In the 1940s, a quiet stretch of Illinois farmland was transformed into a massive industrial powerhouse. Known as the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, this 36,000-acre complex was larger than the city of San Francisco and produced nearly 60 percent of the American war effort during World War II. It was a self-contained industrial mega-city capable of pumping out over a billion pounds of TNT, but its legacy is defined by both incredible production and catastrophic tragedy.
This documentary explores the explosive history of the Joliet Arsenal, from the forced removal of pioneer families to the deadliest ammunition plant disaster in U.S. history. You will learn how a site saturated with toxic heavy metals was eventually reimagined through the Joliet Concept, turning a wasteland of acid towers and bunkers into a national tallgrass prairie, a major inland port, and a final resting place for veterans.
