00:00What happened, Des? How'd you get into comedy?
00:02I got into comedy because I was in Ireland, I was in the Drama Society,
00:05and actually I'd stopped drinking when I was 19 because I definitely had a problem with booze,
00:10which probably was put on fast forward by living in Ireland.
00:13So anyway, a guy that was in recovery was like a resident MC of this comedy club,
00:19and he just kept pushing me to try.
00:20And eventually I gave in, and the minute I did it,
00:23just like the first time I had a drink, I knew that it was going to be hard for me
00:26to stop.
00:27The first time I got on stage, it was like, I'm doing this forever.
00:31I was always somebody that liked to make people love to be in the center of attention.
00:35I'm a child of the 80s. I loved the 80s boom of American stand-up,
00:39but it never even entered my head that I could do that.
00:42So it was only for this comic pushed me to try.
00:45Frank Toomey was his name. God rest him. He's no longer with us.
00:48But he pushed me, and then that was it.
00:50The minute I was on stage, I was like, this is the thing for me.
