00:01:13And last night, I think, you know, as always during preseason,

00:01:17the story is young quarterbacks, right?

00:01:21Whether they're brand new, like Fernando Mendoza, Drew Aller,

00:01:25or even like an Anthony Richardson, a guy who has had,

00:01:29not the career he's hoping for up to this point,

00:01:32but, you know, maybe there's still some potential left there.

00:01:35Mikey, let's start with your hero, Fernando.

00:01:40Last night, he gets his first action with the Raiders.

00:01:42How did you feel like he did?

00:01:45I mean, I felt like he played pretty well.

00:01:49He has some zip on his ball.

00:01:50I tweeted that out last night.

00:01:52Like, he's just got – this thing flies out of his hands.

00:01:55The fake – you know, just like little stuff, like the fake he drew out

00:01:59over the – when he threw that long pass over the middle.

00:02:03And then, obviously, the touchdown pass.

00:02:05And did you see how excited he was when he got that touchdown pass?

00:02:08That made me –

00:02:09He's just leaping into the arms of all the offensive linemen.

00:02:12He looked like a – he looked a bit – which is in keeping with – again,

00:02:15his personality is sincere.

00:02:17It's not a put-on.

00:02:19But, yeah, after he throws the touchdown, which is excellent placement,

00:02:23low to Jack Besh.

00:02:25You can see him overwhelmed with excitement.

00:02:28So excited.

00:02:28He's like – it's bubbling over, and you can see him kind of hopping

00:02:32like a little kid.

00:02:48I thought he looked very composed.

00:02:50He did – he did string out a play that he didn't need to string out,

00:02:54and he got whopped at the end.

00:02:57So he's got to learn that kind of stuff, like, just get rid of the ball.

00:02:59You don't need to take a hit from these guys.

00:03:02Like, you can take a hit from a guy from Kennesaw State last year,

00:03:05but, like, don't take a hit from an NFL defensive lineman.

00:03:10But, no, I think you give him a couple weeks behind Kirk Cousins,

00:03:14especially when the regular season starts.

00:03:16And then I think you give him a shot, you know, week six through eight-ish,

00:03:21maybe.

00:03:22I mean, I don't know.

00:03:23Again, they may go the super patient route.

00:03:26Probably not because he's the number one overall pick.

00:03:27But either way –

00:03:28He looked good, though.

00:03:29Chief, I feel like with what I saw last night at Mendoza,

00:03:31if I was a Raiders fan, I'd be pleased.

00:03:34Yeah, and you would expect him to do all, like, the little things

00:03:37that he can prepare for and do those well and do them on time

00:03:40because he's such a student, and he did.

00:03:43Like, he didn't look out of place,

00:03:44and I think you just don't want your young quarterback to look overwhelmed.

00:03:47He looked pretty good.

00:03:48He looked like he belonged.

00:03:49He had – he ripped one throw between the linebacker and safety

00:03:55and the seam a little bit.

00:03:56That was throw of the night.

00:03:57That was really impressed from the end zone copy.

00:03:59And then I thought there was kind of a funny college learning moment

00:04:03where he dominated back shoulder in college, right?

00:04:06Like, Indiana used it to a tee, and you can see that the NFL windows are just –

00:04:10They're, yeah.

00:04:11They're just infinitesimal because he does it just like he did in college,

00:04:15and it was a great throw, and it would have worked,

00:04:16only it's just as perfect a coverage you could actually get from the DB.

00:04:21So, Fernando, in his debut, he shines,

00:04:24but maybe the story of the night was Drew Allard.

00:04:29Shocking.

00:04:29In Pittsburgh.

00:04:30Dana, how about it?

00:04:31To say the least.

00:04:32Man, I was going to ask you guys around the room a little bit,

00:04:35how much stock do you put into a performance like this?

00:04:38Because he looked awesome.

00:04:40And we always have these conversations about whether it's summer league

00:04:44or preseason or whatever it may be.

00:04:47Do you put a lot of stock into something like this when a guy goes out

00:04:52and just kind of shines when it's not exactly against starters?

00:04:56So, it's not against starters, but –

00:05:01and, I mean, I guess to, like, draw on personal experience,

00:05:06the preseason game – I played four preseason games.

00:05:09I played the National Championship, all this stuff in college.

00:05:11Like, that was the most nerve-wracking football I've ever played in my entire life.

00:05:16Yeah.

00:05:16Like, there weren't that many fans there.

00:05:18The vets don't care.

00:05:20They're chilling.

00:05:21They got hats on.

00:05:22It's your life.

00:05:22But it is your life on the line.

00:05:24And, like, if you're Drew Aller, college didn't end how you wanted it to.

00:05:29The last time we saw you, you went out with a whimper, not a bang.

00:05:33And for him to come out last night – and you can't control your opponent,

00:05:36but you can always try to be better than who's ever put in front of you.

00:05:39Right.

00:05:40And for him to do what he did last night, no.

00:05:42I mean, there's no way that's a negative.

00:05:44Now, I don't know if I'm fully here with Jerry yet about him being the future,

00:05:49but, like, does anybody in this room think less of Drew Aller after last night?

00:05:56Now, this just reminds me kind of of the Patriots when – I forget his name.

00:06:17But these are the – the Pittsburgh fans in my life, even before this game,

00:06:23have been gassing him up pretty well, like saying he might be the guy.

00:06:28Just what they've seen from camp.

00:06:30So, I don't know.

00:06:31Maybe he is the guy.

00:06:32He was so hyped up in college.

00:06:35Yeah.

00:06:35Like, he was on the Heisman watch list.

00:06:37And then, you know, you're waiting for him to, like, take that step,

00:06:40and it felt like he was always going backwards.

00:06:42I think it was – was it the Notre Dame game where he did not complete a pass

00:06:46to a wide receiver?

00:06:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:06:48He had some –

00:06:49Oh, they had some crazy numbers like that.

00:06:51Like, at one point, he didn't complete his pass in the second half, I think,

00:06:53in a big game.

00:06:54Yeah.

00:06:55So, it's just like he never performed the way that you expected a guy with that talent to.

00:07:00Maybe he just has, like, a reset now.

00:07:03He can get out of, like, the whole Penn State.

00:07:05So, okay, I think, to me, last night's performance reawakened to take in me

00:07:10from years ago that I kind of thought long dead, which was two years ago

00:07:16when Aller had a very good statistical season.

00:07:18He had, like, 26 tuds, so I think, like, only one pick.

00:07:22My opinion was that that is a red flag, only throwing the one pick,

00:07:26because it shows that Penn State was just completely risk-averse.

00:07:31Yeah.

00:07:31Like, he wasn't empowered to push the ball down the field.

00:07:33He wasn't empowered to kind of play free.

00:07:36He was being forced and kind of held back and constrained.

00:07:39And we knew he had all the physical tools, right?

00:07:43That's been one of the things that people have always pointed to.

00:07:45But, yeah, I mean, there's an argument to be made that maybe Franklin and company

00:07:49were kind of putting the governor on him and holding it back.

00:07:54And maybe now it's a better NFL coaching.

00:07:56Like, again, there's no way you emerge from last night and don't feel better

00:08:00about what you saw out of Drew Aller.

00:08:03Now, Kadek, as a Steelers fan, would you prefer to see one of these younger guys

00:08:07like Will Howard or Drew Aller?

00:08:09Eventually in the season.

00:08:11Like with Fernando, like, I don't know.

00:08:14I liked Will Howard going into last night.

00:10:35night for the Indianapolis Colts.

00:10:36Remember, he's coming off of one of the more odd injuries that we've ever heard of.

00:10:41He was doing a rubber band workout in the locker room, and it snapped back, hit him in

00:10:46the eye.

00:10:47He had to have surgery.

00:10:48Missed all of last year.

00:10:50He's back in action last night.

00:10:51He played quite a bit, and...

00:10:54That's just such bad luck.

00:10:56Yeah, it's bad.

00:10:58I mean, how many times have you guys been in there stretching with rubber bands and it

00:11:47It's like, we're going to break down a lot of QB run in the crawlers next segment, and

00:11:52it's going to show what it does, right?

00:11:54You add a member of the offense to the attack.

00:11:57Like, you gain a main advantage, and you can really affect the offense in a lot of ways.

00:12:01Like, in a world where Taysom Hill exists, and had so much success with the New Orleans

00:12:06Saints, the Colts would be leaving money on the table if they don't create entire sub

00:12:12packages in the red area for Anthony Richardson.

00:12:15I agree, but if I'm a Colts fan, that would frustrate me, that my top-five pick is now

00:12:22becoming Taysom Hill.

00:12:23Yeah, but I mean, but again, you got to, like, are you going to live in regret and let that

00:12:30kind of ruin the present?

00:12:31Are you going to accept that you messed up, and that this is, like, we have to get some

00:12:36value?

00:12:49packages, and he could be used for certain goal line plays, or whatever it may be, but

00:12:54to me, it's like, that's ultimately disappointing, if that's what he's going to be used for.

00:12:59It is, and I just, like, Taysom Hill is, I think, the exception to the rule.

00:13:05The guy who's going to drive you 80 yards, get you into a scoring position, you're going

00:13:09to sub him out to run a gimmick offense.

00:13:11I just feel like you're taking your best and most important player off the field at

00:13:16a critical point to put in a gadget thing.

00:13:18But you can, but you can handle this a million different ways.

00:13:21You can keep Daniel Jones on the field.

00:13:23You can light Anthony Richen up at running back.

00:18:55I don't, and McCaskey did come out and say that yesterday that they're keeping the name

00:19:01But I'm so tired of this story.

00:19:08They shut down the Arlington track a long time ago.

00:19:11There's been no progress made, no shovels in the ground, no timeline for shovels in the

00:19:19It does feel like the Bears don't want it to be, where it's like, as long as we don't

00:19:24start building, then Arlington's still an option if Illinois gets their act together.

00:43:31Like, there hasn't been, since the 18 Chiefs, like, a very, very high-powered, high-scoring offense.

00:43:37We are, for all the talk of how football's so offensively driven, all the other stuff,

00:43:42right now, in the NFL meta, it has rubber-banded back to defense.

00:43:47Yeah.

00:43:47Yeah, yeah.

00:43:47I mean, go look at the numbers last year.

00:43:49Like, a lot of too high coverages that defensive coordinators have figured out they're still

00:43:55able to stop the run, despite playing too high with some personnel stuff.

00:43:59So, yeah, it seems like right now defense is punching back again.

00:44:02But, Ben Johnson, Sean McVay, they're going to try to change that.

00:44:06I also feel like this, in that window here, this is like a 10-year window,

00:44:10that's when you really start to have, like, more spread, and then defenses have adjusted

00:44:16to have, like, that nickel kind of hybrid, where that's become base.

00:44:20So, it's like the defenses might have caught up to this philosophy.

00:44:24So, this is what I love about the NFL meta.

00:44:28It's all the kind of, like, you're saying, punches and counterpunches.

00:44:31So, like, the college game, like, infected the NFL, RPOs spread.

00:44:36Like you said, we see these numbers.

00:44:38The defenses bounce back.

00:44:40They can now defend that stuff.

00:44:41But now the best offenses are the ones that are going big again, right?

00:44:46It's going back the other way.

00:44:47A lot of 13 personnel.

00:44:48Let's put three tight ends on the field.

00:44:50Let's create mismatches where we can take advantage of our size if we want to throw the ball.

00:44:56But then also we're bigger and we can run the ball.

00:44:58And I think that 12 Patriots team was the Gronk Hernandez.

00:45:03So, like, they had kind of brought the two tight end back.

00:45:06So, they were a bit ahead of the curve there as well.

00:45:10Right now, let's go to one of my favorite guys.

00:45:12I've been talking to him for years now.

00:45:15Author of Meat Market as well as many other books.

00:45:18A man who writes for The Athletic.

00:45:20He does his freaks list every year.

00:45:21It just dropped.

00:45:22It's amazing.

00:45:23It's Bruce Feldman.

00:45:30Doing well.

00:45:30I don't know how I wrote about you when you were a big high school recruit somewhere at a really

00:45:34fancy private school in Georgia.

00:45:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:45:37That was the Meat Market book.

00:45:38I think he came out to cover me at an LSU camp where I got absolutely demolished by Drake Nevis

00:45:44and started crying a little bit.

00:45:46And they put that in the book.

00:45:48But it was cool.

00:45:49It was cool to be mentioned at the time.

00:45:51For sure, Bruce.

00:45:52All right.

00:45:53You just dropped your freaks list.

00:45:54Just explain what that is real quick for everybody.

00:45:56The uninitiated.

00:45:58Yeah, so for 20-plus years dating back to my early days at ESPN, I was doing a college football

00:46:04blog looking for stuff to write about in the dead of the offseason.

00:46:07And had an idea there's always these guys you hear about, like, there's one at every program or maybe every

00:46:14couple years at a program who are these freak athletes.

00:46:18It may be a 320-pound defensive tackle who can do backflips.

00:46:21It can be a wide receiver who can bench press, like, twice his body weight.

00:46:26Just whatever it was.

00:46:28I was trying to find 10 of them.

00:46:29And over time, now it's grown to be 101.

00:46:33It's at all levels of college football.

00:46:35And it's been really cool just because not only have, like, NFL scouts and draft people really kind of got

00:46:42into it, but also, you know, the strength coaches who are, like, kind of the lifeblood of the training programs,

00:46:47they've bought in.

00:46:48So it's been a kind of fun, passion project.

00:46:50It takes probably about three months.

00:46:52Like you said, it just dropped a few days ago.

00:46:54And so it's always kind of a big sigh of relief once it's there because it means the season's right

00:47:00around the corner.

00:47:01Yep.

00:47:01So I want to get into some of the names on the list.

00:47:04And let's start with Nick Harbour.

00:47:06And this is the thing about the Freaks List.

00:47:08Like, some of the names you're going to recognize, some are maybe going to be guys that are not household

00:47:11names.

00:47:12But this is Harbour's third time being number one on this list in four years.

00:47:17What is it that puts him there?

00:47:20And it seemed like last year he started to crack the actual on-field success.

00:47:24Like, do you think he blows up this year?

00:47:27Well, for Shane Beamer's sake, he better.

00:47:29Yeah.

00:47:30What it is about him is he is like this insane combination of size and speed.

00:47:35He's a legit track guy.

00:47:37He was running 10, 100 meters.

00:47:39He got there.

00:47:40He is the crazy thing about him for context sake.

00:47:43Right?

00:47:44Megatron, Calvin Johnson, one of the all-time great football players and receivers ever.

00:47:48Nick Harbour is actually an inch taller and he's even faster.

00:47:51Good God.

00:47:51John Johnson was 6'5", 235 and ran a 4'3", 5'40 at the combine.

00:47:58This guy is faster.

00:47:59I mean, he runs almost 24 miles per hour, which is remarkable.

00:48:036'6", long arms, almost 240 pounds now.

00:48:085% body fat.

00:48:11He's been a track guy for a lot of the off-season in past years.

00:48:15He's been more focused on developing as a football player.

00:48:18I mean, like you said, T-Bob, he got better last year.

00:48:21Now they need him to take another big step to help Lenora Sellers out and get back to

00:48:26where, you know, South Carolina is a top 25 team.

00:48:29Bruce, another wide receiver, Jeremiah Smith.

00:48:34Obviously, a lot of production on the field, but we don't see a lot of, you know, what he

00:48:37does in the weight room, stuff like that.

00:48:39Talk about him and how he was, you know, number two on your list.

00:48:42Yeah, he was number one last year.

00:48:44I mean, the comparison for him is Andre Johnson, pro football, and a super strong track guy

00:48:50out of Miami.

00:48:51But what's different about Jeremiah was Andre Johnson wasn't that way when he first got

00:48:57to Miami.

00:48:57He redshirted.

00:48:58It took him a bit.

00:49:00Jeremiah Smith was a grown man, probably more impressive than any receiver had coming out

00:49:06of Ohio State when he got there.

00:49:08Six, three and a half, almost 225 pounds, runs 23.5 miles per hour.

00:49:14You know, broad jumps 11 feet.

00:49:16These are all like, remember when Sonny Stiles blew up the combine, you know, a few months

00:49:21back?

00:49:21That's what Jeremiah Smith will do if he decides he needs to do those things and tests, because

00:49:28he'll probably be the first or second pick in the draft.

00:49:32The other amazing thing to me is this is a program that has a ton of fast guys, and a

00:49:37lot of them are 40 pounds lighter.

00:49:38When they did their 10-yard splits, he was the fastest of anybody at Ohio State, 1.44

00:49:44seconds.

00:49:45Anything under, like, 1.5, 1.52 is blazing fast.

00:49:49So to be that fast, that big, plus on top of it, he's that detailed, that physical, that

00:49:55talented.

00:49:56He's just a remarkable all-around athlete.

00:49:59Talk to us about the Oregon defensive lineman, Amore Washington.

00:50:03Amore Washington, there's a video of him squatting 855 pounds, 855 pounds.

00:50:10I know, and Dan Lanning told me he was like, he could do more.

00:50:13We just, you know, you're plenty strong enough.

00:50:15We're out of weights.

00:50:16Crazy, right?

00:50:17You have a guy who's 330 pounds, runs almost 21 miles per hour.

00:50:22He vertical jumps 35 inches.

00:50:25I mean, like, when they sent me his numbers, he was in top five last year.

00:50:29When they sent me his numbers last year, when Lanning texted me, I was like, did like a

00:50:34triple take, because if he was 230 pounds doing the stuff he's doing in terms of, like,

00:50:39the jump, the speed, top-end speed, that'd be like, yeah, that's impressive.

00:50:43He was doing it last year, he was like 337.

00:50:46This year, he's almost 330.

00:50:48Again, you see what he's doing in the weight room.

00:50:50That is a ton of plates on the bar.

00:50:52And, again, he could have done more, Lanning said.

00:50:55And, again, that is an Oregon defensive line that is probably the best in the entire country.

00:51:01And so that's a name, like, again, he's like a Jeremiah Smith, very productive.

00:51:04That's a name you need to know.

00:51:06Bruce, my guy Mikey, he has a bit of a bone to pick with you here.

00:51:11Freshman year, Bruce, all I wanted was to be on, I played at Indiana.

00:51:14All I wanted was to be on your list.

00:51:17Freshman year, obviously, I know I had.

00:51:19So he's going to give you the measurables.

00:51:21Does he crack the top 100 here, Bruce?

00:51:23I didn't have any of the, like, on-field production.

00:51:25I know that probably feeds into it a little bit.

00:51:28I was about 6'4", 3'15".

00:51:33Okay.

00:51:33Those are my measurements.

00:51:35Okay.

00:51:364'05", hand clean, which I thought was pretty good.

00:51:39Yeah, pretty good.

00:51:41The, well, so, Amari, he was doing the hand-supported squat.

00:51:45Yeah.

00:51:46Yeah, the hot field squat.

00:51:46Yeah, I didn't do, I did 6'45 on that.

00:51:50Okay, pretty damn good.

00:51:51And I had a 4'05 bench, 30-inch vertical, 9-inch broad jump, or 9-foot broad jump.

00:51:59That's impressive.

00:52:00You came in as a freshman.

00:52:01When I cracked it, when I got it.

00:52:01As a freshman, that is true.

00:52:02As a freshman, that's crazy.

00:52:04You would.

00:52:05Here's the thing I wonder about.

00:52:06Like, so what I found out over the last few years is there'll be a guy, you know, you'll

00:52:12either hear about him now from, like, the NIL agent who will pitch me and say what the

00:52:15numbers are, or a parent, or maybe the player themselves.

00:52:19And then I'll ask, like, the strength coach, or I'll ask the head coach if I know him, you

00:52:23know, text with him.

00:52:24Be like, hey, so-and-so, I heard he did this.

00:52:27What do you think?

00:52:28Like, and then they'll be like, eh, you know, that guy hasn't really done anything yet.

00:52:32We don't want to put him out there.

00:52:33Maybe it's a character issue that they don't want to promote.

00:52:36I'm not saying somebody stabbed you in the back in Bloomington.

00:52:40It's possible, though.

00:52:43Maybe he had a couple too many beers off the field.

00:52:46No, there's a beer.

00:52:47Prior to my suspension.

00:52:48This kid's a chuckle.

00:52:49Prior to my suspension.

00:52:51All right, Bruce, let's look at more of this.

00:52:53Okay, because Freaks looks awesome, guys.

00:52:55Again, go read it.

00:52:56There's a million cool athletes that you've, like, a ton that you've never heard of that

00:53:01that'll blow your mind.

00:53:02But let's talk about on the field this year.

00:53:06It does seem like there's a very exciting kind of top of the hierarchy with the teams

00:53:12that we believe to be definitely capable of winning the national championship, be it

00:53:15like Texas, Oregon, Howe State.

00:53:18What is a team that you think is capable that has more of a dark horse sort of bent to

00:53:25it?

00:53:26You know, it's actually, I hate that you asked me the question, but I think LSU is lurking

00:53:32there, right?

00:53:33You've got a quarterback who led his team to the playoff.

00:53:36I wasn't doing it for your benefit, but, like, they have everything they need, right?

00:53:40So, yeah, the one thing I'm curious about, like, right last year, Lane Kiffin had a big

00:53:46time running back, they ran the heck out of it.

00:53:48It wasn't just Trinidad Chambliss.

00:53:50You know, that history, they've always had elite running backs.

00:53:53I don't know, is Harlem Berry going to really step up, was a big recruit?

00:53:57But you look at the players they have, I think he's got coordinators on both sides who are

00:54:03really good.

00:54:04The other thing is, like, I didn't have, just touching back on Freak's List for a second.

00:54:09You know, LSU took a minute to get back to me, so I updated it, like, yesterday, but

00:54:14there was some other guys I asked about.

00:54:16There's, like, three freaky defensive linemen who are freshmen that are in there that I

00:54:21think are going to make a big impact, right?

00:54:23And so, you know, like, their defense hadn't been that good under Brian Kelly.

00:54:27That was obviously lagging.

00:54:29Blake Baker does a good job.

00:54:31I think they're a dangerous team, you know, because of all the guys they added in the portal.

00:54:35They have a ton of speed.

00:54:37Again, Sam Levitt, quarterback who's led a team to a playoff when he was at ASU, I'm

00:54:42not predicting that they're going to win it, but they, to me, are, like, the dark horse

00:54:45to watch that's lurking around, like, 10 to 15 spot.

00:54:49You know, everyone's going to talk about Georgia and Arch at Texas coming out of the

00:54:52SEC.

00:54:53You know, I wouldn't sleep on LSU.

00:54:57Yeah, it's interesting, Bruce.

00:54:59Coach O's been kind of hyping up that D-line as well, but at running back, I'm hearing that

00:55:04Dylan Jones, the Wisconsin transfer, may be in the running to be the starter there.

00:55:10Somebody learned just a couple of days ago.

00:55:12So be on the lookout maybe for him if they're going to be one of your dark horse teams.

00:55:17So you're someone who's also been very tied in with LSU through the years, kind of know

00:55:23the drama in that program inside and out.

00:55:25What are your thoughts on the reports yesterday that Jane Daniels comes out and says, cease

00:55:31and desist, don't use my NAL.

00:55:32Give me your copy of the Heisman Trophy.

00:55:35I'm upset that you've given my number to DJ Pickett.

00:55:39Yeah, that was a kind of a, nobody looks good in this story, right?

00:55:43You know, I think a lot of people are like, oh, you know what?

00:55:45Because there's always been past stories of like, maybe Jaden's mom being like, you

00:55:50know, kind of leaning into some of this stuff and it feels petty.

00:55:54You know, you talk to people who've been at LSU for a long time, know that place.

00:55:56They're like, well, if you're going to retire a jersey, they have, the player has to have

00:56:00graduated from LSU.

00:56:02I think he graduated from ASU and not LSU.

00:56:04And how long have you been away from the program before they do that?

00:56:11You know, if I'm an LSU fan, I'm like, hey, thanks.

00:56:13Thanks, Jaden.

00:56:14You know, you had an amazing, you know, couple of years there.

00:56:18Obviously, you weren't Joe Burrow, who led us to a national title and was like a generational,

00:56:22you know, all time, all time great.

00:56:25But the guy did win a Heisman.

00:56:27You hope that they could sort this out.

00:56:30You know, you feel kind of bad that DJ Pickett has kind of gotten thrown in the middle

00:56:34of all this, too.

00:56:35And Brian Kelly, who supposedly made the promise, he's now doing TV.

00:56:39He's no longer there.

00:56:40So it's just one of these stories that I think makes everybody look kind of petty.

00:56:46Chief, talk to Bruce about your Irish.

00:56:48Yeah.

00:56:49Notre Dame, T-Bob left them off as a potential.

00:56:52No, no, no, no, no.

00:56:53They're in that group.

00:56:54Let's talk about LSU.

00:56:55They're in that group.

00:56:56Yeah.

00:56:57I feel like they are not usually represented on your freaks list.

00:57:03They don't have the high-end athletes.

00:57:05And that's become a trend.

00:57:06Excuse me.

00:57:06We were eating sandwiches the second ago.

00:57:09Who for Notre Dame has broken into that list?

00:57:13And overall, do you think the team now can compete with the Ohio States and the SEC schools

00:57:20with this class under Marcus Freeman?

00:57:22Yeah, you know, it's a good point because for years, Notre Dame, I feel like, was best

00:57:27known for really good offensive linemen, really good tight ends.

00:57:31And then all of a sudden, you know, it was pre-Marcus Freeman.

00:57:34You'd have, like, Kyle Hamilton.

00:57:36You obviously had Jeremiah Love.

00:57:38You know, we've had a bunch of guys.

00:57:39This year, there's four Notre Dame players on the freaks list.

00:57:43You know, they're all linemen or, you know, bigger players but are really athletic.

00:57:47You know, we know Leonard Moore probably might be the best defensive player in the country.

00:57:52He's an athletic, big cornerback, five picks.

00:57:56I mean, he's going to get a big showcase game when they play the rematch against Miami and

00:58:02Malachi Tony.

00:58:03So we'll see how that goes.

00:58:04I think what has changed is, you know, Brian Kelly did a really good job.

00:58:09Marcus Freeman has done an even better job of resonating with top-level athletes.

00:58:16And I feel like, so you have a guy like CJ Carr, who's a legit Heisman candidate.

00:58:21He may not put up the huge, huge passing numbers because I think their offense is not quite built

00:58:26to do that.

00:58:27But I think they're really good on both lines.

00:58:29You saw what they've upgraded, especially on defense, the D linemen they've added.

00:58:35And I think this is a team that should be right there.

00:58:39I mean, the schedule is weird in that they play Miami and South Bend.

00:58:44They play a good BYU team and they play SMU.

00:58:46And then the rest of it feels, you know, really watered down.

00:58:49And obviously there's no conference title game.

00:58:52But they were one of the best teams in the country.

00:58:55They obviously lost to Miami in a close game, lost to, you know, real close game to A&M.

00:59:00And that was it, right?

00:59:01But I think that Freeman's done a really good job.

00:59:04I think he's put together a heck of a staff.

00:59:07I mean, to me, they're in it.

00:59:09Like, if you ask me right now who would I think would be the three safest picks, I think,

00:59:15to make a run at a title, you know, outside of like the dark horse I was talking about

00:59:19for, would be really like Notre Dame, really like Oregon, and also really like Texas, who

00:59:25I felt like was a year away last year.

00:59:27And I feel like they've made some really good additions.

00:59:30And to me, that's kind of where the sweet spot is.

00:59:33Not saying that somebody can't come off the radar a little bit out of that group, but

00:59:37I just feel like Notre Dame is built for this year to make a run at the national title.

00:59:42Bruce, similar question, but with Indiana, because, you know, under Coach Signetti, they

00:59:47like he likes to bring in a lot of guys who have proven production or or lower level guys

00:59:52from JMU, things like that, who may not be the biggest, strongest freaks out there, but

00:59:57they get on the field and it's just production, production, production.

01:00:01What do you see, you know, coming out of Indiana, maybe freaks list or just in general with,

01:00:06you know, how they will go throughout the season?

01:00:09Yeah, I think it was interesting how he trusts his evaluation as much as any person in football,

01:00:15right?

01:00:16You see what he he he made an interesting move, I thought, to go say, hey, you know what?

01:00:20You know, Mendoza's younger brother's been with us, you know, he's got ability, he's

01:00:24played some mop up duty or whatever.

01:00:30has done some good things, good arm talent, maybe make some questionable decisions and

01:00:34turns it over at times, but has played a lot of football.

01:00:37And I think he has this arc where, OK, the guy and this was like Fernando last year, the

01:00:43guy was like, he's OK in spring.

01:00:45And then in the beginning, remember, I need, you know, like the old Dominion game wasn't like

01:00:49great.

01:00:50And then he I think there's something to how he sees how guys get put into like the adversity

01:00:57piece, because we saw Fernando come back all the time.

01:01:00And, you know, in key moments, you know, he makes a mistake and, you know, throws a pick

01:01:05and then the next drive, he leads him to a touchdown.

01:01:07And you see that.

01:01:08I think what's what's really, you know, impressive about them is it is an older team.

01:01:12It's now an even older team because they added two really experienced defensive linemen

01:01:16who are really good players, you put that with Tyreek Tucker, you put that with Mariel

01:01:20and, you know, who are like all-American caliber guys.

01:01:23Anyway, you got a really good group of linebackers.

01:01:27And I think you've got an experience front.

01:01:30Right.

01:01:30So all those pieces, plus you add it to Charlie Becker, who's like a freaksless caliber, you

01:01:35know, athlete.

01:01:36You add, you know, add in Turbo Richard, a running back.

01:01:38Like, I mean, they run the football well.

01:01:40I think they're for anybody who feels like they're a fluke.

01:01:43I don't think you get what he has done there.

01:01:46Right.

01:01:46And I think you're not giving him enough credit.

01:01:48Not to mention like, you know, they went toe to toe and they bullied a lot of teams.

01:01:54Really good, talented teams with more high-ranked recruits.

01:01:58But as you guys know, once you get into college football, who is a five-star and who is a

01:02:02two-star

01:02:03doesn't matter.

01:02:03If anything, that puts the chip on the shoulder of the two and three stars and the five-star

01:02:08guys are battling off the entitlement.

01:02:10And I think that's where, you know, they kind of have the secret sauce right now.

01:02:18But who's going to win the national championship?

01:02:22Man, if you pin me down right now, I would lean into one of those three teams.

01:02:30I feel like this might be the Irish's year because there's something to the narrative to

01:02:37me about they didn't play last year.

01:02:40They decided to opt out of basically the bowl season.

01:02:44And, you know, I think CJ Carr, he looked really good against Miami in a tough place to

01:02:49play.

01:02:50You know those are like two werewolves coming off the edge that Miami had getting after

01:02:54him.

01:02:54He still played well, right?

01:02:55I think he's capable and ready to lead them to a national title.

01:03:00I know they lost two first-round running backs, but they've got good talent in the backfield.

01:03:05I think they've upgraded a little bit at receiver in terms of athleticism, get some guys back.

01:03:10And I just think they've gotten so good on defense.

01:03:14And I don't think Marcus Freeman gets enough credit for the guys he's put around him.

01:03:19And I just feel like there's a presence there.

01:03:21Again, you know, the schedule is not great.

01:03:23They're probably, you know, I don't know if they can afford more than one loss, you know,

01:03:27given who they play.

01:03:28But I don't think they will.

01:03:29You know, I think they're going to roll right through.

01:05:53And then maybe we get some more fun stuff.

01:05:55Terry and Arnold.

01:05:57So he gets cut from Detroit.

01:05:59The scandal's kind of crazy.

01:06:01The Seahawks bring him in.

01:06:03They say they do due diligence.

01:06:04And now they're planning on signing him.

01:06:06What's kind of the inside story there?

01:06:08Yeah, I think there's a couple things going on.

01:06:10I think the fact that he's going to go right to the commissioner's exempt list kind of gives,

01:06:15to me, the Seahawks and John Schneider some cover.

01:06:17Like, hey, you know, we like him.

01:06:19And guess what?

01:06:20Five other teams liked him, too.

01:06:22But he and his agent felt like this was the best fit for us.

01:06:25So he'll go on the commissioner's list.

01:06:26And then Roger and crew will decide when he's able to play through the legal proceedings

01:06:31and whatever unfolds over the weeks and months ahead with that.

01:06:34I don't think there's any expectation in Seattle this guy plays early.

01:06:38It may not even be – it may be a 10- or 12-week suspension.

01:06:41I mean, they just don't – they don't know.

01:06:43But they're willing to take that risk.

01:06:45A couple other things.

01:06:47The guy that recruited him to Alabama, Carl Scott, is their secondary coach.

01:06:51Jalen Milrow, the third-string quarterback, is his best buddy.

01:06:55He's got a cousin that plays professional women's soccer in Seattle.

01:06:59So he's got just a bunch of touch points that's a long ways away from Tallahassee

01:07:06and some of the routes that got him in trouble.

01:07:08So they feel like they're going to be the incubator

01:07:10and the best incubator to develop them.

01:07:12His agent, who's also Jalen's agent, I think felt the same way.

01:07:16And I think that's why he's a Seattle Seahawk today.

01:07:19Brock, sticking with the Seahawks, hard knocks.

01:07:22It's been so fun watching.

01:07:24It's one of my favorite series ever.

01:07:27Anything standing out to you so far heading into this season?

01:07:31Yeah, I think a couple things.

01:07:33So we're the flagship of the Seahawks.

01:07:35Our station's been in that for decades.

01:07:37And we get a chance to sit with Mike every Monday morning after games.

01:07:41And that's valuable time.

01:07:44Before the segment, after the segment, we've gotten a chance to just watch him grow.

01:07:48But now you're seeing him just bloom.

01:07:51Right?

01:07:51Like, you know, he went in the soil, new head coach, as he said, kind of awkward.

01:07:56I think our first radio interview with him after Pete Carroll for 15 years,

01:08:01Salk and I were like, uh-oh.

01:08:02Yeah, that's crazy.

01:08:03That is true.

01:08:04That's a hard act to follow with Pete.

01:08:06Yes.

01:08:07Yeah, Pete was one-on-one in that way, man.

01:08:09He was such an open book.

01:08:10But, you know, you're just kind of like a seed, man, in soil.

01:08:13And you watch him grow, kind of like Leonard Williams in the garden, right?

01:08:16That whole thing.

01:08:17And now he's just, he's like blossoming in front of the whole country to watch.

01:08:21And you get a chance to see what John Schneider, what he knew in that interview process.

01:08:26If you remember, he had to wait for Mike.

01:08:28And there was a chance that the Ravens maybe even go to the Super Bowl.

01:08:31And he really had to wait.

01:08:33But he knew he was his guy for everything you're getting to see and the country's getting to see.

01:08:38Hey, Brock, so we're seeing kind of on hard knocks a little bit of the energy after the Super Bowl

01:08:42win.

01:08:43And I just want to see from your perspective outside of the show what you're seeing from training camp so

01:08:48far.

01:08:50Yeah, these guys, man, they really genuinely do care about each other.

01:08:55And I think you see that, honestly, in some of the fights.

01:08:59Because you've got to divide a team, right?

01:09:01Those melees turn into issues.

01:09:04They turn into divides.

01:09:05They turn into clicks.

01:09:07They turn into guys that just aren't all on the same page together.

01:09:11So the reason this team won the Super Bowl last year, and if we've said this once on our show,

01:09:16we've said it a million times,

01:09:17they didn't win it because of their top stars.

01:09:19They didn't win it because of their top 10 players.

01:09:22They won it because they truly believe they're 70 strong.

01:09:25And, you know, you go back through the season, there were characters in the story that were there early in

01:09:31the year

01:09:31that weren't even on the team late in the year.

01:09:33Part of that 70 that went through the climb.

01:09:35And there were guys late in the year that really, you know, came to the occasion and helped that final

01:09:40step and final journey.

01:09:41And so they believe that they've got something pretty special in anybody who's been out to practice.

01:09:47And probably one of the cooler anecdotes was Jay Glazer.

01:09:51And I was texting with him, he goes to all of them, he's like, I don't study football fronts, coverages,

01:09:57come on.

01:09:58What I study is the chemistry, the charisma, just the connectedness.

01:10:02And there's very few places like Seattle.

01:10:04And I think that's credit to John Schneider over a couple decades and all the people that are there in

01:10:09the continuity,

01:10:09on top of the human beings that they want on their team and are willing to move on from those

01:10:14that just don't fit that culture.

01:10:16Yeah, John Schneider, I mean, we've broken down plenty on this show as well, but unquestioned, I think, should be

01:10:22considered the best GM right now.

01:10:23All the douch on the moves two years ago, and you see what it led to last season.

01:10:29And then there's the Charbonnet element in this, where you let Charbonnet walk when his stock is high.

01:10:36So you draft Jadarian Price.

01:10:37What have been the early returns on, or excuse me, Kenneth Walker walking.

01:10:41Excuse me, I got my running backs mixed up.

01:10:43But, so Walker out, Charbonnet's still there, but I'm hearing a lot of hype around Jadarian Price thus far.

01:10:50Yeah, that's good.

01:10:51You know what that little slip points to?

01:10:54Just the interchangeability.

01:10:56There you go, buddy, exactly.

01:10:59It's too early for me to say that word, but they're interchangeable, right?

01:11:01The interchangeable parts that have been a part of, like, the whole Shanahan tree forever.

01:11:06And that's where Brian Fleury comes from, from San Francisco.

01:11:10And whether it's Charbonnet, whether it's Jadarian, whether it's Kim Walker,

01:11:13I think there's a belief and a feeling that, actually, what's much more important are the T-bombs in front

01:11:18of them.

01:11:18Moving people, like Bray Zabel and Jalen Sundell and those guys did, yeah, making that thing happen.

01:11:25And Jadarian, he's a unique dude.

01:11:27Like, he has got, like, Hulk Hogan pythons, man.

01:11:30Like, he is absolutely jacked up top.

01:11:33And it's almost, I don't want to say it's, like, totally imbalanced, you know,

01:11:36but the lower half does not look like the upper half, or else he'd be, like, a 255-pound defensive

01:11:42end.

01:11:42So, yeah, he is absolutely stacked up top.

01:11:47He's got these kind of little subtleties.

01:11:49He reminds me of a guy that I was around in Seattle years ago.

01:11:52Play style different, but movement similar, and that's Sean Alexander.

01:14:20I will make them give me back their trophy.

01:14:26And I will refuse to let my face be shown.

01:14:30The fans of LSU, upon hearing the news, were perplexed.
