oh let's go then you gotta splicing the gif of the kid making the face in the schoolyard
16:33yeah yeah yeah or the kid at the soccer game where everybody's pumped up but that kid's even more
16:39pumped up than everybody yeah yeah shaking his fist yes yes they are five and two the rangers
16:45are four and two the trash mariners are three and four and guess who the guess who the astros are
16:51headed out to california to go play the one in five athletics one of my favorite moments from these
16:59first seven games was when lance was being interviewed the other night and he caught himself and corrected
17:03himself uh he said the a's he said we gotta go out to oakland to see the a's i go
17:08excuse me excuse me
17:09the aflo gotta go up to california to see the athletic without even a city in front of it yeah
17:15let's just it looks so stupid in the standings houston astros texas rangers seattle mariners los
17:21angeles angels athletics just athletics that's it just like uh they're tumbleweeds what a stupid team
17:28just out there you know bouncing around the west yeah the the western states we don't even know
17:34where they are yeah they're just barnstorming whereabouts unknown yeah yep yep playing in a
17:38band box boy how about the astros hottest hitting team in baseball getting to go play in that yard
17:44out in sacramento this weekend dude you better block out not use well yes you seth but you the audience
17:50you better block out a ton of time these next few days because these games are going to be long
17:56and
17:56the astros are going to be scoring like 18 runs a game in these games i the they did us
18:00the honor
18:01at least of you know a couple of these couple of these games you and i won't have to wake
18:05up to
18:05work in the morning uh 8 40 p.m tomorrow yep and oh oh okay we got a 305 p
18:11.m on saturday and a 305
