00:01:05THE END
00:01:06There was a time when Oklahoma territory had its great free ranges.
00:01:10The cowboy went about his daily work, contentment in his heart.
00:01:14His only boundary, the limitless horizon.
00:01:17These were peaceful days.
00:01:20Then the cattle herds disappeared.
00:01:22Oklahoma was open to the settler.
00:01:24The government cut the ranches into sections and they became farms.
00:01:28Ringed by barbed strands, the free range was no more.
00:01:32The cowboy who could not be fenced in stared in anger at the intruder,
00:01:37blaming him for their loss of livelihood.
00:01:41Instead of turning their hand to a plow, their hand went to a six-gun.
00:01:45To take what they reasoned was rightfully theirs.
00:01:48Then to be joined by others.
00:01:50So the outlaw gangs came.
00:01:53The James brothers.
00:01:55The younger brothers.
00:01:57Then behind them, the United States marshals.
00:02:00pushing on relentlessly.
00:02:02It was our sworn duty to hunt down, to destroy this lawless element.
00:02:08And then finally, bolder than their forerunners, the Dalton.
00:02:18Coffeyville, Kansas, October 5th, 1892.
00:02:21The Dalton gang becoming so daring as to strike in broad daylight.
00:02:25The Dalton brothers.
00:02:27With Sam Powers, Bill Broadwell, and Wichita Smith.
00:02:58Well, small world, cousin.
00:03:00Sure is.
00:03:01Never thought I'd see you walking around so freely as you like.
00:03:03What brings you to town?
00:03:04I had to come in and get a little spending money for over Sunday.
00:03:07Doing the same thing myself.
00:03:40I had to come in and get a little bit of money for you.
00:03:57Oh, my God.
00:04:06Hello, Marshal.
00:04:07Sorry you missed all the excitement.
00:04:09So am I.
00:04:09Congratulations, Sheriff.
00:04:10The Dalton's won't rob anymore.
00:04:13We was waiting for him.
00:04:15Blew the daylights out of him.
00:04:18We didn't give a chance.
00:04:20Shot him down like dogs, did we?
00:04:23Yeah, in the back.
00:04:28What's the matter with it, mister?
00:04:30Never saw a man so bad he had to be shot in the back.
00:04:35That's strange, coming from a marshal.
00:04:38You sound like you knew the Daughtons.
00:04:40Sure did. Friends of mine.
00:04:41Punched cattle with them.
00:04:43You make a habit of being friends of outlaws?
00:04:46They weren't when I met them.
00:04:49Fact is, both Grant and Bob once wore a marshal's badge, just like that.
00:04:53That's right.
00:04:54You live around here?
00:04:55Just passing through.
00:04:57I didn't get your name.
00:04:59Didn't give it.
00:05:01I'd like to have a talk with you sometime.
00:05:03Sure.
00:05:05Sometime.
00:05:14Sheriff, I got to talk to you.
00:05:15Yeah, I'm busy with you, though.
00:05:17But, Sheriff, it's a poor...
00:05:17You've been paid your reward money.
00:05:19Well, it ain't the reward.
00:05:20There's flowers on them Dalton graves.
00:05:22Well, what of it?
00:05:23Well, only two men could put flowers in them graves, Bill Dalton and Bill Doolin.
00:05:26How come they went along in the bank robbery?
00:05:29Dalton crippled his arm a couple of days ago.
00:05:32Doolin's horse pulled up lame on the way in this morning.
00:05:34Doolin?
00:05:35I never heard of him.
00:05:37Oh, he's new.
00:05:37He just joined up.
00:05:39They're in town someplace.
00:05:40Get a posse and bring them in.
00:05:41Yeah, none of that Dalton bunch is going to be poking his nose at a coffee bill after today.
00:05:45All right, but they might get me.
00:05:46That's right.
00:05:47Then you wouldn't be able to spend that reward money.
00:05:51Well, I'm riding out of here tonight.
00:05:53If I were you, I'd ride far out.
00:06:02Doolin.
00:06:04Come here.
00:06:09Bill Dalton, you out of your mind, this town's full of marshals.
00:06:12Don't you know what happened?
00:06:13I don't know all of it.
00:06:14Seven men rode into town.
00:06:16I only found five graves.
00:06:18How come you're alive?
00:06:20Only because I wasn't with the others.
00:06:21My horse pulled up lame.
00:06:23The horse over there didn't pull up lame.
00:06:25Wichita was a squealer.
00:06:28When he comes to get it, I'm going to kill him.
00:06:29You'll never get by with that.
00:06:31I don't care.
00:06:41I don't care.
00:07:01Bill, you've got to listen to reason.
00:07:03There's nothing you can do that'll bring those boys back.
00:07:06It's easy talk for you.
00:07:07They weren't your brothers.
00:07:09They might as well have been.
00:07:11They were my best friends.
00:07:28Don't shoot, Dolan.
00:07:29Climb down, Wichita.
00:07:31Climb down.
00:07:47Dalton, Dalton, Bill, do it.
00:07:51It's a Dalton.
00:07:53No good.
00:07:55You better ride for it.
00:07:58You finally killed your first man.
00:08:00Self-defense.
00:08:02Make them believe that.
00:08:04It's a Dalton.
00:08:05Another Dalton.
00:08:06Go on, Doolan.
00:08:08From now on, it's going to be one big chase.
00:08:13It's a Dalton.
00:08:15There's a Dalton.
00:08:17Get him.
00:08:44Wanted for murder.
00:08:45Bill Doolan.
00:08:47A new name to be entered in the files of the United States Marshal's Office.
00:09:04Bill Doolan.
00:09:06Fugitive.
00:09:06A man against the world, with no thought now but of escape.
00:09:17Alone.
00:09:18Forced to keep moving.
00:09:20Forced to travel alone.
00:09:21To live alone.
00:09:22With the doors of free men closed forever against him.
00:09:25But though survival is the first instinct.
00:09:29Man is not meant to survive in solitude.
00:09:32He must have companionship.
00:09:34But there are left only those like himself.
00:09:38Outcasts.
00:09:45Some day somebody's going to shoot you for a deer, Arkansas.
00:09:48Doolan.
00:09:49I knowed you'd show up sooner or later.
00:09:51Can't keep running forever, can you?
00:09:55Company?
00:09:56Business associates.
00:09:58See, you still have the habit of sleeping outside.
00:10:01Yeah, you live longer that way.
00:10:03See, when the shooting starts, I don't have to stop to open no door.
00:10:09Boys, I want you to meet an old pal of mine.
00:10:12We polished a lot of saddle leather together when we worked at the old Barzee Ranch in the old days.
00:10:17Bitter Creek, Red Buck, Big Bill Doolan.
00:10:19Howdy.
00:10:21Three jacks.
00:10:22Aces.
00:10:22Three of them.
00:10:24Who dealt?
00:10:24What do you suppose?
00:10:26Glad to know you, Mr. Doolan.
00:10:27Howdy.
00:10:27Me and the boys here are sort of in the investment business ourselves.
00:10:31In a small way, of course.
00:10:32How are you doing?
00:10:33Well, we opened a bank or two.
00:10:36We could use a man like you.
00:10:37I'm against it.
00:10:39I don't blame you.
00:10:41Is that any way to talk to a guest?
00:10:43We've got enough peace officers chasing us now.
00:10:45Once he joins up, he'll have an army on our trail.
00:10:48Doolan hasn't done anything except kill a man.
00:10:50That's not it.
00:10:51He's the last member of the Dalton gang.
00:10:52That makes him important.
00:10:53We need someone important around here.
00:10:55Help keep the boys in line.
00:10:56I said no.
00:10:58Cut.
00:11:00Go on, cut.
00:11:08That settles at Doolan stays.
00:11:10Someday you're going to run out of aces.
00:11:12Uh-uh, not me.
00:11:16Forced to seek friends outside the law, then chosen as their leader, he looks for more recruits.
00:11:22It was soon to ride as the Doolan gang of Oklahoma.
00:11:29If we're going to get Tulsa Jack out of there, what are we sitting here for?
00:11:32He likes to look.
00:11:33At what?
00:11:34He's got guns.
00:11:34Why don't we use them?
00:11:35Yeah, we need a fellow like Tulsa.
00:11:37You know, he can blow a safe with less noise than anyone I ever knew.
00:11:40Bill, that jail ain't big, but it looks harder to get into than most jails is to get out of.
00:11:45That's rather an ambiguous statement.
00:11:48Why don't you keep your conversation to yourself?
00:11:50Oh, I'm sorry.
00:11:51I thought you were talking to me.
00:11:53My name is Bill, too.
00:11:54Maybe you'd better change it.
00:11:55I have.
00:11:56Several times.
00:11:57Once even to a number.
00:12:00Some places they seem to regard it as unlawful, even when you beat a man to the draw.
00:12:06Little Bill, they call me.
00:12:08Mr. Doolan?
00:12:09Why do you think my name's Doolan?
00:12:11Well, you left Coffeyville so hurriedly you forgot to settle your stable bill.
00:12:14I paid it for you.
00:12:16Thanks.
00:12:16How much to owe you?
00:12:17Oh, nothing.
00:12:17It was a privilege.
00:12:20If I was you, Mr. Doolan, I'd get on over to that jail right now.
00:12:25See that gentleman just shutting the door?
00:12:28He's the jailer.
00:12:29He's on his way to visit his lady friend.
00:12:32They play cribbage for about an hour every afternoon.
00:12:42Pardon me, Mr. Doolan.
00:12:44I'll have to go.
00:12:45All right.
00:12:48Maybe this will help.
00:12:51Thanks.
00:12:52It's a pleasure.
00:13:02I'm here.
00:13:02Are you in charge here?
00:13:03Yeah.
00:13:04I'm the new U.S. Marshal for this area.
00:13:06Yes, sir.
00:13:07Official business, uh, private.
00:13:09All right, boys, clear out. Come on, hurry up.
00:13:12If you have a prisoner here by the name of Tulsa Jack,
00:13:14I've come to take him back to Guthrie.
00:13:16Oh, that one. Glad to get rid of him. He's a bad one.
00:13:19This way, gentlemen.
00:13:21Tulsa. Tulsa Jack.
00:13:27Oh, I forgot.
00:13:28I can't turn the prisoner over till I see the extradition paper.
00:13:32Let's do. Open your cell.
00:13:34I'll lose my job for this.
00:13:36You'll be lucky if you don't lose your life. Open the cell.
00:13:38Get moving.
00:13:43Thanks. There's much for you sometime.
00:13:45Hope you don't have to.
00:13:51And so the Doolin gang was formed.
00:13:54Red Buck, born George Wakeman, notorious horse thief.
00:13:58Arkansas Tom Jones, whose fingers were nimble with a card or a six gun.
00:14:02Tulsa Jack Blake and Wild Wrangler.
00:14:05Bitter Creek, spawn of the Cherokee Strip.
00:14:08Bill Doolin, Oklahoma Rage Rider.
00:14:10Little Bill, the Pennsylvanians. The Doolins rise.
00:14:18Bill Doolin, Oklahoma Rage Rider.
00:14:27There's a deal going on for three months of the
00:14:28Two months of the first
00:14:29Hey, Stelle!
00:14:30We take lessons.
00:14:31We're checking in with our friends.
00:14:31You got away!
00:14:34You got away!
00:14:39You got away.
00:14:40You got away.
00:15:01Can't do no business tonight. It's after hours.
00:15:03Besides, I'm having my supper.
00:15:05You've finished your supper. Wipe your chin.
00:15:08Open that safe.
00:15:09What?
00:15:09You see, sir, we have to eat, too.
00:15:11That Flying A Ranch payroll you received today sort of wets our appetite.
00:15:16Sorry to interrupt your supper.
00:15:17Oh, he's lost his appetite, Bill, haven't you?
00:15:22Yeah.
00:16:02What's next on the agenda, Big Bill?
00:16:04How's that?
00:16:05I mean, what safe are we going to blow up next?
00:16:07Here's your share, little Bill.
00:16:09I'm going to hold up here and take it easy.
00:16:11Here?
00:16:11Sure. Nobody comes here.
00:16:13The road doesn't even pass by anymore.
00:16:14What about the rest of us?
00:16:16You're taking a fishing trip up north by yourself.
00:16:20And you better creak.
00:16:21You've been going around with a long face recently.
00:16:23I think it'd do you good if you paid a little visit with that girl of yours in Angel's.
00:16:27Wouldn't do me any harm.
00:16:28What's up your sleeve, Big Bill?
00:16:30Nothing except for our own protection.
00:16:32We've stirred things up enough throughout the territory and all around.
00:16:36We're going to split up and disappear for a while.
00:16:39Tulsa, it might be a good idea for you to take in the World's Fair to Chicago.
00:16:43You've never been the east of Leavenworth.
00:16:45Nobody was there for five years.
00:16:48Everybody have a good time, and in three months you can call on Biller Creek's girl, Rosa Cimarron.
00:16:53She'll tell you where we get together again.
00:16:54I don't like the idea of busting up just when we're riding high.
00:16:57You know what I said about getting overambitious, Red Buck.
00:17:26Hey!
00:17:27Hey, where is everybody?
00:17:29Well, there you are.
00:17:30Come on, come on, let's go.
00:17:31What's the hurry?
00:17:31We're taking a rush, remember?
00:17:33I'm telling you, we've got to get out of here.
00:17:34What's all the rush?
00:17:35I just robbed a bank.
00:17:36Alone?
00:17:37Well, there was only one bank.
00:17:40They're after me, I think.
00:17:48You think.
00:17:49Go on, get going.
00:17:50Head for the rocks, then we'll scallop.
00:17:56Listen, pay for things.
00:17:57Thanks.
00:18:23Go on.
00:18:23Where is the
00:18:23one?

00:41:22attractive isn't it yes indeed he is anyone else turn out
00:41:31well there's one thing to doolan's credit he's a smart general
00:41:35lays low for a long time after each robbery and then
00:41:38bobs up in a new place on the other side of the map where we least expect him might just
00:41:42as
00:41:42well be swallowed up by the earth for all the trail they leave
00:41:46the past year we've been looking for a pattern the doolan gang works by
00:41:51if anybody has one i wish they'd show it to me maybe i can right here in this map
00:41:57it isn't the nature of men like that to hole up in a cave or ranch house for weeks at
00:42:02a time
00:42:03once in a while they've got to let off steam now if you draw a circle around these towns
00:42:09where do you find the center carson cane city and ingles we'll split and hit them all ingles
00:42:18that's a town worth hitting you figure they'll strike there next i don't think they ever will
00:42:24it's the middle of their operations my hunch is that that's where the gang goes to spend their money
00:42:37drink up there joe you don't have to pay for it tonight
00:42:41raise a smile on your hand there tilly our gentleman hosts like it gay and cheerful

00:44:14Now sit down.
00:44:15Oh, sure.
00:44:17Oh, hey, lady. Bring us another bottle of bubbles.
00:44:21Aren't you a little young to be going to a party?
00:44:23Old Pa will be mad at old Nick when I get home.
00:44:25But I'm growed.
00:44:27I stole his best saddle horse to get here, too.
00:44:30I reckon I'm old enough to learn a couple of things.
00:44:38Honey, maybe you've learned a couple too many.
00:44:41Hey, mister, what...
00:44:50Doesn't he ever have any fun anymore?
00:44:52No, not much. Anymore.
00:44:57I'll be right back.
00:44:59Sure, of course, I knew what kind of cattle you gentlemen trade in
00:45:02that makes so much money.
00:45:03I'd kind of like to get in on it.
00:45:05I ain't called cattle any for nothing. I know all about cows.
00:45:08Especially them kind that shoots back.
00:45:26Well, they say a man's in the best company when he's alone.
00:45:30Only this isn't like you, Bill.
00:45:32I like it.
00:45:33But you're paying for this party.
00:45:34You ought to be in there getting your money's worth.
00:45:36A little too noisy.
00:45:38You've changed.
00:45:39You used to be the one who made all the noise.
00:45:41Yeah.
00:45:44Bill.
00:45:46Bill, what I really came out here for was to talk about Bitter Creek.
00:45:49What about it?
00:45:50We want to get married.
00:45:52Only I won't do it and be left behind.
00:45:54You mean you'd go on the rides?
00:45:56I'd go anywhere with Bitter Creek.
00:45:58You're a woman.
00:45:59Well, other women have ridden with their men.
00:46:01Well, Belle Starr did.
00:46:03And the wives of Murrieta's men rode too.
00:46:05Sorry, Rose.
00:46:05You know the rule.
00:46:09The rule.
00:46:10Is that rule because you didn't find a girl who would take you for what you are?
00:46:14Who'd stand by you when you...
00:46:15Rose, I think you'd better go back to your friends.
00:46:17Rose.
00:46:20I'm sorry, Dad.
00:46:21I spoke out of turn.
00:46:23That's all right.
00:46:38And go.
00:46:40And go.
00:46:42And go.
00:46:42And go.
00:46:43And go.
00:47:07All yours if you play the Arkansas Traveler.
00:47:11Get her up, boys.
00:47:24Get those cattle.
00:47:26We've got to get going.
00:47:27Yep.
00:47:27See you when we come through next time, Annie.
00:47:29Must be awful scary cows if you've got to sneak up on them in the dark.
00:47:33Goodbye, baby.
00:47:39Bitter Creek.
00:47:43Forgetting something?
00:47:46Thanks.
00:47:48If I lose these, I lose my luck.
00:47:50Wouldn't like that.
00:47:54Wish I could ride with them.
00:47:56Keep out the drabs, honey.
00:47:57I'll do the best I can.
00:48:00Thanks for everything.
00:48:11Register, gentlemen.
00:48:12All later.
00:48:14We understand you have some visitors here.
00:48:16The same crowd, day by day, night by night, except for an occasional drummer,
00:48:20with a city line of chatter and a sample case of bum jokes.
00:48:44Sure wish I was one of them.
00:48:46But you can't be.
00:48:48All you can do is sit here and hear that tune played and watch them leave and wonder if they're
00:48:55going to come back.
00:48:56You're talking about love.
00:48:57I'm talking about cows.
00:49:03I suppose if I asked if any of you had ever heard of the Doolin gang, the answer would be
00:49:09no.
00:49:10But if you people think you're doing something noble by shielding the most desperate gang of outlaws that ever hit
00:49:17Oklahoma, you're absolutely wrong.
00:49:20I know they seem exciting to you because of the daring things they've done, their generosity while here.
00:49:27But that doesn't make them worth defending.
00:49:30They'll bring on you the same kind of trouble they brought on other people and the same kind they'll bring
00:49:35on themselves.
00:49:38Remember, we of the law will beat them because the right is on our side.
00:49:43And that makes a big difference.
00:49:52Let's go.
00:49:54Come on, everybody.
00:49:56Drinks on the house.
00:50:04We'll get some horses and try to pick up that trail.
00:50:06They can't be too far ahead of us.
00:50:08You stay here at the hotel and pretend to be a land buyer.
00:50:11Live with the Golden Eagle and see what you can find out.
00:50:13Good luck.
00:50:47Hold up! Hold up!
00:51:07Time-to-use.
00:51:08Now, Sarge will shut up practically killed for what?
00:51:11The pennies.
00:51:12Maybe this will be enough for you.
00:51:14Take it all.
00:51:21This fellow's not to crawl in a hole in the ground
00:51:23and pull the hole in after him.
00:51:24Someone should have seen him.
00:51:26The trouble is the farmers and ranchers
00:51:28are either friends of Doolin's or too scared to talk.
00:51:30Hope that Doolin crowd's as tired as I am.
00:51:32But we still have a few hours before dark.
00:51:34We'd better split up here.
00:51:36Masterson, you and Leif take the trail to the right.
00:51:39The rest of you head east.
00:51:40Stop at every house you come to and see what you can find out.
00:51:43We'll all meet a party tomorrow.
00:51:44Good.
00:52:02He calls that stuff coffee.
00:52:04It ain't coffee.
00:52:05That's just thin tar.
00:52:06Pass the bean.
00:52:08Jim?
00:52:09Yes, again.
00:52:13Tell us to give me some of them taters.
00:52:41Evening.
00:52:42They got no rooms left.
00:52:43We're all filled up.
00:52:45I'm an after room.
00:52:46You're too late for supper, too.
00:52:48I've eaten.
00:52:50I'm on my way to Pawnee.
00:52:52I guess I took the wrong road.
00:52:54I guess you did.
00:52:56Which way do I go?
00:52:57Go back to the forks.
00:52:59Turn right.
00:52:59It's the quickest way.
00:53:01Much obliged.
00:53:03Good night.
00:53:15I remember this, Doolin.

00:53:28I'm going to get him.

01:02:48I gave you my room, the best room this side of Kansas City.
01:02:53It was the best.
01:03:00Saddle the horses.
01:03:19You ain't mad.
01:03:20Just nicked in the shoulder.
01:03:23We haven't got a chance.
01:03:25I'm getting out.
01:03:25Don't be a fool.
01:04:05Keep them busy so they can't rush us.
01:04:13I'm afraid about them boys over in the stable.
01:04:15Well, if we'd just get some of these guns and ammunition over to them.
01:04:19A man wouldn't last two seconds crossing that street.
01:04:23Maybe not a man.
01:04:25Rose.
01:04:25I'm afraid of them.
01:04:47That fool woman.
01:04:56Big Bill!
01:04:58Look!
01:05:08Here.
01:05:10Oh, let him come now.
01:05:13You better creep.
01:05:19Little Bill, you and Red Buck are out of here with Rose and Bitter Creek.
01:05:24You can make it. You've got to.
01:05:31What about Arkansas?
01:05:34Get going.
01:05:58We're making a break through the back of the barn.
01:06:01Stop us.
01:06:02Port in that hotel. Get that man out of there.
01:06:03Wait, wait. Jeff, come on.
01:06:18Enough is enough.
01:06:51Come on.
01:06:52Come on.
01:06:53Come on.
01:06:54Come on.
01:06:55Come on.
01:06:58Give him a gun, I'll show you what kind of...
01:06:59Let me go, you big beef head.
01:07:01Don't you touch me.
01:07:02Get your...
01:07:03Get your hands off of me.
01:07:04Don't you put your...
01:07:05And why don't you fight like a man legged on me?
01:07:09Well, go ahead. Grab him.
01:07:12You're a smart woman, Mrs. Price.
01:07:14If you hadn't tricked him into surrendering,
01:07:16we most certainly would have blown your hotel clean out of the territory.
01:07:20But, Melissa, I thought it was because of love.
01:07:22Yeah, love of her hotel.
01:07:39Why don't we keep this up?
01:07:40I'll be honest, every time we stop.
01:07:43Bill, Bittercreek's got to have some rest.
01:07:45Isn't there someplace we can take him?
01:07:46Can he ride? He's got to.
01:07:48Yes, he can ride.
01:07:50We'll head to the Indian John's cabin on the reservation.
01:08:05This ain't no safe place to stop, Doolin.
01:08:08Maybe we'll get some warning if they come on the reservation.
01:08:10I tell you, we gotta keep going.
01:08:12He can't be moved right now.
01:08:14Well, we can travel. You and me and little Bill.
01:08:19And leave them?
01:08:20Sure, why not? We gotta move fast.
01:08:22A woman and a sick man will slow us up.
01:08:24So what?
01:08:25We got our own necks to look after.
01:08:27Then you'd better look after yours.
01:08:29What do you mean?
01:08:30You can go.
01:08:32Alone?
01:08:33Alone.
01:08:33Alone.
01:08:34Oh, now look here, Doolin.
01:08:35Ten seconds.
01:08:37Well, we gotta go together.
01:08:38Supposing I run into those marshals.
01:08:40Three of us could stand them all, but one man ain't got a chance.
01:08:42They'll get me.
01:08:43Sure they'll get you. You should have thought of that before.
01:08:45Oh, now move out.
01:08:47Now listen, Doolin.
01:09:15Let's go.
01:09:17Yes?
01:09:18You know you can never go back to Ingalls again.
01:09:20And you can't stay with us either.
01:09:22Why not, Bill?
01:09:24I've come this far.
01:09:26It'll be safer for you and for him too.
01:09:33Tomorrow, take Lady to the railroad.
01:09:35Yes.
01:09:41Go to Dodge City.
01:09:43As soon as he can travel, Biddle Creek will meet you there.
01:09:46It's the best way.
01:09:58Posse is moving away from us.
01:10:00Yes.
01:10:01Thanks to Red Buck.
01:10:08Red Buck was right.
01:10:10This place ain't safe.
01:10:12Let's go.
01:10:13You can't ride.
01:10:16Can't ride.
01:10:17Why, I can ride better than anyone.
01:10:18Biddle Creek.
01:10:21I'll meet you in Dodge City, honey.
01:10:22Keep some champagne on ice.
01:10:24We'll be there to celebrate.
01:10:27Come on, you slowpokes.
01:10:33Can I ride?
01:10:36No.
01:10:40No.
01:10:50Iaring it, but...
01:10:50Oh, no.
01:10:53Yeah, I like to ride.
01:10:54Come on.
01:10:55That's okay.
01:10:56I don't want to ride.
01:10:57No.
01:10:57No.
01:11:29You knew this was going to happen when you sent Rose up to Dodge City.
01:11:35I'll write a letter.
01:11:38What now, Big Bill?
01:11:41Thinking of a place a long way from here.
01:11:43A farm I used to own.
01:11:46Good house, fine soil.
01:11:48I guess the weeds and the pack rats have taken over by now, but...
01:11:53it'll be safe for a little while.
01:12:23It'll be safe for you.
01:12:35Look at them.
01:12:37There must be hundreds of them.
01:12:44Yeah, take a good look.
01:12:46It's the last big horse roundup you'll see in these parts.
01:12:56It's probably running them up north to that new homestead territory of the opening.
01:13:00Farmers will bomb up fast.
01:13:02Can't farm without good animals.
01:13:05You know, bombing into bad life once you get the hang of it.
01:13:10Oh, no, I must have had too much education.
01:13:14Got too much imagination.
01:13:16I like the excitement of the wilderness.
01:13:19I think I'll be heading for the high border country in Montana.
01:13:23Getting too civilized yet for you, huh?
01:13:26Civilized?
01:13:27Do you realize, Big Bill, that men like you and I are becoming obsolete?
01:13:32Out of date?
01:13:34Why, Oklahoma's getting so civilized.
01:13:36Before you know it, it'll be against the law to carry a gun.
01:13:40Hmm.
01:13:41Do you reckon we ought to be moseying long before we run into one of those wranglers?
01:13:45Maybe so.
01:13:46Uh-huh.
01:13:47I'm getting sorry to see a badge on every man I meet.
01:14:00You sure this is your place?
01:14:02Yeah.
01:14:17Well, this is it.
01:14:20Those rats you said took over your place sure know how to keep it nice and clean.
01:14:29Oh, man, am I tired.
01:14:32Well, whoever took it over is going to put us up for the night.
01:14:39Doesn't look like anybody's at home.
01:14:42It's all right with me.
01:14:46Bill, let's lock that front door and go to sleep.
01:14:49If anyone comes back, they can wake us up.
01:15:02Sure gonna feel good to sleep in a real bed for a change.
01:15:05Come on, we're going.
01:15:06Go on, we just got here.
01:15:07We're hitting the trail.
01:15:08Oh, Bill, you're loco.
01:15:10I'm so tired I couldn't even climb aboard my horse.
01:15:12My wife's still living here.
01:15:13Your wife?
01:15:14Well, that's all the better.
01:15:15She wouldn't call the law.
01:15:17Come on, we're getting out of here.
01:15:19Bill.
01:15:20Bill.
01:15:21Bill.
01:15:27How do you do, Mrs. Daly?
01:15:30Have we met before?
01:15:32Oh, yes, I remember.
01:15:34I have a room for you if you'd like to wash up.
01:15:36Well, thank you, ma'am.
01:15:39And you can use that room.
01:15:41You'll find fresh clothes the way you left it.
01:15:46And if you're hungry, I'll fix you something.
01:15:50I'll take care of the horses.
01:15:51Yeah.
01:16:06It's been so lonely, Bill.
01:16:09But I knew you'd come back.
01:16:10I didn't know anyone would be here.
01:16:13I never left.
01:16:14My family tried to take me with them when they left Clayville, but...
01:16:19But I couldn't go.
01:16:23Oh, Bill.
01:16:25Oh, Bill.
01:16:29Oh, Bill.
01:16:36Quite a lot of writing, Elaine.
01:16:39Every week I wrote to you.
01:16:41But, of course, I couldn't mail them.
01:16:45Bill, when you leave this time, I'll be going with you.
01:16:48That's crazy talk.
01:16:49I'm a hunted man with a price on my head.
01:16:51Doesn't that mean anything to you?
01:16:53I'm your wife, and wherever you go, I'll go.
01:16:57If there were only some place,
01:17:00somewhere where they'd never find you,
01:17:01where you could start again.
01:17:05There is a place, a strip of land between Texas and Kansas.
01:17:09No state will claim it.
01:17:11Here.
01:17:14No man's land, they call it.
01:17:15They have no laws there.
01:17:17This is a strip 35 miles wide and 110 miles long.
01:17:20A man could change his name, and nobody'd care who he was or what he had been.
01:17:25Well, then let's go there now together.
01:17:27Wouldn't be safe.
01:17:28Too much open territory to cross.
01:17:33There's a big herd of horses coming up this way from the south in a few days.
01:17:38I could work my way across country as one of the wranglers.
01:17:40What about me?
01:17:41You and little Bill follow with a wagon load of supplies.
01:17:45Then, when we're near the border, I'll join you and we can go the rest of the way together.
01:17:51We'll make it, Bill.
01:17:52I know we will.
01:17:53Sure.
01:17:54Nobody will be thinking a farmer with a wife and a covered wagon could be Bill Doolin.
01:17:58We'll call ourselves, uh, Barry.
01:18:02From this moment on, we're going to forget everything that's happened in the past.
01:18:07The Barrys will be fine people.
01:18:09And you can start a business or...
01:18:11Or maybe we'll have another farm.
01:18:15I think I like that best.
01:18:17And from now on, the name Doolin is going to be like something that we've never heard of.
01:18:40All loaded up, Mrs. Daley.
01:18:42Now, let's see.
01:18:45Yeah?
01:18:46That'll be $97.45.
01:18:48That includes your old bill of $52.
01:18:51Maybe you'd like to pay a little on account.
01:18:53I'll pay for it all.
01:18:55Oh, you must have struck gold.
01:18:57Or maybe you finally heard from that husband of yours.
01:19:00I did.
01:19:01As a matter of fact, I'm going to join him in Colorado.
01:19:03He's... he's found a mine out there.
01:19:05Oh, that's why all the provisions.
01:19:07Mm-hmm.
01:19:08He always struck me as a man who'd be more at home in a saddle than in a mine or
01:19:12even on a farm.
01:19:17That's right.
01:19:18He wasn't cut out for farming.
01:19:27She paid cash.
01:19:29Yep.
01:19:29Husband sent it to her.
01:19:31I never could figure how a man could run off so quick and leave a pretty wife like that.
01:19:36Tall, handsome man like that.
01:19:38You know, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if some other woman wasn't after him.
01:19:41He sure left like somebody was after him.
01:19:43And that drawly way he had a talking.
01:19:46Used to make you feel kind of nice.
01:19:49Why, Morty.
01:19:55Mr., I wonder if I could have a few words with you.
01:19:59Sure.
01:20:00Sure.
01:20:06Well, the wagon's all loaded.
01:20:08It's a shame we gotta leave all this nice furniture.
01:20:11Well, you can always buy new furniture, little Bill.
01:20:14Yeah.
01:20:15You sure you're not gonna change your mind and come all the way to the Strip with us?
01:20:17Oh, no.
01:20:18I keep seeing myself far away in Montana.
01:20:21I just hope that is far enough away.
01:20:38Good day, ma'am.
01:20:40How do you do?
01:20:41Is the man of the place around?
01:20:43No, he isn't.
01:20:44We're census takers.
01:20:46We're trying to find out how many people have moved into Oklahoma since the territory was opened.
01:20:50May we come in?
01:20:52Of course.
01:20:59Your, uh, your name?
01:21:02Daley.
01:21:02I mean your full name.
01:21:04Elaine.
01:21:05No, no.
01:21:06I mean your husband's name.
01:21:08Bill.
01:21:10Bill?
01:21:14That is, uh, William.
01:21:18Any children?
01:21:21No.
01:21:22Where is your husband now?
01:21:25He's in...
01:21:26Colorado.
01:21:27What part of Colorado?
01:21:29Uh, near Center City.
01:21:32You mean Central City, don't you?
01:21:35Oh, yes, yes.
01:21:36That's what I mean.
01:21:39Now...
01:21:44Good day.
01:21:45Thank you very much, Mrs. Daley.
01:21:46Hope we haven't bothered you too much.
01:21:48Not at all.
01:21:49Good day.
01:21:50Good day.
01:22:00What's the matter?
01:22:03Census takers. They're United States marshals.
01:22:06Marshals?
01:22:06They'll put someone on to watch this farm, and you'll never get out of here.
01:22:09We got to ride now.
01:22:11I know of a place.
01:22:13Well, good. I'll saddle the horses.
01:22:14What about the wagon?
01:22:15You can't take. Your wagon is too slow.
01:22:19You stay here.
01:22:48You stay here.
01:22:59Come on.
01:23:03Our hunch was right. This is where we lost Doolin a year ago, and I'm pretty sure this is where
01:23:08we're going to find him.
01:23:09Come on.
01:23:44Come on.
01:23:45Well, what are you doing out here?
01:23:47Glad I caught up with you before you got closer to Clayville.
01:23:50Things have gone wrong. Some marshals rode into your farm.
01:23:53What?
01:23:53I got your wife out of there. She's at the church.
01:23:55I'm going in.
01:23:56Well, you can't. A whole carload of deputies rode in.
01:23:59I can't leave her there.
01:24:00Well, what can you do? They've got every road covered.
01:24:02Wherever you show, they'll be ready for you.
01:24:04Listen, I'm taking a lane to the strip.
01:24:06If we've gone this far, we're gonna have our chance.
01:24:08How are you gonna get into town?
01:24:10Watch me.
01:24:11When I get to the front of the herd, charge them from the rear. Empty your gun.
01:24:13I want a stampede.
01:24:15Stampede?
01:24:16Yeah. I'll lead them right into town. They'll follow.
01:24:18Good luck, Big Bill. Maybe I'll see you sometime.
01:24:21Sure, sure.
01:24:21I'll be working out in Montana.
01:24:23I'll be reading about you in the papers.
01:25:06Well, you've got to go pickup ΠΈΠ΄Π΅ΠΈ.
01:25:08Come on.
01:25:38Come on.
