00:00We're back with the best Android apps of the month, this time for August 2026 and I've got 15 awesome
00:04apps for you to check out.
00:06Most of which aren't even on the Play Store too, and tracking these down wasn't easy.
00:09So if you end up downloading even just one of them, a quick thumbs up would be very much appreciated.
00:14First up is Droid Lab, which basically gives your phone a bunch of brand new gestures and shortcuts that Android
00:19itself just doesn't even offer.
00:21Like let's say you're watching a video on YouTube.
00:23You can just swipe along the edge of your screen to just scrub through it.
00:26That way you can fast forward or rewind super easily.
00:28Or if you're scrolling through social media or a web page, you can even have this handy scroll handle that
00:33just makes it way easier to just get through everything with one hand.
00:36It even has a touchpad mode, so you can get a virtual trackpad and cursor, which is perfect for reaching
00:41those top corners much more easily.
00:43But honestly, that's just scratching the surface.
00:45There are just so many more custom gestures that you can do inside this app, including double tapping the back
00:50of your phone, chopping your phone, twisting it, or using multi-finger swipes to just launch apps.
00:56There's a ton of them, and you can toggle a bunch of actions too, like the flashlight, take screenshots, you
01:02can lock your phone, and a whole lot more.
01:03It's super useful.
01:05From there, there's a really annoying thing on Android where when you're listening to music and then you open YouTube
01:10or Instagram, your music stops because the other app just takes over the audio.
01:15Well, with Volume Plus Plus, you'll never have that problem again because it lets you force any app to just
01:20keep playing its audio on top of others, so nothing ever gets cut off.
01:25So, for example, if you've got Spotify playing in the background and then you open TikTok, both of those apps
01:30would just blast sound at the same time.
01:32And if you really want to go wild, you can even have a floating YouTube video running at the same
01:36time too.
01:37Yes, all three will just continue to play their audio simultaneously, as chaotic as that is, without any interruptions.
01:44But here's where it gets even cooler.
01:46You can actually adjust the volume for each app individually too.
01:49So if you want your YouTube audio to be louder than your Spotify background music, you can do that right
01:54from the expanded volume panel.
01:55And to top it all off, you can even customize the look of your volume slider too.
01:59I mean, it's got a bunch of Android versions to choose from that you can go in the past.
02:02It's a surprisingly useful sound app.
02:04You know, I've been really jealous of the latest Galaxy Z Fold 8 phones because they have this really helpful
02:08feature that not many people are talking about called task automation,
02:12where you can literally just tell your phone to do something like book an Uber or plan a trip, and
02:16it'll actually take over your screen and do it for you.
02:19Like it'll open the apps, type everything in and do the research, just handle the whole process on its own
02:24and in the background as well and just let you confirm it in the end.
02:28And honestly, I wish every Android phone had something like this.
02:30Well, now you kind of can with McCannly, because just like those latest Galaxy devices, you can type in whatever
02:37task you'd like it to do, and it'll do the same thing.
02:40For example, I can tell it to order me an Uber to the airport from my address, and it'll launch
02:43it right in the app, ready to go, so I can place my order.
02:47Or I can tell it to draft up a tweet too for me, and it'll quickly open up X with
02:51my written tweet ready to be posted.
02:53Or I can also ask it to reply to the last three comments on my latest video, and it'll also
02:57do that right away.
02:58Now, to be fair, it doesn't always work super smoothly, especially for complicated tasks, but it's still really cool to
03:03watch it take control and do the task for you.
03:06And that's just three out of the 15 apps that I got for you for this month, and trust me,
03:10there's plenty more where that came from.
03:11A quick heads up though, starting with this episode, I'm going to be doing something a little bit different.
03:15Under each app that I talked about within the text, I'm going to let you know whether it was created
03:19using AI or not.
03:20And if it was, I'll actually tell you how much of the code in that app was AI-driven with
03:25a percentage next to it.
03:26Now, the reason for this is pretty simple.
03:28I mean, while AI is an awesome tool, we've been noticing that apps built almost entirely with AI can sometimes
03:33be a bit more buggy or have compatibility issues,
03:37especially if the developer doesn't have a ton of experience maintaining that kind of code.
03:41So I figured, why not give you that extra bit of info so you know what you're getting yourself into?
03:45It's just another factor to help you decide.
03:47Let me know in the comments what you think about this edition.
03:49Oh, and as usual, make sure you stick around to the end because that's where I'll be talking about the
03:52best app on this entire list.
03:54You won't want to miss it.
03:55Anyway, Beta Scout is a free and open source app that shows you all the beta programs that you can
04:00join for the apps that you already have installed on your phone.
04:02So if you're someone who likes trying out new features and designs before anyone else, this is a goldmine.
04:08It even lets you watch an app's beta status.
04:10So if a beta program is full right now, but it opens up later, you'll get notified and be able
04:15to jump right in.
04:16Now, I know a lot of you are probably thinking, why not just use Betamaniac instead?
04:20And I get it, it's been around for a while and does the same thing.
04:23But here's the thing, Betamaniac is a closed source and comes packed with a bunch of trackers that literally collect
04:28a ton of sensitive data.
04:30Beta Scout, on the other hand, is completely open source.
04:32It's much more privacy friendly since it has no trackers.
04:35And honestly, it's just the newer and better option.
04:37All right, if you got a big phone and you're tired of stretching your thumb across the screen just to
04:41read stuff, you're going to love Navage.
04:43It adds a little floating button anywhere you want on your screen, and then it opens up a radio menu
04:48with up to nine customizable shortcuts.
04:51And then from there, you can use it to navigate your phone.
04:53You can quickly launch apps.
04:55You can toggle system settings.
04:57You can take a screenshot, whatever you need.
04:59And it gets even better too, because you can swipe on the button in four different directions to unlock even
05:03more shortcuts.
05:05So you don't even need to open up the menu too.
05:07So that's a total of 13 shortcuts just from one little button.
05:10It's super useful, plus of course you can customize the look of the bubble with a bunch of different themes,
05:15so it actually looks good too.
05:17Definitely recommend this one if you've got a big phone.
05:20Next is Glyph, and it's just another clever way to just make it easier to use your phone.
05:24Like instead of hunting through your app drawer, you can just draw a custom symbol on your screen to just
05:28instantly launch whatever you want.
05:30For example, I can tap on this floating button, and then I can draw the letter I to just launch
05:34Instagram.
05:35I can also draw the letter B to just call my friend Bobby right away.
05:39Or I can draw a number nine to just launch my favorite tech news site, 9to5Google.
05:43Or if you get the pro version, you can even trigger multiple actions all at once with a single drawing.
05:48Like I made it where if I draw two circles, it'll launch music mode.
05:51So it'll launch Spotify, play the music, and set the media volume to around 65%.
05:56I mean, the possibilities are really endless, and you can create any custom drawing that you want for any custom
06:01action.
06:02It really just makes you wonder why people still own an iPhone.
06:05Next is Layered, and if you're always forgetting about what's in your schedule, this app is actually pretty genius,
06:10because it literally just puts your calendar right on your wallpaper.
06:13Now, I chose it to be on my lock screen wallpaper, but you can choose it to be on your
06:17home screen as well.
06:18And I found it really helpful because I can see everything that I've got going on for the day right
06:22when I turn on the screen.
06:23It even automatically updates throughout the day as your schedule changes.
06:27And of course, you can customize everything about it too, like the colors and the style of it.
06:31It's simple, but very clever.
06:33So here's the thing.
06:34When I'm out walking and trying to type on my phone, it used to be such a hassle.
06:38But not anymore, because I've been using Whisperflow, the sponsor of this video, to just let me talk instead of
06:43type,
06:44and it's been way faster and more accurate.
06:46I don't even have to stop walking.
06:48I just tap this little floating button that pops up above my keyboard,
06:51then I speak into my phone, and Whisperflow takes care of the rest.
06:55It just turns my long rambles into a clean, nicely written message.
06:59And yeah, it's definitely better than Android's built-in voice typing.
07:02Plus, it works in pretty much every app too.
07:04I've been using it to reply to my team on Slack, draft emails in my Gmail app,
07:08and even write out my scripts in Google Docs.
07:10It's been really handy.
07:11If you don't believe me, here's a live comparison between Whisperflow and Gboard's voice typing feature.
07:16Hey Facundo, um, can you stop by the store real quick on your way home?
07:19We need a few things.
07:21Milk, eggs, bananas.
07:22I mean, blueberries.
07:24Oh, and if they also have the Oatly Barista edition, grab that too.
07:27Thanks.
07:30See that?
07:31Whisperflow blew Android's native voice typing just out of the water,
07:34with much better formatting, punctuation, and even fixing my mistake halfway through.
07:39Plus, the best part is that it's also available on iOS and desktop.
07:42And by the way, Whisperflow is completely free to download and use on all those platforms,
07:46but there is a Pro version to get unlimited words,
07:48and if you use the code HOWTOMEN, you'll also get one month of Whisperflow Pro for free.
07:53You can download it now through the top link in the description.
07:55I definitely recommend it.
07:57Next, I don't really show off widget packs anymore in this series,
08:00especially since we have our own awesome pack over on our HowTOMEN Patreon,
08:03which we're still updating every month with new material widgets and wallpapers,
08:07but I did come across this awesome looking one called No Widgets,
08:10and I made an exception because it's really great.
08:13All of these have a beautiful material expressive design
08:15that looks like Google could have made themselves.
08:18I mean, you've got a bunch of different music player widgets,
08:21which I appreciate because Google still doesn't have a proper offline music player widget yet,
08:25besides for their own app.
08:27There's also a currency converter widget that's super handy if you're traveling,
08:30a habit tracker that lets you check things off each time you do a task,
08:34a beautiful finance tracker to stay on top of your spending, and a lot more.
08:38Plus, I love that you don't need any extra app like KWGT to get these widgets working.
08:43You just place them down on your home screen, resize them however you want,
08:46with some of them even getting new types of content as you expand them,
08:50and then they even match the colors of your wallpaper too and the dark theme too, which is perfect.
08:54If you've ever heard of Flighty on iPhone,
08:57you probably know that it's one of the best flight tracking apps out there,
09:00but it's just not available on Android.
09:02Well, I finally found a really solid alternative for Android called Aviate.
09:06The next time you're flying, just type in your airline and your flight number,
09:10and you'll be able to track just about everything,
09:12including seeing a live map of your flight and the airplane,
09:15you can see any delays, you can look at the airport maps and see if there's any gate changes,
09:20see turbulence forecasts, and even where the actual plane is before it even arrives at your gate.
09:26Plus, it also lets you save your boarding pass right inside the app,
09:29so it's available even without an internet connection,
09:32and you can create a travel checklist to make sure you don't forget anything before your trip.
09:36Plus, my favorite part is that it just keeps track of all your travel stats,
09:39like how many countries you visited, how many hours you spent flying, and a bunch of other fun stats.
09:44So if you even travel a few times a year, this is definitely worth downloading.
09:48Next is Done-A-Go, and if you've got a bunch of reoccurring chores or tasks to keep track of,
09:54this app is perfect.
09:56Instead of creating one giant generic task, you can break it down into smaller subtasks.
10:01So like, let's say you're cleaning the house, you can set that as the main task,
10:05and underneath it, you can add vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom, dusting, mopping, and whatever else you need.
10:11Or if you're heading to the gym, you can make a checklist of all the exercises that you want to
10:15finish before you leave.
10:17And then you can mark them off as you finish each task.
10:20The really nice part, too, is that when you check one of them,
10:22it just remembers the last time that you completed it,
10:25so you always know what's overdue without you even having to keep track of it yourself.
10:29You can even place these cards on the home screen as widgets,
10:32so you can check things off without even opening the app.
10:35It's a really great way to just stay on top of everything.
10:37This next one is for all of you rocking a flip phone.
10:40With Cover Screen OS, you can basically turn your cover screen into a full, secondary OS,
10:45kind of like what Samsung recently did with the new Galaxy Z Flip 8.
10:48I mean, currently on my Z Flip 7, I can only see Samsung widgets and load them up, too.
10:53But now I have basically a whole home screen experience, and I can run almost any app.
10:58I can reply to notifications.
11:00I can bring up a full keyboard.
11:01I can use widgets, control my music, and even access quick settings all without ever opening my phone.
11:08I mean, some of the apps you open won't be optimized well, but it's still really great to see.
11:13And if you've got a Galaxy Z Flip 5, 6, or 7, it gets even better because you can turn
11:17the cover display
11:18into a fully customizable home screen where you can place apps and resize widgets however you want.
11:24It also works on a bunch of Motorola Razer phones, plus a few Oppo and Vivo Flip phones, too.
11:29So if you've got a foldable, this will make it even more useful.
11:32Next is NetLens.
11:34And I actually featured this app in last month's episode of the Best Entered Apps,
11:38but I had to bring it back because the latest update made it even better.
11:42Basically, you walk around your house with your camera,
11:44and it creates a live AR heat map of your Wi-Fi signal right on the floor,
11:48so you can instantly spot dead zones and figure out the best place to just move your router or place
11:53your mesh node.
11:54And in its newest update, it even adds even more really cool visuals
11:57to just make it easier to spot dead zones.
11:59Like you get a full lava map on the ground,
12:02you can change it to pinpoints, or even a bunch of floating balls lying around.
12:06Plus, you can import your home's floor plan, too,
12:09so you can build a full room Wi-Fi coverage map
12:11and pinpoint exactly where your speeds are the worst in each room.
12:15So if you ever struggled with bad Wi-Fi in certain parts of your house,
12:18this is easily one of the coolest networking apps that you can use to fix that.
12:22Screen Recorder is up next,
12:24and this has to be my absolute favorite new screen recording app.
12:27First off, it's got that Samsung design language, which I kind of dig.
12:30Plus, it's super straightforward to use.
12:32It lets you record at your phone's highest resolution.
12:35It can capture internal audio instead of just using the microphone.
12:38It does a three-second countdown before the recording starts,
12:41and it even has a floating recording pill,
12:43so you can pause or stop your recording super easily and quickly.
12:47Sure, it's not the most feature-packed screen recorder out there,
12:49but it works pretty well.
12:51And while we're also on the topic of videos,
12:53MPV Rex is also my favorite new Android Video Player app.
12:56It's absolutely packed with features.
12:58I mean, for starters, it has a dedicated shorts tab
13:00where you can scroll through all your vertical videos, just like TikTok.
13:04It makes it really easy to look back on memories
13:06and delete the videos that are useless.
13:08It also has excellent playback controls,
13:10like you can swipe to fast-forward and rewind.
13:13You can pinch to zoom into videos and a lot more.
13:16Plus, it supports HDR video playback, network streaming,
13:20and just about every video format out there.
13:22And the cherry on top is that it's got a material-expressive design,
13:24so it feels modern and nice to use.
13:27Now, if you're tired of using Google Chrome,
13:29you've got to check out this brand-new browser on the block called Omni Browser.
13:32It's one of the newest browsers on Android,
13:34and it's packed with a ton of features.
13:36You get full Firefox extension support,
13:38so you can install things like Ublock Origin.
13:41Plus, it even includes a built-in media sniffer
13:43that lets you grab videos from supported websites.
13:45On top of that, it's got a bunch of built-in tools,
13:48like an offline translator, a document scanner,
13:50QR scanner and generator, PDF creator,
13:53and even a secure vault where you can lock files behind your fingerprint.
13:57It's still actively being developed,
13:58but if you're tired of your current browser
14:00and you just want to try something fresh,
14:02this is definitely one to keep an eye out on.
14:04Anyway, tap this card right here to watch a playlist
14:06of the previous Best Apps episode of the month.
14:08I've been doing this for years,
14:09so there's a ton of apps for you to check out.
14:11And hey, just drop a quick thumbs up
14:13if I helped you find at least one app worth downloading
14:15in this month's episode of the Best Indered Apps.
14:17I appreciate you all for sticking around till the end,
14:19and thank you so much.
14:21Kapow!
