By building a unique commercial nuclear power plant powered by an experimental chemical mixture instead of water, the town of Piqua hoped to revolutionize low-cost energy. However, a fundamental flaw in the chemistry led to a catastrophic mechanical failure, turning a bold vision into a radioactive nightmare.
In this documentary, we explore the rise and fall of the Organically Moderated and Cooled Reactor (OMR). You will learn how a revolutionary engineering workaround failed under the pressure of nuclear radiation, the frantic efforts to repair the baking sludge inside the core, and the ultimate decision by the federal government to entomb the remains in a massive concrete tomb 44 feet underground.
