00:00Alright, we talked about it.
00:01Obviously, the Commanders defeated the Dolphins
00:04wherever it's worth, 27 on Friday.
00:07It's not worth anything, trust me.
00:09It's 27 winning the last year.
00:10By the way, who'd you bet on, Jason?
00:16I think I bet the under.
00:17I think.
00:19You don't remember.
00:20I mean, I bet on pretty much every game.
00:22You did.
00:22But, I mean, I'd put a dollar on it,
00:25two dollars on it.
00:26I think I'd put them in a parlay with the under.
00:29The game was at home.
00:30By the way, if that would have been week one
00:32and they played all their starters,
00:33they would have killed the Dolphins.
00:35Yeah, I think so.
00:36That's what they did in the control scrimmage.
00:38They would have beat them 31-10.
00:39Sleep on Malik Willis a little bit.
00:41You know, as Jason mentioned,
00:43they rested a large group of key players,
00:45as many as 26 who went through the names
00:47in the last segment.
00:48Don't have to do that again,
00:49but including Jaden Daniels, the big ones,
00:52Terry McLaurin, Stephon Diggs, etc.
00:54Didn't even play Chig.
00:56The Dolphins did get a 7-0 lead early
00:59as their first-team offense led by Malik Willis
01:02and Devon H.
01:03And drove 14 plays for 93 yards.
01:06Wasn't a great look for the commander's new defense,
01:09but as we talked about,
01:11weren't many starters out there.
01:14You had Sonny Stiles.
01:16You had Leo Chennault,
01:17but that was about it.
01:19That was basically it.
01:20Yeah.
01:20Willis went 4-for-5 with 43 yards.
01:24Had a couple runs.
01:26Caleb Douglas made a nice one-handed catch.
01:29That was a great catch.
01:30Commanders then got it to 3-7,
01:337-3, whatever you want to call it.
01:35I think it was Jake Moody.
01:37You would never call it 3-7.
01:38You didn't just say that.
01:39That's how it's listed here.
01:41Jake Moody, that was his doink.
01:44Then Robert Henry scored in that 22-yard run
01:47in the second quarter.
01:49Put him up 10-7.
01:49He seems like a good kid when JP was interviewing him
01:52after the game.
01:52He seems like a really good kid.
01:53Most of these guys are pretty good dudes.
01:55Yeah, yeah, I agree.
01:56They all do a lot of volunteer stuff.
02:00I've always said that these athletes,
02:03we give them a hard time,
02:04but they're pretty good dudes.
02:06The commanders then took a 17-7 lead
02:08when Catron Allen punched in a one-yard touchdown.
02:10Both those guys had big days.
02:13What did they rush for combined?
02:14About 160 yards.
02:17Robert Henry had 75 yards on 12 carries.
02:20Catron, fat man, had 85 yards on 23 carries.
02:24Both had touchdowns.
02:27After the first drive, they locked down defensively
02:33three interceptions, including one by safety Kwon Martin
02:38early on.
02:40That was good, right?
02:42Yeah.
02:44That's something, by the way, that the real defense
02:46needs to correct heading into 20-26
02:49because they were horrendous at forcing takeaways last year.
02:53That number needs to go way up.
02:55So after, you know, then Stevens kicked a 41-yarder
02:58in the fourth quarter.
03:00After that initial 14-play, 93-yard drive by the Dolphins,
03:04they didn't score again, obviously.
03:06So that was good.
03:08That was a good look for Washington.
03:09Commanders, end of the day with 334 total yards,
03:13174 rushing on 41 carries, 21 first downs,
03:19one interception thrown by Sam Hartman,
03:23three interceptions by the defense, which was good.
03:26The Dolphins had 226 total yards,
03:29and three interceptions all thrown by backup quarterbacks.
03:34Cakes, you weren't here last week.
03:35One thing we talked about was the NFL.com rankings that came out,
03:39power rankings, where the Commanders were 28th.
03:42I saw that.
03:43Did you see who was dead last?
03:44That was kind of eye-opening.
03:45Who was dead last?
03:47I'm going to guess the Cleveland Browns?
03:49Miami Dolphins.
03:50Miami Dolphins.
03:51Okay.
03:53So, obviously, the key concern was Mariota getting injured on the handoff.
03:59He only played, what, about four snaps or so before he sprained his MCL,
04:04which we found out later, in his right knee.
04:07He's expected to miss the rest of the preseason.
04:09But I believe, at least initially, Dan Quinn has said that they're not going to
04:13sign on the quarterback.
04:14It does kind of put into question, though,
04:18whether or not Jaden Daniels is going to see any preseason time.
04:22And I think J.P. Finley even asked him that,
04:24and he kind of acknowledged that that might play into his thinking.
04:29So, we'll have to see.
04:30So, we're probably going to need a lot more.
04:32Sam Hartman and Ethan Cakes, you could say his name.
04:36Kaliak Manis.
04:38Kaliak Manis.
04:38Kaliak Manis.
04:40Kaliak Manis.
04:41They'll probably handle most of the remaining preseason snaps.
04:43Good news, though, that Nick Allegretti,
04:46who's penciled in to be the starting center,
04:48he should be back today, right?
04:49All right, John Bates back tomorrow.
04:52I think today there's no public training camp practice.
04:56There is tomorrow, though, and I believe Wednesday.
04:59We will be there tomorrow.
05:02Practice starts around 830.
05:04Are they off today?
05:06Don't know the answer to that, Jason.
05:07I thought they were off today.
05:09They practiced yesterday.
05:10But they'll be...
05:11Because they were off Saturday.
05:12Game was Friday.
05:13They were off Saturday.
05:15I think they practiced yesterday.
05:16I think they're off today.
05:17Yeah, so they'll be back at it on Tuesday.
05:19We'll be there.
05:20And then they'll also be back at it for the public on Wednesday.
05:25So...
05:26Mm-hmm.
05:27But good news that John Bates and Nick Allegretti will be back.
05:32I guess, as we talked about also earlier,
05:35Trey Amos, still don't know, don't have a return date with him.
05:42Yeah, that's what DQ said.
05:43I don't know.
05:44Well, I kind of like to throw it out there to people.
05:46After you saw what's happened to Jeremiah Love,
05:48who else got hurt in the first week of preseason of notes?
05:52I know Love was the one...
05:54He was the biggest name.
05:55That was the big one.
05:56And then Mariota kind of going down,
05:57which, again, is just on a handoff.
05:59Could happen, obviously, in practice.
06:01In a handoff, it could happen just working in front of the mirror.
06:05Well, Jamal Adams was lost for the year for the Vikings.
06:08Yeah, that one hurts.
06:09Do you think the commanders will potentially switch gears
06:14because maybe the plan all along was not to play Jaden?
06:17But do you think it's smart to just sit Jaden here
06:21for these next two games?
06:22Because I don't know that the...
06:24I just don't know that the juice is worth the squeeze,
06:27especially coming off of last year.
06:29Oh, Jackson Dart got blown up on a blitz.
06:30Jackson Dart got killed.
06:32Yeah, he came back in.
06:33But that's also the reason why you look at it and you go,
06:35whoa, it's really worth it.
06:37I was kind of surprised he came back in.
06:38His running back completely whiffed on the...
06:40That looks like you or me trying to block.
06:43He's bitter, though.
06:43They had to go to the blue tent.
06:45Yeah.
06:46They thought it was ridiculous.
06:47He did.
06:48Yes.
06:49Yeah.
06:50He sounded appreciative.
06:51He's like, I get what the NFL's trying to do and saves,
06:53but I don't think he wants to go to the blue tent
06:56every time he takes a sack.
06:58By the way, how does the blue tent on the sidelines
07:00not have a sponsor?
07:01What is the NFL doing?
07:03Yeah, I don't know.
07:03Blue tent's featured all the time.
07:05Who should sponsor it, Cakes?
07:07Some sort of healthcare company, I would think.
07:09Yeah.
07:09I mean, it would make sense.
07:10Makes sense.
07:11Make all sense in the world.
07:12But do you think this will change DQ's thinking?
07:17I actually think it might.
07:18I'm going to say yes.
07:19I actually think it might.
07:21Because, you know, Tunsell's obviously out for the year.
07:24Allegretti's just coming back,
07:25so you're probably not going to start the offensive line.
07:30Yeah, you're going to put him back there behind a makeshift offensive line.
07:32No, no, no, he wouldn't do that.
07:33Second or third stringers.
07:34Let's assume they sit Jaden.
07:35Does that mean, then, no Terry this week, too?
07:38Probably.
07:40No Gibbs.
07:40No Diggs.
07:42Oh, Diggs.
07:43Yeah, Diggs.
07:43He's probably going to be out.
07:44Are they going to sit Allegretti, let him practice,
07:47but not really play him?
07:47I don't know why you would play him.
07:49Maybe different.
07:50Sit Cosme.
07:50Sit Connerly again.
07:51Just keep the big dogs clean.
07:53I don't want to lose money again.
07:55But it may be different because there's no joint practice this week.
07:58Right.
07:59It might be.
08:01It seems like the joint practice just wiped out all the players.
08:04But if you're just going to play backups like this,
08:07it's almost like, why are we even doing the preseason?
08:10Like, just do the joint practices.
08:12Well, that's why the owners want to add another regular season game
08:14and cut the preseason down to about one.
08:17Can you imagine they used to have six preseason games back in the day?
08:20When was that?
08:21I don't remember that.
08:22It's outrageous.
08:23It's before our time.
08:23Especially when you consider colleges, they just go hard week one.
08:27Now, colleges often, they'll play a cupcake in week one.
08:30You can't really do that in the NFL.
08:32That's essentially a preseason game.
08:34You know, when you play like Wofford or somebody.
08:38I think the Terps play in Hampton.
08:40The Terps play in Hampton.
08:41I mean, look, that's what you want.
08:43You want a warm-up.
08:44Right.
08:44Let's see where you stand.
08:45But defensively, it's going to be kind of annoying if, and I get it,
08:50I would support the team.
08:51But as a fan, it's going to be annoying if there's no Payne, there's no Kinlaw,
08:56there's no O-Way, there's no Chason, there's no Dorrance Armstrong,
09:01there's no Mikey Sanisro, there's no Nick Cross, there's no Jeremy Reeves.
09:04Like, if there's none of your guys.
09:07I'm Sean McVay-ing it.
09:09Oh, my gosh.
09:10I'm just pulling them aside saying, you guys just need to be ready for week one.
09:14They might sprinkle in a couple of starters on the defense,
09:17but I can't imagine they're going to play a lot of those guys.
09:20So maybe you play Sanistro?
09:23Yeah, maybe a couple of DBs.
09:24Maybe you play Stiles again.
09:26Maybe you play Tim Saddle?
09:29Yeah, maybe two or three guys.
09:31I can't imagine they're going to start the entire defensive line.
09:33Can I get a peek of Chig?
09:34I'd like a peek of Chig.
09:36Yeah, you'll get a peek of him September 13th at the link.
09:40Right.
09:40That's when you're going to get a peek of him.
09:42Cakes your answer.
09:43From 1970 through 1977, the NFL season consisted of 14 regular season games
09:49and six exhibition games.
09:51That is just awful.
09:52I cannot imagine stomaching six preseason games.
09:56I can't fathom it.
09:58Yeah, so that's kind of where we are.
10:01Kind of a meaningless game.
10:03First unit got kind of shoved on there,
10:06but there really weren't that many starters.
10:08One kicker doinked one, but he made it.
10:10Mariota got hurt.
10:11Those are basically the highlights.
10:13Let's tackle Mariota, though, next.
10:14I'm going to put this up as the Junkies poll of the day.
10:16Is it a big deal that Mariota is out?
10:18And does it affect Dan Quinn's decision?
10:21We're going to talk to Dan Quinn tomorrow, 745.
10:23We'll sit down with him live from Commander's Park.
10:26We're going to be broadcasting live.
10:29We'll tackle Mariota next here on the Junkies.
10:31We'll tackle Mariota next.
