00:00Coach, I want to get into the quarterback play.
00:02I had Bernie Kosar on with me a couple months ago,
00:05and he said something that was really interesting.
00:07He said the technology of today's game,
00:10with everybody in the quarterback's ears and all,
00:12really doesn't help when it comes to developing of quarterbacks,
00:16seeing the game, or seeing and being able to dissect.
00:19Do you agree with that, Coach, that today the NFL quarterbacks
00:22coming out of college aren't ready to know how to play the game
00:25and how ready to dissect some of these defenses?
00:28Or do you think, again, these guys are just some of the most talented players
00:31that we've ever seen play the position?
00:33Where are you with this?
00:35I 100% agree with him.
00:37Obviously, the more you throw the football, the better off you're going to be,
00:41hopefully.
00:42And I think college has done that for them,
00:44but they learned so many bad habits,
00:45and the speed of the game is just so different.
00:47You don't really see whether a young man can process quickly enough
00:51to be in the league, and I think that's the biggest downfall
00:53of so many talented kids.
00:55You know, when the game speeds up
00:56and everything is a little bit more technical,
00:58they just can't stay up and process as quickly as they need to.
01:02And this is one of the things that Kirk could do just instantly.
01:05God gave him that, and for whatever reason,
01:08he could draw on that constantly and get better at it.
01:11And, you know, there's so many really talented throwers out there
01:14and have great legs and all that that just can't process as well.
01:18Coach, who do you like in today's game that you see right now
01:22that you think has all the intangibles that you would like to coach?
01:26Which one of these guys do you see in today's game?
01:29I've always been a big fan of Justin Herbert.
01:32I think a couple of things have happened to him there.
01:34They've been bad on defense for so many years.
01:37They've gotten better.
01:38But their offensive line problems have,
01:40to survive behind that offensive line like he's been able to do
01:44and have the success he's had without much of a running game
01:48is pretty remarkable.
01:49It looks like they may be the surprise team of the league this year.
01:53I think what they've done with the new coordinator
01:55and defensively they've shared things up in the run of the ball.
01:58It's a perfect storm for them.
02:00I really have been a big fan of his since he came out of college.
02:03I think he's the whole package.
02:06What do you make of Josh Allen in looking at Josh Allen's game?
02:10I think Josh Allen would be my second pick.
02:13You know, he's just a freak of nature.
02:15You know, he's so big and fast, and he can run over two different linebackers
02:20in the same play and yet throw these incredibly accurate balls
02:24with great force down the field, long-range balls, and then touch it off.
02:32And I think that his decision-making has improved.
02:36He takes less chances.
02:37That puts the team in jeopardy.
02:39I think defensively they failed a little bit at inopportune times.
02:43The thing that frustrates me is when you have a quarterback like that,
02:46the first thing you've got to do is surround him with some playmakers,
02:49give him an opportunity to, you know, make plays with these guys.
02:52And if you don't have a real stable wide receiver,
02:55which I don't think they have or haven't had anyway,
02:58it's really you've done an injustice to that team.
03:02You know, the potential just won't be realized.
03:05Coach, I want you to help me on one quarterback, Jalen Hurts.
03:09Tell me what you make of him.
03:11I look at his technique.
03:13I look at his fundamentals.
03:15I don't see the greatest footwork.
03:17I don't see the most accurate guy.
03:19He doesn't throw at times on time.
03:22But yet, Coach, over the last four years, he's 15-18.
03:25He wins.
03:26I mean, explain to me what you see when you see Jalen Hurts.
03:31Well, he's a great competitor.
03:33And here's a great example of a guy surrounded by talent as well.
03:36You know, the offensive line, the running game for many years carried that team.
03:39The defensively, they were so strong.
03:41So, he's had a cast around him that's really helped him.
03:45You put him in the Chargers situation, flop quarterbacks, you know,
03:49in the last few years, who knows what would happen.
03:51But I don't, I'm not taking a knock on him.
03:54I see all the things that you see.
03:56The thing that I don't like about him is he just has a tendency to hold the ball too much.
04:00He can do that because he can move around a little bit.
04:02But he's indecisive at times.
04:05If you play tight man against him, he's going to struggle
04:07because he's not inherently real accurate.
04:10But they just win, you know, and that's the job of a quarterback is just win.
04:14So, it's hard to knock him because he's done such a great job with that team in terms of winning.
